Just got home from my early morning walk with the dogs. The young dog wants to go home after about 30 minutes, my friend about 30 minutes after that. Then Sasha, the poodle, and I walk for about 45 minutes. She likes to sniff things and I like to listen to a podcast. It's a great way to start the day.

Looking for 60 and up who are not only counting calories but looking to cut sodium to share ideas and foods with because of hypertension. Would also love ideas or tips for dealing with arthritis, a newly discovered sciatica problem and lifelong thyroid disease and removal of. Made a wonderful new acquaintance with "veggiepat" and thinking there is strength in numbers. Male or female. Add me. I would love input!

We take turmeric tablets and glucosamine and chondroitin for our arthritis they seem to work for us. I also have sciatica sometimes I try doing leg exercises to help, if you look on you tube there are lots of stretches to help.Good luck add me if you want.2 -

Just in case you haven't run across it yet, there was a great post/thread about hypothyroidism started by a guy who is a scientist in the field, hypothyroid himself besides (I think his was removed, too, IIRC), and who also lost weight using MFP. It's packed with scientifically sound info, presented in a novice-friendly way, about hypothyroidism and weight loss. Worth a read by anyone who's hypo, if you haven't previously stumbled over it.

I'm also hypo. I have some osteoarthritis, but truly minor. I don't take some of the standard supplements for it (glucosamin/chondroitin for example) because I'm also a long-term vegetarian. Just staying active (especially staying flexible through stretching, yoga, etc.) has been helpful for me, the pain reduction from weight loss was huge, and I find self-massage techniques (foam rolling, lacrosse ball, etc.) helpful at times as well.
My hypertension (right on the edge of prehypertension/hypertension per the definitions at the time) went away, by getting to a healthy weight. I know that's not sufficient for some with a more genetically-based predisposition, but weight loss along improved a lot of things for me, and that was one.

Iβm new to this group. Gained the COVID 15 while quarantined. That was on top of the winter weight I put on. Decided to go back to Dukan. Finished the 6 day attack down 7 pounds. Now Iβm on Cruise until I lose the rest. Anyone else following this plan?

I am not terribly in need of limiting sodium but the first thing I was to almost completely eliminate sauces, dressings, and a lot of condiments. They add a lot of sodium with no noticeable nutrition. If you keep track of sodium on your food diary, you'll notice the sodium and the calories in sauces and dressings.

Itβs a diet program developed by the French doctor Pierre Dukan. I first learned of it when Kate was marrying William & both she & her mother used it to get in shape for the wedding.
Itβs mostly high protein, low carb & fat, & Very Strict until you lose the weight you want. No limits on the amount on food you can eat or counting anything. Just limits what you can eat. Heβs written books outlining it. Lmk if you want more info

I have had a lot of distractions lately including Drs appointments, celebrating my daughter's graduation from University, jobsearch after being laid off last month etc.. It has slowed my progress with weight loss and exercise some. However yesterday I got my strength training routine in. I have been able to do that once a week down from twice a week before. I talked everyone into a walk Saturday after dinner. My safety vest is too big for me now. We expanded our social bubble to include my daughters boyfriend early this summer and he was over for dinner. Saturday morning we had take out Dim Sum to celebrate. Yesterday I did some cooking with her. She made Char siu bao (steamed Chinese buns with bbq pork filling) and I made gnocchi. Next week she will be starting her job search and I expect things will start to return to normal.0

Hi, everyone...I turned 64 this month, and realizing that "Medicare age" is coming up quickly, I need to make a better effort with weight loss and fitness before I turn 65. It's been THE hottest summer on record for us, and I don't do well in heat, so my attempts at weight loss the last two or three months have been half-hearted at best.
With fall on the way, I want to do better, and would like to reach my next mini-goal (that's 12 pounds away) within the next few months, if possible.

My routine is so predictable that I don't think to share it with all of you. We are staying home except for walking the dogs for about two hours in the morning. I did venture to the grocery store this morning because the bag of cat food was almost empty. I shopped for a lot of other stuff as long as I was there. I go early and my grocery store has excellent safety protocols in place so I feel safe and comfortable.
My zucchini plant continues to produce so my supper always has a serving of zucchini.
I am in touch with others via zoom and have my wonderful husband to keep me company so life is good.

Speaking of Medicare, just got my husband all wrapped up as he turns 65 in October. Glad to get that over with, but once we got started, it wasn't really that bad.

