Let it GO! Decluttering (simplifying) your life of (people, places or things) success stories?

@NewLIFEstyle4ME
Welcome back and congrats on your maintenance and even losing some wt.! Keep up the good work.
I understand the need of walking away from social media, even MFP (which is the only on line "social" that I belong to). It is very time consuming and takes time away from doing more important things. I need to exert more control and just log my food and review the postings in the group that I belong to, and forget about the rest. Unless I had posted in this thread.
I got a new dresser for one of the guest rooms (the previous is going to my niece's house), so I had to organize all the stuff that goes inside the unit and throw away what ever is not longer needed. Almost done. It looks good, it is something that needed to be done and I am happy that I accomplish that task.
Now is time to step away from the PC and continue with my chores. Glad that you are doing well, I'm wishing you a nice and productive weekend.

THANK you for posting here--you inspired me and encouraged me BIG time with your post/words!
Hey gang--what's happening with ya! I hope all is better than or at least well with you all!!!!
Ever since dodea48 posted that message, it's been on my heart BIG time to also simply my life by TAKING control of myself/my treasure (which is my time) in regards to social media, so that's why I've been MIA
(if anyone noticed ), just to give myself mind/soul decluttering and it's utterly amazing how saying NO to myself in relatively unproductive and/or areas in my life that, although seemingly good, but that can tend to become, ummmm...taking too much of my time/energy and life/POWER over me/my self-control. SO, that's what I've been up to and let me tell ya, like weight blastification AND decluttering...making myself simplify my life/time by taking mega breaks AWAY from social media and computer time and getting oot and aboot and fellowshipping with real (personal) people and getting some much wanted and needed sunshine and fresh air vs. spending so much time on my butt, on the "puter" has and is making a totally difference and is so much better for me. Also, I've been reading "real books" and writing on paper and with my beloved gel pens sooooo much more (like I used to in the "olden days") and I LOVE it--it's so refreshing and freeing and is doing something GOOD to my mind, body and soul that being on the computer/devices too much does/steals/stagnates/opens me up to obsession and just yuck in/thru/to me. Just as slow and steady wins the race for/in/thru/to me--so does saying NAH, NOPE, UH-UH, get outta here addition and compulsion--I'm in control of me, my time and my appetites, period.
That said...I'm now in the 130's as well...I'm now 139.4 (but my ticker isn't working for some reason) YES, it's only .6lbs since my last lost in early September:
Last recorded weight: 140 lbs on 9/05/2019 (my goal weight was 140lbs AND YA GIRL DID THAT THANG, but I just reduced it to 135lbs (hmmmmph, seeing how long it's taking me to reach my previous ultimate goal weight of 137lbs, I say WITH JOY I'll make it 135lbs). I'm still rocking sizes 6/8 from my larges of 22w--so that's so far 80.4lbs blasted to the place where the sun will NEVER shine. So, that's big ole unwanted/unhealthy/unattractive pounds and ounces and inches galore GONE forever.
Okay, here's receipts:
Good to see you New! Congrats on more weight loss and setting a new goal! As always, you're an inspiration.2 -
Just popping in to say I’ve gotten rid of three big pieces of antique furniture that were smelly and useless and I hated them! Replaced with new exercise equipment . Okay that’s all, have a great day!11

Had to sent my sewing machine for servicing last Friday. So worked on the basement storage shelves. Some of the stuff hasn't been touched since we moved in 4 years ago. Moved everything off all the shelves so we could clean under and behind. Took a load to donate to the thrift store, another bag of fabric ready to go to the senior center and a couple items moved to the curb. Have my 33 year old daughters dollhouse on Facebook to see if anyone wants if not will go to the thrift store this weekend. Also have two bags for my daughter to go through.
I also went through my Christmas fabric and cut out stockings to make when my machine returns. I like to have some on hand for those I hear about that may not get anything for Christmas and any leftover will go to a Christmas Eve giveaway in our town.
My daughter recently brought me a new set of measuring cups and spoons so I sorted out my old sets and sent those off to the thrift store. Also cleaned the dish section of my cupboards.
It makes it easier to focus on one area at a time and not have to tackle the whole house at once.

