Headed to the gym for treadmill run today since it was a speed work day. Found a treadmill with a fan blowing on it! I have a feeling I will be spending many hours there this summer. I'm sticking to doing my shorter runs outside but the speed work and longer runs are officially moving indoors.

Ah well.

Yes, someone who doesn't know any better might go touching stuff. It is shocking (pun intended) that some people are more curious than careful.
I remember when a power pole came down in my shared driveway. I am safely in my house refusing to move until the power company or fire department show up, in contrast, my neighbour is picking her way over the live wires to come and chat. Mad.3 -
And in running news, it look as though I won't have too many issues hitting my May goal as long as I take a short run tomorrow, which shouldn't be too difficult as it's Friday, therefore, pizza night and I will have to earn a few extra hundred calories to counter all the pizza I know I will eat!

Hullo,
There is no chance I am going to go back and read 886 messages, so I'm hoping everyone is well, races have been run, injuries are healing and hailstones have been dodged.
May has been mostly NOT running for me. I realised quickly on that I could either train for a long-distance hike carrying a pack, or I could train for an off-road marathon, but not both at once. The hike came sooner and so it won.
80 miles or so, across tricky terrain at times trying not to fall off cliffs, 4,000 metres of elevation gain over seven days, camping in the wilds, avoiding sheep and cows licking the walls of our tents. Some sun, some rain, some wind to keep the midges from biting us (they like my buttocks). Lots of dehydrated food (I am now eating ALL the fruit), and water from dubious looking lochs.
Of course as we were congratulating ourselves in the pub at the end of a tiring week, resting our wobbling knees, news came in that the first runner on that days ultra-marathon was in. Yes, he'd done the same route, the same ascents and descents, in a little more than 15 hours. Pah!
See you in June folks, that marathon looms ever closer.....18 -
@girlinahat Beautiful ! The hike sounds amazing! I don’t think we have anything so beautiful in the US. Glad to see you back.0

@girlinahat that hike looks so amazing. Where is it?0

ah yes, thanks - forgot to say -
I hiked the 'Skye Trail', along some dramatic scenery of the Isle of Skye, just off the West coast of Scotland.10 -

So, funny story. My dad worked for many many years for Verizon (phone company). When he first started he was a cable splicer so knows all about the wires, and cables, and telephone poles, and all that jazz. Anyway, a number of years ago on one of our annual family vacations we were in the Canadian Rockies. We were walking somewhere where we ended up along a road and there was a cable down from some power lines. There was a very serious Canadian Mountie there, doing a very serious job of making sure no one came near the very serious issue of this cable being down on the ground. As we go past my dad turns to us and goes, that's a cable for cable TV, not a single thing dangerous about that! BUT! Better safe than sorry, I always say!4 -

Haha! Now that's good to hear! I'll confess to driving over downed cable lines. I figured the real danger is the live power wire arcing and bouncing around. So, I always expect a live one to be easily identified, probably not the safest mindset.
ETA @rheddmobile I went outside last night and listened to the frogs. There are 2 ponds close. The closest one, next door, was silent while the one a few houses to the east was strangely loud. If I weren't so gimpy, I'd have dragged dh with me to listen.4 -

Today's run was 5.04 miles and it was really good. It wasn't as hot as the last two day, but it was 99% humidity so pretty muggy. It was so foggy it seemed like the clouds were just sitting on the ground. I played Zombie's run so the atmosphere was good for it. I beat all the zombie chases and I didn't feel as slow as I did the last two days. It is always nice to have a good run after a run or two that feel so hard.
@Elise4270 , @garygse and @MobyCarp Thanks for the sock suggestions. I will try some of those out.
That wraps up May for me at 8.5 miles past my goal. See you all over in the June thread!

