Welcome to the MFP Community! This is a discussion we have created to welcome the new people in our community, to have a discussion where new folks can meet one another, AND ask questions of existing members.
We are not going to do an adopt-a-noob discussion this year so we encourage our awesome veterans to hang out in the discussion if you are interested in helping answer questions our noobs need to know.

Hello - Day one and I've gone over by 19 calories but all things considered I think that's pretty good60

Hello! I am a newbie for sure! I was testing the app out prior to Christmas to try and understand what it was about and what it had to offer. I am sure there are many things about it I have not discovered and used to its full potential. However, it is serious time... 2020 is the year I will be having surgery to help with my weightloss and this is a program they ask us to use. So I am here to learn, give support, find support, to listen and anything else that is out there. Thanks everyone ♥71

It may be late for some to see this, but I'm volunteering to guide just 2 people this year because of my massive clientele base. You can message me with specific reasons why I should pick you. I'll let the 2 know by Sunday the 5th and we start the 6th.

Hello everyone. I have just started on myfitnesspal. Trying to finally get back to a healthy lifestyle. Would like to lose 40 pounds and feel better about my self overall. Have a couple of injuries over the last 2 years and feel good enough to start taking everything a little slow now. Needs lots of motivation.15

Nineteen cals over isn't a big deal. Remember, that's only a small amount of your total deficit for the day. IMHO, within 20-50 cal either side of calorie goal is perfect4 -
Alright I'm working on this logging thing.6

Ok people. Today is the day I start my journey. Lost 44 pounds on keto but not sustainable. Gained almost all of it back. Need a new strategy.7

Welcome all of you. My advice is to take it slowly, be patient, weight loss is not a fast process so don't expect to lose the same amount every week. Read the stickies, pay attention to the advice given by the longer serving members they have are a treasure trove of great information and tips on how to make the process easier.
If you are going to post on the forums it is always a good idea to use the search function to see if anyone has posted on the subject before. You may find answers to your question without having to post.
Don't be surprised if people disagree with you on the forums, we all start off lacking in some knowledge about diet and nutrition, it is not personal, everyone will have different ideas on the best way to lose weight, some advice will be good some will not. Take the good stuff and make it your own, ignore the fad/weird stuff.
To lose weight you need to be in a calorie deficit, there are many many ways of creating a deficit and it is ok to play around with different ways of eating to find the one that suits you. Some people eat low carb, some do intermittent fasting, some eat plant based, some are vegan and some are high protien. Most of us eat the foods we enjoy in quantities that fit our calorie goals. Any of these options are ok if they are sustainable for you.
You don't need to eliminate whole food groups to lose weight unless you have a medical condition that means you can't eat certain foods.
The process works but you must give it time. You can weigh every day or once a week or once a month, or not at all and just go by measurements or how your clothes fit. All of that is ok.
MFP is an amazing source of information and a very useful tool to help you on your way. Make friends, join groups, take up challenges or just log your food and not interact at all if that suits you.
This is your site and you can use it in any way you choose.
Most importantly don't give up. You can do this.

Hello day 2 here8

Hello new on this site, just wondering does everyone here just have the original MFP? And is it effective on its own? Or did everyone upgrade to the new and improved
MFP the site keeps advertising for a monthly free?2 -
Hey guys! I’m new and can use friends and motivation..dont even know where to start 😔😖🤯17

Personally I have never seen a need to have any more than the free site. It gives me all the tools I need to lose weight. But some people prefer a more in depth look at their nutrition and the prime membership gives you that I believe.
My advice start with the free membership and review your needs after you have been using it for a while.7 -
Hey guys! I’m new and can use friends and motivation..dont even know where to start 😔😖🤯
Start by reading the stickies at the top of the forums.
Enter your stats, set a reasonable weight loss 1-2lbs per week depending on how much weight you have to lose. Weigh everything you eat on a food scale, log everything as accurately as possible, hit your daily calorie limit, eat back some or all of your excercise calories, once you get into that habit you can then tweak your way of eating as needed to make sure you are getting decent nutrition and that the food you eat is enjoyable and sustainable for you.
Most importantly take your time, be patient, weight loss is a marathon not a sprint and you will get more sustainable results if you don't try to lose too fast.
The forums are full of really good information, tips, recipes and advice that will help you on your way.

Hello everyone! 👋
I'm only day 4 into the app, and still getting my head round it!
After losing nearly 30lb of weight a while back following sw, I've put nearly half back on 🤦🏼♀️
So now I'm looking at getting healthier, happier and stronger, rather than just dieting! 😊

Heya this is my day 2 and i am trying to understand about the exercise and adding calories. Can someone explain this to me? I did slimming world and lost 5stone but i am unable to do it now so hoping calorie counting is gonna be better.0

HI
Been using the app for a little while now but new to forum community. I'm looking for friends here so I don't feel so alone on this journey. I recently had open heart surgery, Sept, 4 2019, and needed a way to track so I can knock some lbs back off. Was overweight before surgery [180ish], came out of the hospital at around 162 and now am back up to 180. I've been roller coasting for several weeks now [lose 2-3 then gain it back] and ready to head down vs back-n-forth. Any advice/help would be appreciated. I know that it is ultimately up to me to do the right thing, eat right, exercise etc... but it would be nice to have some folks to motivate me along cause the fam sure ain't helpin'.
Thanks,
David4 -

Happy Saturday! I'm on day 5 and doing well - just need to up my movement. I was a long time WW user, and tracking dipped me into some disordered eating patterns and thoughts. So I am nervous to get back into it. I've been using another program to diet deprogram, but I've gained 40 pounds and my back is killing me. I need to lose some fat off my frame. I am trying to up my water intake, vegetable intake, and daily movement to start. And eventually to balance my meals so that they are satisfying and I'm not starving for the next one - which is when I break down and make choices that aren't aligned with my fat loss goals. Any advice or thoughts from longer-term users would be greatly appreciated.0
