I have the ear buds... er yurbuds... I have two pair. One hangs over your ear and lets you hear your surroundings the other are sweet and eliminates surrounding noise. St Jude’s sent them to me for a fancy donation. I can’t run with anything in my ears for very long. Both pair make my ears sore. So, I figure I’m just not meant to run with them. I get distracted anyway and try to dance or wanna fight, depends on what I’m listening too.
They have those Bluetooth ones now. I bet you could use one at an event and it not be a blatant violation or even noticed. Guys at work use one like that. And there are supposed to be some specifically for sports.
ETA I think @garygse tried some out and didn’t like them. I can’t remember specifically why. I do like the concept though.
And
I think I wanna pair now...3 -
Ha. Love this. It took nine days to get a package from the South Island to here (about 500km or a 1:20 direct flight), and only four days for my new shoes to get to me from Tucson (around 11,000km and, from memory, about 12 hours-plus flying plus a plane change). But hey, new shoes! Bought two because end of line and economies of scale regarding postage. One pretty, one plain. Mostly so I can tell them apart. Pretty ones cost $20 more.

6 km Wednesday Club Run. The group was doing 5km but I made a detour to add in another km.
One of the young ladies who joined us in November has had a real break out this spring.
Last fall she was 7:30/km and could only do 4km using the Galloway 2k run - 200m walk - 2k run.
She still does the walk-run but 2k run 100m walk and can knock off 15km on consecutive days with out crashing.
Some days she does whine but still push's through, we joke that she is our Drama Queen and then she goes into a full on Drama Show for us - until she breaks out in the giggles. Tonight being a short run ( the group she was in did 5km ) she dropped the hammer (5:22/km) and just slowly pulled away from us - even going up hill so we actually were all cheering her on ( inside voice ). We keep telling her she should join one of the other mini-groups in our club as she is now faster than our little group. Also she lost a Toe Nail last week so is Officially a Bad@$$ Runner now.
We also had 2 young ladies doing their University Summer Practicum who have joined in so the one lady who has been here for 5 years finally has some company in her age demographic who also happen to be darn good athletes - they ripped off a 4:30/km for 15 km tonight. Ah the speed of youth.
05/01 22.00 km - 22.00km -118.00km - YTD 301.90km
05/04 10.00 km - 32.00km -108.00km - YTD 311.90km

05/11 12.00 km - 49.00km -091.00km - YTD 328.90km
05/12 7.50 km - 56.50km - 83.50km - YTD 336.40km
05/13 10.50 km - 67.00km - 73.00km - YTD 346.90km
05/15 6.00 km - 73.00km - 67.00km - YTD 352.90kmQuestion for you all..
How did you build up distance? Particularly when running on your own I.e. non race days
@tess453 What really helped me was joining the Local Running Club. Check FB, local Running Shoe Store, Gym, Sports club etc for a local club. Being runners they understand the phases we all go through as runners so are not judgemental when you have a crash and burn type day. Most clubs have multiple pace groups so you just find the one that fits your speed and let them know you have been struggling building distance. Run slower to run longer and then work on speed after you get past your goal distance.
Most runners seem to have a natural easy pace where they can burn up km after km without crashing and without a conscious effort , find that pace. If I let myself float along after a while I drop into a 6:10-6:25/km pace that I can hold for hours. It's when I push the pace down below 5:45/km that I can burn out in a hurry.
Also you could take a program like Hal Higdon 10km race training where it slowly builds up the distance - having a program/schedule works for some people.4 -
Question for the group:
What running magazine(s) do you subscribe to or read?
I used to have Runner's World but I don't like the changes they have made and that I can't access online articles any longer without a different, separate 'online subscription'.
Like @Scott6255 and @PastorVincent I just read them on-line. When I buy a magazine I usually forget about it and then find it when I'm doing an office purge. My favorites Trail Runner and Canadian Running plus an honourable mention to MEC0 -

