I have the ear buds... er yurbuds... I have two pair. One hangs over your ear and lets you hear your surroundings the other are sweet and eliminates surrounding noise. St Jude’s sent them to me for a fancy donation. I can’t run with anything in my ears for very long. Both pair make my ears sore. So, I figure I’m just not meant to run with them. I get distracted anyway and try to dance or wanna fight, depends on what I’m listening too.
They have those Bluetooth ones now. I bet you could use one at an event and it not be a blatant violation or even noticed. Guys at work use one like that. And there are supposed to be some specifically for sports.
ETA I think @garygse tried some out and didn’t like them. I can’t remember specifically why. I do like the concept though.
And
I think I wanna pair now...
"Yurbuds" is not at all what I was talking about Look at the link, these do not go in or over the ear at all. They are bone conducting and leave your ear completely 100% unobstructed.
Oh yes I realized I wasn't clear. I was saying the yurbuds or Bluetooth ear piece ones might be a suitable alternative to the expensive ones. The bone conducting seems cool. But I wonder if the pressure would get irritating.
I wear the bone conduction type and they don't have what I would call "pressure." There is some sound and there is vibration, but not pressure. They do seem to be more difficult with both sunglasses and headphones and a hat. See my profile photo... I was wearing bone conduction headphones, sunglasses, and a hat. And yes, I could hear and was talking to other runners ahead and behind me. Though I sometimes paused the music so I could talk while running without distraction of music.
Hmm, interesting points. I have a child sized head and no hat fits. If I got these bone conducting ones, hats might fit. The sunglasses might be an issue though. It looks like you’re making it work. I’ll put them on the return to running* wish list.
ETA *cycling
Trekz makes a smaller size. My wife is tiny and wears child-sized glasses, and the smaller Trekz stayed on her despite looking a bit big for her. She jumped around even.1 -
So apparently I am living up to my user name when it comes to this forum! I hope everyone is having a nice spring without too much humidity, no injuries, and lots of beautiful weather. I am starting to struggle on certain days with the heat and humidity where I live, but I keep forcing myself to go out there because races don't happen in the air conditioning.
I didn't set a monthly goal for distance this month because I simply forgot to sit down and look at my plan ahead of time, but anything north of 85 miles is good enough for me.

I notice about a 30-45 second difference in my pace when I run outside when it's cool or on the treadmill to when I run outside in the afternoon when it's humid, hot, and sunny. I've been in the south for 4 years now. I just can't seem to get my body to go any faster when it's hot. Does is every get any better or easier?8 -

Had to take advantage of another day with no rain because it's back in the forecast starting tonight. Mid 60s and partly cloudy weather seems pretty good right now, but I could still really go for a nice sunny warm beach. Anyway, met up with some friends for a nice run around the lakes. I haven't done a 5-mile daily run in a while so I was glad to get that much in.5 -

I have the Trekz Titanium and I like them...I just don't really wear them that often as I tend to prefer running in silence overall. The one thing I will say about them is that it's pretty easy, and tempting, to turn them up too loud, which can damage your hearing. You tend to forget that you're supposed to be able to hear everything else, and end up trying to drown it all out, lol.
While I'm here, I may as well give my first update of the month.

wb @garygse !
Back and biceps circuit today, then another heat acclimatization run 5k and change at 11:30/mile pace over lunch.
@Lazy_Bones_85 It gets easier if you train for it...Have been back in the south for 11 years now and still have to do acclimatization runs when the weather heats up. Of course I try all the time to just run the first race in the heat to see if anything has changed !5 -

So, the optimal temperature for running is somewhere around 50-55F (it will vary a bit per person and etc). Anything outside of that will hurt performance. Humidity, dew point, wind and etc are also factors. Simply put you will not run as well in 90F as you will in 55F. I started running while I was still living in the southern US, and I lost a good MINUTE, often more off my pace when the temps AND humidity both crossed 90.
You need to adjust expectations to match the weather and carry on. You will find your speed returns in the fall, and if you trained well, you might even be faster.

So I live in a MAJOR CITY. One of the largest in the US actually. Small next to what is in some countries, but still not exactly rural America. So imagine my surprise when I found GOATS near restaurants and shopping malls:
Turns out they are part of Allegheny Goatscape and being used instead of herbicides and machines to remove invasive plants. Pretty cool!8 -
@PastorVincent funny you should post that as I spent a good portion of my day at a weed meeting. Goats were definately mentioned.
Winter is back. I think we are on #8. Not really sure anymore. Also, donated blood today, so wanted something pretty low key. So, I cut my run interval lengths back down, and got 2.7 miles in.
2.7 today = 35.9/503 -

I tried Nuun for the first time during a 15K I ran in February. I'd never heard of it before. Well the Nuun was like an Alka Seltzer tablet and it wasn't fully dissolved with I picked it up. Plus it was light yellow and in my rush to grab a beverage, I was prepared for water, not this fizzy stuff. My stomach gurgled for a good two miles after that. I was like WHAT IS WRONG WITH GATORADE? Thought I was going to barf right then and there.1 -

I looked it up and they have swapped formulas twice - in 2016 they swapped from sorbitol to stevia plus monk fruit and dextrose. And in January 2019 they swapped to just stevia plus dextrose and rice. Since one of my reasons for preferring nuun to other sports drinks is the low carbs I was concerned when I read about the rice, but supposedly the new formula contains only 2 carbs instead of 4. However for some reason the calories have gone from 10 to 15, which makes me curious about what else they added.
Also the new formula contains more potassium. Supposedly the new combo with rice and more potassium is absorbed quicker. The reasoning behind eliminating the monk fruit is that it’s now certified GMO free - I guess monk fruit is a GMO?
Regardless the old stuff worked for me and I’m not looking forward to test driving some experimental stuff.1 -
@Lazy_Bones_85 I lose at least a minute per mile in the summer in Memphis. Gonna try running with an ice vest later this year and see if it helps any.
Speaking of which, it was 96 when I ran today! Bleah! And also, I ran today! Yay! First time completing 5k at a run since my injury. I am slow - just under 32 minutes - but glad to be back in the game at all. And part of how slow I was, was not being heat-adjusted yet. I’m happy that I felt like my ankle would have let me run faster if I could have handled the heat, instead of feeling like I really wanted to run faster but my leg wouldn’t let me.

