Keto works because of CICO (CI being less than CO if the goal is to lose). CICO is not a diet.I can have bacon, fried eggs etc etc loads of mince with spices and chicken and veg a plenty ...
You can have all those things not doing keto too, I did.
I personally found it hard to fit in the veg I like to eat (I usually have more than 10 servings, sometimes well over) without stressing about going over, especially if I had yogurt (plain) or nuts that day (and I like to have nuts every day), and certainly could not have fit in those things and chocolate too, even dark chocolate, but I understand that's not going to be a problem for many people, and don't assume others have my dietary goals and preferences. I was not suggesting that because I ultimately found nothing special about keto and some things I did not like that it was not going to be a good fit for you or some others -- in fact, I said the opposite!no weighing etc and still the weight comes off you and you get thinner .its magic
It's not magic at all. It's either that it reduces appetite or (often) that you've cut out the foods you tend to overeat and haven't yet found replacements and are probably motivated not to go nuts with the foods you can eat. I could easily overeat on keto, although if I had recently started and was trying to lose I would exercise care with foods such as cheese and nuts and so on so that I would not.

Keto is not magic. There are some reasons it helps SOME imho. A increase in protein and basically banning many energy dense Hyperpalitable foods.11

I fully encourage anyone who thinks that keto will either be a natural fit for them or will help them in some way to give it a try for a period of time. I fully discourage anyone from thinking that it is necessary for weight loss or that they can eat as much as they want because it is magic. I also discourage people from buying ketosis strips.21

Its changed my body shape as well as lost the weight.i was stuck at 12st 12lbs on my CICO then keto and bang 9 lbs off over just a few weeks and my tummy gone.
Keto is amazing and really kickstarts the weight drop
I changed my body shape through weighlifting - now I get to eat even more of the foods that I love (including pizza!) and don't feel restricted. I'm in maintenance and never went keto.
I'm glad keto worked for you but please know you will lose however you create your deficit regardless of food choices and body shape changes as weight lowers and fitness levels change. Maybe keto reduces belly bloat better for some but that doesn't actually come from fat or composition changes.10 -

Exactly this. There is no way I would give up pizza for no reason. Carbs are great for fueling workouts and they make me happy. I couldn't be happy eating on a diet as restrictive as keto especially when the restrictions are unnecessary for weight loss.10 -
It would be interesting to see if someone was able to eat their maintenance calories and drop the carbs and see what happens ...3

No, you misunderstand (perhaps because you're invested in it being "magic"). No one is knocking keto, we're pointing out that losing weight is about CICO. That and that the initial drop in weight people often get when being on a ketogenic diet is all water, not actually fat.9 -

Studies and meta analyses have been done on comparing diets. Lot's of 'em and some very long term and high participant ones. After a little water weight loss for this doing keto, nothing. All diets work on the same principle based on the first law of thermodynamics.

Keto is no better or no worse than any other diet. In the final analysis, the best diet is the one you can stick with for the long haul that will sustain you at a healthy body weight. It's all about preference and compliance.

I'm glad you found what works for you, and that keto makes calorie deficit easier for you. It makes it harder for me because I overeat on it. What I usually don't understand, though, is people saying "I can eat X and lose weight". I can too, and I don't need to do keto to eat anything I want. I have chocolate, fried eggs, kebab, plenty of vegetables, in addition to pizza, pasta, potatoes, beans, ice cream, and anything else I feel like having. I actually had 80 grams of cheese this morning, something keto followers claim is exclusive to their diet.11

Um, you maintain. I have been keto for a long time. I have carb up days here and there but I eat 1800cal/day and I maintain. If I drop it I lose. I need to lose about 20lbs. I was working on just maintaining for a while but it is time to wrap my head around losing again....
I am sure he poster above stated their “magic” reference in regards to the lowered cravings and hunger. But this forum goes off on a tangent if things are not worded perfectly.

