@quilteryoyo I still need to check what they've inflated the tires to - anyone want to bet it's higher than the plate on the door says? I looked up the part that's leaking oil - apparently, the leaked oil can run down into the spark plugs and foul the engine. I might actually care to have that fixed, at some point. But I can definitely do better than their price for wipers. If only the independent mechanics in this area could do something with this car. It seems like every problem turns out to be one that they haven't got the right diagnostic tools for, and they recommend taking it to the dealer.2

@ariceroni , I’m not sure where you are in MD but I’m originally from Bethesda and the BCC YMCA does a Turkey Chase every Thanksgiving which is a lot of fun. You might want to check it out.0

I ended up with my longest run ever. 4.84 miles. I know many of you are more seasoned and running greater distances, but I’m beginning to feel less like a beginner runner. When does a person stop being a beginner anyway? Having just started in February I know I’m still fairly new. I guess I need to pick out a race at some point too. I’m not sure where to begin on picking a good one. Or is it just a matter of finding a day on the calendar and just doing it instead of finding the “right race”?
Congrats! Well done!
As for finding races, make sure the ones you are looking at are popular and well attended. Are you connected to a local running club? They would know the best local races. The thing you want to avoid are poorly organized races and that might be difficult to tell from just a web page. Employees at a local running shoe store often know races in the area too.
Given the distances that you are running, I suspect you could handle a 10k race, but since you have not done a race yet I would suggest you stick with a 5k for now.2 -
Sunny and fairly hot (by London standards!) this morning. But I enjoyed my run and am noticing improvements on the hilly sections which is encouraging. Pondering booking a couple more races before December when I’ll have to take time out for surgery.

Way to go on your longest run @emmamcgarity! That is always such a good feeling.
@T1DCarnivoreRunner so sorry your run got cut short due to gastro troubles. Hope you are feeling better by now.
Thought I was taking a short-cut for my 8 mile route this morning. In my head I thought it was going to cut out about 2 miles. Turned out it was exactly the same distance?! You'd never know I've lived here for 31 years.
But it was a good run...but low 80's still suck. Saw the extended forecast. Next Saturday morning supposed to be in the 60's!!!!!!!!!
Oh..As I was sitting and drinking my morning coffee before my run, I went ahead and registered for the Dallas Marathon on December 15th. Probably should have asked the wife for permission first. Oh well, it is what it is.

Warmer and more humid today. Thought sure I was going to get rained on (which I would not have minded), but beat the raindrops home.

@T1DCarnivoreRunner Glad the storm cooled things off for you. Sorry about the tummy issues. Hope you are feeling better this morning.
@emmamcgarity WTG on your longest run! That's always a great feeling. I'm sort of at the same point that you are and love it when I can run just a little further than I have before. Hope you find a great race to try. No real advice since the choices in my immediate area are slim. I guess I should expand my immediate area to an hour or so instead of a 30 min drive. That might help. LOL
@autumnblade75 Good luck with the car issues. Yeah, wiper blades are way over priced at the dealer.
@Scott6255 Hahaha on trying to cut the run short and winding up with the same distance. Glad it was a good run anyway. Mentally thinking you were cutting it short may have helped. It probably would have me, until I reached the 6 mile point and realized how much further I still had to go to get to my ending spot.4 -

Another nice 6.26 mile run this morning. I tried to take it easy and just run so even though I listened to the next episode of Zombies Run, I turned the chases off so I didn't add any sprints into it. Garmin said I was in zone 2 for 1% of the time and zone 3 for 62% of the time and zone 4 for 37% of the time. Yesterday's run where I did some speed work was 2% in zone 2, 13% in zone 3 and 80% in zone 4 and 5% in Zone 5. So today's run was definitely easier than yesterdays, but I'm not really sure how to interpret that data or what zone I should be aiming for. Garmin says that zone 3 is "moderate pace where it is difficult to hold a conversation" and zone 4 is "fast, almost uncomfortable pace". Using those definitions and my perceived effort I would call that zone 4 and zone 5 and say that zone 3 was "easy". For the most part I just ignore the zones and run by feel and how much time I have for a run. I usually have about an hour to an hour and 10 minutes on weekdays and about 2 hours on Sunday for a long run. I'm not training for anything specific at the moment so I usually just run, but I do sometimes try to add in a little speed work. I'm not really sure if that is good or bad to just basically do the same run over and over. But I do enjoy my runs and I think that is important.
@emmamcgarity Congratulations on your longest run to date! I'm not sure when you stop feeling like a beginner. I started running 3 years ago in October and I still feel like a new runner. You should definitely sign up for a race! I haven't run many races compared to a lot of people on here. There are not a lot in my area and I try to sign up for races that are close and don't require overnight travel. The first race I did was a fundraiser for my local animal shelter. I picked it because it was close to my house and I knew the person organizing it.

I did my first run of the week last night, everything was going well. But something happens on the last 15 min. I just couldn't cool down and I felt like I wanted/ needed to throw up. It was horrible. The temperature was not that bad, 84 with humidity index 73, a nice toasty 93. I don't understand. Maybe lack of food, God knows?
Hope everyone has a great week.

