Today I got to run 3.88 miles around my home lake. It was cool and a little humid and windy but it felt great to be out and about. I’ve missed running first thing in the morning - it’s a great way to start the day off feeling like you’ve accomplished something. I still have a lot of work to do rebuilding my endurance, but I feel like I’m on the right path.
Yesterday I went ahead and signed up for the Twin Cities Marathon 10 Mile. I got a guaranteed entry for signing up for three of TCM's other races this year, one of those being the 10K the day before the 10 Mile. I've been waffling on whether I want to try a double-header but decided to go for it.
I'm hoping to make it to strength class tonight - May has been a bit of a bust for strength as well as running, although I've made it to two classes every week except for the week I was sick and dealing with peak hip and knee pain. I'd really like to get that back up to three classes a week, so we'll see. That said, I've been crushing my mobility and moderate cardio goals this month, so that feels pretty great.
5/1 Ran 2.31 miles, strength class

Breezy and cool run this morning with a few sprinkles. I lazed around in bed not wanting to run, but the promise of going out to breakfast at a great diner later finally got me moving.
Reached goal for the 100-mile club for this month. I may just have one more short run this month so won't add too many more miles to that. I will need to do some calculations for June goals.5 -

Also, I ran in just my sports bra and running shorts for the first time ever today. I've always been too self conscious to do it. But, it's hot and it's silly of me to care one bit what some random stranger thinks about my appearance while I'm running. So, I did it. It felt a little weird and I was self conscious, but air on skin feels great when you're dripping sweat! I'll get over it by the end of the summer, I'm sure.
It's a learning process. Before I was seriously running, I thought those asymmetric water bottles looked dorky, I never wanted to wear a sleeveless shirt, and I really preferred crew length socks.
Sunday I went out running quarter length socks and a singlet, with a couple of those dorky water bottles in a belt. Practical trumps stylish, as it also does with the issue of shoe colors.
^^^^ Yes, this. Just the other day I was pondering on the fact that I now go out and run without batting an eyelid in stuff I wouldn't have been seen dead in a couple of years ago.
I repeated last week's 10km run along the river trail this morning. This distance is still hard work for me, only the 2nd time I've gone that far since my injury, but I signed up for a 10k race on June 15th and decided I needed to get a run of that distance in every week for the few weeks before it. Last week (first time I'd gone that far this year) it took me 1 hour 17 minutes 30something seconds. Note: I'm run-walking all my runs now, varying the interval lengths depending on distances, and I'm really liking the system... my times are very similar to when I straight ran them, difference being I can walk afterwards and the next day! I was a little concerned because the race has a cut-off time of 1 hour 15 minutes and I wasn't sure I could make that. This morning, I ran the exact same 10km route in 1 hour 11 minutes 30something seconds. 6 minutes less than last week, and a 10km PR too! Ok, think I can stop worrying about not making the cull then, especially when race adrenaline is factored in. Now I just need to see if I can swap a few morning training runs for evening ones, the race is at 9.30pm whereas I usually run at 8am...
Oh and I passed goal for this month too, and still have another (short) run planned for Thursday before the month finishes. June starts with a 4.22km charity race on the 2nd :-)
May goal: 55km Run so far: 67.2km7 -
Oy. I have fallen behind on the thread again, lol.
Not going to reach goal this month, a stupid bug earlier knocked me out for a number of days, plus I had the Derby trip at the beginning of the month. Blah.
However! I did run 7 miles yesterday, which is the longest distance I've run since my stress reaction injury in the fall. Woohoo! I also finally picked and scheduled out my marathon training plan for the Marine Corps Marathon - I've decided to go with Hal Higdon Novice 1. My last 2 attempts to get to my 1st full marathon, both of which ended in injury, I went w/either a way too advanced plan (in 2017), and a probably overly complicated & also probably too advanced (included speedwork) plan (in 2018). I think I need to really just keep it simple, basic, and beginner, lol, even though I've been running for years. Fingers crossed I make it this year!

Anyone have recommendations for favorite hydration packs/vests that have pockets/storage on the front? I got a little bit of mold in the tube of mine and I'm using it as an excuse to buy a new one, since I have regretted since day 1 that I did not get one with pockets/storage on the front
And yes, I know I need to store the bladder/tube in the freezer, I think my subconscious was also looking for an excuse to buy a new one, lol1 -

Bull frog was always one of my favorites. I doubt you’d get 6 hours out of one application unless you went with a cream/lotion. A higher spf might leave enough residue to get you 6 hours with one application a or good ol’ zinc oxide type may resist the sweat and elements. They tend to be hot in my opinion. Perhaps a shirt, like @PastorVincent suggested. I looked at rash shirts and the like, not sure if running in them is a good idea. Maybe check out some tri wear?
Personally I use the spray sun block. If you could carry it... you can reapply.

