I saw it at Walmart last time I was there. It was like 4 bucks for a medium box... What do I do with it, how do I cook it and is it good? I like to try new things but I was scared to buy it cuz I didn't know what to do with it.

quinoa is fantastic! You can cook it in some chicken broth in a pan to give it flavor. I make a quinoa salad with fried onions and garlic with cucumbers, steamed broccoli and red peppers :-)0
-
I use it in place of rice and pasta. My kids love it, and so does my hubby :happy:0

It's very versatile and cooks similar to rice. I have a crock pot of quinoa breakfast cereal (with nuts and dried fruit) cooking right now but it's a new recipe so I can't say how it will turn out. I love to make a dish with it, mixinglack with black beans and corn, cilantro and seasonings. I'll be interested to read what everyone else says!0

bump. I have a box in the pantry and no clue what to do with it!0

It is a great source of protein. Rinse/soak it really well so it doesn't taste bitter. Cook with a 2:1 ratio of water and quinoa. I've also use a chicken broth instead of water. You can use it in any way you would rice. I really like in place of pasta too. I have also put in veggie burritos. I've heard people also put it in smoothies. I bet there are some really good recipes on the internet. Costco has a good price on a large bag.0

I looked for it the last time I was grocery shopping, at HEB. Does anyone know what section it would normally be in? Have been wanting to try it. Thanks!0

Quinoa is one of the worst tasting things I have ever eaten. I tried it many ways trying to hide the ickiness that it was and nothing I tried made it edible. I tried it because it is on the list of things I am allowed to eat, but if that is what I am allowed to eat I would rather starve! I have had quinoa pasta though and it is good.
Good luck.0 -
You should also try quinoa pasta! AMAZING!0

You can cook it like you would rice and you can have it either warm or cold and eat it in a number of ways. It us a great source of protein and tastes amazing - try a few different kinds and check out some recipes online to see what fits your tastes! Have fun experimenting!0

Vegetarian TImes has a great Quinoa Cherry Salad recipe on their website. I take it for lunch.0

I looked in Walmart in the rice section, where did you find it at your Walmart?
And, how do you pronounce it????
Thank you,0 -
I just bought my first box of it, and quite like it. I've made a pilaf and a stir fry using the quinoa instead of rice. I've also tried it plain with just a little salsa on it. All three dishes were delicious.0

It's cheaper at Trader Joe's if you have one near you.
I have only made it with broth and have never experienced the bad taste people have written about. I have mostly used the red quinoa from Trader Joes. I follow the directions on the package. Mix it up with some black beans, natural salsa (chopped tomotos, onions, peppers), cilantro, fresh lime juice, frozen corn thawed out, and1 pack of 100 calorie Wholly Guacamole or 1/2 an avacado and a dash of salt. Mix it all up and enjoy! Lots of protein and supper yummy.0 -
Use it in place of rice I LOVE quinoa. Make sure that, if you ever but it in bulk, you rinse it first. It'll have a bitter flavor if not. Try googling some recipes to feel extra inspired. I'll use it in burritos with beans and salsa or just mixed up with some frozen veggies with some seasoning. So good!0

I tried quinoa several times and enjoyed the taste but am intolerant to it. It makes me extremely sick. Just be aware that this is a possibility before you stock up (like I did).0
-
OO, yeah, I love quinoa. I also cook it up in either chicken or vegetable stock, depending on your tastes. I then simply add fresh tomatoes, cucumbers (diced) and black beans, sometimes throw in a little (diced) puple onion, garlic powder. I have added steamed broccoli to it, too. I've also had it in many of the same way we have rice down here in Arkansas, with butter and sugar (may be an acquired taste) and I've also had it with a simple gravy or au jus. I've also made it and tossed in a bit of parmesean, freshly grated, with some garlic powder. If you leave the parmesean on the top, you can blast it back into a broler and toast up the parmesean on top, and it makes it crunchy and divine. There really is little quinoa can't do, and it's extremely good for you.