My biggest issue has not better with physical clutter, but with digital clutter. Over the past few days I spent a few hours cleaning up my personal email inbox - either sorting into an appropriate folder or trashing. I went through about 5,000 emails and now my inbox is empty! It feels so much better and I feel like I can actually better engage with my emails now.13
-
Hope everyone is doing well. My decluttering is mostly on hold while I'm working, but am trying to at least keep things maintained.5

My decluttering, cleaning, organizing and throwing away a bunch of old stuff and papers, have been going on for the last couple of days. The garage is a never ending chore since my husband doesn't like to throw things away, and doesn't help with the cleaning either.
I have shredded countless pages of documents and general papers that were more than 10 years old. I have no more room in my recycle trash bin. I filled up a large plastic bag and I will take large items to Office Depot for shredding. I know that I will have to pay, but I need to get rid of all the stuff once and for all.
I also have three paper bags full of books that I not longer need to take to the local library this week. I organized one of the furniture in the garage where I keep gardening stuff, and I threw away a lot of unnecessary junk.
I will take a rest for few days, until the garbage is collected.
@snoo61 Good for you for keeping things under control. Good luck with work.
@RelCanonical I have done digital decluterring too. I think that it is easier than getting rid of possessions because you just dump the electronic garbage in the "trash," press delete and it is all gone. No need to fill up trash bins or take trips to the dump. I need to do more clean up in some of my personal excel and word folders too. Thank you for the reminder and the inspiration.6 -
I love this thread. I went through my dresser drawers this weekend and got rid of a huge trash bag of clothes. Just taking it to the recycle as it is trash. Embarassing how I cannot throw stuff out. Weekend before I made my son go through his bathroom and throw out empties or stuff he did not use. Also found three pairs of scissors. No wonder I can never find a pair. I need to keep on this path. Life is so much simplier when you do not have useless stuff lying around.9
-
Straightened out my kitchen pantry, threw out a few things and just generally organized, looks so much better. Things were hanging from shelves and it was a mess.
At work cleared out and tossed 75% of the stuff in one of the sink cabinets, expired and not needed and yuck.
Both of those probably took 5 - 10 min max.5 -
Last week, I went through my clothes closet and cabinet again. It is never ending process to keep things tidy. I also am trying to streamline my clothes purchases. I really feel best in slimming black clothing so I am going to purge all the colorful good intention clothing I have bought (even if the item is pretty) and donate them.8

I’ve found that what helps me most is decluttering just a little bit each day; its peaceful and calming, while creating big results over time 😊9
-
Hi all, I'm still kicking. About another month of work before I can get back to regular decluttering. Hope all of you are doing well!5
-
I've been on a roll; just organizing here and there nearly everyday , overall it is making a difference. The apartment feels lighter. My only problem is what to do with the things I saved for eBay selling but just never get around to it. I may just donate the whole box without looking in it.