I have been with a running club before but then I started agility with the dog and the times clashed. It was good initially but as it's close to home they run the same routes so was starting to get boring. But I'd be willing to drive so maybe need to find another group elsewhere to freshen things up. My old sub group would often tell me we were going out for 5km but slip in some extra!0 -
I’ve begun to embrace the no headphones run, well no music anyway. My headphones died one mile into a seven mile run recently and I just had to deal with it, turned out I didn’t mind it. I kind of liked that I stayed my pace better without the speed bump that came with my favorite song coming on. I wouldn’t say I’m a convert yet but ever since I have been trying to run a bit with the headphones in and no music.
On tap these days at Casa De Ice we have
The tour of Belgium
Raspberry Wit Beer- “Berry White” (5.2%) A cool refreshing summer beer for those who like fruit in their beer and a low ABV. A less than traditional spin on Wit beer but fun none the less and it’s pink! (Originally brewed for breast cancer awareness month)
Belgian Dubbel- “Double Dragon” (8.3%) Named after its red-brownish color, its residual spice taste, and its alcohol content this malty beast is perfect for a summer night on the porch with your buddies when nobody is planning on driving home. The smooth malt and medium body makes this dangerously easy to drink.
Belgian Blond- “Ellaine” (7.2%) Named after a traditional Belgian girls name meaning “shining light” this beer is light and crisp yet sweet, great for hanging by your preferred body of water taking in the sun. That line sounds nice but 7.2% ABV is no joke stay in the shade lol.

Interesting study. Personally, I find the dreadmill WAY harder than outside.
Is Running on a Treadmill Harder or Easier Than Running Outside?
New research debunks some persistent ’mill myths.

That is interesting, I hate a treadmill run. I tried it not too long ago much slower than I would run outside and was gassed so quickly I ended up just hopping off and finishing the run outdoors.0 -

Thank you to everyone who passed along congrats! I really feel great off that PR.

Miles until Goal # 1 - 54.55 miles
Miles until Goal # 2 - 64.55 miles
At this rate, I'll barely get 100 miles this month. It's like I PR'd my half and lost a bunch of motivation. UGH.

Miles until Goal # 2 - 61.21 miles3 -
@ContraryMaryMary Your experience is why so many events ban the use of headphones - especially if you are doing any trails in the bush, mountains, extreme rough terrain where you need to be able to hear other contestants or secondary hazards. I know of events where the marshall's give you the option of turning in your headphones or your bib = DQ. If you can't hear the marshall and other runners you are a hazard at the event. It's one thing to be out for an easy recreational run with no crowds using headphones, bad to be in an event with a crowded field of runners and ignoring the etiquette of being aware of other athlete's and keep right unless passing.zeesparrow wrote: »However, there were more than a couple people running with cowbells during the 12k. Cowbells - were they afraid of bears? I feel the same way about Bear Bells.
By the way Bear Bells are a Great Marketing Gimmick - there a waste of money - all they do is let the bear know where a free lunch is.3 -

Oh yes I realized I wasn't clear. I was saying the yurbuds or Bluetooth ear piece ones might be a suitable alternative to the expensive ones. The bone conducting seems cool. But I wonder if the pressure would get irritating.0 -

I only wore them for like 5 mins at most in the expo do not sure. My wife needs hearing aids so bone conduction is a great option for her as it bypasses her eardrum. So probably at least one set in my future. At $100 USD a pair though might be a while.0 -

