I did it. I ordered a set of Trekz Aftershocks Titanium headphones. These are the BONE CONDUCTING kind that do not go in your ears at all. Amazon had them at $83 with Prime Shipping. Was hoping to try them today, but my schedule did not work out well, so hopefully tomorrow.
After I have had them for a bit I will post a review. So stay tuned!
I have these! They survived me dumping water all over my head for almost 5 hours the other day. Sometimes the sound gets a little vibratey, more than I'd expect for headphones I paid almost $100 USD on (I think because of sweat), but I do like them, can hear things around me, and the battery lasts forever before I need to charge them.
Good to hear! I am worried about their water survival. I have had JLabs, Jay Bird, and other expensive brands that all CLAIM to be safe for running in the rain and etc, and none have lasted save my Plantronics Back Beats.
I hope to get the full 2-year warranty life out of them. If I have to replace them every two years, that will be okay. That will be umm 24 times longer than most I have had to deal with at least.
Not hugely concerned on audio quality since I mostly listen to the spoken word while I run and I am sure they will deliver that quite well. I did test them earlier with Skillet Monster and they are a bit tinny, but not bad really. I felt the bass more than heard it, but I think that is a limitation of the tech.1 -

I use them and love them. Only downside: I bought them in Dec. and they stopped charging at the end of Apr / beginning of May (can't recall exactly). I put in for a warranty replacement, but I had to do the marathon on 5/11 with in-ear earbuds. The replacement was actually delivered to my home while I was out running the marathon... just poor timing.
ETA: I ran with them last Sat. in light rain for a couple hours... then the skies opened and it was pouring! It was worse than standing in the shower. I put on a rain jacket with a hood at that point, so not sure if they could have withstood standing under a waterfall or not.2 -
Cool! @ContraryMaryMary and myself are the resident kiwis! (there is another but can't recall their name off the top of my head)
Rotorua is awesome, lots to do - kinda a tourist mecca. Given its the middle of winter in August, a tent wouldn't necessarily be the best unless you are used to camping in the colder months. Tongorairo is definitely worth a visit. I'm in New Plymouth - about 4 hrs drive from Hamilton and there are good trails all around Mt Taranaki (and ill go for a run with you if we can make it work lol). It all depends what exactly you are into. It's skiing season as well and the slopes are only a couple of hrs drive from Hamilton
Thanks, @Avidkeo! This is just the kind of info I was looking for! Good to know that June (& August!) are generally too cold for camping.... We sometimes go in late fall here near Seattle, but the weirdness of solo camping in the off season would probably also be as uncomfortable as cold temperatures if it’s anything like here. I’ll get in touch if I’m near New Plymouth! And I love hot springs, so am glad Rotorua sounds good. I like snowboarding too, but do a lot of that here, so with a limited window of time, I’ll probably gear more towards hiking & exploring (I only have a few days). Thanks again!!

Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
Sunny and mid-60s F today. Legs were a little tight and stiff, but nothing too bad to deal with.

Any lurkers thinking they don't got what it takes to hang with this group or perhaps you think you'll wait and join in for June?
Give in and introduce yourself.
I walked 0.55 miles today. Yes, less than 1 kilometer. It took me 16+ minutes, with two trekking poles... Not sure that's any easier than crutches, but I got out. Its windy AF, and my allergies will probably be horrible tonight, but I got out. https://www.kxii.com/content/news/Attempted-kidnapping-of-female-runner-under-investigation-in-Ardmore-509585381.html
I told DH I was going to go walk and he stopped me, said there was a near abduction close to the park and I shouldn't go alone. Horrible. But glad the young woman successfully resisted. Dh went with me. He wants me to carry pepper spray. So, guess I'll need to be mindful of the potentials.
ETA think I'll also take one of my dogs since I'd only be walking. Ones super fat. So... We can waddle together.11 -
Ran with my After Shokz Trek Titanium headphones. About 90 mins on the run. It was really nice how much better I could hear cars and other things around me. I could hear them before but not as well.
The vocals on the book (The Eye of the World) were loud and clear, but it is not a noise route. I have one route that I probably will not run again for at least a week or two that goes by train tracks. It will be interesting to see how well they compete with a train going by at 40 or 50mph not 5 meters away. With other headsets, often I just pause the book until either the train or I leave the area.3 -

Real Goals: Recover from stress fracture without making it worse.
Today's notes – I got to where I couldn't stand to read about people running, so I've missed the last 300 or 400 posts here. Today, I'm back. Not doing much yet, but it's a start.
Yesterday the foot did not feel pain when squeezed at the metatarsal. It was still swollen, and I still have some weakness in the joints at the base of the toes; but today I was able to do 3 sets of 10 one-leg calf raises on the block with 10 lbs. of weight. It's not right, but it was good enough to attempt the very beginning of my return to running.
Set out for a known 5K flattish route, with the protocol of 2 minutes running, 2 minutes walking. The foot isn't totally right; the discomfort (not really rising to the level of pain) in the joints at the base of the toe was noticeable in the second minute of most of the running intervals. And my foot could definitely tell the difference between concrete sidewalks and asphalt road while running. But I completed the planned route, was still able to walk, and it wasn't a known total disaster.
Tomorrow morning I'll find out whether I overdid things today, but I'm pretty confident I didn't do any major damage to myself.
Grand total of about 16 minutes running, for a bit over 2 miles of running distance and about a mile of walking distance. It's not much; but that's 16 more minutes of running than I was able to do in the entire month of April. Goal for May has been achieved.
The 5K tomorrow is a definite DNS. Yes, I could go the distance. It would be stupid to put myself into a race environment on the second day running after coming back from a stress fracture. This week, I'm not that stupid.

