Another short warm-up run on the treadmill to end the month at 108 miles in 28 days running, for an average of 3.5 miles a day in May.9 -
Goal is 55 miles this month.
5/1....3.12 miles
5/2...3.09 miles
5/4....13.1 miles (mini-marathon)
5/9....6.63 miles
5/16....4.15 miles.....slow miles, cool weather...nice breeze. Completed after working a 12 hour shift and attending a meeting at work.
5/18....2.59 (treadmill)
5/19...no workout due to thunderstorms
5/20...8.99 miles (Monon trail).....cool weather approximately 62 degrees with occasional cool winds. Goal was to try to run 13 minute miles at up-tempo pace in order to build up my stamina. Noted that during most of my races, I became more fatigued after 9 miles. I was able to sprint easier and ran mile 6 at 12:24 and mile 7 at 17 seconds faster than mile 1 (repeated mile). Had ache in right hip after starting but went away after 2nd mile. Slept great last night.
5/22....2.71 miles (treadmill).....plus 10 minutes on stationary bike. Lots of sweating!
5/24 ....6.47 miles (Monon trail)....72 degrees....very humid.
5/26...0 miles.....wanted to run but due to the Indy 500 and my street being blocked, had a short window of time to be able to go home.
5/27...7.01 miles.....run on the Monon Trail....82 degrees and very humid. Unable to keep my heart rate in "fat burning" mode. Just missed the rain. Started to rain during my cool-down walk.
5/29...2.63 miles on the treadmill
5/30....4.09 miles......ran in a light rain/drizzle after working 2 twelve hour shifts.
Total is 64.58 miles
Goal is 55 miles
I think that I crushed my goal for the month. Will finish reading May posts tomorrow and (I assume) 5 pages of posts in June already.

Hell Have No Hurry 50k Trail Race - June 2019
Howl at the Moon - Nighttime 5k - August 2019
<plus some others that I can not recall>
202? - Disney World Dopey! (if can raise funds)
2019 GOAL: Knock a full hour off my 50k time at Hell Have No Hurry1 -
I had no mileage goal for the month due to starting injured, but I tallied my running miles and it comes out to 33.3 miles, not too bad! My real goal was to rehab my Achilles’ tendon and it’s much better than when I started the month unable to run at all without pain, but still nowhere near good enough for my secondary goal which was running the Navy Nautical 10 miler on June 2. Oh well!
After yesterday’s race my ankle is quite sore, it wasn’t really ready for race pace. I need to be more careful in future. But I’m hopeful that it’s going to be okay after an extra rest day, since it’s getting better as the day wears on.
That’s May for me, onward to June!5 -
Got the finish line photos for my race, as usual I look like a dork - as I recall I was thinking about how to land on the finish mat without hurting my bad ankle. But I have a question: WHY ARE MY SUNGLASSES CROOKED? Geez lady, straighten your glasses. So then my husband points out that I am visible in the background of the picture before mine, and in this photo MY GLASSES ARE STRAIGHT. What happened to my glasses between 28:10 and 28:19? Was I hit by a bus and don’t recall it? Very peculiar!6

I had 9 miles on my training plan today. I got tricked into trying to run outside by rather pleasant post-run weather. I really didn't want to do 9 miles on a treadmill.
When I started it felt nice. About mile 3 the sun fully came out and it just killed me. I ended up walk-running my last mile and called it just short of 7.5 miles. I just couldn't run any more. I called my husband to pick me up because I just didn't see the benefit to punishing myself by walking 1.5 miles home.
It's the first time I've ever had to bail on a run partway through because I physically couldn't do it. Sucks.
5/1: 4.1 miles
5/3: 7 miles
5/6: 5 miles
5/8: 4.4 miles
5/10: 8 miles
5/16: 2.5 miles
5/19: 3 miles
5/20: 3 miles
5/22: 2.9 miles
5/24: 4 miles
5/27: 7 miles
5/29: 4.6 miles
5/31: 7.4 miles
May total: 62.9 miles
May goal: 70 miles
2019 Races:
Piney Woods Trailfest 5k - 2/2/2019 29.23
Rodeo Run 10k - 2/23/2019 1:03.12
Run Houston! Minute Maid Park 10k - 3/23/2019 1:01.28
Brazos Bend 50 10k - 4/6/2019 1:15:33
El Chupacabra de Houston 10k (night trail run) - 8/2019
TWRC Run Wild Run Free 5k - 9/2019
10 for Texas 10 Miler - 10/2019 registered
Wine and Dine half marathon - 11/3/2019 registered
Run the Year 2019 - Team Five for Nineteen9 -
My final total in the end was 26.6 miles. Not too bad but something to work on. Plus I've learnt a few methods to run further and for longer which has been really helpful. Thanks to everyone for all the tips!
I will disappear for June to train for a bike event but will be back for July.

