    March 1: Weigh in 149.73 (-.4 lbs) Trend Weight 150.8 (-.2lb)

Successes: I havent posted here since September. I've been maintaining just outside of my maintenance range for 3 months. Happy to return to the forum and hopefully get some support. I'm just starting to see individual weigh ins within my maintenance range. Since last posting I've been adding strength training to my weekly routine and I feel a lot stronger as a runner.

Struggles: Not posting my weigh ins when Im not in range. I'm going to do better.

Success: Stuck to my plan except on Wednesday, our anniversary (53 years!). Didn't go out but made a special dinner at home. It was fun to make, looked good, and tasted good with wine and dessert.

Struggle: No regrets for the dinner but I did gain a lb. Will just stick to plan, no adjustments, avoid little slips, and see if the lb goes away. I just got back to goal otherwise I don't think the one day indulges would have had an effect. This is what maintenance is all about.

    HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

It was a difficult week on the personal front – my son had a crisis and was very unwell for a couple of days. He stabilised after his steroids were substantially increased but he is deteriorating fast.

So sorry to hear this, Lesley. Thinking of you and your son and your family.

    Height: 5'11" (180cm)
    Maintenance range: 75kg (+/- 2.5 kg)

    Weight lost: 86kg to 80 kg (January-August 2012); 85 kg to 69 kg (October 2014 - March 2016); 88kg to present weight (May 2020 - now)
maintained (i.e. was below 77.5 kg, and mostly below 75 kg) from February 2015-July 2017; was then put on a medication and gained 2 kg in a month; went on sabbatical (away from scales; lots of conference meals); hit (peri-)menopause and lost track of things except to note that I was steadily gaining and back to 85/86 kg.
Lost to 81 kg at Easter 2020 (top of normal bmi for me), but then gained back to 88 kg in April/May (Easter egg binge; lock down closed the pool...).
    Average weight October 2014 - September 2015: 75.72 kg
    Average weight October 2015 - September 2016: 72.33 kg
Average weight October 2016 - September 2017: 76.82 kg - monthly average mostly within maintenance range (74.82 - 77.86 kg) for the first 10 months, then >79 kg in August and September
    Average weight October 2017 - March 2018: 80.90 kg

Average weight recorded for March 2021 currently: 76.10 kg

Successes: I am tracking food again and am also off alcohol and chocolate for Lent. Very much enjoying exercise! After the peak in February, I seem to be definitely moving back towards goal, i.e. the middle of my maintenance range. So I intervened successfully! This is very satisfying psychologically as much as anything else. I am really hoping to see an average below 76kg again this month.

Struggle/Success: Things were better this past week, lots of yoga, steps were decent and eating was not fervent :-) When I see a lower weight on the scale it seems to be a trigger to eat more. Experimenting with what foods work best to keep sugar cravings at bay.

Thanks so much for getting the March Check In thread up and running @425Recess

Success: implemented successful plan March 6, “lost” 1.3lbs water. (Too much food, too much salt, too much sugar the prior week.) Eating 6 times a day with set mealtimes until back in “remission”

Struggles: embarrassed, but know that feeling is part of this “chronic relapsing disease” so here I am posting away :)
Take that, obesity.🤣 You are not winning this time.

A while back someone on MFP suggested a book on maintenance that took a very Frank approach “we live in a hostile food environment “ must treat this like a battle.. “always normal weight folks vs formerly overweight normal wt folks”

Does ANYONE REMEMBER the TITLE or AUTHOR?

Successes/struggles of the week: I think I'm going to adjust my steps goal upward a bit again (I'll start with 500 steps more per day and see if that's good). Although I've seen a few weights around 110.5 lbs, where I prefer to be, I seem to be staying in the 111-111.5 range, so I think that a minor adjustment to my activity level should move things back in the direction I'd like again.

Love that quote @MadisonMolly2017 ! I was describing maintenance to someone today as being in remission from the disease of obesity. But we have to manage our disease carefully, if we relapse, the disease will return. Thinking of it as a manageable disease, which it truly is, takes all the shame and judgment away. We have a prescription to keep us healthy, we just need to adhere to the regimen.

Yes @speyerj so true! To me “maintenance” IS that vigilance, and knowing how to quickly turn it around... and tons of self-knowledge.