I got this Nathan 4L vest a couple of months ago and have only used it for carrying stuff to and from the gym so far - the front pockets are great for a phone, handful of credit cards, key, and AirPod case, and the back has enough room for a light change of clothes and small towel. I haven't actually used it with the bladder since I've only been running short distances and it hasn't gotten hot here yet. But the pockets are great!2 -

May goal: 75 miles
5/1: 5.04 miles
5/2: 2.19 miles
5/7: 4.60 miles
5/8: 4.70 miles
5/9: 4.55 miles
5/12: 8.41 miles

5/18: 5.45 miles
5/19: 13.22 miles
5/22: 2.66 miles
5/24: 3.12 miles
5/26: 8.52 miles
5/18: 5.04 miles
73.42/75 miles completed
I ran 5.04 miles this morning. That brings me almost to my goal for May. I did set a lower goal this month since we had vacation but I still thought I might not make it. I had some extra rest days early in the month for my ankle, and then a small taper for the HM that was cancelled. I did end up running the HM distance on my own though, and I was able to get a couple of runs in on vacation. Today's run was so hot. It is hard to believe that it can be 76F at 6:00 am. @martaindale I should probably consider running in my bra, but I think I will always be too self conscious. Even though all of my sports bras look more like cropped tops than bras.
2019 races:
2/2/19: Catch the Groundhog Half Marathon - PR 2:15:17
5/18/19: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon - Cancelled due to weather6 -

@midwesterner85 - I have very fair skin so need a good long lasting sunscreen but I don't think there are any that will actually last 6 hours especially if you are sweating. I do find the beach sunscreens work better but they are greasy. I use a Neutrogena spray (Beach Defense I think it is called) but I also take a tiny travel tube of the lotion version to reapply.
@katiejane83 - I have this woman's Osprey hydration pack that I love. It has a ton of pockets but isn't bulky.3 -

I have run up to 27 miles in a single run with the X5 Ultra, and I plan to do my upcoming 50k with it also. My wife also has one she loves, another X5 Ultra.3 -
@PastorVincent that's awesome!
I ended up going for the X2 cause you can't really beat $39.67 (including shipping) for a vest, including a 1.5 liter bladder! On my longest summer training runs I've managed w/a 2 liter bladder, so I figure I'll have the included 1.5 liter + a water bottle in the front, or if I get my current 2L bladder cleaned out sufficiently I can use that as well.

Running 10k was tough today. I've got plenty of potential reasons for that but it doesn't matter, I tried to take it easy and enjoy but ultimately just got it done.
Probably not getting to 100 miles for the month, but I've followed my plan and have other awesome accomplishments for the month to make up for it
Upcoming races:
June 8: Daily American 10k (Somerset, PA, USA)
June 22: Rockwood Rotary HM (rail trail between Rockwood & Garrett, PA)9 -

Oh, for the 50k, I fully expect to refill it at least twice at the aid stations. In summer, 1.5L is not even a 10 mile run for me! Heh.2 -

Right... I think I had somewhere around 130-140 oz. of water in this past weekend's marathon and it was only 70's (maybe low 80's towards the end?). But in a race, I have 2-12 oz. bottles in my Nathan pack and just refill them at aid stations. I have no idea how anybody runs a marathon, even on roads, without carrying water. Even if I stopped at the aid stations and only drank the little cup of water each time, that would be way too little.2 -

I’d imagine that you can spray and run simultaneously. The continuous spray that’s easier than the pump or lotion. If you got an spf higher than normal, like I usually use a 4 to 20, might get a 30 or 50 to ensure some added protection. And I’m sure you’d easily find these options in your favorite product. I think you’d be effective in reapplying it on the run. When we did the SPAM run, I think there were some small samples of sunscreen, you could also consider travel size lotions to make it feasible on the run.0 -

Yes, perhaps. Ugh, just frustrating that they don't have something that lasts longer. Where are the scientists to design this?!0 -

The longest lasting one I have found is a good hat.
I use neutrogena spray, and the high spf ones last quite a while, but in practice, only the upward facing surfaces of my face and body get burned, so something that physically covers my forehead, cheeks, ears, chin, back of neck, and shoulders will do it - aka a hat and shirt. After the beginning of the season I don’t really burn on my arms and legs while running, because the angle is greater.1 -
-
@midwesterner85 @rheddmobile made a good point. How easily do you burn and is it possible you only need sunblock from 11-1? Or shorter duration while the sun is high? And also consider if the course is shaded any. Could you don a shirt during part of the race? Just food for thought, ya know. We’ll be anticipating what you figure out and how well it worked.
A nice reminder to all of us to incorporate some sun protection.1 -

I burn easily the first few times. It tans and then I burn less. I think I will just use spray and reapply periodically. Not going to wear more and get overheated faster.1 -
Running is a really funny sport. Had I been sitting in my house and looked out the window and saw quarter inch hail, huge pounding raindrops and all that, I would have been like "rest day!"
But since when I started out it was sunny and warm, and THEN all that hit... I was like, "What is a little ice being thrown angrily at me by the clouds? No reason to stop, that is for sure!"
