I tell ya, between the weighted blanket, the knee pillows, joint relief creams and mouth guard, preparing for bedtime is a real production. Old age sucks.8 -

The kind you have to boil tasted SO nasty to me so I was really happy to find these. I got mine at Walmart. It's been almost a year and I haven't chewed through it yet.

I've got those *and* the CPAP (sleep apnea machine), and have found I do better (despite full mask for the CPAP, i.e. covers mouth and nose, and despite included humidfier and heated tubing) if I put a piece of medical tape on my mouth (vertical, just one strip) so my mouth stays shut & doesn't dry out. In some ways, this stuff feels like being assimilated into the borg, I swear.
Well, all but the weighted blanket . . . and I *do* have the mouthguard. The latest prescription one I got, the dentist makes in her office, and can adjust any parts that don't fit comfortably, and even repair later if it wears, or if I get a new crown (🙄) or something.2 -
I woke up to my cat sitting on my chest and thought “this feels kinda nice” so I had the bright idea of getting a weighted blanket to simulate said cat who can never be relied to lay on one place.
I haven’t had to take painkillers at night since I got the it. I still can’t believe it. I don’t know what I expected, but pain relief wasn’t it. And no tossing and turning.
I had the full CPAP for about a year. Quit using it as the weight came off. Thank heavens. I’d lay awake terrified I’d toss and turn into a knot and be strangled to death.7 -
I made this year a positive for me. For the past few years I've focused on the success of my clients. Well with my gym shut down and no clients, I decided to focus on me. And after 3 months of honey do list at home, the next few I focused on eating less and working out more intense. And since June I have missed a workout and am now down over 40lbs. And looking much leaner like I did in my mid 30's. But again, I'm an optimist in bad times or situations. I look for opportunities where people might think something is bad, and make good out of it somehow. It's why I'm never stressed.

Yeah, the boil ones hurt too much to bite through bc my mouth is already super sore from all of the clenching, so I made an appointment with my dentist and they custom fit me for one since the over the counter one wasn’t working. I honestly hope it works bc the goop they make you bite into is so disgusting that I need it to be worth it I have put that junk into my mouth.1 -

I suspect you should ask the dentist's office. There are different materials/types. Even once you get their advice, you can choose to ignore it, if you want to. 😉1 -

Scissors myself. The DDS had mentioned that I might want to do this.1 -

I'll be deep in the cold, cold ground before I log on the 24th and 31st, or 25th and 1st for that matter because leftovers, and doing maintenance between the two.

So....that's where I'm at in this process. It makes me angry that I let it go so much this year but being not able to take it back I can only look forward and make changes.
That's the key concept, process. The body is always either in a state of loss, gain or maintain. Don't look back, don't look forward, be here now and control the only moment you can, the present...9 -
I was experiencing a lot of mental resistance to logging what I ate and staying within calories, so I took December "off"; I ate at maintenance or (more usually) under it, and just focused on making sure I logged it. This appears to have fixed whatever mental quirk I was having, but since I have a fair amount of Christmas candy I'm going to just stay on maintenance until the 1st and eat a bit more of it. (grin) That way it's not around to tempt me once I lower my calories back down. I like to start things on defined points like the first day of the month or the first day of the week, so it's not so much of a New Year's Resolution as it is a good point to pick this up again and keep losing weight.7

Reenie, I could have written your post I too, have followed your posts over the years (and so many others who responded) and taken your words of wisdom to heart. It's really humbling to have done all the work 6+ years ago, to feel so good, to wonder why everyone couldn't do what I did... only to be back where I started Today is my day. There are still loads of cookies everywhere, but they're not going into my food diary unless they fit. It took me 10 months to put 10 pounds back on. I have nothing but time to get them (and the 10 that crept on the year before) off.
I hope your heart begins to feel a little lighter as the days get a little brighter. And I hope you'll be as kind and encouraging to yourself as you have been to so many others here. You deserve nothing less8 -
Hey, you've been around here for a while, you've been successful . . . now you're figuring out what works for you, personally, to hardwire it into habits with a personally sustainable process to reach/keep a healthy weight long term. That's the process.