Hi. Good to see all the posts here. The humidity was a little lower today, enough so that I felt confident taking a walk along the trails at Great Falls National Park again. When I walk with my mask and the dew point is high my glasses get so fogged up that I'm afraid of stumbling. I enjoyed the park watching the kayaks, birds and seeing people safely distanced was great. The Potomac river is running a little high since it's been a wet month. Been doing well with tracking, moving and keeping safe.

Nothing very exciting here to share, either.
I'm gradually repotting and propagating houseplants, and watching the outdoor ornamentals grow. I have no veggie garden anymore, but do have herbs, both perennial (oregano, tarragon, sage, lovage, thyme, potted rosemary) and some annuals in pots (dill, cilantro, basil, nasturtium). Those are pleasurable additions to meals.
I don't get out much, mostly just essential errands like groceries and the occasional doctor. I have been going to a very good little urban neighborhood center's farmers market, which has been an excellent source for lots of colorful, fresh, delicious veggies and fruits that make me very happy on the eating front. In yesterday's eating, there was sweet corn, tomatoes, elephant garlic and squash from that market. They have an excellent set-up for these times of pandemic risks, with widely spaced booths, plenty of circulation room, marked-out spots to stand in line at the right spacing, and everyone is required to wear a mask (though it's outdoors, since people may accidentally get close to vendors and others). It's on Wednesdays, and I go while many people would be at work.
After a period of unhelpfully lower activity, I got myself back into a good, regular exercise plan around the beginning of July (by force of will π, a rare quality in my life). So, I've been doing a short steady state rowing machine workout 6x a week, and some dumbbell exercises 3x (every other day). One day is a rest day, exercise-wise. Based on what I'd done in July, I decided to challenge myself to to do the Concept 2 (rowing machine manufacturer) Dog Days of Summer Challenge, where you row increasing numbers of meters per week during each week of August. Continuing my July routine covered the first two weeks, then I needed to add about 3km more to hit week 3. This week, I need another 10km for the week on top of that. (For perspective, for me 10K is only 8-9 minutes more rowing per day on average, so it's harder but not hugely so, especially at steady state pace.) As I'm increasing my rowing machine minutes, I'm slowing down progressions in the strength training, because I know I'm not age 20 anymore. π It looks like on-water rowing may start up again around next week, so I may be switching things up once August ends.
On the weight front, I think I'm still continuing the hyper-slow weight loss I started last October (less than a pound a month! π), but sometimes it's hard to tell, on the scale or even in my weight-trend app, if there's loss that slow happening behind daily water/digestive-contents fluctuations. But, I'm down around 10 pounds from where I was last October, so overall it's been working fine so far. Probably close to done, another few months tops. π
I usually self-indulgently share some flower pic, so I'll keep up the tradition, with my current Mandevilla 'Alice du Pont" vine, blooming in its pot on my back deck - a cheering view to see through the kitchen sliding door.

@Teresa - it is the dog days, no doubt. The funny part - my dog doesn't care - she wants to go for a walk, every day, regardless of the heat. We have been starting late in the evening and finishing in the dark. I'm lucky to live in an area where it is safe to walk after dark. It should start to cool off next week. YAY!4

Back with MFP. After attaining goal, a major home remodel (no kitchen for 8 weeks) followed almost immediately by coronavirus isolation and I am now 20 pounds upπ . Obviously, very unhappy with myself!!
I am 75 and live alone (nobody tempting me with no-nos, but also minimal support). I am very much missing my fitness center which not only shut down during the early days of covid but is now closed permanently. Am trying to do some strength building exercises at home, but much more difficult without the gym equipment (and the motivation of others around me). I have a new puppy who assures that I get out and walk and also a horse that I ride 5 days a week. I just need to get back to fixing healthy food and keeping the sweets and snacks out if the house!
I know what works for me ... just have to do It! Looking forward to getting to know people in this group and, hopefully, sharing support and successes.

I have been a member of MFP since 2012. I have only lurked not participated. I need to start participating! I am almost 69 in need of a second knee replacement and about 70 lbs. to lose. I know what to do but the little voice in my head constantly tells me I can't and it's too much effort. At this point in my life how to I turn that voice off?! I hesitate to share (because I figure I'm going to fail anyway( (there's that voice again) but I have taken the baby step of adding a profile picture which to me is a lot of commitment! LOL! I know MFP works and am hoping that I can make some progress this time.8
