Kim - sorry about the snooker ball reference! It's similar to pool (although a snooker player would not say so), played on a larger table with smaller pockets, and many more nitnoid rules than pool. I grew up with a pool table in the living room, until my father sold it. I learned both snooker and pool from my brothers when I was so small that I had to stand on a footstool to see the table. Real snooker balls are smaller than pool balls, as well, thus the reference.
I learned to play pool when I was in my early 20s and watched sometimes Snooker on TV (I was working a 3 pm - 11 pm shift so my after-work TV choices were rather limited). After a bit my then-husband took me to a place with a Snooker table and I learned to play Snooker, a bit. I found the larger table a little difficult to work with.

Allie, the lift that my mom and dad had was easily operated by one person. It had to be as it was only them at home most of the time. Too bad about the rules of the trust. I get it, but that sure makes it hard on family who, perhaps, just don't have it in them to take care of the person. I know I couldn't do what you have done with your FIL or with Faith. I am not a natural caregiver!

Lisa: I am also gallbladder free. I had surgery several years ago. I had one enormous gall stone, about the size of an old fashioned “shooter” marble.
I am scheduled for a colonoscopy soon, but they’ve set things up to be as impossible as they can. DH is contacting our primary care doctor and trying to get some better results. At this point, I can go into the doctor’s office alone. There is no place where DH can sit, rest, or get to the bathroom. The nearest parking is not close enough and this whole thing is stressful for both of us. It is a no-win situation.
I am NOT a happy camper.

And can you wait another month or two for the colonoscopy? We don't have them here in Australia unless our bowel test kits indicate something. I guess I should really do the bowel kit thing at some point.
It's the same here with doctors. When we went to see the specialist for my husband's up-coming hernia surgery, there was no waiting in the wait room, however, they told us it would be about half an hour and got my number to ring to let us know when we'd be next. So we walked about half a block down the street, got take-away coffees and sat in the little park drinking them until his appointment.
Is that a possibility?

Regarding ...
Meatballs - I've never liked purchased meatballs. The ones I've had have been very fatty and chewy and really horrible. I'd rather make them myself.
Gnocchi - I'm not overly fond of it, but this I will buy now and then because it's not expensive and there are several varieties ... have a look over this grocery store page: https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/browse/dairy-eggs-fridge/fresh-pasta-sauces
Valerian - I use it to sleep through the night. I got onto it because I was falling asleep all right but then waking up about 2 hours later and then tossing and turning for the next few hours. I take it shortly before going to bed, and it did seem to help. Now I take it for a few weeks, then not for a while, and again for a few weeks, etc.
My Month Off from Uni - I will still be somewhat busy. I will continue working of course. But then both my husband and I have surgeries. He's got a hernia surgery and I've got my deviated septum. Plus there is a lot of paperwork to catch up on.
I am, however, hoping to spend a bit more time exercising!! At least until my surgery.

Allie “because of the trust [Faith] is not allowed to go into a nursing home but will have home care until she passes.”? Don’t understand how a trust could keep someone out of a skilled nursing facility, especially someone who has fallen so much. OH I see, it was written that way for her protection. Is it the trust that pays the home caregivers? Could your brother and his wife be dependent on that income? Would the trustees, or Hospice, provide a Hoyer lift? When you stay overnight, is there a cot for you in her room? If not, then time for those camera batteries. Why haven’t they replaced, are they expensive or hard to find? Good luck with the music, great idea.

I won’t use those poisonous little aluminum “tea balls” but don’t have any kind of porcelain strainer for pouring loose tea. Advice welcome. Grandma Hunter got me to drink milk by doctoring it with a little tea and sugar. Now that I seem to have outgrown most of my lactase deficiency, might have to try milk in my tea again.

Kim I like the brown crust that comes from searing meatballs in a (yes Katla) cast iron skillet, then finishing them in the oven or on the sauce. 35+ years ago when I was a veg, I made the tastiest fakes with grated sourdough crumbs, grated parmesan, grated onioni, and a dab of wine. Wish I could remember exactly how I did it and the proportions used…

The clean gym that I go to is opening tomorrow. Evidently the House drafted a bill allowing gyms to open. Unfortunately, so far the Governor hasn’t signed it yet.
Evelyn – I never heard that you could purchase a lift like that! That’s wonderful. I do hope Sean and Jean look into it.

Barbie – I love my IP so much that I really missed it when we went to FL. As a matter of fact, if I can find one (even a small one) at a good price, I’ll pick it up for the condo. Jess kept saying “ma, you’ve got to get one” and I kept saying “Jess, I have a pressure cooker and a slow cooker. What do I need another appliance for?” Then I tried Denise’s. Right then and there it went on my Christmas list. Jess and I went shopping before Christmas and I said to her “if I don’t get this for Christmas, I’m buying it myself”. I did get it.
Just read that the cartoon Elmer Fudd is no longer going to have a gun. How is he ever going to catch that rascally rabbit???

