After 10 years of alcoholism. I'm 2 weeks sober. July 1st is my bday so fingers crossed I can pass a month sober AND not fall into bday temptation.12

Thank you @dawnbgethealthy I know you are right! It's just a bit of an initial shock. You are right that working from home is more of an option that it ever has been. That is encouraging! I appreciate the kind words and vote of confidence.
@looneycatblue I am in a similar boat. The only reason I didn't drink yesterday is because I said I wouldn't on this thread. I'm here for you.
@forestdweller1 I have those days, too. Where I just spend my evenings talking myself out of it, but I still want it. That was me yesterday.
My report is that I remained AF yesterday. But, I scarfed down a piece of my daughter's leftover birthday cake at 10 pm. I'm not sure what is worse. The wine probably would have been less calories.
June 1: AF
June 2: AF
So far in June 2/2 days AF7 -
@sklaw31 ...now you did it !! Are you using that 3 ingredient U-Tube method ?? I keep my fresh unpeeled ginger root in a the fridge in a Mason jar of dry sherry, so I doubt it would have enough yeast in the skin to ferment. Let us know how your experiment turns out....in a couple weeks when it's "done".
8th Day AF...and I don't know what "kitten" day of the week it is anymore.7 -

I started on this thread November 28.18 - at that time I was having drinks every day. That first AF day was very hard! I vowed to have 1AF day per week to start, then progressed to 2AF days per week etc.
My goal now (that is working for me) is 16-20 AF days per month. I have been keeping within that since last October. I am comfortable and happy with that goal.
I have never ever been able to exceed 3 drinks or I throw up. There is moderation for you : - P
I log in here every day with a running calendar/journal of the month at a glance. It helps me.
Monday June 01.20 - AF
Tuesday June 02.20 - AF - Very long, very stupid day, my first back working for a company that I loathe. This is why i always designated Tuesdays as my drinks days in the past. However, I am coming toward the end of a 100 day weight challenge thread, and that is my motivation to stay "dry" for at least the next 5 days. In the previous round of it I lost 1.7 pounds in 100 days. Hoping to lose 2 pounds this time. (I know, painfully slow, but better than gaining, and it really does get more difficult to lose weight with aging.)
2AF day out of 2 days so far.
I once had a job that I loathed. I feel your pain! Good luck on your 100 day challenge!4 -

Congratulations!!!4 -
Today was my first AF day of the month. I wanted one, but had seltzer and cranberry instead and the craving passed.
I have got to try ginger beer and cranberry! I got a 12 pack of Fever Tree ginger beer at Costco recently for about $15, so that brings the cost way down. Normally we use them for Dark and Stormies, but nice to know they can be put to better use.6 -

AF 3/3 for June and 12/14 for Take a Break. @globalhiker: I think of bears as I do the ocean, not fearfully but respectfully. By themselves they probably won't bother you. But if you accidently get between a sow and her cub/s then you'll want your bear spray disarmed and in your hand, while you back away making a lot of noise! So you called the police and reported "unbearable" behavior? No specific brand of no-cal ginger beer. I buy whatever is in stock and cheapest. I mix it with cran-cherry so the taste of the beer isn't a big deal for me.
@forestdweller1: You have a wine cellar? With wine still in it? I could never keep more than the 6 packs in the fridge. You know, the ones you get the discount on at Safeway?
@shorepine: Glad you're back! Agree w/ @dawnbgethealthy that if you have to look for a job working from home there's no time like the present. Could be one of few silver linings from Covid-time.
@tjpawprint03 & @AlwaysStayTrue: Welcome! Sounds like you're both off to good starts (better than mine was). You'll get used to my posts, I type a lot. Can you imagine how much I talk?
For anyone interested. If you drink (or used to drink) IPA beer, Athletic Brewing out of San Diego makes a decent N/A called Run Wild IPA. $12.99/6 pk. Shipping is free when you order 2 or more. Also 10% of proceeds go to support laid-off restaurant workers. I'll get back to you with the name of the organization tomorrow. They also brew other styles of beer but in my world, you go IPA or you go home
"Day drinking used to be fun until everyone started doing it during lockdown."6 -
Welcome @tjpawprint03 and @AlwaysStayTrue. What ever your drinking less goals or desires are this is what we are all about. Nice to have you joining in and congrats on your already achieved success.
Day 3/ AF 3 even went out last evening to listen to live music on a pub patio. Ate and drank iced tea 😎
Have a great day everyone gotta run or I would write more.8 -
0 drinks/3 days....thanks for the ginger beer tips! Think I will try Bundaberg and also attempt making my own...why not...
Athletic Brewing beers I see won all sorts of awards, impressive. I should get a pack for my husband and mix them in with the others in his beer fridge Maybe it can help him cut back.
@dawnbgethealthy : I'm on the June Weight Loss Challenge...it's ok....it's not very chatty or supportive, but it's a place for me to document the weekly progress and it's working.
It's helped me discover that I have a really tough and protective body and so I've stopped being mad at it and now accepting that's my good genes....if I got lost in the woods, I'd easily survive a week with no food or water, my body holds onto everything extremely well!

