It's been a 'hide in your bedroom eating pb blondies as you try not to lose your mind due to the boy having a lunatic day' kinda day. Not a great food week for me in general. Such is life. I've made a yummy prawn salad for lunch at work tomorrow. Onwards and upwards.5

I still have those days and my son is 21.3

I'm suffering some major work / life guilt. I watched war on plastic on the BBC, and have been trying to cut down on my single use plastics anyway, but I work for a company that makes packaging machinery. I just had a meeting this morning with some of the salesmen who were complaining how the produce packaging sector is deathly quiet. I'm rolling my eyes at the lack of environmental care, but I'm just as hypocritical because I work here too! I can't afford to quit my job but I really think we SHOULDN'T be packaging food unnecessarily. Unfortunately it's difficult to find something else that's close by in my rural location and that allows me to work part-time hours for similar money. If the money's not the same, I can't afford childcare until the kids both start school, which is 2 years away. I feel like I'm just going to have to swallow my morals for a while until we're in a better position. Assuming the company doesn't go under due to consumers bring more plastic aware!
Tldr: first world hand wringing but it kinda feels important.

This topic gives me heartburn, too, Anne-Marie. We use a lot of plastics in medicine.
Plastic recycling companies dump plastic people want to recycle into the ocean because there's not a good profit margin for it. I could think of worse things for government to do than take over ACTUALLY recycling the plastic for the good of the planet and to provide jobs for people who need them. Government is supposed to promote the common good after all.2 -

The BBC series was good because it touched on so many different aspects such as how throwaway consumers are, but also how we don't recycle what we create and export it to poorer countries and the supermarkets don't offer consumers an alternative must of the time anyway. It really got me thinking.
I'll knit some reusable dishcloths to soothe my aching soul!2 -
That subject is even worse when you don't have recycling facilities nearby or a service to pick them up from your home. I don't like to toss all the aluminum and plastics, but we don't have anywhere to take them for recycling that isn't fifty miles away.2
-
We would also have to haul recycling somewhere not nearby. We do save aluminum cans and donate them to the VFW.2
-
We actually have curbside pick-up but it only comes every other week. Garbage comes weekly.
I need recycle to come weekly and garbage every other week!4 -
Confession:
I went to Houser's shoes with my husband to use his voucher toward a pair of new steel toe boots. (He's an IT guy, but for a manufacturing plant so the steel toes are required. Even the HR VP keeps a pair at her desk. I am told they look funny with a skirt suit. ) They were having a fantastic sale for Independence Day. We spent $109 and change. His boots were completely paid for by his company.
I bought myself new hiking sandals and a new pair of Dansko-type clogs for work. The actual brand is BOC. The actual Dansko's were not included in the sale. I love shoes. I love them more on sale.5 -
Hottest day of the year and I ate most of my calories as ice cream!6

