August goal 100 miles
As far as taper, I've used Hal's plans as-is, and I've also done his HM plan but substituted a longer-than-HM-distance run for the long run the week before the race, because I wanted to be sure I could do it. It worked great for me. My first race ever was a 10k, and I did the same thing for that with good results. Everyone is different though.
One thing I like about the half marathon distance is that you can practice it before the race without beating yourself up too much (like most of us would if we tried that with the marathon distance). If it's taking too much out of you to run 13 miles at an easy pace, perhaps you'd benefit from a slower build-up to the distance.2 -
@mbaker566 But did you remember to start your Garmin before that run?3

Got one more Iowa run in this morning. I should have run longer because then I found out my flight is delayed. Hopefully I'll be getting out soon and will still make my connection, but it's going to be tight. Might get some sprinting in today yet.5 -

Then it never happened, obviously. So stop making up tales.4 -
@eleanorhawkins I have my Garmin connected to Strava, so Garmin sends the run information over to Strava. I play Zombie's Run, but I always just disregard the distance on there. I tend to start ZR while I am still in the house so I can adjust the volume and then put my phone away. So it starts tracking my run before I even leave the house. My advice would be to just go with what Garmin says. My thinking is that a wrist based tracker will be more accurate than a phone based trackers. And multiple trackers will never all be exactly the same so I would just pick one and go with that.5

Honestly, I am seriously considering after 2020 dropping the Pittsburg Full Marathon and only doing the 1/2 instead. I will still do the couple 50k races I do, but those are trail races. 26.2 miles on the road is brutal on the body. Not sure I want to keep up that abuse. 50k on the trail is harder but much nicer on the body.

Exactly this. If it isn't on Strava, it didn't happen. 😜3 -
@shanaber Sorry, you had a rough start of the week. I'm sure it will get better. I can totally relate with tracking devices malfunction. It can be so frustrating. I run with my phone and track the run w/ an app. The problem that I have is that if leave the phone on powersave mode, it will shut down the app and only track when the screen is on. I have had runs that are 1 mile - 45 minutes Hope you week gets better.3
-
Another 1.5 this morning. Today I did 4 minute walk/1 minute run intervals.
August total: 3 miles
(boy that's a change from the 80-100/month I was doing before June LOL)8 -
@eleanorhawkins I'd go with the watch. It's main function is to collect GPas data so it's going to do that to the best of its ability.
The GPS trackers in phones are OK, but not the most accurate. Also running two GPS apps at the same time. Is likely to confuse it and throw up bad data.
I'm with @PastorVincent pick one (the watch lol) and stick with it.6 -
I hope to get 50 miles this month. I had an uneven start.
8/2...2.12 miles.
8/3....3.1 miles.
8/7....5.27 miles.
8/9...Indiana State Fair.
8/11...4.2 miles.
8/13....4.11 miles....An afternoon run. I forgot my music and almost didn't do the run. Anyway, I talked myself into it. I heard snippets of conversation on my run, and saw a lot of people walking their dogs. One dog looked like a Great Dane, but it had pink eyes and no pupils. It was kind of creepy. The run without music wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be.
8/17.....6.2 miles...Longest run in a while. Still hot and humid in the 80's. Felt pretty good. It was mostly tempo running with some sprints. And it helped that my mp3 player was working. Good music really helps the run be really fun. Halfway to goal!
My husband has an appointment with orthopedic surgeon next week. He is still limping, and is having good days and bad. Still plans to hike with me, but I can't see how he will be able to do that.
Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you. I have been using CBD oil to rub into my hips prior to the run. And not experiencing the usual soreness. I think that it doesn't work as well on joints but works great on muscle soreness.
@PastorVincent Thanks for the cake recipe. I'll try it when I get a stretch of days off.
I am only 105 posts behind and plan to catch up in the next couple of days.
total....25 miles.
goal...50 miles.

@eleanorhawkins my phone regularly treks the same run as anything up to 200m difference, very frustrating! I'd go with your watch.
Today was a two-run day for me. 3.4km in the morning with my boyfriend, who was tired from the hill run yesterday so didn't want to go far. Not a great run through the village- too many people and cars about. In the evening, 5.2km in the beautiful Norfolk countryside, it was just lovely!

You would think I would know by now that if I have a day where I have time for a long run, I should just go ahead and do it instead of putting it off until the next day. Something always happens to interfere. Yesterday, I decided to go for a walk and do a 3 - 4 mile run today, since I was supposed to be home all day. Well, at 9:30 pm I got a text asking me to work at the daycare from 6:30 - 3:30. Okay. I can do that and still have time to run. So I said yes, not that I have gotten to the point where I will turn down the daycare simply because I want to run. Maybe someday. Anywho, after I said yes, I remembered that I had to visit my neighbor on the way home to give their 4 year old daughter her birthday present, and of course stay for a little while. Ok. Should still be able to run. But, then this afternoon, after I visited the neighbor, I stopped at mom and dad's. Dad twisted his knee a couple of days ago. He was doing good on it yesterday. Today he can barley put weight on it. We decided to see if we could get him into urgent care before they closed for the night. So I hurried home, let the dog out to pee, picked them up, and off we went. I had looked up the address for the urgent care. It wasn't there! I mean seriously. No where to be found. I check every door in the building at that address. They were all locked. I was half expected the police to show up to see who was trying to break into the hospital annex. So we came home and plan to go tomorrow. I found the correct place, called them, called to get a replacement for my tennis match tomorrow morning, and let work know I may not make it in by 1 tomorrow. I probably had time for a short run, but by that time, I really wasn't in the mood and I was hungry. I won't get to run tomorrow, I know. Hopefully I can squeeze one in Wednesday morning.5

So been a while since I updated. Been a rough month to find time to run. Between triple digit temps and job hunting, I have struggled to get out. I really need to find an HM to 20k race for the fall, but have not had time to look. I also need to be thinking about speed work for the upcoming 10-mile race but have not done that either. In short, I am pretty much doing all the things I advise against, but, eh, I am getting out there when I can!
Todays run was a HM with around 1200 feet of elevation. A pretty standard mid-distance run for me but it was brutally hot so I took it slower than I would like. If I ever actually run a HM race, I hope to shoot for around 1:50, but no idea if I can hit that. While I am faster than many of you, I am not really competition level fast. I leave that for @7lenny7 and others

OH! I found a job. I start on 8/26. It was not my first choice of companies, but I am thinking long term it will be the right choice. I just have to get there first. There is a bit of iffiness on it, as it is contract to hire, but since PA is an "At will" state it is only slightly more iffy than a so-called "direct hire" despite the "permanent" label that direct hire has.
SO I guess I accomplished my major goal for August!12 -

Hadn't logged the last several runs. I've been running regularly but just been too busy to sit down and log. I've been putting the effort in to run outside and it's getting easier.
My last long run I wasn't feeling the gym, so I talked myself into thinking it wouldn't be too bad. 95F with heat index of 105F. I don't know what I was thinking! It was painful. I was feeling that run for a couple of days after and was so dehydrated despite drinking a ton. I learned my lesson.

If you keep drinking and stay dehydrated, you might be low on salt. Eat chips or pretzels or get SUCCEED S Caps.