Same. Fat is delicious, at least to me personally it tastes much better than carbs. I could give bagels up for cheese an so on down the list, and be perfectly happy eating that way. I can also overeat this way, I enjoy it too much.
But when I eat that way, I can't get my HR over 160. I'm a cyclist and that's really a big problem. Without carbs, you can't go anaerobic. That means I lose about 40 watts. And that's a non starter.7 -

No idea what you are on about to be honest.counting calories had me bumbling around 12st 12 for weeks , I go on keto and then boom I'm now at my lowest recorded adult weight within 6 weeks , that to me is impressive. Whether folk like it or not keto for me has had an incredible effect as a "diet" that helps.Keto all the way from now.ive a goal for one more stone to come off and I will be at my BMI target and I'm sure Keto will help get me there and I agree watching calories would eventually do the same.i never count calories on keto, I eat as much as I want and find I'm losing weight faster than ever.great.16 -

But one more time, for all the kids out there:
CICO is an equation of energy balance. Calories in < calories out = weight loss. Calories in > calories out = weight gain. Calories in = calories out = weight maintenance. It always holds true, regardless of diet.
"Calorie counting" is a practice to ensure one's calories in < calories out. A person doesn't have to count calories to lose weight, as long as they are eating in such a way so as to limit calories. In this case, eating a keto diet is causing the OP to effortlessly take in fewer calories than his body is burning. It may not for others.
OP, congratulations on your success! Do be aware that just as one drops a fair amount of water weight when initially cutting carbs out of their diet, any time you reintroduce those carbs, whether a one time thing or permanently, there will be a corresponding spike on the scale, and there may be some associated bloating. The scientific explanation for this is that each gram of carbs holds roughly 3 grams of water. You cut carbs, you lose all of that water. You increase carbs, you significantly increase your water retention. Don't be discouraged or worry when this happens... it's not fat, it's just your body doing it's job. 24 -

And BTW, this statement indicates that you were simply not counting your calories accurately and/or consistently or simply weren't in a deficit at that particular calorie level. There's no shame in that- most of us struggle with that at some point- but it doesn't mean CICO is invalid or that calorie counting isn't an effective tool.19 -

One last point here. I don't know if you said how long exactly you have been on keto. As has been mentioned, you may be
"eating as much as you want" and that just isn't resulting in you eating as many calories as it does when you are eating other kinds of foods. However, if you are new to keto, you could well be taking in too many calories and still show a significant loss on the scale due to the explanation I gave above. Time will tell. If the loss continues over many weeks, great! If not, it's likely you only lost water weight due to the initial cut in carbs and you will still need to establish how many calories you are taking in.8 -

I did keto, weight dropped. And I’ve managed to maintain going off keto. Idk why people are so “ what’s going to happen when
what what happens when ” it’s not that hard or complicated as people want to make it seem to be.
I’ve lost over 15lbs so far without counting calories. And I never experienced the water weight or weight gain come back due to introducing carbs back into my diet.10 -
I don't think people here are snooty toward keto at all.
I think most non keto eaters feel the same as me - keto is great for those who like it
The pushback only comes when people make unrealistic claims of the " I can eat all I want and still lose" ilk or keto evangelists who seem to think keto is best for everyone.

Keto is great and I’ve studied the WOE for a year before starting last July!
The problem is most really just do not understand the BENEFITS and that’s totally fine. Whatever works for one person doesn’t mean it’ll work for everyone!
When someone finds something that works for THEM there is absolutely NO harm in posting that! Why not be happy that it works for them instead of bashing that person or complaining? Or pointing out YOUR WOE and telling them how great yours is?
Its about that poster not you. You should more say Glad it’s working!20 -

In answer to previous question...7th week now, I'm not a hardened keto dieter as I do like a vodka , my point was I was stuck for weeks at nearly 13st till I tried keto .I now weigh 12'3 and have lost all my belly fat, 11 lbs of water weight though so the "experts " tell me 😂12