So glad to have you all’s support in this group! 11am EST, the begging of day 3 AF for me. Having my second helping of English breakfast tea. Will try mocktails this weekend. Cheers!8

Well, @Doxmum , I've got a cellar. And it stays cold year round. And I have an antique ^ shaped 160 bottle walnut wine rack from an old So. Md. winemaker down there. So = "wine cellar". IMHO. Never have come close to having it completely filled, but maybe one fine day. Having to actually go down to fetch a bottle gives me a moment to consider....50-50
Making Teriyaki chicken [for one] tonight, and my recipie calls for equal parts soy sauce, brown sugar, and wine. What do I do with the rest of the bottle ?? Previously not a problem...drink it, before, during, and after making dinner. Used the dry Sherry holding my ginger instead...Problem solved.
@looneycatblue ...posting AF Day #9 early so I'll be too embarrassed to have to post a correction.
Hmmm..can y'all tell I don't know how to use a computer yet ??

AF June 4/4 Take a Break 13/15. REALLY trying not to drink tonight - looks like I'm going to make it. Why? DH is Canadian and has dual citizenship now. Two step-daughters, 2 son-in-laws (SIL) and 4 grand kids are all Canadian. One family built a nice home here on Whitefish Lake in Montana. Bad windstorm last week resulted in some damage to said house. Nothing DH and I can fix. So SIL drives to border today.
US Border Patrol: "What are you doing here?"
SIL: "I have a house in Whitefish and it was damaged in the storm last week. I'm going down to check on it. I'm coming back tomorrow."
Border Patrol: "That doesn't sound like essential travel to me. I'm denying entry."
SIL: "But it's my house. I pay US taxes on it."
Border Patrol: "You Canadians are going to have to learn the hard way aren't you? Now go back to where you came from."
I have NEVER heard a border patrol agent talk like that. And we practically commuted to Alberta (until Covid). If there is any doubt about the cancer that is metastasizing throughout our country under the current administration, this proves it on a very personal level. The tone and attitude of an organization is set by the leader at the top.
May start day-drinking.6 -

4AF day out of 4 days so far.5 -
Cheering for you @dawnbgethealthy to have a scale victory this week. Hang in there.
So as I mentioned Wednesday night we went out to a patio pub to hear live music and eat. I drank iced tea. I had written my post yesterday before my husband got up to go to work. Wow...his alcohol drinks hit him hard and it definitely showed. He had to work all day hung over, then decided to have a few right after work before he left(a delayed hair of the dog). That did not take long to hit him once again. I was so happy it was not me in his predicament. I want to enjoy and get the most I can out of these beautiful days before being shut in with bad weather.
First weekend of June.
Thinking back about 3 years ago I would plan all day how my Friday fun night was going to be. Early in the day not eating so I could wear a nice outfit that evening and look good, then planning what I would drink before I even left the house. Needing to pre-load a bit also because no one wants to get to a fun spot sober....right?
Then slowly( or some times quickly) the night began to unravel and my pre laid plans for that terrific night out came crashing down on me. Needing to recover at my age took days, not hours. Why do I reminisce about these nights I should foget? To keep me in line and accountable. Because no matter how great of a time you think you will have, it can spiral very quickly in the opposite direction.
June, Day 4 / 4AF😎

I thought you were just trying to make a BOLD statement to get our attention.
Use Catpuccino as a door block in front of the cellar door.
Your doing excellent.