Hi Kelly, and all. I am doing very well. Like some others here, staying home alone was no problem for me at all. My weight fluctuates up and then down 2-3 lbs, so have maintained.
I have been consistent with run/walk routine 3 days a week. Longest length was 5 miles last Saturday. On alternate days I walk in the neighborhood. The nearby park was too crowded to be comfortable for me. I encountered different ladies walking in the neighborhood and now join them a few days a week.
I stayed isolated mid-March to mid-May. I am now having the grand kids over on Thursdays. My daughter works a 12 hour shift from home as customer service for Amazon that day.
Texas is opening phase 3 tomorrow. Restaurants open at 75% capacity, gyms are open. I have eaten out only once with a girlfriend last week. Server did wear a mask. Cases in Dallas county as well as Tarrant county continue to spike. Dallas had 312 new cases yesterday.
The YMCA has had line dance classes on Tues and Thurs for the last 2 weeks. 20 person limit in each class. The gym floor has rubber dots to mark staggered placements. You have to register for class through an app. Registration is open 72 hours prior to each class. The senior rec centers are not open and there is no date set for opening.
The boyfriend is history. Without being able to go dancing, we just didn’t have much in common. I didn’t enjoy just hanging out with him. I’d rather have been reading by myself. He could feel that I was distancing myself. He asked if he ever got sick if I would stay with him. He has several health issues that he didn’t share with me up front. My honest answer was that I would visit, but I had no desire to be a full time care giver. My intuition was that there is some health issue that I am unaware. I have no regrets with breaking it off, only relief.

Kim - I make meatballs like you, I have never cooked them before hand. I don’t make spaghetti and meatballs though. I make sweet and sour meatballs with usually rice.
Evelyn - I am not a natural caregiver either. I just can’t do it. When my Dad was sick he chose to go into palliative care at the hospital as he didn’t want Mom or I doing it. I spent a lot of time with him but the nurses did his care.
I did read and know there was more to comment on but I lost the note I was writing somehow.
My Mom never threatened me with this but I like the sentiment!

Yes Karen they are Merchant Gourmet. My DDIL would not approve as it generates too much waste to have individual packets, but I think they are great and I swallow my guilt. We are having the other half tonight with the same veg as yesterday, plus some broad beans, as it was delicious. Tandoori Chicken with it.
I used to cook a lentil, quinoa and brown rice mix in the IP, which was very nice. Should do that again. I bagged and froze it in portions. However, I am a lazy cook.

Called nearest Ford Dealer (in Coos Bay 2 hrs north). Learned needs more maintenance than just an oil change. Fortunately car still covered by extended warranty (‘til august 2021 hooray!). Appointment for 1pm June 24, will take approx. 3 hrs, but alas, the waiting room is closed for the duration. Will walk to the farmers’ market, then when it closes will find somewhere to sit and nosh from 3-4pm.

Katla for us Phase 2 meant larger gatherings at church ok (up to 50), restaurants can stay open til midnight instead of 10. Other details available at https://govstatus.egov.com/OR-OHA-COVID-19 but honestly they’re kinda hard to decipher. Playgrounds closed, sports courts open but not for bodily contact sports (so we can dance on basketball courts, and kids can shoot baskets, but can’t play a game of basketball.) Looks like movie theatres could reopen subject to capacity reduction, maintaining physical distance but ours is still closed. Heard a drive-in theater was opening in the Rogue Valley, I’d love to see a return of the drive in movie!

Thought ok, no internal mic, I can just buy a plug-in external, right? Maybe not. Plugged it in, not detected, doesn’t pick up voice, (even when turned on :} ) and now the internal speaker has stopped playing sounds. Too tired and lazy to figure it out myself. Will take it to the pc guy, maybe Sunday afternoon. Means another zoom chat with former coworkers via phone not laptop.

Finally getting the rain that the garden was crying out for after an unusually dry, sunny Spring. It does mean that gardening is not as pleasant, but there are still things that need taken care of outside. However, I am choosing to exercise inside today.
I’m managing to stick to my daily goals, and maintaining below my glass ceiling, despite upping my strength workouts.
NI Assembly has lifted the closure restrictions on all shops from today, provided that they have social distancing in place. The only shop I might be interested in is my local Pavers, as I need to replace some of my summer footwear. We did successfully visit 2 local garden centres last week, after the initial rush on the first few days of opening, so our summer planters will be colourful after all.
Meatballs: These are so easy to make at home, it wouldn’t have occurred to me to buy them ready prepared. We seldom have them these days. However, I buy steak and venison burgers from our local Master Butcher, who is the SiL of a family friend. He sources his meat from local organic farms, and the quality’s day taste is excellent.

