It is from a financial aspect, but I really am no good at starting in new social environments. In that respect, I am really not looking forward to it, but I like having money for things like food and shelter, so I will overcome!

Can totally understand that, but yeah, things like food and shelter (not to mention race fees and running shoes) are kinda nice to have and make the peopling thing worth it ;-)

So this is going to get you very varied answers:
1) Some people own more than one pair of active running shoes.. say 3 or 4 - all different brands/styles. They buy them staggered so they wear out at different times, and they rotate them through each run. Then when one wears out, they replace it with a new pair putting it in rotation with the others. The argument in favor of this is that your foot gets used to just 1 exact pair it can develop muscle weaknesses. I do not think this is true, but I have no proof.
2) Some people have just targeted pairs (one for street, one for the trail, etc) (or just 1 pair) and replace them every X number of miles (whatever the manufacturer claims for that shoe) - regardless if they seem like they need it or not. The argument here is that new shoes are cheaper than weeks of therapy if you get hurt from running on bad shoes.
3) Some people have just targeted pairs (one for street, one for the trail, etc) (or just 1 pair) and replace them when they think they are worn out. The argument here is that shoe manufacturers have a vested interest in you replacing your shoes sooner than they are needed.
4) Some people are shoe hoarders(or collectors). This category is self-explanatory.
Those are the main groups, and of course, there is mix/match/variations on those schemes. In the end, I always advise you to experiment and do what works best for you.
Which category do you fall into?
What Category do I fall into? 1, 2 and maybe partially 4. Since it's a 3hr drive to the closest sporting store I always have a few pairs in reserve. Also since manufactures change the models I have found some shoes no longer work for me. Saucony Peregrine 4 was a great shoe for me, 7 & 8's they seem to have made a small change in the heel cup and now they are not as good a fit - on runs over 15k I will get hot spots on my heel.3 -

Trying to catch up on reading.
@Avidkeo yeah for trail running!! You’ll get hooked.
@Squish815 I’m probably late with words of wisdom on your longest run before you HM, but I usually do mine 2 weeks before and do a slow dropping taper for the next 10 days to 2 weeks. It is what works for me so your mileage may vary (pun intended). My reason is I like to give myself to fully recovery and if I do something stupid to hurt myself I have time to fully recover ha ha. Also if I run like crap I can try it again so I don’t have a defected feeling on race day. It’s all mind games with me. I do advise you stay off the treadmill for the weeks leading up, know your road pace and how it feels.
Okay my work computer is losing its mind so I’ll have to try and catchup at home later.

@emmamcgarity - I guess I am a bit of category 1 because I have multiple pairs in rotation but I also have targeted pairs for long runs and speed work. I will buy 'extra' pairs of my favorite brand/style especially when they are being replaced by a new version until the new version comes down in price and I have a chance to try it. I wished I had done this before because my favorite brand has not made any new shoes for a couple of years now and it would be awesome to have had a few pairs in reserve!
Had a better run yesterday than my run on Sunday. Legs still felt tired and cranky so I fell back to doing run/walk intervals for much of it. My watch issues continued though with it restarting multiple times messing up the pace and distance (no I really didn't run that mile in 4 mins).

I had a nice 6.26 mile run this morning. I played Zombies Run and had lots of zombie chases. I count that as speed work. It is basically doing fartleks only you don't decide when to sprint, the game decides for you. You just run faster when you get the notification that zombies were detected and run hard until they are evaded. Or until you drop some of your supplies to distract them. I think it is a lot of fun.

@kgirlhart you know, I had forgotten about chases! I turned them off when I started running alone in the dark cause they were scaring the bejayzuz outta me lol!
4 -
@eleanorhawkins It seems like every time I play and run either through the cemetery or just on the road along side the cemetery I have zombie chases. I don't ever run that way when it is dark though. I have had a time or two early in the morning especially when it is cloudy that they do kind of give me the willies.3
-
I always have chases off, but maybe should try again. They are just so damn inconvenient. I'll have to wait for traffic and then start getting chased, drop all of sports bras and pot plants; then I'm upset.3
-
@T1DCarnivoreRunner Yeah, they can be inconvenient. I always hate when I get one when I have barely started and am not really warmed up yet. Or I've finished my run and I'm stopping my watch and digging for my phone to turn it off.3

Like when in the space of a few minutes you find ammo, a baseball bat, a pitchfork and a first aid kit... you just KNOW it's going to get scary quickly :-D I learned the hard way though that it's best not to say 'oh *kitten* they're coming' out loud when there are lots of people about!

Notes:
Looks like I have a few days of catching up! Here's the sparknotes version (lol):
Saturday- very hot and humid weather for my 8K race. The course was hilly, as expected, with the last mile entirely up hill. The race photographer was set up at the top of the very last hill, only a tenth of a mile or so before the finish line. I told him it was mean to take photos at the top of a hill and he rewarded my impudence by taking my picture mid-sentence Final time was 40:40, 9th female overall and 1st in my age group. I was really hoping to finish under 40 minutes, but given the challenging conditions I will take it. Also, this was the first race since moving to MD that I haven't had to walk at all (the hills are killing me!) so that's a win!
Aforementioned photo:
Sunday- another killer hot and humid day. I had plans to meet up with Kristine (kristinegift!) for a long run tour of the potomic/national mall/etc but we decided to reschedule given the awful running conditions. I ended up getting all 14 of my miles in by doing a few out/backs so I could stop by my car for ice water and gatorade.
Monday- another planned rest day that was foiled by Manny! He is just getting back to running so I'm trying to be extra supportive. We did two very leisurely miles on the trail; HR and RPE were quite low so I guess it's almost as good as a rest day right
Today- easy 4 mile run this morning before work. It was already really hot and humid at 6 am when I started; I can't wait for this horrible weather to break! Unfortunately I have a track workout on the schedule for tonight, so I guess I get to suffer through the heat a bit more. Current forecast is saying real feel of 92*F and 66% humidity at 7pm
Upcoming Races
08/02: Going Green Track Meet - 2M and 1M (14:54 2M - 1st in AG, 6:39.3 1M - 7th female - 2nd in AG)
08/11: Groovin’ Woodstock XC - 7K (34:15 - 3rd female)
08/17: Eastern County 8K (40:40 - 9th female - 1st in AG)