Wow really hope they were not Americans border patrol gaurds that were at the border being rude. That is horrible. I am missing my Canadian friends that would frequent of our town.
Big applaude for staying AF4 -
"WAVING"...nice to see you @whitpauly. Hope you are keeping busy being back to work. You have your streak going again. 👍👍👍4

0 drinks/4 days...yesterday had my first June "challenge day". Son visited for first time in 6 months so he and his dad of course started drinking beers - for 6 hours!! - I had to challenge myself - should I run out and get a bottle of wine?- needless to say I didn't, and instead had 4 cranberry on ice (4 oz ea)- the most ever. The strangest thing is I woke up today feeling hungover!! Geez, I overdid the juice for the first time!
On a separate note, the way things are going in this country, I would VERY gladly become a Canadian citizen, get out of here and live happily ever after on a future small farm property on Vancouver Island.5 -

Hello Friends. After 3 months AF, I've finally hit a weight that I don't think I've seen since menopause about 8 years ago. It's been slow coming, but you know what they say about slow and steady. I think I thought once I started a drinking break, weight would fall off as fast as clothes do after 5 shots of tequila. But overall, I'm down 10 pounds from my highest weight in the past year, which is significant for a 5'1" gal. And I'm definitely feeling stronger and healthier. If I skip an exercise day, it's usually because of crappy weather or sore muscles. Not the cocktail flu.
Stay mindful everyone this weekend and if you have some drinks, savor them. And if you don't, savor waking up refreshed! And for those who are working crappy jobs (I can so relate), or are unemployed, please remember you are not your job. Hugs...11 -
New AF Streak: Day 1, yesterday. Yep, sad truth. Thought I would see if could "maintain" Wednesday. I couldn't. The weirdest part is that after being AF for nearly 3 weeks, I actually had a hangover Thursday morning. That hadn't happened for the last couple years of daily over-drinking. I am labeling that hangover as progress. I considered every symptom I experienced individually: stuffy sinuses; tiredness; poor sleep, mind clouds, HEADACHE...you all know the list! I can't think of a single one of those I would like to re-live anytime soon. It was a wasted day in a world where each day should count. Here's to today! Love you all.11

OMG @Doxmum your border patrol story is insane. I share your concerns about the cancer in this country (US). Sigh. One more thing that drives me to drink, LOL.
Anyway, I drank a bottle of sparkling rose yesterday. Over the course of the evening, had a glass at 5 pm while talking to a friend on the phone who has also been laid off. Took me about 4 hours to make my way through the rest of it. That is the problem with bubbly, once you open a bottle, it's like OK now it needs to get drank. It DID make me feel better, that is the sad part. After the phone call with my friend, I was working in the garden, stringing up my tomato plants, slowly sipping a little mason jar of it. It was a sunny June evening (stays light out until 9:30 where I live right now). My husband came home, he's been out of town for work, which is such a huge relief.
I'm going to try to be AF today. I don't feel the best today because of that bottle, which makes me sad.
June 1: AF
June 2: AF
June 3: AF
June 4: bottle o' bubbly for no particular reason
So far in June 3/4 days AF8 -
I do not "Facebook", nor am I a "Twit", but I sent this to my daughters on Tuesday morning.
Why were the peaceful protesters in Lafayette Square tear gassed ??
So the "Chicken" could cross the road.
This would have been Day 10 AF, but after I send this post I may be banned from MFP. Serious consideration being given to opening a bottle tonight. Consulted with Catpuccino, and he just blinked and went back to licking his butt.
Thanks for the encouragement and inspiration from everyone here, if I can't return.

However, I am coming toward the end of a 100 day weight challenge thread, and that is my motivation to stay "dry" for at least the next 5 days. Friday June 05.20 - Having a couple of drinks. My last half hour digging and planting seeds was raining. I decided there and then that I would have a few drinks tonight. My weight was up 2 pounds today for no reason, so sacrificing having drinks really didn't appeal to me today. I have had my half a drink from my freezer lol, and have just poured a second. It is nice for me. Watching "Caribbean Life" on HGTV where they are always having yummy looking cocktails, and I am happy to not be white knuckling it resisting having some drinks today. All good : - )
4AF day out of 5 days so far.3 -
AF 4/5 in June. 13/16 on Take a Break. I caved today but only drank 1 can of 10% Brut bubbles. @MissMay: It was US Customs & Border Protection (CBP to those of us who commute across the border) at the Del Bonita crossing between Alberta and Montana. @forestdweller1: You and I both will be invited off MFP, probably together. @globalhiker: We love Vancouver Island! Realistically though, we'll head for Cranbrook first (looking at you @dawnbgethealthy). Yep, there's better than a 50/50 chance we'll immigrate if the orange clown, toddler-in-chief is reelected.
Have a good weekend everyone. I've been discouraged this week. Will reset tomorrow! I haven't started day-drinking - yet.
