However, there were more than a couple people running with cowbells during the 12k. THAT was annoying. Please don't run with cowbells.
Runners with cowbells: NO!!!!!!!!
Seriously, they were running with a cowbell? What on earth was wrong with them?
I have not come across this yet. Spectators sure, but runners? What the heck? Why?
I can speculate for one of them. She was a kid, maybe 8 or 9 years old, running with her mom. Mom was ahead of her a little ways and she rang the bell to get her attention so they could slow down/walk. I didn't mind that so much and thought it was actually a pretty good idea.
The 40+ year old man running alone with one? I didn't ask. I figured he was one of the 40,000 other people there who had lost their mind and was trying to have fun. He did look like he was having fun. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I guess if I was a pacer, I could ring the bell in beat at least. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯2 -

Just imagine the level of annoyance that would cause for the poor runners with close to your time goal! Cowbell, the whole way through the race!0 -

As others have said, once I'm that far, no way I'm walking home, too boring for that!
Was looking at the information for my July HM, and it turns out they are really really strict on the No Earphones rules (seriously? why!!). So what do you do when you cant wear earphones? Is this a common thing? I'm guessing its because the run is happening on rural roads with high speed limits. but most of us are sensible to have our volume turned down. Do I just need to embrace the suck and do a few runs without music? I hate listening to myself breathe lol. Or should I be *that* runner who plays music on my phone...
Oh and slightly amusing story, there is a guy who always runs the same route as me, but in the opposite direction, so we often cross paths. he never talks, never says hi to me, smiles, nods or anything. its like I'm not there. Ok dude, that's fine, happy being like that. Though he always says hi to my neighbour who is often sitting on his deck in the morning in summer. Well this morning I pass him just as I was about to turn, so I ended up following him for a bit then passing him! I was really self conscious about this, I made a point of sticking to my usual pace, and I left him in the dust. Its awkward seeing someone running every day and they never say hi so passing him like that was just weird.
On the headphones: It's weird, I almost always train with podcasts in my ears (earbuds in one ear only, or now the aftershokz (or however it's spelled) bone-conducting headphones, so I can still hear), but don't typically race with it. If I'm focused or have people around me, music/podcasts annoy me. I sometimes put music in for a longer race like 10k+, but not necessarily. Last weekend I ran the whole marathon with the aftershokz off and around my neck because I didn't feel like getting the phone out to turn anything on. They look stupid in the few pictures I was in, and I dumped so much water on my head, I was sure they'd be ruined, but I think they're fine. I had them if I needed them. I talked to people a little bit, paid attention to what was going on around me, focused on staying on pace, and contemplated how everyone around me has had the advantage of significantly higher testosterone throughout their entire lifetime, and none have ever given birth (let alone twice) and here I was holding my own right alongside them... and then the pacer's balloon hit me in the face and I moved on to other thoughts.
On greeting other runners, I'd start giving him a little runner's wave/nod, and just be entertained if he keeps ignoring you Some people are just like that.
Honestly? I tend to not acknowledge other runners either. I hide behind my 92% light blocking sunglass and just push on by. This goes for triple if the other runner is a female. I notice them and track their progress until they are sufficiently far away to no longer be of interest, but talk to them? Say hi? No. I will change my route before I do that.
I do try not to be rude though so I will sometimes wave back if they wave first. I do see several of the same people when I run down in the city every time and most of them I have never acknowledged, nor have they acknowledged me.
In a race, I am slightly more social. But only slightly. I am INTJ after all
On second thought, I guess you're right. He's probably just in his zone and doesn't like being social while running.1 -
@shanaber I have a 2 year old collie x cocker cross called Marvin. He's bonkers and super fast at agility. We've only been doing it a year so not competing and he hasn't learnt to weave on his own yet but hes totally fearless! What breed is yours?
@PastorVincent @kgirlhart @juliet3455 @MegaMooseEsq thanks for all the tips guys. Not sure if it was the cooler temp, the audiobook, new route or the slower pace but easily did 4 miles tonight and could have gone further I think.
I ran to a specific spot along the coast and back instead of the usual circuits. I also turned off the mile notifications on my watch so I didn't know how far away from home I was 👍

I spent the morning running and at the gym (flexible schedule at work right now) and I'm wiped out. I started with my warm-up run, which I did outside today because it was pretty nice out. Per usual I had planned to get out the door earlier so I cut it a bit close to get to strength training. Kind of had to hustle up to finish up my 3 miles and then dash in the door right at the (figurative) bell. My trainer asked me if I had warmed up and I just stared at him because I was definitely super sweaty (it was a little humid even though not too hot) so if I hadn't that would be a bit questionable. Today's workout was pretty much whole body to keep from hitting any one are too much and being sore for long run tomorrow - at least that was the stated goal. I'm not sure that was accomplished.
I decided to stay for yoga after, which was also a bit more challenging than I hoped. Lots of chaturanga and warrior poses today, when I was more up for child's pose and shavasana.
Glad to be home for the day now but trying to gear up to give the dog some exercise yet. Then I think a bath bomb is calling my name.
Have a good Friday evening everyone. Wishing everyone good running and racing this weekend.