If you live in the US, then I've mentioned Achievement before where you earn $10 per 10,000 points...this normally takes me about 10 weeks or so. Just checked today to see how much I had left to do, and I'm this close...I may have to take a nap or something to get that last point.
In other news, I'm well on the way done with my goal for the month. I set that goal because I'm not really training for anything right now and simply maintaining instead, which is a good thing because it's getting pretty darned warm here, even at 3 am.

I just looked, I am at almost 30,000 points since you first mentioned it. I pretty much set it up and forgot about it. I occasionally think to open it to click on a survey or something, but pretty much go weeks without recalling it. I guess at some point I should do something with those points.

@MobyCarp Glad to hear the recovery is going well, albeit frustratingly slow. You only mentioned concrete and asphalt...you're probably already doing this, but any grass sections you can run on during the route, switch to those...it's what I did when I was told I could start running again while recovering from a stress fracture in my left tibia, and it helped lessen the impact.3

That's awesome! It usually takes about 3-4 business days from when I claim the reward to seeing the money in my PayPal account. Or if you're feeling generous, you can simply donate it to charity.2 -

Howl at the Moon - Nighttime 5k - August 2019
<plus some others that I can not recall>
202? - Disney World Dopey! (if can raise funds)
2019 GOAL: Knock a full hour off my 50k time at Hell Have No Hurry2 -
Husband wanted to go to the gym; I wanted to run and do a shorter session at the gym. So he dropped me off along the way and I ran 7.5 km to get there. I won't take that route again. The hills were awesome, but I crossed paths with at least 50 coal trucks on just a 6k stretch. Most were speeding, and even though I'd say most saw me and moved over if they could, the ones that didn't basically blew tiny rocks and dirt all over me while I covered my face and at times jumped into the brush on the side of the road. Yeah, not my idea of safe.
Got to the gym, ate a banana and did a short strength workout.
Surprisingly, the running part actually felt good, and I was surprised at my pace, especially considering the hills.
Signed up for another race.
Upcoming races:
June 8: Daily American 10k (Somerset, PA)
June 22: Rockwood Rotary HM (rail trail between Rockwood & Garrett, PA)9 -
8.98 miles tonight. This weekend's marathon is in Rochester, MN on Sunday. Anyone else planning to run that?
4 -
Goal is 55 miles this month.
5/1....3.12 miles
5/2...3.09 miles
5/4....13.1 miles (mini-marathon)
5/9....6.63 miles
5/16....4.15 miles.....slow miles, cool weather...nice breeze. Completed after working a 12 hour shift and attending a meeting at work.
5/18....2.59 (treadmill)
5/19...no workout due to thunderstorms
5/20...8.99 miles (Monon trail).....cool weather approximately 62 degrees with occasional cool winds. Goal was to try to run 13 minute miles at up-tempo pace in order to build up my stamina. Noted that during most of my races, I became more fatigued after 9 miles. I was able to sprint easier and ran mile 6 at 12:24 and mile 7 at 17 seconds faster than mile 1 (repeated mile). Had ache in right hip after starting but went away after 2nd mile. Slept great last night.
5/22....2.71 miles (treadmill).....plus 10 minutes on stationary bike. Lots of sweating!
5/24 ....6.47 miles (Monon trail)....72 degrees....very humid. I'll be honest. I didn't want to be out there. Was meeting my girlfriend for celebratory dinner. Decided to run at fat burning pace and was able to maintain it for the most part. Tired at 6 miles. It is much harder to run at slower pace than up tempo. I felt tense until middle of mile 2. As you know I listen to music when running...usually shuffle my music and was surprised by Frampton's "Grab a Chicken...put it back". I love that song for some reason. Anyway, I always feel great when done.
Total is 50.85
Goal is 55 miles....almost there.