Apologies ahead of time to any tea drinkers in England and Ireland - I boil water in a kettle, then pour it over a teabag in a mug (Tetley here, can't get PG Tips). Everything's fine up to that point... but then I put a tablespoon of sugar-free vanilla non-dairy creamer and two Splenda in it. Learned to drink tea with milk during the six years I lived in England (Sussex for three years and Berkshire for three years, at RAFB Lakenheath then RAFB Greenham Common, with an eight year gap in between). The ladies I worked with in the military kitchens would have been so disappointed with me!
What I found funny about the video, Machka, is that Americans are just as whack-a-doodle about coffee as our brethren and sistren from whence we came are about tea... and during the time I was there, never met a British person with a coffee pot - only instant coffee, which makes most Americans shudder. You never hear about that, though, where the hot tea thing is a recognized meme.

I drink it at home and at work.
At work, we drink this (the department gets it for us) ... and I also get it for my husband at home. Remember, he has no sense of taste or smell so it doesn't really matter.
I drink this at home ... it's a step up from International Roast.
But I drink both strong and black ... 2-3 teaspoons per cup.

Barbara - I had to educate myself on your question of whether the cooled gnocchi would be a resistant starch, and the answer is, apparently, "yes." (https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/cooling-resistant-starch.) Most interesting to me was that potatoes and rice, if cooled, hold their resistance even when reheated. It's very possible that by keeping bread in the refrigerator (even though you're not supposed to for quality, it retards mold growth for much longer than non-refrigerated), we've also been creating a resistant starch with the wheat flour there. Interesting article at that link.
Cathy - Good to see you - and knowing ourselves is the key to a much happier life, isn't it?
Finishing my coffee and then getting outside while it's cool to get the yard trimmed well. It's needed doing for weeks, and Corey got some done last week, but I can get more done today, and then go ahead and do the full mow with the big riding mower much more easily. Staying off the elliptical this morning, as the trimming will provide plenty of exercise, and I'll need the knees to hold up for a couple hours... the neighbors are going to hate me for running a machine this early, but since they now have a HERD of dogs (six at last count, all sizes) who bark at me like they've never ever seen me every single time I go outside, I have little sympathy. She fosters dogs, and has promised that they're going to build a privacy fence this summer, which will at least help with the noise. I'll believe it when I see it.
I've lost ten pounds now from my highest weight in mid-May, six of them since the first day of June. Makes me WANT to go outside and work until all the sweat patches run together, and makes me want to keep my eating under control. I'm in a positive feedback cycle, which is lovely at the moment. I know the plateaus are coming, and I know they'll be hard--but I know that every day, I also feel better, both mentally and physically.
My final paycheck also hit my bank account this morning, too--and they followed through with what they promised and paid me for the final week, even though they released me the week prior. It feels like that final checkmark that says "You really are done." I can take a deep breath now, and get on with things.

Hi everyone just catching up hugs for all who need them.
BIL cremation yesterday only 10 allowed in Cremation so even some of grandkids not allowed in. They did not even broadcast the service on the speakers so rest of us outside were really excluded. They opened the doors right at the end but not good. The family arranged for the service to be streamed but WiFi was useless so we couldn’t access live but watched recording at home. Then no wake which our family are really into so we will get together when this ends.

Things I've liked since being at home from the end of March ...
Being home all day with my husband. I've got a better understanding of how his day goes.
Spending time with Rhody, getting to know him and getting him settled into our home.
Being able to go outside to walk, run or cycle in daylight, despite the fact that the daylight hours are getting shorter.
Having the energy to exercise regularly.
Seeing more people outside exercising.
Being able to sleep at least half an hour more each night than I was.
Being able to go for a nap in the afternoon occasionally.
Not having to spend 9-10 hours a week commuting!!!
Spending my days with a 180° view of the bay and trees and outside instead of a wall.
Being in an environment that rarely gives me sore, itchy eyes, sore throat, cough, and the sneezes.
Being able to clean this and that.
Wearing casual, comfy clothes.
Not having as much stuff vying for my time.
More time to work on my two courses at uni.
Working remotely at my own pace ... which might lead to continued remote work ... maybe ... hopefully!
Being able to attend church online.
Feeling much more relaxed and less stressed!
Just to name a few.

Well, one of my many worries is that I won't pass my courses. So I'll use that as motivation to start studying for my final exam tonight!!

