Near here a woman shot 3 people, hit another with fists because they wouldn’t let her inside McDonald’s dining room.5

Haven't been out of the house since work on Sunday. Today bought my grandma some bedding flowers and dropped them outside her place (and myself some wine😅) all good.
Then walking home five young things maybe 16-ish on bikes think it's a great joke to go by and all purposefully cough in my direction because I'm wearing a mask and they weren't.
Well the last one didn't cough. I stuck my foot out in front of his bike so he had to slow down or crash, he was a bit too preoccupied to cough😒 they're all lucky there was traffic on the road beside us or I would have crashed the second guy and let them pile up for being *kitten*.
Came home and showered off and my backpack reeks of Lysol. Fun day... wish my city had a number to call on *kitten* like that.
Edit: I'm just so tired of dealing with stupid people...12 -

Virtual hugs and sympathy!
I can't even imagine. High probability that the people who are most concerned (about themselves and others) are more likely to stay home as much as possible, and those who are not as concerned are out ramming around on their usual schedule.
The implication, in a statistical sense, would be that people like you in "meet the public" jobs have a higher percentage of the out of touch or unconcerned (or hostile, in some cases) people in the selected group you meet each day. That's got to be really tough.
There are people who care, who are doing the right things, and some of them come into your store, of course. But lots of those types are out and about less often, so you don't get to actually see and experience them nearly as often.
I can see how that would have an effect, not a great one, on how the world looks from your view.
Hang in there: All I can say (from the rarely-left perimeters of home, because I'm one of the lucky ones) is that I appreciate you and others like you, who are out doing what needs to be done to keep things going, and doing it as safely and courteously as you can in current circumstances. Thank you!9 -

Statistically, logically, I know there are a lot more people behaving than not but it is draining to deal with those that aren't. I know a lot of my regulars who are older ladies and gentlemen I barely see now because they are staying home and that actually makes me happy because I know they're trying to stay safe. Some days it just gets to me a lot more than others.
Today was actually really good mentally, which was why I went out walking, right up until those little jerks pulled that stunt. I got to see my grandparents for more than the few minutes of dropping off groceries (from the end of the driveway) and wow my grandma does puppy eyes like you would not believe when she's trying to guilt trip me into a hug or staying for a cup of tea. She's having a hard time with all this too so I came back to her carrying a 24flat of impatiens -- so when she told me, again, she was tired of having to wait for hugs and tea I told her yes she had an abundance of impatience😅
I know it's ridiculous to let everything affect me up and down like this but I've found it a lot harder to keep on an even keel with all this going on -- your comment actually really made my day better so thank you for taking the time to leave it.
I guess life is just like this though. The good and the bad rolled together into one and I'll have to take the days as they come -- but I'll admit if I see those young idiots again I'm going to give in to the impulse to kick their bikes as they go by😒8 -

Carry a cane. Pretend you need it. When the moment comes . . . .
Kidding. Really. I am. I swear. Kinda?
You seem like a lovely person. Don't let the world beat that out of you just now, the world needs all the lovely people it can get.
I saw a post on Facebook, where a family made a thing with a giant clear plastic sheet (like Visqueen or something), and arm-holes where they taped in clear trash bags, so they could socially-isolated hug their . . . I forget, granny, or old auntie, or something like that . . . on some special occasion, out in her yard. Touching, and heart-breaking, all at once.
The impatiens gift was really nice: It'll keep reminding her all summer that you love her.
Again, thank you for doing what you do.6 -

I'm old, so having a cane wouldn't be out of place, even if I don't need it for anything other than tripping the morons or poking at anyone who comes too close.
Staying home as much as possible. Only go out twice a month for a grocery or drug store run. Keeping myself busy with gardening and 'house stuff.' There's always 'house stuff.'
Thanks to everyone who faces the public daily and whose service makes our lives a bit more normal. Even when it isn't.6 -
Same Crowder lady came in earlier this morning. Stood around 4.5 feet back instead of 3. 🤔should I just consider this improvement and not push it? To be fair that first marker is probably closer to 7 feet back than 6 - thats the one the guys always comment/argue on.2