It was probably that last hard stride and stretch for the finish line that knocked your sunglasses out of place...1 -

@juliet3455 - didn't you have terrible fires last year too? Wow - it looks like all of Alberta is in danger! Stay safe!
[/quote]
@shanaber Yes we had bad fires in Eastern Alberta - Fort McMurray last year. They have a few small ones there this year that could link up into another monster. We have 3 major fires in North Western Alberta and a bunch of small ones that are also threatening to link up. All I can say about Stay Safe is everyone else is fleeing south and we are constantly rotating in/out to the north. Looks like a bad weekend coming at us for winds and temperature. I already have 3 jobs for tomorrow due to fire damage in the last 2 days.
The worst part is the intellectually challenged individuals who are trying to drive through the area taking side roads ( because the GPS says it's a valid road ) to try and sneak around the road blocks. Then they get their City Car stuck on a trail a motocross bike couldn't go down. No cellphone service or extremely poor so they text Mom calling for help. Now you have to try and find them and that takes resources away from evacuation and fire perimeter work.
Also the special people who drive past the gas station because they think it is too expensive even though the big warning signs say no gas for 600km due to power outages - then run out of gas. $200.00 for a tow truck rescue plus $30-$50 for gas and all of a sudden the gas looks cheap.5 -

Finished the month with 101.5 miles. 27 of those miles were on a treadmill. The rest was out in the heat. More than anything, I am most proud of that. It’s been 90 plus for weeks! Congratulations to everyone on a great month.6 -
ContraryMaryMary wrote: »Totally off topic, but I’m headed to New Zealand next month for work (flying into Auckland, conference is in Hamilton), and will have a couple days free after that. For those of you living there, does exploring Rotorua sound like a good plan? Any national parks not too far (like a few hours’ drive) that would be reasonable that time of year? Should I bring a tent? Um, tying back to make it relevant—any good places not to miss for running? Grateful for any advice..NZ feels pretty far away from the US West Coast
Hey, that’s awesome! Rotorua has some beautiful running, but finding nature is not hard in New Zealand. You’ll get gorgeous off-road running less than half an hour from Hamilton. Rotorua is great, but touristy and smells like rotten eggs (true story). It has awesome trails nearby (namely, The Redwoods which is about 5-10 minutes from town). You haven’t given your dates, but if you’re here on the 22nd June and fancy an awesome trail event, do the Double Rainbow - lots of distance options from easy to mad
https://www.lacticturkey.co.nz/doublerainbow/
Also this is on: http://activeqt.co.nz/event/rotorua-multisport/
You could also head to the Coromandel for some beautiful trail running (you may remember photos my Pinnacles run from March - that’s probably around an hour from Hamilton). Pretty beaches there too.
If you’re here in Auckland over a weekend I can certainly hook you up with a scenic trail run or two. There are two Xterra trail runs in regional Auckland in June (9th and 30th) and I plan to run the one on the 30th in Waiuku Forest as it’s awesome. https://www.trailrun.co.nz/ and the one on the 9th is probably less than two hours drive from Hamilton.
And, yes, June is officially winter down here but a North Island winter is fairly mild. Could be wet though.
Happy to provide other pointers and answer questions!
@ContraryMaryMary I’m so sorry to have disappeared for a while & am super grateful for all of your excellent advice! I’m glad to hear that the winter is mild, and I am totally fine with wet: I live in Seattle where we have a rep for that anyway, so I’ll be sure to pack appropriately! My dates are 6/23-7/3, and that 6/30 trail run looks amazing! When I first wrote I thought I’d be totally solo (in which case I’d go for that Waiuku Forest trail run), but I may end up in Rotorua with some friends from Palmerston North (?) and I think anything closer to Auckland might be a little far for them. But we will at least be doing some mountain biking near there, I think, and spending time in the Redwoods. I’ll also see what I can get to from Hamilton before hooking up with them, and yes, your Pinnacles run photos were wonderful!!
Otherwise, I got super involved hosting our out of town guest (during a heavy work week), and then tweaked my lower back by not stretching, biking with my kids, and then spending tons of time in the car with an impromptu trip to the Olympic peninsula last Sunday, and am finally emerging after all of that. I completely forgot where I was in relation to my May goal, but think I may have just squeaked by (will do the math in a minute!) But I also got a good day 1 of June yesterday, which may be otherwise tricky with 2 long work trips.
May goal: 70 mi
5/1 2 mi
5/2 2 mi
5/5 13.3 mi