I’m glad for this Nuun discussion—I accidentally picked some up 12+ miles into my HM and promptly moved to the side to spit it out (it was poured into the white water cup not the blue Nuun cup, and I wasn’t tolerating surprises well at that moment!) I taste tested some at the post-race party though, and it didn’t seem too bad, so picked up some and brought it along on my hot bike ride with my son last Saturday. Neither of us were fans. Good to know that’s not too uncommon!
Last night I did some hill sprints for the first time, which was fun and challenging. I can see how they should help in lots of ways. It’s been a little cool and soggy here—I’ll be happy when it gets more summery again, though I know we need the rain.

@Lazy_Bones_85 - Here are a couple of articles about the affects of heat and humidity on running.

@hanlonsk - they use goats a lot in the PNW to get rid of weeds and invasive plants. In CA they use them in areas that are difficult to get into clear out brush from fire prone areas.3 -

Yes! I had a similar experience as @PastorVincent last summer in Seattle. I believe this crew is called “Rent-a-goat”

Just to continue with the goat discussion, the local council came up with a scheme here a few years ago (after the worst forest fire in ages which pretty much nuked the entire mountain) to pay shepherds to take their sheep up the mountain to clear undergrowth as a preventative measure.4

I do the out and back method of running, so run half the planned distance, turn around and run back. and fortunately on my current path I have several turn around points, so like this morning I planned on 5k, but when I got to my turn around point my legs kept going to the 6k turn around point, no idea how that happened. so I did 6k this morning. As others have said, once I'm that far, no way I'm walking home, too boring for that!
Was looking at the information for my July HM, and it turns out they are really really strict on the No Earphones rules (seriously? why!!). So what do you do when you cant wear earphones? Is this a common thing? I'm guessing its because the run is happening on rural roads with high speed limits. but most of us are sensible to have our volume turned down. Do I just need to embrace the suck and do a few runs without music? I hate listening to myself breathe lol. Or should I be *that* runner who plays music on my phone...
Oh and slightly amusing story, there is a guy who always runs the same route as me, but in the opposite direction, so we often cross paths. he never talks, never says hi to me, smiles, nods or anything. its like I'm not there. Ok dude, that's fine, happy being like that. Though he always says hi to my neighbour who is often sitting on his deck in the morning in summer. Well this morning I pass him just as I was about to turn, so I ended up following him for a bit then passing him! I was really self conscious about this, I made a point of sticking to my usual pace, and I left him in the dust. Its awkward seeing someone running every day and they never say hi so passing him like that was just weird.
On the headphones: It's weird, I almost always train with podcasts in my ears (earbuds in one ear only, or now the aftershokz (or however it's spelled) bone-conducting headphones, so I can still hear), but don't typically race with it. If I'm focused or have people around me, music/podcasts annoy me. I sometimes put music in for a longer race like 10k+, but not necessarily. Last weekend I ran the whole marathon with the aftershokz off and around my neck because I didn't feel like getting the phone out to turn anything on. They look stupid in the few pictures I was in, and I dumped so much water on my head, I was sure they'd be ruined, but I think they're fine. I had them if I needed them. I talked to people a little bit, paid attention to what was going on around me, focused on staying on pace, and contemplated how everyone around me has had the advantage of significantly higher testosterone throughout their entire lifetime, and none have ever given birth (let alone twice) and here I was holding my own right alongside them... and then the pacer's balloon hit me in the face and I moved on to other thoughts.
On greeting other runners, I'd start giving him a little runner's wave/nod, and just be entertained if he keeps ignoring you Some people are just like that.7 -

Honestly? I tend to not acknowledge other runners either. I hide behind my 92% light blocking sunglass and just push on by. This goes for triple if the other runner is a female. I notice them and track their progress until they are sufficiently far away to no longer be of interest, but talk to them? Say hi? No. I will change my route before I do that.
I do try not to be rude though so I will sometimes wave back if they wave first. I do see several of the same people when I run down in the city every time and most of them I have never acknowledged, nor have they acknowledged me.
In a race, I am slightly more social. But only slightly. I am INTJ after all3 -
I should rent a goat to take care of the weeds in my yard.
Also, I've been meaning to try the Aftershokz too. A friend has some she is looking to sell and was willing to let me try them out first so I should follow up on that. I do hate anything additional I need to charge though so I'm a little hesitant. I hate the wires of my old school earbuds but at least they are always ready to go.2 -

I can speculate for one of them. She was a kid, maybe 8 or 9 years old, running with her mom. Mom was ahead of her a little ways and she rang the bell to get her attention so they could slow down/walk. I didn't mind that so much and thought it was actually a pretty good idea.
The 40+ year old man running alone with one? I didn't ask. I figured he was one of the 40,000 other people there who had lost their mind and was trying to have fun. He did look like he was having fun. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯9