4. Show Appreciation to Those Who are Helping Others
I think of people like Rori, Tracey, Allie and the others here who are caregivers and especially caregivers to those with brain-related issues.
Also, co-incidentally, June 2 was Thank A First Responder day. My husband and I have been fortunate to be able to thank those who have helped him. Wonderful people!
5. Smile and be friendly, even when you're social distancing.
That's something I've really enjoyed about all this. When I'm out walking, running or cycling, we exchange waves, nods and smiles with other people. It's nice. We can still be friendly, even with a road in between us.
6. Notice the upsides during the lockdown, however small.
There are so many upsides!! See the list I made for June 1 above!
7. Find a joyful way to be physically active (indoors or out)
For me, being active is joyful. I love being active.
I love walking, running, hiking, cycling, canoeing, rowing, splashing around in water (my version of swimming), cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, etc. etc. Give me an individual or partner activity (preferably not a group activity) and I'll most likely try it. I've given body boarding a try. I've given both individual and dual kayaking a try, and tennis, badminton, golf ... and I've got archery and dance on my list.
As I mentioned I am studying for my final exam. The course is about the interaction between technology and humans, and this actually ties into the lecture I'm currently watching (I'm watching the Q&A section after the lecture right now) as well as the talks I watched earlier today in that technology taking something away from our sense of place.
The talks have hinted at it, but haven't come right out and said it ... balance. I like technology. I like being able to go online to work, to attend university, to communicate with people. But I also like setting it aside for periods of time, going outside and doing something.
8. Write a letter to thank someone for what they did.
I'm not one for writing letters anymore. I used to have a set of penpals and used to spend quite a bit of time writing, writing and writing but I stopped doing that in my late 20s. Now if I write, it's by email.
However, I did thank my husband for Thursday when I wrote my exam. He was very quiet!
9. Find the joy in music today: sing, play, dance or listen.
I have ABC Classic FM on during the day and that has been great! I love having that sort of music on in the background when I work, and my husband and I are both also enjoying the small bit of commentary explaining some of the background to the pieces and bringing them to life.
If I have to go back to work at the office, I'm going to have to figure out how to "listen live" there.
10. Take a photo of something that brings you joy and share it.

11. Say positive things in your conversations with others today.
On Thursday the 11th, there wasn't much conversation. Most of my time was spent studying, then doing my exam, then going into a semi-vegetative state. But I'm usually pretty positive with my husband.

12. Make a plan with friends to do something fun together.
Um ... even if we're starting to be allowed to do that, we're not doing that. We like the shutdown, staying away from people, staying home most of the time, and not socialising.
But if all goes well, we'll get outside for a bicycle ride tomorrow.
I was thinking of cycling or running today but I'm just really, really tired.

I've tidied up and cleaned up a bit for the cleaner. :laugh: I don't like her spending her precious time doing things that we would get around to later, like the washing up, so I always make sure the kitchen is clear. I empty the bins and wastepaper baskets.
I've prepared the tandoori chicken and the raita.
Now to do some rowing! Phew!

I've been out a lot this week. On Wednesday Jake and I picked up take out Chinese food, yesterday I went to the grocery store in the morning and took Bernie to the vet to have his nails trimmed in the afternoon.
I set myself up to be stressed at the grocery store because my goal is to shop for enough that I won't have to go back for three to four weeks. I went early so it wasn't crowded. We are so well stocked that it seems even more absurd to me that Jake is continuing to research the difference between an Instant Pot and a Ninja Foodie. If he buys one, he'll need to buy all sorts of ingredients that we don't normally have in the house.
Going to the vet was easy. I didn't even have to get out of the car.
Imagine the absurdity of this---Jake didn't feel like fixing the eggs and potatoes he'd promised me for lunch yesterday so he served microwave mac & cheese while watching a video comparing the Instant Pot and Ninja Foodie cooking a whole chicken.
I did make one absolute pronouncement about the new cooker (if Jake decides he needs one)---it will not live on the counter. There is already too much that I'd love to put away but Jake likes easy access.

Barbie ~ My sister has the Ninja Foodie and seem to like it a lot. I have the Foodie Grill/Air Fryer and like that. You are right, they do take up a lot of room. Makes me wish I had more counter space.

Kate UK: I’m sorry that your family wasn’t able to follow its traditions when DBIL passed away. I hope your traditional get together is able to happen before too long. :flowerforyou:
Barbie: Our IP “lives” behind cupboard doors. When DH gets it out to cook, he often leaves it on the counter and I’m the one who puts it away. It takes up a substantial amount of shelf space when not in use.
Our county has entered phase two of reopening. We still need to wear masks but some of our businesses are allowed to reopen. My athletic center is one of those that can reopen. I look forward to resuming yoga in the near future. DH is looking forward to Thai food. They’ve been offering take-out service since the Covid19 situation began but we haven’t eaten out anywhere in months.
One of my bean plants did not survive the deer and I’ll be planting another bean seed there, but the rest of the plants are doing well, and I didn’t see any new damage this morning. Yay!!! DH & the dog are still sleeping. I’m enjoying the chance to catch up here and have a quiet cup of coffee.