I have never done anything like this before... Weights need to be my endormorphic thing, but I've got a 1 year old husky to keep energy in check for.. I didn't set a goal as I just got here today.. and some of my runs are intervals... but today, May16/19 - without being OVER retroactive.. lets say I started on Monday.
I have done 5KMs this week. (1.5 tuesday and wednesday) and 2 today (roughly. ) I will need to clock this properly... I'm just trying to be accountable and start talking to people who are like minded and motivating!!!5 -
May goal:40 (stretch goal 50)
May Miles: 23.97
5/5 - 7.55 Bloomsday (12k race) - official time: 1:32:51
5/8 - 2.3
5/9 - 2.42
5/10 - 2.24
5/13 - 1.3
5/14 - 3.12 (ST)
5/15 - 2.03
5/16 - 3.01 (90s plank done, ST tonight)
We have rain in the forecast with flash flood warnings - but it hasn't started yet. This morning was surreal; there was very little traffic, the birds were singing, the skies were blue and the weather absolutely perfect. About halfway through my run, I realized I wasn't paying attention to every little movement I made. I wasn't focused on my cadence, what my feet were/weren't doing, my breathing, my arm swings... nothing! My form wasn't perfect but it wasn't completely falling apart, either. My HR was nice and steady and I was just enjoying the run. A mile later, things weren't quite as smooth. It was nice while it lasted.
I have been chatting with one of my coworkers about running for a while now. He included me in a conversation yesterday with another coworker. She's running a marathon this weekend, just joined a "plank challenge" and was wondering if we'd like to do that with her. Um... no. I mean, sure! I think she's doing it every day, but we're not committing to that. For now, I'm going to do that 2-3x per week. I started this morning and surprised myself, as I expected to only be able to last a minute. ST scheduled for tonight.5 -
@tess453 To keep from getting bored I mostly focus on how much time I have to run and not how far I want to go. So if I have 30 minutes to run I run out for 15 minutes and then head back, or 1 hour I run out for 30 minutes and then back. I find that as my running improves I can run farther distances in the same amount of time without seeming to try. I also will sometimes just run to a certain place and back. I may run out to the golf course, or past all the elementary schools or past my office and back or whatever random spot I choose. I also like to play Zombie's run too.
@Eddie_Ice My go to meal after a long run is homemade pan pizza. And during the Easter season I would usually have a Reese's peanut butter egg while waiting on the pizza.
@Avidkeo I use headphones while running, but I always just use one earbud and I don't turn it up too loud. So far all of the races I have done have either not mentioned headphones, or had a one earbud only policy. But I think in a race situation I would be ok with no headphones. A lot of the time I zone out and don't even really hear the music. But I like to have it when I start feeling like I'm slowing down. I did run a race once where a woman was near me for quite some time with her music playing. I thought it was really obnoxious. I could hear her music over mine (since I had mine turned low and only in one ear). Plus I didn't care for her taste in music.
Two days until my HM. Right now the forecast is 67F with a 60-65% chance of thunderstorms. I'll be ok with rain, but I sure hope it isn't stormy.7 -
Well, it's been 13 days since my last run, and I'm starting to get nervous about my race this weekend. Although my hips have been pain free since my PT appointment on Friday, I'm still getting daily twinges from my right knee (the OG problem child). I'd be willing to give it a go with the stretches and rolling the PT prescribed, except for the part where I got hit by a nasty cold on Saturday and am still fighting it off. If by fighting you mean attempting to stick to a normal schedule, getting completely exhausted walking up and down the stairs between my kitchen, bedroom, and office, and then skipping my workout so I can sleep through the middle of the day. Sigh.
I know that this too shall pass, but I really, really do not want to DNS on Sunday. It's a 10K and I haven't run more than five miles since February, which isn't awesome, especially since the PT recommended easing back into running gradually. I don't think she meant "sit in bed for a week then run your longest distance in three months".
Well, there is literally nothing I can do about it right now other than rest and see how I feel this weekend - no refunds or deferrals available. Either I feel up for it or I don't. The world will go on.6 -

I would suggest you go for a short easy run the day or two before the race. I find that if I do not do that I am much stiffer at the race start and it makes the race seem harder than it should be.3 -
Remember my unknown stomach issue in the marathon? FLIPPEN NUUN CHANGED their formula at some point and has STEVIA IN IT instead of sorbitol like it used to!
Stevia is in the ragweed family and I am allergic to it because of that

