FASTING, love it or hate it?

I love it and follow it for many years. Before people found the name of this diet. How about 25 years?? already....
I love skip breakfast, I do 18/6 4 days a week, then I fast 20/4 2 days a week; also 24 hrs 1 time a week. Surprisingly, I feel my best at my 24 hr fast. Smallest hunger feeling comes on 24 hrs fast too.
(OMAD) one meal a day diet have been practiced by many followers all around the world. It is only a matter of your body to get accustomed to feed on the fat instead of carbs in your diet. After meal my body seamlessly transfers it's energy burning to the internal fat sources, that's why I never feel hungry. The body can be trained and perfectly adopted to the fat consumption instead of carbs. Thankfully, the fat sources of the body almost endless.18 -

13/11? Isn’t that just... life? I eat dinner around 7:30 - 8, often don’t eat anything after dinner, go to bed around 11:30, get up at 5:30, work out in the morning, take conference calls from home till 8-8:30, get to work around 9 and usually have coffee and breakfast then.
I had no idea I was an intermittent faster....

I find that intermittent fasting, with some modifications, works best for me. My modifications are that I have creamer with my coffee in the morning, and I don't have an exact eating window. I have a protein bar around 4:00 pm, dinner around 6:00 or 7:00, and a treat later, anywhere from 10:00 to midnight. I find it's an effective means to control my tendency to eat when I'm bored.3

Well, by that definiton we are nearly all intermittent fasters - I do something like 10/14 (if I have understood this numerical system correctly??) - my last food is around 10 pm, and then coffee/breakfast usually around 8:00 next morning.
I mean, unless you eat absolutely last thing before sleeping and absolutely first thing on waking, (or wake up and eat in middle of night, I suppose) wouldn't most people do something similar?

I use the Zero Fasting Tacker app and like it. It’s free with thus far no extra-paying premium version. I like it.
Do a search and you’ll easily find it.

We ARE all intermittent fasters which is why it is such a stupid name. Unless you sleep walk and eat you are definitely fasting at some point.12 -
I love it. I've now progressed to a 20/4 window and it works the best for me (I am inclined to night binge when I consume most of my calories during the day).1

Yeah, I think it's one of a variety of possible tools for preventing mindless eating, and for those who find it useful for that, I think it can be great.
And again, that's basically the same reason I eat only meals no snacking. I don't think there's been a lot of talking about energy lags, let alone dread of them. On another thread someone was saying that IFing prevents energy lags for people who tend to feel tired after eating (I don't feel tired after eating unless I eat poorly). What is an issue for me is that I like to eat relatively soon after certain kinds of workouts. I am sure some of that is based on bro science (better to refuel within a period of time) that isn't really so important, and some is just habit and I wouldn't feel like I wanted to eat within an hour or so after if I broke myself of the habit, but since it's causing no issues and is how I feel it's a consideration for me -- and since I often run in the morning I like having breakfast after.
I really think all this is personal, which is why the love or hate thing makes no sense. I love that IF works great for some people, and I love the (different) schedule that works for me. And for those who find lots of mini meals helpful, I love that for them, and don't think they are doing it wrong either.1 -

I like 20/4 but currently target 18/6 (while remaining flexible) after coming off a 45-day "science experiment" of doing 22/2. These are more challenging unless you're a "one-man band" when considering the eating timing preferences of others who are part of your life.
It's nice that you know yourself and can admit your night binge tendency when consuming most of your calories during the day. It's rigorous honesty like yours that is probably the most important element for having success. Reading your share is a breath of fresh air.
Obviously, you still need a calories deficit to get any weight-loss goals achieved as many here will constantly remind all IF-curious because, if you don't exist on a calories deficit, you'll not achieve your weight loss or weight maintenance goals. I continue to be amazed at those who share how they gained weight practicing IF. Obviously, they did not have an IF mindset that has an inherent eating less requirement for weight loss, the reason most people embark on an IF journey. Now that I'm comfortably in maintenance-land, I continue to practice IF as a lifestyle finding it aligns with the ebbs and flows of my lifestyle activities.
Think about it, if you have a smaller feeding window than before practicing IF and gain weight, you've got to be chowing down at a blistering pace to short-circuit the benefit IF offers. Sort of like lifting weights and getting weaker or losing muscle tone.

Hate it. I can't restrict myself like that or I'll crack and eat just to break the rules. I'm a rule breaker. The only rule I can stick to is limiting my calorie intake, and definitely not drastically (0.5lb to 1lb a week). D@mn the Man! Down with authority!
...I'm 36 and definitely shouldn't still be rebelling like this...7 -

IF is totally a preference thing. Timing and frequency of meals has little to nothing to do with overall health and weight.
I usually skip breakfast, because I am fine on just coffee in the mornings and it allows me to have larger meals later in the day. But if I am hungry in the morning, I eat.
I am currently about 21 hours into a 36 hr fast though.. this is for spiritual reasons more than fitness.
Play around with some fasting. Self experimentation (within reason) is a good thing.2 -
I love it. I’ve been an intermittent faster since the 1970s, way before it had a name. Lol. It’s just the way I like to eat. I fast during the day, but drink coffee & water. First meal is between 3-5pm. I stop eating at around 10 or 11pm. In bed at midnight. I like it because I have crazy energy when I’m in the fasting period.2

It’s popularly called intermittent fasting to distinguish it from the other intermittent eating method many people practice called intermittent overeating or IO.
I practiced IO for a couple years and gained weight. Since mid-September 2018 I resumed IF and lost the gained weight plus more. I’ve never gained weight practicing IF but I’ve learned here at MFP that some have.

I've lost nearly 30kg from fasting 2 days a week it's the easiest thing I've ever done to lose weight.1

And yet it's not IO, so clearly the options aren't IF/IO (and it's not hard to overeat eating in a shorter period of time if one is not otherwise doing things to control cals, like selecting more sating foods or caring about activity rate and food choice).
The Eat Stop Eat guy prefers the term intermittent eating for his method, which I kind of like.4 -

Well I don't know that it is stupid - but I guess posters need to define what they mean when they say they are doing it as there seems so many variations, some of which seem no different to non intermittent fasting eating styles.

There is such this as intermittent overeating?? Lol now my mind is blown. I totally agree with IF.. I've done it for 2 years. But I think giving it a name makes it seem complicated. All it means is that you dont eat in the morning (depending on what timing method you use). It's not some new genius weigt loss technique. It simply helps you save your calories and stay in a deficit8