Don't know how well this photo comes thru. This is a Toronto paper. I'm a couple hours drive away from there. Bunch of idiots all mashed together in a park. I pointed it out to a regular customer thinking he'd find it as stupid as I did to see so many people together. Normally he chats with whoever is in. Long story short his opinion is
----
well it's their choice (to gather) Its my choice too I'm tired of all the fearmongering in the papers. Its ridiculous all blown out of proportion. No people under 20 have died (clarified to well here in canada) so it's fine. Etc. Etc. Etc. And-- Its just a flu.
I... didn't even have any words. Like how??? Ok Canada is doing "good" with flattening the curve all through the provinces. This is Ontario. We have one of the highest total counts of positive tests per province but it's been a steady rate of cases per day for weeks. A steady rate is good. We have a soft reopen of some parks. And everyone here what? Forgot how Quebec had an explosion of cases and needed military help to supply psw health care personnel???
I just needed to share my sheer incredulity at this. The nerve that because no kids died /yet/ equates to Its all blown out of proportion.
Hello Quebec sorry you had to lead by example. Sorry we're apparently too stupid to learn from it.11 -
Whenever I see pictures like that, of people congregating in great numbers, my thoughts go to 'wonder how many will come to regret that in about 2 weeks? and how many new positives/deaths will emerge again?'
Our state of Vermont, is small and rural, 2 reasons I think we don't have the spread that many do. And I'd sure love to see it stay that way.3 -
Is anyone else seeing a reduction in people using masks lately? It seems to coincide with things starting to softly reopen and that scares me. Grocery stores, gas station/convenience stores, nurseries.....people seem to be getting way too comfortable again. It's bound to come back and bite us in our derrieres.5

I haven't noticed whether there's more or less people wearing them but historically yes its gonna bite us. There's evidence that we will get more than one wave and the next will probably be worse.
Maybe it's because there's been nicer weather now so there's simply the same people wearing masks but more stay at home people are now out and about without them🤷♀️1 -
No decline in masks where I am. They are required for shopping anyway here, and they seem to be increasingly normalized. I think it's not all that surprising that in more rural or less densely populated areas, especially without any kind of mask requirement, and with few cases (looking at the numbers, VT has had less than a thousand, only 25 are hospitalized, and only 54 deaths), that many people wouldn't think they were necessary and would be less concerned, even though for the most part wearing a mask seems like an easy enough thing to do (I still have issues with my glasses fogging up and when exercising outside on a warm day they are unpleasant, so merely social distancing if you take it seriously seems like a legitimate option to me then).

I fit the protective screens on tills as part of my job. I think it depends on what part of the country your in. In london people seem to be wearing more masks than any other part.5

I have the glasses fogging issue too. It's contrary to habit but Don't push your glasses up. Let them rest further down your nose, lens' edges over or almost over the edge of the mask where it sits on your nose. If you let them sit further out from your face on the edge of the mask they don't fog up like usual.4 -
I will try that.0

Baby wipes have zero anti-bacterial properties. They're NOT a replacement at all for hand sanitizer. They're just water and perfume. Read the ingredients people.3

Most baby wipes contain a detergent, and detergents/soaps break the virus' coating, deactivating it. For this reason, i add a little dishwashing liquid to hand sanitizer.3 -

Since a virus is not a bacterium . . . I don't think an anti-bacterial is exactly what you're looking for here, either.7 -