Did 3.05 miles today. It was a hot mess. It included a dog that I thought was limping half-way through the run, I then called my husband to pick up the dog because I didn't want her to walk too much, and then when my husband met us by the trial said dog proceeded to easily jump into my husband's car. By the time I finished the rest of the run and got home my husband said that the dog was walking around with no limp and he believes that she was faking it to get out of the run. This is not the first time the dog has done something like this, so I wouldn't be surprised if this is true. We will see how she feels tomorrow, but I've decided that regardless of how much she whimpers and whines I am not taking the dog out anymore on runs. I just realized that I sound like a crazy person.
Hahaha! Dh had a cocker spaniel that faked a limp and whined when she wanted to be babied. We have a pup, half his half my border collie, thankfully she only whines when she wants you to throw the piggy or hot dog.
So funny. Crazy dog. What breed is she? I wanted a running dog, but mine had heart worms and we did a rogue self treatment after the vets plan “killed” one. No heart worms. I think I got lucky and they probably didn’t have them very bad. But, I can’t be sure of remaining heart damage, so I’m reluctant take them out like that. She’d have been a good running pup.
I don't know what type of dog she is I adopted her, but she is supposed to be part flat-coat retriever. She has also faked the need to pee so that I slow down and stop. She loves to walk and hike, but I think what happens is that she gets excited to go when I'm going for a run, but then realizes that she made a mistake and tries to get out of it. But since she's 12 years old I am so conscious of anything that may be wrong with her that I always stop.5 -
Goal is 55 miles this month.
5/1....3.12 miles
5/2...3.09 miles
5/4....13.1 miles (mini-marathon)
5/9....6.63 miles
5/16....4.15 miles.....slow miles, cool weather...nice breeze. Completed after working a 12 hour shift and attending a meeting at work.
Total is 30.09 milesfor the month.
Thanks for all of your support (@kgirlhart, @polska_girl, @shanaber, @workaholic_nurse, @simon_1 , @Scott6255 , @KatieJane83 , @ PastorVincent, @lporter229, and @Elise4270 and anyone else I left out). You all mean so much to me. I love this running support group!
So jealous of @katiejane83 for having gotten to be at the Kentucky Derby and enjoy the festivities. I have been a horse racing fan most of my life and have never gotten to see the race in person. I will bet there was a lively conversation after the disqualification.
@shanaber......Carmel is a city north of Indianapolis, one of the suburbs.....and a very flat but pretty race course. There are not many hills in Indianapolis or surrounding areas.
I have run without music but only because of happenstance, ie. my mp3 player hadn't been charged or, in the case, of the Carmel half, it got so wet from rain water that it stopped working. Running to music is great because I can speed up or slow my gait based on the beat and it is easier to relax when listening to great tunes. If I had to run without music, I could but music plus running really helps with destressing.
My girlfriend who was fired had 3 interviews this week. She was upbeat when I saw her last but also tearful. I am hoping that she finds a situation which she likes better. She certainly didn't deserve to be fired.

Today I got to run 1.34 miles. My calves, hamstrings, and hips all hurt. I couldn't get up the first hill without walking. I was out of breath even at a slow pace. I spent more time stretching and rolling before and after than actually running.
But my knee didn't hurt! A couple of twinges afterward and I definitely was aware of both knees the whole time, but NO PAIN!
I’m hoping for a couple of miles on the way to the gym tomorrow, maybe a couple of miles home, and then 10K on Sunday (assuming we can avoid lightning storms).
Given the slow start, I’m revising my monthly goal to 30 miles and have revised June to keep my weekly increases in the 10-13% per week range. My total mileage will be under what the Higdon plan prescribes, but I should be able to work up to a ten-mile long run by the end of June (which is good since I’ve signed up for a 10 mile race on June 29) and be on track for my half on August 3.
I’m back in the game!

