Let it GO! Decluttering (simplifying) your life of (people, places or things) success stories?

On Monday, I finally let some stuff go to an antique dealer. Most of it was my parent's stuff that I was just holding onto - as if clutching it all tight would make the loss of them easier to deal with. I still have a lot to let go of and some more stuff will go in a neighbor's yard sale and more yet probably to this dealer so it was a start. I also know the dealer got a steal but I'm glad these things will hopefully bring happiness to someone, as they did my parents; at least it's better than being stuck in boxes for 15 years in a damp, dark basement. It's not easy and I'm dealing with fresh grief at letting it go, but so far I'm not turning to food for comfort as I did for so many years. Progress!6

{{{{{{{ LOVE and HUGS }}}}}}} Girlfriend, as with everything, you're not alone. When I find myself at that place, it's usually because I'm not getting my proper sleep/rest. Reading The Bible REALLY helps me get my JOY on and inspires/encourages me too--big time, soooo much! Rest can be different from sleep too, sometimes just lying down and chilling with a nice candle or some really beautiful soothing music helps me. OR taking an extravagant hot bath (with a tub filled with scented epson salts, bubbles, bath bombs, perfumed oils or if that's can't be done, taking a hot bath and making bubbles with shampoos or something like that. Getting out of the tub and pampering yourself with some body lotions and perfume and then taking a good ole nap works too. Sometimes watching a documentary on some troubled or war torn place around the world and our country, helps me to snap out of feeling BLAH and get my grateful on. Also watching some fun old school movies like My Fair Lady, Fiddler on the Roof, The sound of Music, The King and I, Gone with the Wind or something else nice you liked and haven't seen in a long time too. I also have some CUTE adult coloring books and colored pencils and pens and that snaps me out of the blahs too. Whatever it is that's demotivating you, I'm going to be praying for you my friend, starting RIGHT NOW! Here's some other stuff that may help:

Thank you my friend, I think its sleep related. The links were informative, and I love the old movies idea!0 -
I don't know why, but all my "get up and go" got up and went!
Gotta find something to inspire me!
Schedule something?
Plan a party?
When my mother is staying over or people coming by, or leaving for travel THEN I'll get it done.
Or tell yourself "just 5 minutes". Once you start, it builds momentum.
Thank you Cory, these are also great suggestions! I'm going to go do paperwork filing for 5 minutes, and go from there.1 -
Update: I filed paperwork for about 10 minutes, then went and cleaned the kitchen. Hubby and I watched a movie tonight, too. Thanx for the suggestions!6

Progress indeed! Congratulations are in order, for making such hard decisions. Its heartbreaking sometimes, but as you said, better for someone to love it.2 -
Well, the need to declutter has finally reached it's pinnacle as we are in the process of buying a house and will get the keys on July 4th!
I told DH that I wanted to get a skip to throw things into but said that he would rather buy a trailer and take it to the local household recycling centre as at least we have something physical for our money (and the two cost about the same anyway).
I am just, ever so, excited. Eight years of living in a rental has been awful, I have not felt properly secure in all of that time. Did I say that I am just ever so excited?11 -

My absolute honor and pleasure. It's so ummmm, encouraging/empowering to hear someone taking a tough/HARD/difficult and serious situation and turning it into something better--again, super impressive and again YAY YOU!0 -
This week's decluttering is the bathrooms. Not a lot of decluttering to do in the spare, so I scrubbed the tub.4

Thank you for sharing this, for me weight loss and cleaning up have gone hand in hand, I have found that cleaning up provides a sufficient distraction for the cravings so that I can figure them out, i.e. are they hunger? boredom? other feelings? The benefit to cleaning everything and to getting rid of much unused items is that I feel lighter, not only in my body, but my home too. Still have a few areas to go for cleaning/organizing. Thinking I am going to tackle the kitchen cupboards and the pantry this weekend!4

My absolute pleasure and THANK YOU for posting/contributing to this thread. I LOVE how you're using decluttering as a "distraction", that is so wise and powerful and inspirational of you. Girlfriend, that's the TRUTH about being in a cleaner less cluttered or clutter free environment, you DO feel lighter in mind, body and soul/spirit. I'm a witness to that. You're fabulous, period. Here's to cheering you on as you seek and destroy/LET IT GO AND DON'T LOOK BACK at the clutter/excess/mess from the cupboards and pantry. YAY YOU!!!!1 -

I LOVE the way you think Snoo...you are soooo funny AND thought provoking too1 -
I have way too many tops. Many of them I put away for the season then bring them out again the next season & have been doing it for years, but there's some I just don't wear. It's so hard to get rid of them when I still like them & they fit (but I don't wear them) . I'm thinking of putting them in a bag in the closet & if I don't wear or miss them, then I'll donate them.4

That's a good idea.1 -
Spending the weekends burning wood at the rental house. Hubby's sawing wood, clearing the yard, and mowing.2

Good for you, and I am a witness that the things (excess stuff that maybe cute or even gorgeous and valuable but taking up space and/or collecting dust). Once you get rid of them, you will NOT even miss them one wit--I can promise that. It seems like you will, but you really won't. That you are even considering getting rid of some excess stuff is tremendous--YAY YOU!0 -

I cleaned and organized my apartment before I left for vacation. I got back yesterday. It was so nice to walk into a clean apartment. There is still some more to do like organize my desk and clean out my closet. I plan to do that this weekend. I will also drop off some books to donate to the charity bookstore. I have 20 books to donate right now.5
-
There are so many different charity trucks that will come right to your house and pick up your clothes etc. Plus I have given away clothes and stuff to friends. I don't feel bad about releasing these things because I know someone else can use it. Over a year ago I detoxed from a friend and didn't shed one tear. She was a liar and troublemaker so good riddance to bad rubbish. Went through all the kids' old toys etc. and donated so much. I still have more stuff to do in the house. One thing I can't seem to shake yet are magazines. I cannot stop tearing out articles, recipes, drug store finds etc. Those make the biggest mess in my house. I was only allowing myself to read Us/People or Readers Digest but find I am still tearing out stuff like the jokes from Readers Digest. I am trying to same magazines when I go on vacation only so they are sitting in a pile. But sometimes I do grab one. I do find them relaxing to read and I do find some interesting articles or helpful hints...so still need help with that.3
-
I am not good about letting go of magazines either! Sometimes I just bite the bulllet & throw a bunch out without rechecking if there was an interesting article, lol.4
