@juliet3455 - Calvin and Hobbes are my favorite!! Clearly where my pup got his name
@polskagirl01 - Hope you have a great visit to the US this summer! PA and VA are beautiful!
@elise3214 - So glad you all are ok! Saw the tornado watch for your area and was worried - looked like the storms were going right over the area north of Dallas. I also have friends in Denton so hoping they are all ok too (haven't heard yet). I think that those of us who have never lived in an area with severe storms are probably a lot more freaked out by them than those that live there.3 -

In case one of our many mutual MFP Running Friends is close by for a meet and greet at an event?
Like you I like to keep myself close to HM Ready ( recreational not race level ) as it is easier to maintain conditioning at that level than it is to do a build back up to it.
Basically now that I'm here and have the work travel schedule from my husband, and a kids' activity schedule from the grandparents, I need to sit down and see if any races will fit in-between the two. Will keep you all (or "yinz" in the local language) posted!
For now all I've got on the calendar is this:
June 8: Daily American 5k/10k Challenge, Somerset, PA
I lived in Lynchburg, VA for 7 years. Their big race is a 10 miler, in the fall so I think you will miss that one. They have the normal smattering of 5ks, but I do not think they have much in the way of anything else major.
Too bad you can not make HHH - everyone I talked to so far said it is a great well run race.4 -
eleanorhawkins wrote: »Apparently today I needed a good run. My body and conscious brain did not know this, but my subconscious apparently did. I went out for what was supposed to be a standard 5 kilometres before work. Zoned out so completely I missed my turnaround point, by the time I realised that I'd gone 5km already. Impromptu weekday long run it is then! Good job I was going real slow anyway. I hadn't run more than 8km since the HM I ran back in December, so am expecting to feel it later.
It actually works out well though. Not only do I feel awesome now, it gives me more days to recover before I do another long run (scheduled for Thursday next week as I'm running a little charity race on the Sunday) and also means I have space for two more 10km training runs before my 10km race on June 15th. Now I just have to work on shaving 3 minutes off my time so I don't miss the cut-off at said race :-/
May goal: 55km Run so far: 48.9km
those are my favorite runs, when you think you'll only do X distance then your legs and brain go Nah we are going to amp it up today cause we can! feels awesome. So glad to see you are doing so well!!!3 -
Glad to hear everyone is OK!!! been thinking about you guys.
Thanks @scott6255 I'm feeling so much better this week. Combination of less stress (yay agent), eating much better, and I think the iron supplements are helping to because I don't feel so bone tired all the time now.
@elise4270 ohhh thats looking really good! how long has it been now? Remember the usual is 6 weeks for a good knit, and 6 months to be fully healed! slow and steady remember, this is your marathon lol. Work looks like it will be fairly similar to yesterday, I only have 2 booked in. But you never know what will walk (or hobble) in the door. Today's viewing will probably be most of the rest of the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I'm feeling less guilty now because I literally have nothing else to do.
Work FINALLY advertised my role yesterday, they've only had 3 weeks to get it listed for pittys sake. I'm a bit gutted because I really hoped to be here to hand over to the new radiographer, but there is no chance of that happening now. Oh well, not my problem, I gave work 3 weeks notice I was probably leaving and 6 weeks actual notice so its all on them. I've written an instruction manual and will leave my contact number for the new radiographer if they need help. When I took the job, the last radiographer had left 6 weeks before I started and not in a good way, so I was literally shown the room and asked when I can start with patients. It took me about a day to get everything figured out. I do not want to leave that kind of legacy. i think today is all about letting go (insert Elsa giff here)
And I did an 8km run this morning. slow and steady. it felt GREAT! I'm just feeling good again yay. I don't think I'm going to get my goal, 120km, ive done 72.5k so far and only have a week left of the month. I'm now aiming for around 110km so only 10k short. Mostly I'm aiming to stick to my training plan.7 -
Goal is 55 miles this month.
5/1....3.12 miles
5/2...3.09 miles
5/4....13.1 miles (mini-marathon)
5/9....6.63 miles
5/16....4.15 miles.....slow miles, cool weather...nice breeze. Completed after working a 12 hour shift and attending a meeting at work.
5/18....2.59 (treadmill)
5/19...no workout due to thunderstorms
5/20...8.99 miles (Monon trail).....cool weather approximately 62 degrees with occasional cool winds. Goal was to try to run 13 minute miles at up-tempo pace in order to build up my stamina. Noted that during most of my races, I became more fatigued after 9 miles. I was able to sprint easier and ran mile 6 at 12:24 and mile 7 at 17 seconds faster than mile 1 (repeated mile). Had ache in right hip after starting but went away after 2nd mile. Slept great last night.
Total is 41.67 miles.
@Elise4270....I hope that you stay safe. I saw on CNN, boats rescuing people in Oklahoma and heard that more tornadoes were on the way....scary stuff!