I tried it once and loved it. I buy mine at Sprouts but I think it would either be with the rice or pasta if not there in the organic or healthy section. I use chicken broth and just go crazy with my spices...it's different every time. I like the red quinoa also, as far as I can tell it tastes the same but it's a little prettier!0

Remember to rinse first in a fine sieve as it is coated with a bitter substance. Then use like rice or in place of any whole grain. I have been getting diabetic recipe books/magazines and find it in them often. Cooking in low-fat, low-sodium broth increases flavor. Enjoy.0

Saving this thread! I too am curious about it since I'm trying to focus on a more plant based diet...thanks!0

Thank you,
KEEN-wah. Or if you're in Arkansas, near me, KEEEEEEN-Waaaaaahhh. :-)

I stumbled upon a really yummy looking Stuffed pepper reciepe the other day on here and I really wanted to try it but when I went to the store to buy the quinoa it was almost $11. I had to pass at that time because I couldnt see paying $11 for something I am not sure how it tastes.
Anyone know where to find it cheaper. This was the Bob's Red MIll brand I found in the baking section. I also looked in the pasta isle to see if there was another brand but didnt see any.0 -
I don't see that anyone else answered the question above. It is pronounced Keen-Wah.
I just had quinoa with black beans, corn, tomatoes, and jalapenos for dinner. It was yummy.0 -
it is pronounced Keen-wahh. I will have it for breakfast with cinnamon and raisins. Nobody else in my house would eat it, but I enjoyed it. I think it would fantastic in soups instead of barley. VERY interested in some of the recipes. Oh. and you find it in WalMart with the health foods, in our Wal Mart, it is by rice cakes. In my Kroger it is in the rice section, kind of off in specialty foods end and in Publix it is in the health food/organic food area. Ask the store manager, they may look at you a little funny, but if you are at a Publix, they will walk the darn store with you to find it. I love Publix. They are seriously nice people in my publix...and no I don't work there.0

Thank you,
Not sure where to find it a wall Mart - know you can find it in the rice/pasta section of trader joes and healthfood stores but it's pronounced' Kwin-wah'0 -
If you buy it bulk, rinse it well. If you buy it packaged, check that it's rinsed to keep the bitterness out. It really doesn't have a particular flavor I don't think, it's a lot like rice that way. It is easy to cook and keeps well. I make a batch on Sundays and it lasts all week long. At HEB, it can be found with the rice usually. I have only seen one brand of it at Wal-Mart, and didn't buy it because I think $4.88 is too much for that box when I can get it packaged at HEB for $2.99 or bulk for somewhere around $3.75/lb.
As for what to eat it with, anytime you'd normally eat rice for starters. It absorbs flavors well, and when I cook it, I use chicken broth and finely minced garlic and seasonings. I like it with black beans with meat. It's good cold also. Currently, I've been eating it in a salad with 2cups raw baby spinach, 1/2 cup quinoa, 4oz shredded chicken, 1/4 cup of avocado and 1/4 cup of red onion, only 325 calories!
Here is a website with a lot of information on quinoa and recipes too. http://www.cookingquinoa.net/category/quinoa-recipes0 -
yes i'm a big fan of Quinoa. Like most others said I use it in place of rice or pasta. This has been a great guilt free go-to to bring to summer bbqs. Mixed with grape tomatoes, cucumber, basil and feta, a little bit of evoo and s&p - hot or cold - thumbs up from me. try it - see what you like!0

You can find it in the bulk aisle if your HEB has a bulk area, be sure to rinse well. It is also with the rice. They don't have a large selection often, so it can be hard to spot. At my HEB, it's kept near the packaged, flavored rices.0 -
I boil it, then you can add any number so spices to it....I sometimes put cinnamon in it, or lemong pepper or just plain..... I find it by the rice and cous cous in the United stores...0

One of our local restaurants makes a veggie bowl with Quinoa. Not sure how they cook it, but the put about 1/2 cup in the bottom of the bowl, top it with hummus, then a bunch of fresh chopped veggies (carrots, avocado, peppers, squash, zucchini, onion, etc. - basically whatever they get out of their garden). Then they serve it with a balsamic reduction dressing. O..M..G! So flippin yummy!0

Thank you,
I've seen it in at Walmart near the rice, by the packaged, flavored mixes for rice or pastas. The Walmart near me only carries one type it is in a turquoise box and is a little over $4.
Quinoa is pronounced: "KEEN-wah"0
