Just a short run in the neighborhood trying to get out between thunderstorms. I got pretty hot and muggy today so I was trying to wait it out before running, plus get some yard work done before the rain. We had a brief storm and then I headed out, having been assured by the minute by minute forecast that it was all clear for a while. It felt a lot cooler, but the forecast was a lie and I did get rained on - felt pretty good, really. I still cut it shorter than I originally intended because my legs felt pretty tired and I'd like to rest up a bit before Tuesday's race.

Today I got to run 3.25 miles at the Twin Cities in Motion Women Run the Cities 5K. I am incredibly glad that I was able to run. It was unseasonably cold, but it turns out that training outdoor in (nearly) any condition pays off. There was a little concern about lightening but nothing materialized.
One point where the weather was in my favor - all participants were told they could opt to run a shorter distance than registered for without any transfer fee or other administrative hassle. I had signed up for the 10k but was concerned about being able to do that distance on only my second run since getting my knee and hip situation sorted out, not to mention a solid week with a cold.
The 5K isn’t my favorite distance but it was the right distance for today. The first mile I took it fairly easy, then after the turnaround I took off my jacket and opened up a bit. Everything felt good except my eternally cold butt - with everything else that’s been going on I’ve completely forgotten to try the hand warmers I bought at REI ages ago.
My chip time was 0:33:02, which was neither a PB nor a PW. My husband pointed out that it was my fastest 5k run in the rain, so I’ll take it.
Per usual, we skipped out on the (very soggy) festivities and I went home for a quick shower before heading out for brunch. I had intended to work today but decided that I needed a catch-up day more, so I took a nap and now I’m doing All The Laundry.
Swag photos under cut.
It was a little damp.
I really like this shirt, so I wore it to post-race brunch!
Updated my swag shelf!

Today I decided to run my half marathon. I didn't get to do it yesterday, so I did it today by myself. They run this race every year on Armed Forces Day and last year it was on the 19th, so today was actually the anniversary of the first time I ran 13.1 miles which I thought was kind of cool. Yesterday at the race the director told everyone to go ahead and take a finisher medal. They were custom made and looked like dog tags and had the date imprinted on them. I think he just couldn't bear to take them all home since he can't use them next year like he can the age group awards. Running the half today made me feel a little better about hanging the medal. I didn't "race" my run today, but I still finished it faster than I did last year on May 19th when I ran my first half. It wasn't as fast as my half in February, but I expected that. Between the warmer temperatures and the lack of race adrenaline I wasn't expecting a PR. It was my 2nd fastest half though so definite improvement. I played Zombie's run today and I finished the episode about halfway through the run. I sort of forgot it was still running. My last few miles were pretty slow and as I was coming in toward home I was thinking that it was pretty hard not having the finish line looming and people cheering for me as I came in. Suddenly I heard "Warning: Zombie's detected", so I was able to put on a little bit of a burst of speed at the end after all.

@rheddmobile aww sorry the second racoon baby didn't make it. But glad to hear the little home-invader is old enough to fend for himself. Poor fella, must be lonely. Hopefully he'll take up with another family. I saw a video once about a guy that regularly encouraged raccoons to come up and fed them nearly out of his hand. I guess I never realized that they were so social.2

I got one short run in while on vacation. The Philippines is not very runner friendly (at least the part I was in). There are no side walks and the street is just not an option with all the traffic. I ran around the small gated neighborhood we were staying in. Each loop was less than 0.25 mile. I felt like I was doing @AlphaHowls crazy laps. I got up at sunrise (5am) to get out at the coolest part of the day. It didn't take long for the sun to transform a semi-pleasant temp into a sauna with the most insane humidity!! But, I did it and I'm glad I did. I was feeling antsy and really enjoyed the brief run.
I came home last night. Got a good night's sleep and actually feel pretty good today. But adjusting 13 hrs doesn't happen overnight, so I made sure to go out for my Sunday usual 3 miles to help get back on schedule and hopefully be able to sleep tonight.