I’m doing a challenge on mapmyrun which has a badge for logging a run at night, and it’s been ridiculously hot, so my husband and I went out for a rare traipse around our neighborhood, where we don’t usually run because it’s not an ideal neighborhood - broken sidewalks, bad traffic, and high crime area. We did a little circuit of the nearby residential street which is like 2.5 miles or something, and the run was uneventful, although I did turn around halfway out the door and swap shoes because my Sauconys have a lower drop which was making my tendon hurt.
But the return home was anything but uneventful! Our two cats were fixated on the bookcase, and under the bookcase was this fella!!!
We have seen him and his momma before, but never in the house! And I have no idea how he got in. Momma was nowhere to be seen. We set him out back where we saw them the other day and are keeping an eye out. Tomorrow we are checking the house over - I know there are holes up under the eaves, and since we just had the AC ductwork replaced I’m suspecting a connection from the attic to the ducts to the interior somewhere. Poor little guy! My husband handled him with gloves but he did nothing but cuddle and make tweedling noises, didn’t even try to bite or get away.13 -

Great weather for a run, it was 23C (75F), overcast and a bit windy. Not much to report, started out a bit stiff (had a party at strength training last night), felt great after 2km, and ran out of steam nearing the end. I'm going to call myself recovered from the race and start getting serious about training.
Upcoming races:
11.17 Shanghai Marathon

We set him out back where we saw them the other day and are keeping an eye out. Tomorrow we are checking the house over - I know there are holes up under the eaves, and since we just had the AC ductwork replaced I’m suspecting a connection from the attic to the ducts to the interior somewhere. Poor little guy! My husband handled him with gloves but he did nothing but cuddle and make tweedling noises, didn’t even try to bite or get away.
Smart with the gloves! I need get me a pair like that.0 -

Today is the day of the half marathon. We are on our second 30 minute weather delay. There is a pretty good thunderstorm overhead right now. Hopefully it will pass and we will be able to run. At least there is a nice building we can wait in.6

Watch out for puddles when you run! They often hid ankle eating holes.1 -
They decided that the weather was not going to get better. The lightning was too close. There was a tornado warning south of us, and they were worried about a few low lying areas where people could fall so no race for me today. 😪 They are giving us a choice of a refund, or of transferring our registration to next year though. And I won a door prize. A $75 gift card to a nice local restaurant.15

@rheddmobile OMG that baby raccoon is so cute. Not that you want him in your house, but he seems like he wouldn't mind hanging out with you. Hope he found his family again and you can keep critters out.
@kgirlhart sorry about your canceled race. Nice door prize though! That would make it worth it.
Ugh, @PastorVincent, 99% humidity already.

We are having an absolutely gorgeous day here today. At the start of our long run it was in the upper 40s, it's now up to low 60s. The humidity is low, the skies are blue, everything else is green (and growing like weeds from all the rain). There was a big group today because of the nice weather, and there was a regatta going on as well so it almost felt like a race day atmosphere. I personally was not having the best running day but it was ok, just felt like it was never going to end. We stopped to regroup with people about 45 minutes in and that took a little too long so the rest felt like kind of a drag after cooling down so much. But we had a nice chance to run with the coach for a while and that kept things going - he can talk forever and has a lot of good stories. I forgot to restart my watch fora few minutes at one point so I'm sure I really did a little over 11 miles. I was hoping to last for 10 so I was pleased to get a little more than that.
I have a race on Tuesday and then a half coming up in 2 weeks, so I'm going to do a little tapering to try to be a little fresher for this one. Tuesday's race I'll just use as my speedwork for the week. Then I leave for a trip to see family later in the week so that's a good time to start tapering anyway.

Haven’t been posting because my job and school have been keeping me busy. I had an initial goal of 50 miles this month. Which, is a lot for me, because I average 2-3 miles per run and the longest I have ever ran is 6 miles.
I’m only at 17 miles so far this month. I was so overwhelmed with the 33 remaining miles that I was going to throw in the towel on the goal. But, I broke it down on a calendar by how many miles I need to run on certain days (and a few long-ish runs thrown in to challenge myself!) and now it doesn’t seem so daunting.
So, just to keep myself accountable, I am going to run 3 miles tonight. I plan to run outside with my dog, but its supposed to thunderstorm, so depending on how severe it is I may end up on the treadmill. Then I might need some positive thoughts sent my way, lol. I hate the treadmill so much, I get so bored and can rarely go more than 2 miles.
But, I’m gonna do it. I have found that saying that I am going to do it, to other people, holds me more accountable and then I feel like I HAVE to.