Wow! I kinda think I should rethink not watching tv and listen to local radio... wish @WhatMeRunning would pop in and let us know how Kansas is doing. Wait... aren’t you @midwesterner85 in Kansas? I still miss Chris. He was one of my running twins. Or @ceciliaslater how’s Tulsa area?3 -

So these may have happened today and I can't wait to take them for a spin. Maybe a short one tomorrow if not I won't have a chance until Sunday...

Race report - JP Morgan Corporate Challenge (3.5 miles):
Well, this was a bit of a mixed bag. The weather was pretty ideal at 59 degrees F and partly cloudy. A little wind off the lake but not terrible. I got there early because construction traffic is a nightmare right now, especially right after work, so I allowed plenty of extra time. Given that extra time, I took a short warm-up loop, which I don't usually do before races.
When they started announcing it was time to line up in the corrals some of us realized there was a problem with the bib colors and corrals. They had 4 colors of bibs - red, green, blue and white - with red for elites and white for walkers. The green and blue however, were obviously switched from what they should have been. I was a blue bib and expected to be in the second corral but was surprised that they announced green was second and blue was third. I thought I had put a time estimate down that should not have been that far back, especially when they started to say the blue was walkers and runners. A woman standing next to me said her friend had put down a 10-minute slower time and was in the green while she was in the blue with a similar time as I put down. As we looked at the green corral, there were people in jeans while runners I know to be fairly fast were back in the blue. So this did not bode well and I was highly annoyed.
I snuck up as best I could as we moved toward the start line but was clearly behind a lot of people intending to walk from the start. I admit I was a little snippy in asking walkers to move toward the right and I feel bad because they lined up as they were told (although common sense in not walking 5 people across would be nice). It was a seriously bad screw-up on someone's part.
Anyway, I was a bit aggressive in trying to get out of that pack in the beginning and ended up going out too fast in the first mile. Garmin logs it as my fastest mile, which may not be true but is probably my fastest mile split in a race. But I started to fade a bit and then was struggling in the second mile. I stopped for water, which I needed but was hard to get going again. My pace gradually decreased until about 2. 7 miles in. I took one more water stop and then talked myself into making a bit of a push to the finish. I was so happy to make the little bit of turn toward the finish line and I gave it a little more of a kick and then felt like collapsing crossing the line.
I felt like I should have done better and I was kind of disappointed. Last year I finished in 32:40 three days after running a half marathon, and tonight I thought with fresh legs I could probably beat that. But I ended up with 33:28. Those seconds at the water stops and going out too fast did me in.

Hugs that sounds so frustrating! and really they should have spotted their mistake early on. I gather you cannot change corrals once you are allocated? I've never been in an event like that so have no idea how it works.1 -
Rest day yesterday, then back to bike commute and more running today—I am trying to get to a 20-25 mpw average, but am still in the midst of this month-long bike challenge. Whew! But my run was nice. This one goes right by the Theo chocolate factory. I haven’t yet decided whether those chocolate aromas during the run are a good thing or a bad thing. I love chocolate (and Theo is good chocolate!), but it’s actually a bit unappetizing when I’m sweating away...

@katharmonic What an annoying mixup! I had to do some math to figure out your pace at the odd distance, pretty good finish even if it was slower than last year! How was the team spread?1
-
Did 5k again today, my pace is slowly creeping back to normal, 10:30ish today with a fast finish at 9. Felt slightly more heat adjusted than last time at 90+ degrees, probably because the weather headed our direction was giving us a stiff wind. Hope everyone in the path of the weather today is okay!
It’s officially summer here, whatever the calendar says! It’s springtime when you see snakes, and it’s summer when you see BATS! We were at the park running at sundown and there were bats swooping all over eating the mosquitoes. I think the bats live under the main bridge across the Wolf, since they kept emerging from there. It’s a good place for bats!
I have one more update on my little home invader. The next day he was in the wall of our house (we had found one end of his tunnel but not the other end) cheeping. Fetched him out and he seemed lonely and dehydrated. So we called around and placed him with a rehabilitator who is going to keep him isolated for two weeks, since he has a hurt paw, and then put him with other babies to be socialized and released. It’s evident from how hungry he was when given a bottle that the first vet we visited was incorrect and he wasn’t weaned. Second vet has fostered raccoons before and has more experience. We drove him out to the foster home and he looked much happier almost instantly to be near other raccoons.
My husband with the little guy at the vet’s:12 -
@katharmonic - that is so frustrating... I am sure some of the issue with your pacing was frustration and knowing you went out too fast. It can really take a toll mentally with how you feel during the race. I bet there will be a bunch of complaints too about the mix up.
@simcon1 - I love Theo chocolate. I'm sure you have been on their little tour? When we took it and ended up where they were making all the little hand made chocolates and then into the store, I just wanted to buy them all! My current favorite is a dark chocolate with tart cherries and almonds!
@rheddmobile - That little raccoon is so adorable. In the 1st picture he didn't look as small as he is in this one. He looks so comfy all snuggled up against your husband too! We had a mom with two babies in our back yard and they climbed up one of the power poles. Those babies were huge compared to your little guy.
Running on the lumpy grass at agility last night has really messed with my hips and leg. I am so sore and stiff. I worked with my trainer this morning and we did some squat to rows, knee tucks and things I worried might make it worse but it actually felt much better, for a while. Now I am having a hard time moving again. I am worried I won't be able to walk tomorrow let alone run and I don't know what I will do the the agility trial on Thursday if I still can't run. I have never had so much difficulty recovering from a race before...9 -