So we were really waffling about whether or not to do this bike ride today, but we ended up going for it—it’s just such a gorgeous canyon, and I’m so glad we made it there. Unfortunately it was impossible to get the rest of the family moving at any reasonable time, and the ride was 2 hours away, so we only got to do a little over 23 of the 35 miles and then we got swept up. It was ok in the end—at 10 my son was definitely the youngest rider we saw all day, and he didn’t mind getting a lift over some hills. So starting almost 3 hours after the ride started did have a down side, but we all had a really great time. And I’m so proud of my little guy—he has ridden further in a single day before (maybe 30 miles?), but never with any hills to speak of.
Then I ran a nice easy 4 miles when we got back home. I probably wouldn’t have if we had done the whole ride, but I had some extra energy to burn. It was nice—good temperature, dry, lots of flowers.. legs were a bit fatigued, but not too bad. I’m still toying with the idea of a sprint triathlon in July, so taking opportunities to bike then run to see how that goes..

For those who are curious but don't want to click the link, it's a 16km run on Saturday morning, 5.1km run on Saturday afternoon, and 21.1km half marathon on Sunday morning. Run all three races to complete a full off-road marathon in three stages over two days.
Awwww man, I'm moving the week of the 15th June so won't be here! Otherwise damn that looks cool!!
There's a half in New Plymouth on the 14th July - you should come to the Naki for it!1 -
4.5k run this morning and actually feel a lot less stressed today. We finally signed up with the real estate agent, so I think letting it all go has helped. So far no overwhelming cravings for chocolate biscuits (cookies?). Feeling much better!

I am home from my vacation in Napa where it rained almost the entire time. I hope to catch up with the 321 missed posts over lunch. I have very little to report on the running front. Other than the Flying Pig half, I have done almost no running since Boston. I snuck in a mile run in Napa to check out the town, but that was all I was able to do. We returned home yesterday and I felt like I needed to run. I did 4 easy miles that felt way harder than they should have. Now I am remembering the price of taking an extended down time. I am really looking forward to getting back in "fit" mode as I feel like a sloth. Plyo class tonight. Several strength sessions and easy runs planned for the remainder of the week. And lots of yoga. Happy Monday everyone...hope you all had a great weekend!10

Yay!! They just announced the big fall race for Pittsburgh which is normally on a Sunday will be on Saturday this year. So that means I can race it and go for a PR for that distance since I have not run an official race of that length in years. It will be interesting to see how I compare.10

Okay, found my last 10 mile race. Was 9/2014! So that is the time to be and man, its gonna be tough.
Not sure if I can beat that. But now I have a target at least

11.04 km with Karen K.
From Java Cafe - Up Pats Creek and then took the Bush Trails back to the front face of 12ft davis Hill - straight over the edge and steeply back downhill to the base of Pats Creek Road. A Mini Training Run for Karen as she is doing Canadian Death Race Leg1. of course the best part - Coffee after the run. A nice surprise our old running friend Andrea made the 3 hr drive to join up and run with the fast group.
Sunday May 19
6.91 km Friendship trail with the Sunday Crew.
After the Hill Climb and Bush Trails yesterday my legs were heavy for the first 2 km. Took an alternate route on the return leg down a recently cut Water Pipeline Right of way. So much fun. After catching up to the crew and with 500m left I ran up on one of the Ladies who joined in December and has had great gains but just doesn't believe in her self yet. Got on her shoulder and said Lets Go Come on Lets Go - then added hard to the corner Stop Sign to give her a target to focus on and started accelerating, she bit and picked her pace up, pulled her down to a 4:07/km for 300m - it wasn't far but it was an exercise in confidence building for her to see that she has more speed and ability than she realizes. It was kinda fun to see the smile on her face when I told her what pace my watch was showing.