Hello everybody. I was thinking in bringing this thread a life, and @snoo61 and @RubyRed427 beated me to it. Thank you ladies!
I finally got to work in the office stationary closet. I did a lot of cleaning and shredding, and my two DILs got a lot of hanging folders and clean papers that they can use at school. They are both teachers. The closet looks much cleaner and organized, but I still have the upper shelf to take care off. I am short so I will need to get a ladder to tackle that chore.
I also cleaned two storage furnitures in the garage and last week Habitat for Humanity came to pick up them up. Things are looking better but having a big house to take care off doesn't give me much time free for extra organizing.
My kids and their families are not coming for Christmas this year and we may not put the Christmas tree up since there will be no gifts under it. Everything will be mailed. I was thinking in using that extra free time for de-clutting and organizing the garage a little bit more. It would be a holiday gift to myself .
Glad that you ladies are plugging along. Good job and congrats to all of us!.5 -
I'm letting 'Christmas Go' this year...and probably every year after that too.
I was in the mall the other day and it totally made me depressed. SO MUCH STUFF! I couldn't help think most of stuff bought will be in a landfill within the year and what happens to all the crap not sold? And just the amount of plastic bags people had from the stores they purchased their stuff with will absolutely be in the landfill within 24 hours...
Made me sad for our world...and my soul!
I'll be decluttering my holiday this year...I'll be baking my gifts this year and making cards with the decorations I already have (I do have a 'crafty' box full of stuff). I will, however, be purchasing wine to go with my homemade goodies....and that will be that.
I live in a highrise condo and see all the garbage people don't recycle in our building. It's crazy. Literally just today, I saw a huge pile of plastic and cardboard boxes sitting by our 'landfill' garbage...the recycle bins are just a few feet away too...
I feel like I will actually enjoy this season this year
If I do decide to purchase some gifts...It'll be from locale, little shops. It's a struggle beyond belief in my city right now...little shops are closing it seems like every day.14 -
I agree @PAPYRUS3. I don't feel quite so bad about the plastic bags, I recycle all I can, and also our church has started making mats for the homeless crocheted out of "plarn" (plastic bags cut into strips). I have gotten alot better with recycling since our past hometown made it mandatory & I still do it now where we live. Plus excess clothing & stuff gets donated to a thrift store instead of the landfill. I cringe putting stuff in the garbage in daughters town where recycling is not as convenient. We usually only exchange gifts with kids & gkids, so the kids get 1/4 beef & the gkids are getting older, so instead of a bunch of junk, they get gift cards & one package to unwrap. & probably a book, too, to encourage reading.
It really helps my mindset to be following a few minimalization blogs. But need to practice it more, lol.7 -
I agree with the above comments about Christmas. I wish I could be more of a "minimalist” around the holidays but there is a lot of push back from the family, since we still have younger/preteens grandchildren. However, in the last few years I have asked the older grandchildren and my own kids for their Christmas wish list, and I only get them what they really want, but not all of it.
Most of the time, I will give them a gift card for the store of their choice or money, and maybe a small wrapped gift to put under their Christmas tree. They can buy whatever they want and need after the holidays, and they will probably get it cheaper due to the after Christmas sales. We have asked our kids for gift cards for us, either from a restaurant or to Home Depot or Lowell’s since I used them to buy plants for my garden.
My husband and I still exchange gift but they are very practical. I get a facial for my birthday in December and a massage for Christmas, or if I do need something special a gift card. My husband likes gift cards from the barber shop and sometimes I get him an Amazon gift card or one for a local restaurant.
I know that many people find the giving of gift card or money cold and not personal, but I love them and I think that they are better than gifting something that people doesn’t want or needs to be exchanged.
We do have a good recycling program in town. Our garbage collection company provides and extra bin for all recyclable items and I donate a lot of unwanted items, including clothing, to local resale boutiques. I only dump clothing that are not longer usable. Is good to read and see that many people are doing their best to keep the environment clean and safe.

Christmas has downsized dramatically for me. Put up a manger, no tree (excuse is the dog might try to pee on it), stopped cards years ago, and really only do gifts for the grandkids that live near. There's nothing anyone needs, and everyone already has so much, the new just blends into all the stuff. So I prefer dh to do something for me, or fix something I need done, an action. Sometimes he'll buy a bag of mangoes (which I could stuff myself with but try not to). So what do you give dh when he's the one saying we have too much and get rid of it? Not interested in doing or going anywhere - that's what am trying to move the grandkids toward - experiences.3