I think I wanna pair now...
"Yurbuds" is not at all what I was talking about Look at the link, these do not go in or over the ear at all. They are bone conducting and leave your ear completely 100% unobstructed.
Oh yes I realized I wasn't clear. I was saying the yurbuds or Bluetooth ear piece ones might be a suitable alternative to the expensive ones. The bone conducting seems cool. But I wonder if the pressure would get irritating.
I wear the bone conduction type and they don't have what I would call "pressure." There is some sound and there is vibration, but not pressure. They do seem to be more difficult with both sunglasses and headphones and a hat. See my profile photo... I was wearing bone conduction headphones, sunglasses, and a hat. And yes, I could hear and was talking to other runners ahead and behind me. Though I sometimes paused the music so I could talk while running without distraction of music.1 -

Wow, that sucks! But amazing that you found the cause and now can find an alternative.0 -

@tess453 - You are the 1st person I have 'met' here who also does agility with their dog! What kind of dog do you have and do you go to agility trials? My profile picture is of my pup at a recent trial.
@zeesparrow - aren't runs like that just the best!?!
@Elise4270 - I used to love my Yurbuds but the newer ones I bought to replace my old pair that stopped working, hurt my ears as well. I don't know it they changed the size or shape or what. I even trie using the bud covers from my old pair thinking that was the issue, nope.PastorVincent wrote: »Remember my unknown stomach issue in the marathon? @PastorVincent - you might take a look at Skratch Labs - they don't have Stevia or sorbitol in their energy/recovery drinks or chews. Sorbitol upsets my stomach so I couldn't use NUUN before and I am not a fan of Stevia and depending on the Stevia product it is also often blended with other types of sugar alcohols.
Welcome @csilverthorn22! Many of us here have done or still do intervals. You can count any or all of it toward your goal - it is your goal and we aren't picky!
No running for me to day - it is a cross train day today anyways but I really was hurting last night. I guess in my little recovery run I pushed too hard. I have never felt like this after a race and have always been able to come right back and do a slow recovery run or two and then get right back into my normal running schedule. I guess it was the race course and my level of prep? Who knows, I am just not quite ready to write it off to getting older... I will see how I feel in the morning if I want to try again or just get out for a walk. It is supposed to be beautiful after rain and winds today.2 -

99% of the time I drink Propel Zero if I drink anything - but only for hydration. I use Clif Blocks if the run is going to be long enough to need fuel. I have completed more than one Marathon+ distance with that combo so I know it is good enough. Propel Zero is cheap and in every major grocery store that I have been in so that is a big bonus over things like Nuun and others that I would have to constantly order.
I do not actually know what is in Propel Zero, I started using it before my food issues set in - over a decade ago. I should look into that. On second thought I probably do not want to know.
ETA- OH The only recovery drink I use is REAL CHOCOLATE MILK. Cause its chocolate. Enough said.6 -
Set out for an easy 6 miles during lunch which of course is why after checking my watch and seeing I ran 8... I was half an hour late getting back. OPS

Yesterday, I did 6.70 miles around town. They were slow, I felt weak, and I cut it short again compared to the 9 miles I had planned.
I had a run on the schedule tonight, but I'm tired and it is suddenly hot (92F) outside. I'm going to skip despite that my first 2 runs this week were short because they sucked. Being tired maybe is an indication that I should prioritize catching up on sleep.5 -
I started running outside again. I was going to wait until next month but figured why not start now.

They are not always on (well almost always when I am running alone, but I often have them on and just calling pace in a big race), but there are in place to call outpace regardless. I am thinking about getting the Trekz headphones that do not go in your ear at all but use bone conducting. I tired them at the Expo this year and they actually work very well. You can both clearly hear and still have full awareness of noises around you.

Just do not have the cash right now.

Hmm, interesting points. I have a child sized head and no hat fits. If I got these bone conducting ones, hats might fit. The sunglasses might be an issue though. It looks like you’re making it work. I’ll put them on the return to running* wish list.