Today I got up at 5:45, walked the dog, did a half hour of yoga, finished the single most important assignment I’ve had at my job since I was hired a year ago (more on that later!), then got to run 1.69 miles to the gym where I lifted heavy things for an hour.
It looks like May is out with a bit of a whisper, running wise: I’m well under even my revised goal of 30 miles due to knee and hip issues, illness, and trying to take my comeback nice and easy. It’s my lowest mileage month of 2019, and the first month I didn’t top my 2018 total for that month. My strength numbers are low too, for the same reasons.
That said, it’s not a total wash on the fitness front - I managed to hit new records for minutes of moderate cardio (i.e. walking) and yoga. I’ve struggled in the past with “active rest” and am really happy that even in a tough health month I kept moving.
On the non-running side of life, the month has ended on a pretty big high note. I’ve been working as a document review attorney for about 5 years now, first at a staffing agency, and then for a small law firm that does plaintiff-side class actions (we sue big companies that do jerky things to large groups of people). My job is to look at the documents from the big jerky companies (and occasionally the plaintiffs) and code them by relevance and subject matter.
I have been enjoying the quality of life increases since starting at this law firm but have also been wanting to take on some writing and research work, the kind of thing I couldn’t find employment doing after graduating and ending my clerkships. So last week I met with my uber-boss and she was really supportive and enthusiastic about the idea but I didn’t expect to hear from her less than a week later with my first assignment!
So that’s what I turned in this morning before my run, and now I’m maybe having a bit of post-excitement crash. It might not seem like much, but this is the first time anyone has wanted me to use these skills in years, and I’m a little overwhelmed. This could be the beginning of something pretty awesome.
I’m going out of town for the weekend and looking forward to a running date with a friend - my only RL running friend at this point. I’d planned on strength tomorrow but might just take a full rest day as I’m feeling kind of achy. We will see. Either way, see you all in June!

Easy peasy run with some friends after work today. I was feeling kind of frazzled from just getting home yesterday and getting ready to leave again tomorrow, and this was a nice chance to unwind a bit with friends. About 15 of us (plus a spouse and two kids) are headed to the Niagara Falls Women's Half Marathon this Sunday. The last time I did a destination race with this group it was a complete riot, so I'm looking forward to a really fun weekend.
I might have a little warm-up run tomorrow so I'll hold off on calling that the total for the month, but it will not be much different. This is my highest May mileage total so far and it looks like my fastest average pace month ever. Which surprises me a little, but I did have two races in there and I feel like my everyday pace is a little bit faster.

This morning I developed an ache in my right hip abductor in the middle of my routine set of cone touches. I backed off the other morning exercises that hit that area, and it felt better by afternoon. So I went to club practice intending to just run about 5 easy miles.
Well. The hip abductor announced its presence as soon as I started running. Ran about 50 seconds, and decided it was telling me I had come back too strong. So today is an extra rest day. I'll see how it feels tomorrow, and either do an easy run or take my regularly scheduled rest day tomorrow.
The stress fracture isn't all better, but it's showing continual progress. The last thing I need is to hurt something else to put me on the couch.8 -
After work I had a slight headache, but was able to get in some water before it was time to go to the fields for soccer practice. I was stalling at the beginning as wasn’t feeling it, but things seemed to be clicking as pace was really good. I got a huge motivational bump when I hit the turn around point and was ahead of my husband (he went further down so he could end the run on the flat vs. the hill which I found out later). I knew I had turned before him, but he’s been a good minute or so ahead of me per mile so was expecting him to catch me right away. Feeling the urge to be competitive, I kept trying to make sure he didn’t pass me so each mile was negative splits. He couldn’t catch me as our pace ended up being the same for the last two miles. It was such a great run!! Outside of a sideache, the faster I ran the better my knee felt so hopefully I can keep that pace for the 10k next Saturday. The hilly runs at the camper seem to be helping. It wasn’t a fast run for him, but I needed to see that I could hold that pace.

