Ran Wisconsin Half Marathon yesterday and PR'd by over 2 minutes. Two HUGE PR's for me in 2 weeks. Old time was 2:04:02 and time yesterday was 2:01:53. And considering before April 20, I hadn't PR'd anything in 4 years. THIS IS MY YEAR!!!

Thank you to everyone who passed along congrats! I really feel great off that PR.

Kristi aka Mrs. PastorVincent does not really do internet forums like this. She does drop in the FB group that is attached to this group occasionally though. Everyone over there loves her of course cause, well, cause she is great.

Cloudy and cool this morning, with a little drizzle to keep me comfortable. Back was a little tight after yesterday's golf, but loosened up after 2k. Upped the pace from slow to easy with no apparent ill effects. Think I'll try a longer run tomorrow.

First time I've run 3 days in a row. Glad for a rest day tomorrow.

5/9....6.63 miles (Monon trail)......very slow miles at 14 minute miles except for the last 2 which were more up-tempo due to having to go to the bathroom.

Still some soreness after running a half marathon. The weather was warm and humid. Finally a cool breeze after running 2 miles. My legs felt heavy--- like logs. I will be focused on running with more consistency and greater distances at a more controlled pace.

2019 Mini-marathon race report.

The Mini-marathon is a huge event in Indy, which signals the start of almost a whole month of festivities that terminates with the Indy 500 at Speedway. It is becoming a larger and larger event. I noted when I was at the Expo a banner with all of the runners, whose names were in teeny-tiny print, and I couldn't find my name, despite being at the end of the alphabet.

There was no line to meet Frank Shorter, which was surprising to me. He won the 1972 Olympics marathon and I believe was close to winning in 1976. I was a kid when these Olympics were being run...but I loved hearing about how much work was involved and how much sacrifice these athletes endure to have their one big moment on the world stage. It was exciting to meet him and he autographed my racing bib.

The day of the race was rainy. I knew that it was going to be raining at the start of the race but thought that I would have an hour of dry weather. Alas, it was not to be. In the past, I would never run in the rain, but this year, I have a different mindset and have decided that the weather was not going to interfere with my running plans.

My goal was to finish under 2:57 which was the time I finished at the Carmel half-marathon in March, which was also run in the rain.

At the start, I was in the middle of a wall of people. My goal at the start was to not get stepped on nor to step on anyone else. I wanted to run each mile under 13 minutes and believed that I could finish strongly at the end, despite the crowd of people participating.

At the first mile, I clocked it at 12 minutes. 12 minutes? I hadn't run that fast in a long time. So I decided to try to keep my pace at 12 minutes or at least under 13 minutes.

It was still very crowded, and the rain was not hard, but steady. I decided not to drink anything until mile 8 because I had trained without eating or drinking water and knew that I really didn't need anything. I had a hearty meal of peanut butter on toast and a yogurt. My mp3 player had plenty of battery life. Shortly after mile 2, the song, "Cry me a river" played.....I had to laugh.

My pace was pretty steady...12:14 miles, 12:30 etc. I was running toward the Indy 500 speedway track, which is 2.5 miles in circumference and the most boring part of the race. After mile 6, there is an area called the Gold Mile, which is dedicated to our fallen veterans. Posted were pictures of there faces and ages.....so young I thought to die....many in their 20's and 30's....men and women....very sobering. I was close to tears. It was still raining...so no one would notice.

The track is flat but graded and my pace was pretty steady as I left Speedway. I was still running 12:14, 12:20 miles until mile 9. My strategy was to sprint every 0.1 mile until 5 long breaths passed and then slow to up tempo. By mile 9, fatigue was setting in and I ran that mile in 14 minutes. I was soaked to the bone, not able to avoid stepping in huge puddles and noted that my clothes added extra weight. After mile 9 was completed, I was determined to pick up the pace. I was still surrounded by a lot of people, who were at this point, walking most of the time. When I saw a window of opening, I sprinted to it. After mile 10, I started accepting the cups of water and one sports gel that was being passed to the runners. I was able to run a little faster but not the 12 minute miles that I had run at the beginning.

I was so excited to see the checked flag which meant only 0.1 mile to run. I finished in 2:47:48, which was nearly 10 minutes faster than the race I ran in Carmel one month ago. It was a much tougher race due to the crowd (more than 17, 000 in the half marathon), and the steady unrelenting rain.

Very late to this month's challenge but i have been getting out there. 4 miles today and that's the last run before my half marathon on Sunday, few niggles in my knee but not bad. Can't believe it's come round so fast! The weather has been pretty bad here, on Wednesday it was pouring all day and 8 degrees. Enjoy it, trust your training, after you finish make sure you walk for a while and STRETCH!!!!!

This is a big thing that novice racers get wrong to their peril. After a race, you need a cool down period. If you stop and sit you are likely to pass out. Drink good liquids, eat something when your stomach is ready, walk a while. Stretching like @eleanorhawkins will help prevent DOMS too. The important thing it to focus on coming down for a slow gentle landing after the race, and not crashing hard.