I ran 3 miles on Sunday, 2.4 miles home from the car dealership yesterday, and 7 miles today. Skipped the rest day, there, but Sunday and Monday were such comparatively short runs that I'm going to let it stand. The car picked up a screw in the front passenger tire, which had a very bad toe-in wear to it. I have a full-sized spare, so I dropped it off for an alignment and tire rotation, rotating that bad tire out. It was time for an oil change while we were at it, and I asked if they could check on the state of the brake shoes and pads. It turns out that an alignment wouldn't hold until they corrected an issue with the tie-rod end and I needed new plugs and wires, too. Thank goodness the brakes turn out to be ok! They also wanted to overcharge me to replace the wipers and there's a totally minor oil leak they would have liked to fix. I'm not made of money. The car is ready and I need to shower - the husband will be home any minute and we can go pick it up. But the dealership is on a busy road with no sidewalks. I think I won't do that again - they can drop me off in their shuttle.

It's hot outside now. I don't normally eat before running, but I'm going to eat now and delay tonight's run until it cools down... maybe after dark. There is supposed to be thunderstorms too, and will cool fast then. Hopefully I won't just skip it.
Next marathon is 9/1 and I can't afford to skip any runs at this point.

Well i've had nearly two weeks off for no particular reason. 5km tonight, decided to do slow/easy. Happy surprise to find it was basically standard time... (ie very slow for any normal person) i now have nearly 400posts to read.

2. Distance 65km....15km

@ariceroni Congrats on your AG win! I wish I could look that good at the end of a race!
@autumnblade75 Dealerships are notorious for wanting to correct things that don't need to be done and overcharging for repairs. Glad your brakes were okay.
@T1DCarnivoreRunner Hope you got your run in and it was cooler. Those temps are crazy!0 -

My run on Sunday was a tough one. It was humid and the park was crowded with a festival. Ran slow but couldn’t keep my heart rate down. When I run any slower than 10:00/mile (running slow, not run/walk) my form gets sloppy.
Intervals on Monday were done on a treadmill on a work trip. Did 9 .5Ms with a 2:30 walk break between each.
Today’s run was much better. Humidity wasn’t quite as high, but instead of focusing on staying slow, I ran at a comfortable pace with better form. I think if I want to keep it easy, I need to take walk breaks instead of running slowly. As a result, my right shin hurts and I blame my sloppy run last Friday of 8.5Ms and Sundays slow run.
Tomorrow is a rest day so I plan on walking in the morning and relaxing by the pool in the afternoon. Today is day 1 of 19 off!!!!!
Hope everyone had a nice weekend and an even better week!!

Today was such a long day! Because of scheduling issues this week I needed to do strength training this morning and speedwork tonight (instead of my usual Wednesday night). Because I knew I was running later again (and I slept too long), I only did a short warm-up of 1.4 miles before strength training in the am. Strength training featured a fair amount of legs today so I knew I was going to be in for some tired legs tonight.
I had an all-day meeting at work and then before running group, sadly some of us stopped by calling hours for the son of a friend - one of our run group members. Our friend is such a funny and entertaining guy, always the clown and guy we tease good-naturedly, and it is so incredibly sad. It ended up taking much longer than expected to get through the line at calling hours so we were late getting to run group and they were just finishing the warm-up. The calendar had said we were doing hills, but the coach switched hills to next week and the workout tonight was 60-90-30 second intervals with 30-second recovery between. The planned workout was to do 5-6 sets (HM or marathon) but my friend and I who arrived late did a warm-up during the first two sets and then completed 4 sets. We ended with sprints - I did 4 of them - and then a cool-down. My total for the night was about 4.1 miles, so the day's total was 5.5 miles.
My legs are definitely tired after all that and are going to be sore tomorrow. I'm tired and ready for bed.6 -

It's ok everyone... I was right and the thunderstorms cooled things down very fast.
Unfortunately, I ate at some point in the 2 hours before running and that ended up being a big problem. I got 4.98 miles and then spent more time on the toilet than I did running. And I will be back. I feel so sick right now.

I decided to push my pace a tiny bit tonight to see if I’d built up enough endurance that I wouldn’t wear out before the end of my training run. I ended up with my longest run ever. 4.84 miles. I know many of you are more seasoned and running greater distances, but I’m beginning to feel less like a beginner runner. When does a person stop being a beginner anyway? Having just started in February I know I’m still fairly new. I guess I need to pick out a race at some point too. I’m not sure where to begin on picking a good one. Or is it just a matter of finding a day on the calendar and just doing it instead of finding the “right race”?11

Google races in your area and you should find a listing, or a couple of listings, of possible races. We mainly look at racesonline.com for our area. I picked my first one because it was at a park where my husband and I ran anyway, for a cause we were familiar with.
In some ways I think we are all beginners! I’m coming up on my third year running and still have so much I haven’t done yet.2 -
8/20: 3mi, 4mi (7mi total)