They are a stop gap measure for not being able to wash your hands at best though any type of wet wipe would work.
It's literally just wiping a portion of whatever contaminants are there off your hands and throwing it in the trash. It doesn't mean your hands would be clean/decontaminated they'd just be cleaner than they were.
People went a bit crazy with buying any type of wet wipe when this all got going but I guess a lot of people thought baby wipe would be easy on their hands🤷♀️1 -
You are refreshing, I find some cashiers chatty...and in U.S. we have self check out stations as well..and some of the clerks that run those come up to you and talk and don't practice social distancing. Right now.. I say don't talk unless someone has a question. I know it goes against all the training of the past..but without a mask..talking spreads the virus. If everyone wore a mask and tried to social distance..we wouldn't have a problem. but you'll find people adamant about not wearing a mask..and some argue the virus is not serious and overblown. Those people are scary.
...like the guys in my husbands business who got lazy and didn't wear masks the past few weeks in the warehouse.....now one of their son's who came in to help has the virus..and all those macho guys are sweating it out ... waiting for their test results to come back. And there's an off chance.. I have been exposed too. I've stayed home..wear a mask the few times I go out ..wash my hands like crazy and do everything right. It just takes one idiot..5 -
I guess this is a call back to my original post. Things have definitely progressed since then.
To note: My province is doing well. Ontario is seeing lower case number everywhere except around Toronto and its direct neighbours where they are seeing higher numbers and while I'm near Toronto I'm not that near thank goodness. That means the social distancing/ cleaning/ masks/ stressing the *kitten* out is working. Keep it up people😂
I did indeed make myself more cloth masks to use at work not just grocery shopping. Work decided a while back to supply the surgical blue and white masks for at work. I was wearing mine for weeks before work supplied any.
Work did eventually get us larger plexiglass shields in front of the counter so it's not so nerve wracking when people want to stand and chat. I do have people ask me why I'm wearing a mask behind the shield that protects me and I explain to them it's because when they put their items under the shield on the counter for me to scan I'm leaning over all their stuff so it's to protect them/all their stuff not me.
Shooing people out definitely goes against the customer service spiel where you have to be welcoming but we have a limit on the number of people in store so people can't just stand around forever and we have to kinda hurry some along.
Funnily enough that post was back in March and I asked that people please sign their lottery tickets at home because 'i can only clean the pens so often' as they are a hightouch surface. Just a few weeks ago mid May did we finally get a memo from headoffice saying 'the ministry' asked us to remove all pens from service counter and lotto counter due to covid risk. Did it really only just occur to them that Pens handled by everyone were a bad thing???
Then two days after we get the remove pen memo we get another saying - there were customer complaints that clerks wouldn't let them use the pens so let them use your pen at the counter but sanitize it after they hand it back -- this is exactly what we were supposed to be doing before: sanitizing all high touch surfaces: but God forbid we should have people complain about a ministry edict and maybe lose a customer and their money *rolls eyes*
As per the usual I had one absolutely pleasant person last shift *extreme sarcasm detected* who was a peach to deal with. He came in with his kid both handling a lot of items and putting them back. When he came to the counter to drop his stuff (it's long enough for two people stuff the one I'm with and the next) I told him sorry I have to ask you to stand back at the floor markers please until I'm done with [current person's] stuff. He huffed and grabbed his pile of junk food off the counter and stepped back a bit. When it was his turn he throws his boxes back on the counter so they go sliding toward me. Doesn't say anything about almost dumping his stuff off my side of the counter. After he pays he grabs his bag of *kitten* and says do you really think that helps? Wearing that mask and gloves you keep cleaning (I put hand sanitizer on the gloves I was wearing because he paid cash and the hand sanitizer we have is really bad on your hands -- *sighs* and yes I still change gloves frequently and still wash my hands multiple times per shifts but wearing gloves part time is easier on my hands (and comfort level)) and having me stand back a few feet. Those gloves aren't clean. That hand sanitizer doesn't do anything Its still there. Its all useless you know. Do you really think having me stand back does anything? Do you? Were all going to get sick anyway. And as I, flustered because I hate personal confrontation, say it's store policy to tell him to stand back he storms out with his kid in tow. (As a side note the kids shirt said "I don't make the rules I don't even follow them" that kind of shows the parent opinion right there Doesn't it?)
Fun times right? I guess at one idiot per 8hr shift that's not a bad rate but it does turn a good day sour.
~~~
Off topic-ish but I want to say it.
As things progress I hope you're all doing as well as you can. This mess is big and scary and impossible to ignore. I know a lot of people are doing their best and a lot of people don't care at all and the latter are frustrating and scary to the former. They are to me. Things are changing as we go and we don't know how long this will continue. All we can do is keep doing our best I guess. What I hope is that people don't do it alone. If you're seeing this you're part of this community. Right now, lean on that. If you're feeling stressed, please reach out. Or rant about if that works. Just -- we have this community take advantage of it, ok?10 -
I’m so sorry you have to deal with that kind of person. Yes, the child’s shirt says it all.
Stay strong. Keep smiling. We’re on your side.2 -
Taryn, I'm so, so sorry you have to go through this kind of nonsense. Even though most people are nice, that kind of incident is really discouraging.
Sadly, some people have no empathy or sensitivity at all. And - maybe you know this - there's an actual phenomenon called the "Dunning-Kruger effect" that basically theorizes that ignorant people can believe they know better than well-informed ones, because they're oblivious to how much they don't know. Put those characteristics together, add some people's tendency to treat people in service roles as a target, and you have a recipe for the kind of behavior you describe. It's awful.