I wish there was a way to recycle chip bags easier & food wrappers from candy bars, protein bars, & other various food items. I looked it up & apparently there's a thing called Terracycle, but it's extremely pricey.0 -
I have cut down on single use plastics as much as I can. I have a kit I carry that has stainless steel straws and metal utensils so I do not use plastic ones when eating out. I use reusable containers instead of baggies when possible. And reusable shopping bags always.
However, there are times I use plastics too.
I think if we all just do our best to save where we can, that is something, which is always better than nothing.2 -
Went to Hershey Park yesterday & had a blast!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INOCRa_D4xU
My nephew wanted to ride on the front seat of this one & while we're starting to ride up the hill I said, "what did you just get us into?" LOL! The only ride I screamed on that I almost went hoarse. My sister's husband told my sister that he thought I had died since I probably stopped screaming at one point.
My nephew & I rode this one again before the park closed (park closed at 10:00) & I didn't scream as much (we went on the front seat again) since I think it was actually scarier during the daylight from being able to see a far distance away & see the highway, buildings inside the park, & other rides.
This one was also pretty fun & is called Storm Runner
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AjmBOydksc4
At first I thought it wasn't going to be intense because it started out slow, but then all of a sudden it kicked into gear like a bolt of lightning.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otxPSpJXMvQ
This ride is nuts on the way up since it looks like you're going to not have a track when you descend back down. You're practically riding up looking up at the sky & it almost feels like you're laying on your back. Fahrenheit was my first coaster/ride of the day.
A lot of the wooden coasters are also a blast
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HisONeuB740
The Wildcat
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0zuDowuhr8
Lightning Racer has two tracks & cars that compete to see who will win3 -
Cedar Point supposedly has a lot of nuts roller coasters & this is on my list to eventually try someday.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOb74I6Yfz0
I'm the nuts kind of person that would hope it wouldn't crest & then you get to ride it backwards & do the ride again. It's hilarious watching this guy ride it.
This coaster even though it doesn't look intense as far as going upside down it looks freaking fast as hell!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uTJLOgXcjPg
This one is the fastest roller coaster in the world at 150 miles an hour (in Abu Dhabi) & the guys face on the right looks like it's going to melt off.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ijuQwnfBBZw&t=1s
I'll do coasters all day long, but give me a ride like the scrambler or any that either goes upside down a lot or spins around & around & I'll be sick to my stomach.5 -
Confession: I had a legit mini-binge last night. Handfuls of Cadbury mini-eggs, then buttered pop-tarts, then Whoppers candy and some mini Hershey bars. This was after dinner and seconds. My stomach hurt and I still kept eating. This is new to me. I think it has to do with the 90 carbs my coach has me on. I'm going to talk to him about it, because I did not like that feeling!6
-
Kelli, those coasters look insane!! I would love to try some of them.
Quik, I hope you get a carb level that keeps you from bingeing!! I know some days I can catch myself just going back for random stuff and not really find what it is that settles the craving.0 -
@kellyjellybellyjelly I did Cedar Point a few years ago (I missed the queen's diamond jubilee for it - bad Brit!) and I can highly recommend. I am useless at remembering ride names but yes, the woodie was massive and awesome. We never did fail to crest on the tall one (millennium force??) and I also secretly wanted to go backwards. I actually preferred Cedar Point's tall coaster to Kingda Ka at six flags (did that on the same trip). The airtime hill at the end was better. I haven't ridden a coaster in a few years what with being pregnant all the time. I really want to now!!2
-
I feel like I am getting back to a size where I would feel comfortable getting on a coaster. I shied away from them as I got bigger. I miss riding them.5

I'm taking the two oldest grandkids to Six Flags over Texas next week. Can't wait!6

Same! It's amazing how fast the recycling fills up compared to the garbage.0 -
Uh oh I've just discovered Minecraft and that is right up my alley. How many hours will I waste on this? Actually not so many as the other half has discovered it too and we share computers.0

Weight lose stalled this week and I remained exactly the same. Can't say I'm surprised, we've had four terrible nights of sleep in a row with barely a three hour stretch between them and mama needs chocolate when she's tired! But I'm down 8lbs in 50 days, I'll take that!4
-
I went to Busch Gardens (Tampa, FL) last week... And recently discovered I get motion sickness on those as well as rickety fair rides. :L Oh Well . The hubbs kept trying to convince me that actual roller coasters are nothing like carnival rides and that I would probably be fine. I had to time my rides out to one an hour and wait a full hour after meals too. At least there's cool animals to look at in between!
So my weight loss has come to a screeching halt since last year.. But I have had 4 people in the last month comment on how much weight I've lost? I'm not sure if it's just taken a year for people to really notice, or if since I am eating less yeast (newly diagnosed allergy) that my stomach is less poofy and that's what people are noticing?? Either way guess I'll ltake it!2 -
Apologies in advance for the racist, homophobic, chauvinistic buffoon who's just become British PM. In our defense, we didn't actually vote for him as a nation, but yeah, it's going to be a pretty embarrassing few months! There endeth the politics for now, I just feel the need to wash my hands of him early on.4