So keeping up with this month's thread better than most month's threads.
@katharmonic ...sorry about the corral mixup. It looks like you did the best in an adverse situation. With the race being so short, it is hard to make up ground when you have to get around walkers. When I ran the mini-marathon last year, I had to come to a stop a couple of times due to participants taking selfies. GRRRRR! I almost didn't sign up for this year, but decided that each race is an experience. Circumstances should be better next time. I am sure that runners objected to the race planners.
@mobycarp....I am glad to see you back. I know that it is tough when you can't run due to injury, but you have so much wisdom and are a real inspiration to us not-so-fast runners. In fact, I thought about you when one of my races was on a rainy day. I thought that it was only a half....not like @MobyCarp faced when running the Boston last year.
@Avidkeo ...I also have a house to sell. I may pm you when I get close to selling mine. Good luck. I know that it is such a headache.
Good news. My girlfriend was offered a job and she starts June 3. We celebrated tonight at the Bonefish Grille, and I have to admit drinking 3 glasses of Merlot, which is probably 2 glasses more than my limit. (I am such a light weight). It was good to see her happy, and I was a little jealous because she is starting a new job with new opportunities. She was offered her old job back. Her place of employment called her twice. The first time she told them that she would think about it and then today, she said, "no thanks". They were going to change her status from fired to resignation. I know that she will be happier at the new job. Sometimes (at least my experience) the people who have been at a situation for a long time are taken for granted.
Well, happy running everyone....I should get another run in on Sunday and Monday and meet my goal! Good luck to anyone racing this weekend, and I hope that our injured runners heal quickly.

Arrived in Iowa this afternoon. The forecast for pretty much the whole time I'm here looks like scattered thunderstorms so I thought I should take advantage of a period of non-rain and get a short run in - plus then I would feel much more justified in my eating and drinking choices at dinner. It was a rather rude welcome to running in heat and humidity. There seemed to be a nice breeze when I started out, but good grief, I am not used to this and it was a slog.
Also got to immediately experience a tornado warning - we sighted a possible funnel cloud while we sat out in the beer garden at dinner and one did touch down south of the city. Not sure I really miss living in the midwest!9 -

Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
Today was supposed to be longish and slowish, but the heat and humidity made me change my mind. Hope that's a sign of getting smarter as a runner instead of getting tired and lazy. Upcoming week is going to result in shuffling my training schedule around anyway. Did meet the low May goal; if I can squeeze in an 11k run, will get to 135k for May.
2019 Races:
4-13 Shine the Light 5K - 31:12 chip time; First Place male 65 and older
6-1 Freedom 5K (Will be off the schedule due to another commitment)
6-30 Strides for Starfish 5K5 -
10 ugly miles this morning. Felt like the hottest run of the year so far. Took it slower than almost any weekend run, and felt horrible. Don't know why. Probably thinking too much about the new job starting Tuesday. Have worked for the last 20+ years basically by myself. Now am going to be part of a 6 member development team. Going to take a lot of getting used to. Actually really dreading it 😣.

A cut-back week for the long run. I intended to do at least 7-8 miles but the humidity was getting to me. And the loop I picked got me back to my car at 6 and I was not able to resist the urge to stop. The temps were not that bad and there was a nice breeze for most of it, but I still felt really heavy and slow. The river along the route was high and there is some minor flooding (pics under spoiler) which could get worse with the weather forecast.
Getting close to the 100-mile goal for the month, so I should be able to exceed that even with tapering.8 -

Pretend they are all runners. And it is so humid here, figure it is for you too.

Depending on how it is done it could be great, or bad. I left my last job because they introduced "Extreme Programming" which is where all the devs share a TABLE. Not a cube, or a desk, but a table. Not only that it was TWO DEVELOPERS PER COMPUTER - AT THE SAME TIME.
I hard noped right out of that. Stunk too. I really liked working there before they changed to that model. Most of their senior and experienced programmers left when I did. Was a massive brain drain. I would feel bad, save I spent months fighting the change and warning them what would happen if they pushed ahead. I pulled the eject handle about a month or two before my department was going to make the switch. Ah well, my new job pays 10% more at least.
In my new job, I am part of a small team, but we have our own desks, and computers5 -

A lady I sometimes run (part of) my Saturday run with: She stated she went to a retirement party for her husband's co-worker. She stated, "guess what the topic was that evening?" I said, "Trump." She laughed and stated, "no, it was you!" She explained that I was the topic, not by name, but by "that woman that runs all the time."
My giggle for the week, besides the cattle stampedes I have caused because cows are not used to humans running down the road.9 -

That sounds like a HORRIBLE idea! Who would think that would be a productive, efficient working environment? If they had any idea how most software developers work, they would NEVER have suggested that. Good for you (and everyone else) for showing them what you thought of that, and got the heck out of there!1 -

I'm not a developer but even I can tell making developers share computers would be a hard nope. Seriously did they just not listen to reason at all in a new "trying to be hip" thing or something?0 -

Good luck at the new job! So brave to be changing course after 20+ years. I too am thinking about a job change but a little too chicken (20 years at the same hospital). So I greatly admire your courage.
It was humid yesterday when I ran....not so much hot, but it felt extremely difficult to pick up my feet and propel forward. I might change it up and run on some nearby trails.
Tomorrow I will be "stuck" on the northwest part of town after my shift due to the Indy 500. I won't be able to get home until 1 p.m. So plan to run in the morning after my shift, and then sack out at the house that I am planning to sell later this year.5