@katharmonic that is so frustrating about the corral mixup! Hate it when things are so obviously wrong and it doesn't get corrected. Well good on you for getting through that mess and giving it your all. There will be other races.2
-
@katharmonic UGH! Sorry about that.0

Thank you @avidkeo, @rheddmobile, @shanaber, @Scott6255, @PastorVincent. I'm still annoyed waking up this morning, mostly with myself and how I handled the pacing. Every race is not going to be awesome and a personal best. There were something like 6000 people there so I don't think they could reasonably "fix" it at the last minute even if they realized the mistake. It's really surprising that a big race franchise like this could screw it up - and it makes me wonder where in the process it happened. @noblsheep - ha, yes, I noticed the white walkers too.
I don't know how our team did overall, we don't find out until later what all the scores are. But I do know the women's winner was from our team - she has won it like 5 years in a row and I think I heard her time might have been a course record. In other news, we had catered BBQ after I made that complaint about the food in my last post! Too bad it was all cold by the time we got it.
@rheddmobile I'm so happy your little raccoon is safe with a foster home and some raccoon buddies. I was worried about him.6 -

That is a frustrating mistake for a big franchise to make - and it surprises me that no one was able to catch it.
I'm curious if assigning corals by speed is somewhat regional. I've heard of it in the really massive 10k+ participant races but have not seen it myself. That said, I think the biggest races I've been in had maybe 2-3K people so that probably is the main difference.1 -
@rheddmobile aww that go great about the little guy. I've been thinking about him. Glad he'll be taken care of.1

Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
Cloudy, breezy, with a temperature in the mid 50s F today. Got a nice threshold run in -- surprised myself by how well I ran. Guess it makes up for all the "old" runs I've managed.
@katharmonic Every race successfully finished uninjured is a good race.
2019 Races:
4-13 Shine the Light 5K - 31:12 chip time; First Place male 65 and older
6-1 Freedom 5K (Will be off the schedule due to another commitment)

Well, I'm sick. I think I caught a cold on the flight home. Just feeling really run down today. I was supposed to do speed work today, but wasn't up for it. So, went out with my husband for part of his run. Luckily this was a cut back week anyway so my plan won't be affected too much by my cold.

@katharmonic sorry about the frustrating start to your race. Good job hanging on though. When you factor in the organizers' mistake, you probably did a lot better than you think.4

This morning was really more of intervals or fartleks due to sprinklers and dogs (and cats and squirrels). I do like the graph Strava provides of the route trend:
It may not be an accurate representation but it's still nice to see improvement.8 -
Saw surgeon#1 today after seeing surgeon #2 yesterday. Surgeon#1 says he'll see me at my comeback race. Haha! So, yay! Will run again. Grumpy labrum will have to wait, so I have a medrol pack to see if that'll calm it down and I can work on walking. He offered a steroid shot, but uhh... Probably the better option but I didn't wanna have a shot in my joint today. Call me a baby, that's fine.
What is with all these women wearing horrible perfume? Is it a thing? Is it expensive and part of a new trend? It's horrible. Fake flowering perfume should not be worn by anyone, ever.
And also unrelated, I was accepted to a college for some upper division coursework. Ohh! Yay! More smarts!
And I have a giant Panera steak arugula sandwich today.someone took "extra" seriously today. 😍10 -

I'm salivating over here! Oh I only had 3 patients yesterday lol. Almost finished sabrina haha. Zelda and blackwood just had their day..
3 weeks of work left (Friday doesn't count because I'm only doing a half day and it will be mostly taken up with tidying and farewells. I'm starting to get really excited. And while I've offloaded the stress, hubby seems to have taken it on. I figure there is nothing else we can do for 2 weeks, and then we will be trying to sell most of our staff. He's getting a little bogged down in minor details. Sadly, as I know pointing that out to him doesn't generally help I kinda just have to leave him to it, and support when I can. He's now switched to worrying about where we will live when we get to New Town. We will actually move on around the 19th June. The auction is on the 3rd July. There is a possibility it may sell before that but for ease we are sticking to that. If the house sells, we are sweet and can afford to rent somewhere. But the worry now is if it doesn't sell. I suggested we switch the mortgage payments to interest only, and rent the house out till we sell. We cannot afford to rent and pay a mortgage. But renting it out is a last resort as that has its own set of concerns. It would rent fast, i have no worries about that.
Anyway that was a novel. Thanks for listening, it helps a lot for me to talk it through and often typing it out really helps!
So no run this morning, rest day.8