Have you been reading in the Coronavirus Prep thread (https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10787509/coronavirus-prep) at all? I can't recall if I've seen you post there. That's been a really informative, generally sensible thread where some people do vent a little bit and get support, but there's also been a lot of helpful information posted, plus experiences from all over the world.
Thank you for doing what you do. Please know that most of your customers appreciate what you do to keep them safe - I'm sure of it - even some who are rushed and in their own little stress-bubble and don't acknowledge your efforts. (I do try to remember to thank cashiers (and other essential workers I encounter) for showing these safety-related courtesies, but I do forget sometimes.) Hang in there!6 -
Travelling. Ugh. It's not just European countries. If you've travelled /Anywhere/ please don't come in. I actually had a regular customer go on vacation to Cuba for a week and so I didn't think I'd see him for three. He came in for his regular coffee and when I asked him why he wasn't self quarantine he told me that was only for travelling to European countries. It's already over here and you're going through high traffic ports. It's any travel. Once he left I wiped down all the door handles coffee station stuff and counters etc with disinfectant and washed my hands but he still came in and there were other people in the store too. That is A Bit Not Good.
Hi hello! Anyone remember this story from my first post? Well I've got a funny story for you!
A guy came to the door got halfway in muttered oh it's that girl and backed out holding the door for the next lady.
Let me explain. For starters I don't normally work Thursday, so surprise.
So this guy actually came in a week after this first visit and again I asked him if he shouldn't be home? Had it been fourteen days yet because I wasn't sure what date exactly his return was. He was 'upset' that I was questioning him and said and I'll quote because it stuck with me "it's been way more than 14 days, last time I was in it had been a week already"
Please note the 'last time' he had come in was literally a week before so way more than 14 days =/= 1week +1week.
Ok fine whatever it's been 14 now anyway. So he moves to get coffee. Which as of during that week we were no longer making because it was customer self serve and no longer 'safe' according to head office. He goes 'what? The coffee?' And I say 'theres no coffee now. There's no more coffee till all this is done.' Which he takes Very personally for some reason I'm not sure - like I didn't make coffee just to spite him? I don't know how he thinks that'd be possible its a large pot. He throws the empty cup out forcefully and storms back towards the door. 'Whatever I'm just not coming here anymore.'
And that's that.
I haven't seen him since then till today. I've worked here 7 years come less than a month from now and he was a regular, a friendly one even. He definitely knew my name. But now I'm "that girl" and I know it was meant derogatorily and he muttered loud enough for me to hear it about 7/8 feet away but I think it's hilarious he's that petty about being questioned that he won't even come in because I'm here. Well good if that's his attitude he's not someone I want to deal with.
I'm That Girl 😂6 -
Haven't seen that thread actually. Thanks for the link. I know this thread turned into more of a blog than a thread whoops. I'll check out that one.
I know most people are good. And I do appreciate each person who uses the tap feature on their cards rather than cash. Those who sign all their lotto tickets before coming in. Those who wear masks into the store. Those who hold or turn their items so I can pick up my scanner and just scan everything rather than handle all their stuff. I like all of them and I do appreciate everyone who makes my job a bit easier right now. All of you are awesome🤗 thank you for being polite to your cashiers. We really do appreciate the little things.
Like I said one idiot per 8hr shift is pretty good I guess. For every horror story customer I've got more people who are awesome. They come in saying hello how are you things going well with a mask on and they grab the exact items they came for put them on the counter and say that's it and it'll be debit and they're back to their car in under 10 minutes. That's it. That's a good customer who knows what they want doesn't handle a dozen things and put them back just gets their list, is polite and goes on their way.
It seems like a lot of bad customers but it's important to note all of you who are good too. You definitely outnumber the bad and you all make the day better as I go on to the next shift. So thank you for being nice to your cashiers!6 -
My BIL and I were sitting in the car waiting for my sister at the grocery store. I'm watching all the people. Maybe 1/3 of the people have masks. Then I'm watching another with no mask, shake hands and give this couple big hugs. The couple are wearing a mask.
I've become so judgmental lately, when I see all these people no longer wearing masks and/or social distancing. I had a feeling reopening would give everybody the sense that things must be better therefore no need to worry any more. I saw a young mom shopping the other day, with her (about) 1 year old, no mask for mom. Makes ya wanna scream. I saw a group of 4 young people go into the same store as I was coming out, no masks.
Obviously I'm paying too much attention now and need to get over it; just stay out of everybody's way.7 -
Well you're not the only one to see it. The nicer the weather gets the more I see groups of three or four teens going around together with no distancing or masks. Yes it's under 5 people but that's probably three households mixing right there. I do kind of cringe watching people get close to each other now.
I get that people want to hang out with friends but guess what so do I. I miss my best friend like hell right now. *sighs* Her birthday is in roughly a month so I'm gonna be dropping stuff on her front step I guess. I still have to decide what to get her other than alcohol though🤣😅3 -
I wonder why so many countries have done so badly at controlling the virus. I just don't understand it. About half a dozen countries have controlled it successfully, including my country. But there doesn't seem to be any predictor of success or failure. Rich, poor, democracy, communist, island, continent. None seem to make any difference.0
Not sure which country you are posting from.
And hard to answer without getting political - but I think those countries which did better took early and strong measures, had consistent messages from leadership and a population which had higher level of compliance.
And yes, some luck.
But mostly the above.
Going to try to talk in generic terms...but countries with a unified national response and strict guidelines tended to fare better. Other countries leave guidelines up to local leaders, so there is much more variation across the country as far as how strict the policies are.
Time was also a factor. Quick responses early on in the pandemic tended to keep more control over the spread, while delayed responses gave an aggressive virus time to spread exponentially before anything was done about it.8