So, may has been a weird combination of stilll winter, plus dodging spinny and icy death things. Which also led to someone else’s car trying to take up the same space as my car, and all the associated drama with that. And limited my ability to do inside running to avoid the weather crazy. I was SOOOO sure this would be my first ever month of meeting my actual goal (I’ve only been here like 2+ years now.... ugh)... well, I am 4 miles short (ok 3.9) and the only day left is an early to work plus travel day. And unless insomnia hits in a big way, I do not foresee actually making it. But, I think this is still the closest I’ve ever been to my goal since joining you all, and probably my highest mileage since June or August of 2017. And I also hit some lifting milestones while I was at it. So, even if I don’t get anything tomorrow, I’m considering it a win.
So, for work, we had a virtual 10K for a scholarship fund I had to do by tomorrow. And Tuesday was like 34 and windy and rainy, but I did it., but I was running out of time, and the rest of the week showed possible lightning/tornado/hail stuff, or had schedule conflicts. So, I nearly froze, but I did it. 6.2 for the 10K bit, another .4 to get home, And then at pt yesterday did another .4 as warmup for pt.

I ran a race! And placed 2nd in my AG!
This was kind of an impromptu thing, we got a flyer for the Memphis Italian Festival which is held every year only one street over from the tiny little house where my husband lived with his roommate when I was in college and we were first dating. So the neighborhood and the event are nostalgic for us. And lo and behold, the 5k was tonight! We were getting ready to run 5k anyway, so off we went.
I wasn’t planning on racing it since my Achilles’ tendon was annoyed last time I went fast, but then I made the mistake of looking at past years’ finishers and noticed I could easily make the podium. This is a pretty decent sized race but for some reason not very competitive in my AG. There’s one fast lady, and everyone else basically runs at my easy pace. On the other hand the men’s senior masters competition is blistering! When I was checking my time, the older man next to me was grousing to his wife about placing second - he was 68 and ran 22 something. The winner for his AG ran 20:21!
Anyway, hopefully I got away with it, my ankle is a little tender but not bad so far. Won’t know til tomorrow morning. Time was 28:14 but I think the course was a little short. First split came in under 9 minutes and gee golly it felt good. However, the heat started to catch up to me on the third mile. Dew point very unpleasant 71, temp not that bad really, mid 80s, but I just couldn’t keep up my pace.
This is a fun little neighborhood event - benefitting the athletic program of the next door parish school - with party tents, vendors, rides, two live music stages, the whole nine yards. Our race entries include free tickets for a second day so we can go back on Italian food contest day. Today we sampled free meatballs while we sat in the shade waiting for the awards.
I love that the shirts are purple!
There were no finishers’ medals, and the awards page didn’t mention medals, so I was surprised and pleased to get a medal! My husband and I are caught up to each other now, he won an AG medal in the 10k I couldn’t run because I was injured.
Ciao, Bella!20 -
Well done @rheddmobile !!1

Nominal May mileage goal: more than zero
Real Goals: Recover from stress fracture without making it worse.
Today's notes – Quick test of the sore hip abductor this morning felt better, but still not right. I'll honor the scheduled rest day today, so May is final at 21.21 miles. That smashes the nominal goal of anything more than zero, and the month ends on a cautionary note of backing off.
I'm 80% decided to DNS McMullen Mile next Friday. I'm certainly capable of running a mile, but a mile race is running *hard*. That's too risky for where I am today, and could well still be too risky for where I'll be a week from today.

Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.

Great job @rheddmobile !1

The last thing I need is to hurt something else to put me on the couch.

@rheddmobile - Congratulations! That looks so fun and you ran a great race! Love the shirt and medal!
@juliet3455 - didn't you have terrible fires last year too? Wow - it looks like all of Alberta is in danger! Stay safe!
I had planned for a run this morning but had an emergency with our elderly neighbor that kept me at the ER until after 1am and I need to go back to the hospital this morning. I may still get in a run at some point but I won't make my goal in any event. Was hoping to get close to 75 at leas but 69.42 may just have to be it for this month.6
