Unexplained weight gain

Hi All
I have lost almost 20lbs in 6 months. Then came my vacation. Then came my surge of more exercise. But instead of losing , i have started to gain weight. . I do more exercise eat normal but I am heavier by 2-3 lbs:(
Any idea what's goingnon?

it could be that some of the fat has turned into muscle and muscle does weigh more than fat does....the same happened to me and i was worried and disappointed but i kept on my diet and exercise routine and after a week or so i saw 5 pounds come off..so just keep going!0

Water retention? Did you eat more sodium on your vacation? That could be the culprit then.
Or maybe you've started putting on muscle. Have you been tracking measurements? (neck, chest, waist, hips). Maybe they're still going in the right direction and you've put on a bit of muscle?
I'm guessing here, but those were my first thoughts. Just keep going forward and it should settle down and behave again soon.0 -

Fat can NOT turn into muscle. It just CAN'T.
Muscle does NOT weigh more than fat. A pound is a pound is a pound. Muscle is denser, and takes up less space.0 -
My theory is that the hole that food goes into is smaller than the hole it comes out of.0

No but a 5 pound ream of paper would take up more space. Fat doesn't 'turn into' muscle but I don't think that's what she was saying. Fat is burnt off and used up and new muscle is created. Muscle does weigh more than fat. It is denser and a smaller amount of muscle will equal the same weight as a larger amount of fat. So if you were to replace the same size of fat with the same size of muscle; you would weigh more. Per cubic decimetre muscle weighs more than fat.0 -

Water retention is more likely.
Unless you're eating a ton of junk, and eating above your maintenance. Then you're probably just plain gaining weight.0 -
all muscle gained. It's that easy. Just do some pushups and stuff and BOOM gain 3 pounds of muscle in a week.

Yes, muscle weighs more than fat, assuming you're talking about the same volume. Of course a pound of anything weighs a pound, and anyone harping on that is just picking apart syntax. A given volume of muscle weighs more than the same volume of fat. This is well known. Jumping all over the poster for a phrasing error without providing some useful information in return is not productive.0

Just to clear something up:
Fat does not turn INTO muscle. You can lose fat and gain muscle, but one does not become the other.
It is HARD to gain pounds of muscle. It will take way more than 1 week to gain a pound of muscle. If you gain 3 lbs exercising it was probably water retained, a poop in your system that you couldn't feel yet, undigested food etc. Not muscle.
Muscle only weighs more than fat in volume, for example 1 square foot of muscle would weigh more than 1 square foot of fat.0 -
2 or 3 pounds? really? concerned about that? It's normal weight fluctuation... 10-15 pounds, not so much. relax, eat clean and you'll see it'll slide off.0

OK, lets see if we can clear this up....
1) A pound of muscle and a pound of fat both weigh a pound.
2) A pound of muscle and a pound of fat by "volume" muscle will weigh more.
3) 50 cubic inches of fat and 50 cubic inches muscle is still 50 cubic inches of mass.
4) 50 cubic inches of fat will weigh less than 50 cubic inches of muscle because there is more mass to muscle. Fat cells are less compact that muscle cells. Muscle cells are more compact so they have more mass per volume.
So kiddies, what does this tell us???
Does muscle weigh more than fat? Sure, where you are talking about mass per volume. But does a pound of fat weigh more than a pound of muscle, no. They are still both a pound..

To the OP:
Your unexplained weight gain can be from a couple of things.
1) Water retention from higher sodium levels. (Most likely from eating over vacation)
2) Water retention from working out more. Muscles will hold onto water while they repair themselves.
3) A combination of muscle mass gain from working out and water retention.0 -

OKay maybe TMI but is it that time of the month for you or a few days before? This ALWAYS happens to me! right up until the day before I am done for the month I pack on 2 lbs of water weight and when that part of my cycle is over I shd it.....0

By volume, muscle weighs more than fat. A square inch of muscle weighs more than a square inch of fat.0

Pretty much everyone has covered it. It's not muscle turning into fat. That will never happen. It could be a number of things like normal weight fluctations, TOM, high sodium, water retention.0