I appreciate your uplifting and encouraging words and they do help. Some times when we go through stuff we tend to forget there are others who might be struggling with the same struggles and that would understand. We all head into our journeys in our own ways and have to find what keeps us on the straight and narrow.
Plus I realize it's been a challenging year for most people. We all need to learn to forgive ourselves and do the best we can with what we've got.
Now that the holidays have come and gone I feel stronger and more ready to face making changes.
Not just physically but in many ways in my life.8 -

Hey, hang in there. Decent chance there's still water weight/temporary digestive tract contents still showing up on the scale.
Sure, 10,500 cumulative calories over maintenance is possible in a week . . . but IME if taken in a very short time period like that, it doesn't all land on my body in the way I'd expect. Give it a week or two, see where you are, before feeling bad about yourself. (Heck, don't feel bad about yourself, even if then. Burns zero extra calories, y'know?)
I tend to drop water weight fairly fast, I admit, being post-menopausal and all . . . I'm down 3 pounds already from my day-after-Christmas weight (created by eating probably 2-3x maintenance for more than just that day). That's just from getting back on my routine maintenance plan (with it's little 150-ish calorie banking goal), zero workouts since then. Bodies are weird. 🤷♀️
One option: Get a little bit of a workout in, if you have time for it. For me, something like Christmas candy juices the exercise intensity quite nicely. 😉3 -

I get it. I always wonder why it seems so easy to put on weight rather than take it off. If a person can gain 3# in a week, they ought to be able to shed 3# once they get back to it. Sometimes it does happen like that, as Ann pointed out with water weight. Sometimes it doesn't.
Just don't give up!! Keep steady with what you were doing before and it'll happen again. You can and will do it.
Either make a date to start(I know many people don't feel that way but personally it's something I need to work out in my mind, stock the healthier foods, etc.) OR get rid of all those tempting goodies somehow. I've been known to throw stuff in the garbage(I know, wasteful ) or give away things or even make dh hide them.2 -
I think that human brain works very well with set dates or even new sceneries to mentally prepare for the new. Jan 1st or any other date set you ahead marks end of something and a start of new, and it might be a great way to start a new project. Also I know that it took me a looong time to mentally prepare myself. I don´t think I would have had any change to start a year or even 6 months earlier than I did, with the amount of stress I had at the time, I just wasn´t ready. When I finally started, the stress was not that much less, but I still knew that I was mentally ready for this lifestyle change and then it came easy.
And also I think it is ok to start one step at a time. That worked for me. I first kept a food journal without making much changes, then the changes came naturally one at a time. Same with adding exercise. I didn´t change everything at once, and it has worked for me thus far.
ETA: I think it is great that you are already here thinking and planning, finding peer support even if you are not making many changes yet. I wish I would have had the foresight to do that.2 -

Yes. I'm waiting. DH and I celebrate both our birthdays, Christmas, New Years and our anniversary in a 3 week span, so there's a lot of celebrating. And OMG... sweets for days around here. I have the remnants of 3 different chocolate cakes in my freezer ATM. They were all too good to pitch. I'm still celebrating, actually. DH said he didn't feel great, implicated all the excess sugar so he cut back. But not on alcohol. It's still wine or something every night. (I quit weeknight wine years ago because those were the easiest calories to cut).
My attitude about holiday excess is probably more relaxed than it has ever been. Maybe because through the pandemic I have released caring about several things that used to get me uptight. Maybe because I was a little underweight heading into the holidays (but not lifting enough to create a helpful bulk ).
About the clenching, I actually scheduled a crown with the dentist for a tooth that has long been cracked and in a "watch and wait" mode. When I got there, the tenderness I was feeling was no where near the cracked tooth. Dentist looked at my mouth guard (I always take it), and pointed out fresh clench marks in tender area. Said sinuses could be exacerbating sensation. So right there with you guys on the clenching. Guess I haven't released caring about as much as I give myself credit for.5 -

I got news this week that my Dad is going to go in for knee replacement. Which for him means rehab in a nursing home 😕I haven't seen my parents in over a year this will just make it longer because they won't let kids go in and visit. I am at a loss of what to do 😔

There are times when we simply need to give ourselves a break.
Periods (weeks) of our lives can be emotionally and mentally challenging and exhausting.
'Healthy' not only includes a number on a scale, but also how our state of mental and emotional well being are.
When the pendulum shifts too far in any one direction, it's time to reassess and take a short break to be able to clarify the mind.
Whether you need until this Sunday or next Sunday doesn't matter. What matters is coming back to 'it' with direction and a healthy attitude. This is derived from a culmination of physical, emotional and your mental state.4 -

I firmly believe that my spin bike and Peloton app saved me this year. My gym closed in early March and never reopened and I floundered for several weeks. I would get on my bike but never push myself like I would in a spin class. I got a free trial of the app in April and was instantly hooked. They have so much more than just cycling classes!! I've done two spin classes, 2 of the post ride stretches, and a meditation class and I feel that it's definitely worth the money, even though I'm still in the free trial phase.