There is something I love about seeing what others think I will like, but Christmas for us is of necessity small (we have one small child, partner has 1 sibling (who also has a small family) and my whole family are on another continent) so it's maybe 4 gifts total being opened. And I'm genuinely interested in what comes, but that could be because we keep things so small.
(Possibly worth mentioning that our waste - either recyclable or not - is considerably less than most of our neighbours. Walking on the night before curbside pickups is always a bit eye-opening to me. But we're also huge Freecyclers - both wanted and on offer (mostly on offer), and if Freecycle doesn't want it, it goes to the charity shop.)
And when I do get things for others, they are from our local shops. We are having the same problem of shops closing at an appalling rate.
I call decluttering 'winnowing' (from this story) and while I don't do it in the way the Mrs Schuping does, I do like a good thinning of the stuff every now and again.2 -
I've been doing my "Gifting" differently for awhile now.
Instead of materialistic gift, I give EXPERIENCE. Last year, I took my kids to LA and stayed with my friends. Gave them an opportunity to see LA and on Xmas day, gave them a ticket to Universal Studios. We played together all day and spent the day making memories... The year before was a BIG trip to Hawaii. We have all these experiences together and pictures from the trip. That to me is a GIFT that we keep 4ever (without clutter!)<33 -
Love to hear of how you and your family are celebrating the season. I too love the idea of 'experiences'...that's what we will remember...not the slipper socks 20 years from now lol!
Also, my niece just emailed the family how she is not wanting any gifts this year for her nor her husband. She's hosting a Christmas 'potluck' and wishes that the family bring a dish.
Not sure what the rest of my family thinks about all this...but I'm glad I'm not 'alone' in this change in our family!4 -
We are moving the end of the December, this month. Our landlord is moving back into their house. It is their old family home that they have had for generations. I hate moving and we are going from a 4 bedroom house to a 2 bedroom condo. My husband insists we need to rent a storage unit. I am struggling with working and trying to pack and declutter. I was hoping we would have more time so I could get rid of enough stuff to be comfortable in the new place so we would not have the expense of a storage unit and why do we need to store things if we are not using them.
I must admit that it is hard getting rid of some things but it helps when I know the items are going to places where someone is likely to need and use our cast-off items.
What do I do with our broken chair? What do I do with the twin mattress that our son-in-law brought over to store in our garage temporarily?
I am stressed out about all of this. I am thankful for the opportunity to post this. It is more than I can handle and I need order and neatness to function.
5 -
@GreenValli Ask for help! Moving it self is stressful. And to move in December is even more stressful!
Part with things that are not usable. Broken chair, Old things you haven't used in 2 years. If you didn't fix or use in the past 2 years, you don't need it. If your inlaws brought things to store, call them to pick it up or it get's thrown out. Maybe there are things they want from your "not using pile".
Anything that still has life but you or your husband doesn't need, call the Donation pickup center. https://pickupplease.org/
My parents moved from a house to a condo and had to downsize a lot. It was emotional and VERY HARD. But after 10 years, they don't seem to miss it. It's a new way of living. You don't need that much. It's LIGHTER.
LESS IS MORE good luck9 -
I’ve been doing a Christmas cleaning this month. I only have one big Ikea bag of wedding stuff left, I started with 4. Everything was either donated or sold, so nothing but literal trash (scraps of fabric and wine corks we used for decoration that started to smell) went to waste. I have one bag and two drawers left to go through and sell, which I’ll do right after the New year, when I’m guessing next year’s brides will go into full bridal mode and start scouring for stuff. My wedding was in August so this stuff has been sitting here for a while, but at least there’s progress.
Today I also reorganized my workout clothes, and I definitely do NOT need any new stuff until I need a smaller size. The only thing I’m considering is new clean running shoes to use on a treadmill instead of outdoors.
I also cleaned the pantry today. Threw out a lot of stuff that had gone bad (crackers really do go stale when there’s a half-opened box sitting there for a year). I’m taking some stuff to the office that’s still good and unopened, but nobody in my house wants to eat.
Every year, I’ve bought a bunch of christmas chocolate boxes and gift-wrapped them all, using them as a decoration until I opened them on Christmas Eve and feasted on all the chocolate. I live in a 2-person household and we used to have probably 10 boxes of chocolate. This year, I think I’ll limit the amount to 3-5, max. I also want to buy less physical presents in general and focus on experiences, for both myself and others. The only exceptions so far have been a Christmas tree ornament for my cousin’s 2-year-old daughter, and presents to donate to a Christmas Tree charity. Local companies participate widely and donations are gathered in our office also, and the presents go to children and teenagers who are customers of the child protective services or other social services, so before Christmas the charity and social workers go through all the donations and decide who gets which gift. I bought three gifts to teenagers, and I have zero issues with buying more stuff instead of experiences when it’s a donation to a child or teenager who would otherwise not get any presents.4 -
{{{{{ WAVING a big ole joy-filled Hi!!! }}}}}}
It's been a while, I've been MIA on purpose...I've been wonderfully busy loving my life, my neighbor(s)/people (as I do myself) and living, learning and enjoying everything life/God's Holy Spirit is offering me daily...the so called good, the so-called bad and the so-called ugly, welcoming EVERYTHING coming my way daily, no matter what!
Both the decluttering and maintaining/weight blastification departments has/have/is going well. I started this thread 2 big ole years ago, around this time and by the Grace & Mercy and faith of and in God and purposely CHOOSING to be DAILY living a power-filled, (ever/DAILY seeking love, humility and patience with myself and others) haven't completely arrived YET, but on my way in style, grace and love--I've accomplished and am accomplishing ALL of my dreams of living a more grateful, content, godly, simple, wise, true, strong, mentally, physically, spiritually, emotionally, financially and every other "ally" life. So GLAD to report that. Speaking of report--here's some updates on my weight:
Last recorded weight: 139.4 lbs on 11/02/2019
Last recorded weight: 138.6 lbs on 12/14/2019
FOREVER blasted away .8lbs in 42 days...I'll take it with JOY-BOOM!
NewLIFEstyle4ME 1 hour ago
lost 0.8 lbs since last weighing in! Newlifestyle4me's lost 81.2 lbs so far.
Here's some pics of me in a size 6 ( I still wear sizes 6/8 and SO THRILLED to report--YAY!!!!!) and me inside one pant leg of the size 20w jeans-219.8lbs (20w isn't my highest clothes size...size 22w is and I no longer have any of that size around--THANK YOU Jesus ) to today 138.6lbs...This took me 7+ LONG years long-term, 9 mos to 1 year short-term to get down to size. I've still got a wee bit more to go, my stomach isn't washboard flat AT ALL, but it's slowly but surely getting flatter and flatter and I'm THRILLED, because my stomach used to look like I was not 9, but 18 month pregnant, like I had 3 or 4 or MORE HUGE watermelons inside me or something--my stomach was so big, it was super unhealthy-dangerously BIG and just YUCK, so this little hump on the pics with me in one leg of the size 20w is nothing less than a MIRACLE compared to how it used to look just 6 months ago--BOOM!
Here I am in size 6 jeans (my FAVORITE)
I HOPE and pray that everyone is doing/feeling/being well or at least better! THANK YOU to everyone who has contributed to this life changing thread--I LOVE you guys and couldn't WOULDN'T have done it without you ALL.