@ariceroni Congratulation on finishing first on the age group!!
@PastorVincent Congrats in the new job!! Give it time to get adjusted, you will fine
@autumnblade75 Sorry about the car drama, glad is back on the road.
@shanaber I totally felt like you yesterday. My legs were tired and cranky (good way to describe them). It was not my best day. Sorry about your watch problems. I'm still having problems with my phone GPS. Somehow, it says that I ran more last week (same interval), but I have a faster pace this time, Weird!0 -
No run today, did some cross-training in the form of yard work.
This tree had a pretty garden around it when we moved in, but bunnies, deer, and other animals kept eating it and it was a lot to deal with so it was kind of ignored.
Today we fixed it! Check out the pictures. 1600 pounds of stone! Probably could use a bit more actually. When money starts coming in again we plan to put a 6" wooden fence around to hide the black ring.
Looks way better now.10 -

Based on your discussion of Garmin's zones, I went looking for mine today. I caution readers regarding results:
It said I spent 17 seconds in Zone 1; 3 seconds in Zone 2; 4 seconds in Zone 3; 19 seconds in Zone 4; and 49:02 in Zone 5.
I assume the reports are accurate, but they seem wacky.
I'm going in to see if somehow my Max heart rate reverted to the default value of 153 (220 minus my age).0 -

A warm-up run before strength training in two parts - first I decided to run outside in the area around the gym. I hadn't really prepared ahead for this and didn't have water to carry or a hat or sunglasses. It turned out to be hotter than I anticipated and the late afternoon sun was fierce. I felt like I was going to pass out so I bailed after 30 minutes and went inside to get some water and decided to just finish up on the treadmill. I was a sweaty mess going into strength training. We did mostly core and arms today, thankfully, as my legs are pretty sore from yesterday.7 -
It was a little rougher today..I ate dinner way too close to my run. I won't do that again.

@T1DCarnivoreRunner I hear ya, I am half past over this heat. 124, that beats my 122 on the heat index! Can anyone out there beat 124 degrees?
Tonight wasn’t that bad, mid 90s with a heat index 104. Each time I run I try slowing down more in hopes of finishing 10k without a walk break, and have finally come to the conclusion that no speed exists slow enough to allow me not to get overheated when it’s over 100 heat index. I was doing almost 12 minute miles and still needed a half mile walk break at mile 4 because I was getting nauseated from the heat. I was fine after the break, even did a fast finish for the final .2 miles at 8 minute pace. Just can’t keep running the whole time.6 -
@zamirasoni - hang in there, hopefully your next run will feel great! I think the difference for me is having that extra cross training/rest day.
Got out late again, no surprise. Plan called for 8 mile pace run and I figured I would go for a 5-6 mile pace run given the heat. Well I managed 8+ and some of it was at pace. I stopped for pretty much every drinking fountain since I didn't have my hydration vest. My watch issues continued with multiple restarts causing me to lose distance and the pace. So while I think I went 8+ miles at close to pace my Strava runs (multiple because of restarts) are off on both. I was pleased that despite the heat I felt pretty good, hot for sure but my legs were fine. Went for a swim as soon as I got home and did some pool/aqua running. Had pretty bad cramps in my feet and calves that put and end to that. After rolling and messaging my calves as well as rehydrating and my legs feel pretty great. It is supposed to cool off just a little between now and the weekend, I hope so!

SO Y'ALL! Remember in the July thread when my hand was hurting and going numb and I decided to abort my run and go to the doctor? They did not figure out what was wrong but guessed "bit by a bug" and gave me steroids.
Well! I figured it out! I had been weeding that morning with my bare hands (much easier than with bear hands I think!) and what I took for just run of the mill weeds was, in fact, large clumps of... STINGING NETTLE.
Heh. Ops
Never heard of the plant before, but I was weeding again yesterday (this time with gloves) and one of the weeds brush my leg and despite being a glancing blow at best it started to hurt. I posted the image of the plant to Facebook and someone there ID'd it.
So the moral of this story is wear gloves I guess 🤷♂️9 -

You see, growing up in the British countryside has advantages, at least it means you can identify nettles! Where nettles grow, if I remember rightly, dockleaves also grow close by. Dockleaves rubbed over nettle stings help to sooth them.

4.7 hot and sweaty miles this morning. I really shouldn't complain as it was no where close to what some of you are experiencing. This brings my total to 70.07 miles for the month. My goal is 80 but I leave for vacation on Saturday. I'm packing my running clothes and shoes so I should be able to make goal. Maybe it will be cooler by the time I return to the U.S.!5

I think so too, or at least I have a shared false memory with you. Either way, I am going to pay a bit more attention to these things growing in my yard!4 -

Another article on marathon cheating: https://getpocket.com/explore/item/meet-the-marathon-cheats?utm_source=pocket-newtab
This quote stuck out to me: “But what I couldn’t understand was: why had he done it?” I get it but I don't, you know?2 -
@RunsOnEspresso - good article. I really can't imagine anyone cheating in a marathon or a half or any other race for that matter and having a good reason for it. Even if you are running for charity and don't want to let them down... Well, honestly you should have trained more to finish cleanly even if it means walking and not getting a great time. I do feel bad for the woman who had to drop out but ran the last few miles (with permission) with her friend. I guess that is another reason not to go through the finish line, like they tell you if you go back after finishing, to run in with another runner.2

94.2/100 miles completed
I ran 6.26 miles this morning. It was a really nice run. It was one of those runs where you just feel like you can run forever. It was hot and humid, but somehow even though I wouldn't say the weather was nice, it was less unpleasant than it has been lately and I really enjoyed my run. I'm at 94.2 miles for August so I shouldn't have any trouble hitting my goal of 100 miles this month.