After each day/run it was a quick trip home and then over to a friends house to help replace the shingles on the roof of his house and detached garage. Started on the un-heated wood shed attached to the garage as it was a good place for them to learn the tricks of the work where if something wasn't perfect it didn't matter as it was just a 3 walled shed for keeping the wood out of the rain. I became the Measure and Cut person for all the end pieces as they were struggling with them to keep a straight finished look. Ran home and grabbed some of my tools and made a cutting board / guide with the 3 most common cuts pre-marked. Made it easy for anyone to cut once they realized the standard pattern I established. After all the kneeling and standing on a pitched roof my calves and glutes are rather tender/tight today. All done and saved them close to $5,000.00 based on the average of the quotes they received.14 -
I let my legs rest Friday and knew I would not be getting in a long run on Saturday. Went out on Saturday though and ended up mostly walking again. Rest and lots of foam rolling on Sunday so I head out this morning hopeful to get a decent run in. It started out terrible with my right leg (quads and glute) hurting and complaining. I still did some very slow run intervals and kept my recovery walks longer than normal. Stretched when I got to the trail and things finally started to loosen up a bit more where I felt like I was actually running and not just shuffling my feet. The 2nd part of the run felt pretty darn good and I felt good when I got home. Have foam rolled, stretched and done some glute, hamstring and quad strengthening that I have not been able to even consider doing since the race. Yay!
I also set up an agility course in the back yard and worked with Hobbes on my off/rest days, otherwise he just goes crazy from the inactivity. It was fun to see him get so excited and go zooming around the yard and through the tunnel. We have a trial starting on Thursday so no running over the weekend until Sunday when hopefully I will be able to get in a long run. Otherwise I will not have even a chance to make goal - sorry 100 Mile Club! How are the rest of you doing?

I traveled Friday & Saturday and am now jet-lagged and there are rolling hills no matter which way I go. Because of that, and the fact that I'm in marathon recovery mode, I took it easy and did 5k yesterday, then the same route in reverse today. There are springs for water breaks along the way, cows staring at me, and the road has a definite pitch to it. I tried to keep it slow and took walk breaks yesterday, then today I ran to 5k and then stopped the watch, splashed spring water on my face, and walked the big hill home. I'm feeling slow and have some sore muscles from riding to church (twice) and on a short group ride on an uncomfortable motorcycle seat yesterday. But it's good to be in the same place as my husband again (he was away for work for the past 3 months). We're in the States for the summer. I decided against the 50k race in June but got signed up for a local 10k on the same day by my sister, so should be fun
I think I'd like to maintain at a slightly higher than HM level going forward, but for now I'm just going to take it slow getting back into it and give my body the rest/recovery it seems to need right now.12 -

So I ended up walking a good portion of it, and thankfully I wore my older running shoes, as it has been raining a lot here. Still, I ended up enjoying it! So different than road running. Kinda tossing about the idea of starting to more of that. So, what basic, beginning tips are there for out of shape, non-elite beginning trail runners?
And my May goal? Run. Nothing more specific, just run.
My number 1 tip: Embrace the mud. Trail running is fun and in many ways it’s less competitive than road running - no two trails are alike. Times are invariably slower and it is perfectly ok to walk the hills (the steep ones especially). Trail shoes make a significant difference in the wet. Enjoy!
Yep. Listen to @ContraryMaryMary she be saying much wisdom!
@dreamer12151 Welcome to the Wacky World of Trail Running
Yes Embrace the Mud, Through it NO TIP TOEING around it.
Eventually if you get really hooked you will have to look at some Trail Shoes with their deeper lugs for grabbing onto the dirt/rock/mud and hanging on to prevent slip and fall injuries. We have a local trail where the one Hill is Called " Parachute " because if you are in Road shoes you will wish you had a Parachute with you.
I have 5 Favorite - Must Do Trail Run Events in my Yearly schedule.
You can tell who the Trail Innocents are - you come up to a Mud Hole or water crossing and they are trying very hard to stay dry and sparkling clean while the experienced Trail Hounds just charge straight through like a kid finding a mud puddle to splash in. A few fun photo's of trail running.@ContraryMaryMary The 3 pigs 2 day sounds like a nice challenge event. There are getting to be more of that style event around, some incorporate a Zulu Obstacle Course type event for the first short course portion of it.
This was the powerlines route last week some friends were out on.
It was a lot of laughing. And yes those are shoe marks sliding down the hill 😂 at least they had fun.
Note the big water puddle waiting for them at the bottom of the hill.
This water crossing was a little on the chilly sidepolskagirl01 wrote: »I traveled Friday & Saturday and am now jet-lagged and there are rolling hills no matter which way I go. @polskagirl01 So roughly where in the States??
In case one of our many mutual MFP Running Friends is close by for a meet and greet at an event?
Like you I like to keep myself close to HM Ready ( recreational not race level ) as it is easier to maintain conditioning at that level than it is to do a build back up to it.6 -