Wow, this is inspiring and reminds me of a saying in Spanish that says, "The Good Life is not the most, the richest or the finest. The Good Life is that which is adequate." (sounds prettier in Spanish) This is so true! Whether in food choices or stuff choices, we only need that which will enrich our lives!
Sounds like a good new year's focus: Get rid of the stuff I don't want so I can find the stuff I do want.4 -

Thank you Weatherking! My husband and I together went through a bunch of things last night. It helped me deal with all the "mountains". We accomplished quite a bit, but still have alot to do. The donation pick-up was something I had not thought of. I have been taking boxes of items every time I go to the gym (Goodwill is in same shopping center) but my small car does not hold too much.

I know what you mean. I've never been a fan of Christmas for personal reasons, and I feel even more "over it" this year. We have our tree up (it's a 2-foot tree, since that's what we have closet space for). We had a small and simple Thanksgiving dinner that took about 90 minutes to make. Not sure if we will do much for Christmas. We might even go out to eat instead. I didn't ask for any gifts and haven't purchased any yet. I'll get something for my husband if he asks for something specific. We're childfree so that takes a lot of the "keeping up with the Joneses" pressure out of the holidays.
It just seems like most holidays in the US just turn into reasons to stress people out on their limited days off. They feel obligated to buy a bunch of stuff, spend hours cooking, spend time around relatives they may not even necessarily like, etc. It feels like it's about control more than anything else. And few people think about what effect this is having on the environment, and whether any of this is remotely necessary or even enjoyable.2 -

You are such a sweet, caring person. I try to recycle everything and tell my kids I'm trying to save the world. No one person can do it alone, obviously. Lazy people that can't walk an extra few hundred feet to a recycle area disgust me. Last year we found baby toys, good baby toys out at the curb waiting for trash pickup. Seriously there wasn't anything wrong with them, nothing! They are in my house and my little guy plays with them all the time. Geez, donate them! Even if they're dirty, someone would be happy to clean them up and use them and save money, especially this time of year. I don't understand people!3
