Obese and Depressed

Hey, I’ve been feeling ill for the longest period time. It’s so hard for me to get out of a place where I sit but mostly bed (not due to weight) due to depression and I used be an extrovert but recently I avoid my friends and I hate going outside of my house because of the way I look and I’m embarrassed of the way I look. Right now I’m on 4 months break and everyday I eat and sleep or just lay on bed watch Netflix all day. I hate to move from bed, I really want to change my habits and lose weight I had all plans in my head but till now I’ve been only laying and rolling on bed. I’m afraid that this might lead to suicide, I’m curious to know if any of you are going through depression and how are you losing weight meanwhile fighting depression?

Before you lose weight you need to see a professional about your depression. That should be your first move and it is urgent. After you are mentally stable you can take on the stress of weight loss. Good luck and please don't delay.40

Aw, I'm so sorry to hear that depression is really hard to go through, I've experienced it myself and have found that though it doesn't instantly make me feel amazing I feel a little better if I do end up making plans and committing to them, as well as getting a lot of sunshine and picking at least one small, good thing to cling to each day. Even if that thing doesn't make me feel good it helps to know that I saw say, a really cute dog or made someone happy in that day even if I'm feeling awfully low. Remember you're never alone in this and suicide is never, ever the answer- that's coming from someone who has lost a close friend to it. Don't beat yourself up over your bad days or your perceived shortcomings, just start wherever you are and know your depression isn't your fault. Any small steps in the right direction are worth celebrating and crediting yourself for- even the fact you're here on MFP is proof you're trying. I'd suggest planning small, easily accomplish-able goals like a quick walk (even inside the house), lifting with household items (sometimes when I'm mega depressed I'll just lift books to kinda work out), and remember you can get through this.8

Just remember to take it slow and be patient to yourself! Sending lots of love and support! I know how hard it is to keep going when things feel so low but you can do it3

I second this, too. There are many resources to help with depression, don't try and go through it alone!7 -
Yes I have felt the same and still depressed but on medication now. You really need to see a doctor. It is a long road but you need to start somewhere. The weight right now is the last thing you should worry about4

This year has been the worst for me. In March my employer told me I was being made redundant leaving at the end of June and I continued for three months without knowing what was next for me. About two weeks before leaving, a job came around which came with an 8K pay raise and I took it thinking it would be great for my career. Four months in and I had gained a lot of weight (I'm now 117.9KG) and my mood had also changed. The job wasn't good at all, it was more demanding than i was expecting and I became depressed from stress and wanted to kill myself because of it all. I went to the Doctor and he signed me off work for two weeks, but instructed me to try and find myself and to give myself an objective before going back to work. He advised to pay attention to my diet and activity. I have taken these instructions on board and I plan on losing my weight and getting more active. For me it's taking baby steps one at a time.15

I sought help for my depression with a therapist before I began my health journey. A lot of times we're depressed because we over-eat and we over-eat because we're depressed, so you have to put a stick in the spokes of that wheel and break the cycle before you can actually move forward. There's online therapy if you don't want to go see someone in person, TalkSpace.com... I saw a therapist in person for a couple years and then went to TalkSpace when my schedule got too crazy to support an in-person appointment reliably.
It means a LOT that you've taken this first step to admitting there's a problem and it's only up from here! Find someone to talk to so you can learn more about what's holding you back... Good luck, my friend!

I lost my husband to ALS last year. After that, I was diagnosed with anxiety, depression and ptsd. I moped for a couple of months, living off of pizza and chinese take-out.
I woke up one morning and decided that I wanted to be healthier. I saw my doctor, got a prescription to help me, and got started.
I'm now down 30 pounds and my anxiety and depression symptoms have lessened.
I take it one day at a time. I set goals of the next 5 pounds so I'm always motivated.
Good luck with your journey!

Thank you sm luv , I’ve been feeling energetic nowadays but there are days where I just wanna binge eat and stay in bed but the only difference is that I know my limit now , if I fail a day I make it up by working hard for a week. In that sense I’m doing much better even with my depression. It’s like I’m distracted by weight loss so I have no time to overthink and so on 💜

Please consider seeing a professional who can help you! I have suffered with depression most of my life, but didn't know it until 4 years ago. Then it was another 3 years before my doctor was able to find the best medication for me. It's a long process, and one that is best to get started right away. Not every medication works for everyone. Therapy doesn't work for everyone. There is no treatment that is a "standard" for depression, especially the type that includes suicidal thoughts, as in your case.
Weight gain can be both a cause of and a side-effect of depression, but there is *always* (imho) an underlying issue that must be addressed. Once you start getting the depression in treatment, then your attempts to lose any weight that you want/need to will be more successful.
I tried losing weight many times in my life...but it wasn't until I forced some changes in my life that I was able to keep at it. I moved out of state, got a new job, got divorced (yes, a good thing!), started seeing a therapist, got a new medication, and am focusing my life on my son and myself. All of those changes were very hard to force (yes, force), but it was worth it for me.
If you feel that those suicidal thoughts are getting stronger, please reach out for help. The Association for the Prevention of Suicide is equipped and designed specifically to help people in crisis.3 -

Yess you know I thought it’s really cliché for people to say “ nothing is impossible “ . To be honest everything is possible if you want it. When you’re starting it’s the hardest thing ever but when you get the hang of it , you’ll thrive for more. I wish you all the best and thank you sm for your kind words 💜