A combination of our cat getting very sick, having to wrestle with euthanasia, and grief over our long term companion combined with heart symptoms, ER, more tests, uncertainty, combined with very uncomfortable (itching, now pain) husband going through 2 month scalp preventative treat for pre cancers ...Upset the balance. I told myself all the things I have all along “Food won’t fix it” “Enjoy every bite” and I nodded then ate more nuts, or sweets. The tough part was it did help (old habits still there under the surface) initially, but then I’d feel queasy etc.

What finally worked...? I rested. I spoke on phone with friends. Went to sleep earlier. Got husband to put sweets in car outside. Hit a new high weight for 2021. Ate a bunch of cookies that didn’t even taste good. Total waste of calories. And advice from @summerskier to just move on (ie don’t try to eat less by the 400 I was over) and eat at maintenance the next day. I added to that a modified “protein pacing” WOE that means I never go more than 3 hrs without food from 10:00 to 9:00 & has me eating smaller “meals”. I set times for these meals too. So nothing for me to decide. Eating times are alarms on my phone & calories are spread 700 calories combined for 1st two, 2nd two, and 3rd two.

It sounds strict, but the T’s lots of room in there while further reducing my stress.

Obesity as a “chronic relapsing disease” is from Harvard. I have to say their Set Point work & their widespread research that losing & re-gaining is worse for your body were, sadly, HUGE reasons I stopped trying to lose wt for a long period of time. I regret that.

    Successes/struggles:
I’ve been trying an experiment – less exercise – hoping to lift my weight slightly, and break the possibly unhealthy reliance on exercise. I only started on Friday so it’s only been 3 days but I have managed to significantly reduce my cardio and step count. So far, the weight has not increased but at least it has stabilised. My Libra trend line is very slightly pointing up.

Looking at the posts from @MadisonMolly2017 and @speyerj I agree that this is a lifelong battle for some of us. I have been managing the condition for nearly 50 years. I have mostly kept under the "obese" measurement (BMI 30) but have yo-yo'd in and out of the overweight category several times. My current situation – in the lower range of “normal” BMI – is a new one but probably related to the Covid restrictions and my son’s illness. Time will tell how it develops as the restrictions are lifted.

Success: Back to goal weight. I did have another celebration meal this week. Hubby and I went out to lunch at a dine-in restaurant to celebrate being two weeks beyond our second covid vaccine. I have to stop these celebrations but at least this didn't cause a weight gain.

Struggle: I still get "I want to eat" attacks ever so often. I am better at talking myself through them. I'm not hungry. Just want to eat. There isn't anything in particular that I want to eat. I just want to eat. I like the quote from @MadisonMolly2017 of thinking of this as remission to the disease of obesity. It takes work, determination, and skill.

Successes: I am tracking food again and am also off alcohol and chocolate for Lent. I am also consciously eating a lot of vegetables and very much enjoying a combination of BodyFit by Amy workouts and rowing! This is yesterday's weigh-in, posted a day late (I had a crazy day with work yesterday, and forgot to log in here). The month average is to today though, and this morning I weighed in at 74.9 kg, which is below my goal weight. If i can keep this up (or, rather, down) I will be on track to have my average weight somewhere close to 75 kg by the end of March. That is when I shall really consider myself to be maintaining.

Reflection: The six weeks off tracking in January and February seem to have acted as a good reset. I did gain weight over that period, but it has come off again quickly and I feel much better about where I am. It felt like quite a struggle before Christmas.

    @figurethefat
But please note that you DID post! Hooray!!

We all respond to weather changes differently. I’m sorry that it’s not a season you enjoy as much. I’m the opposite - love when summer ends as I don’t do well with heat.

I wonder if there’s something g each of us can do yo make our less-enjoyed season be a happier time for us?

Success: Logged everyday, including last weekend to which I 100% owe the drop in poundage this week. It's making me think that maybe I should keep this up and think about intentionally eating at a 250 calorie deficit to drop another 10 pounds.
Struggles: Resisting the temptation to rest on my laurels and indulge myself - especially after an intense workout.

    Total Weight lost: 35 kg
Time it took to lose: 12 months
How long in maintenance: Since April 2016 - but gained 10 kg March-May 2020 after massive trauma combined with COVID-19.
Maintenance weight range: 65-75 kg (not sure what’s the right answer - been up and down in there numerous times in my life, apart from going way over 2010-2015).
I’d like to lose a bit to get back to 70 kg, but I’m still happy at around 75 kg.

I’m experimenting with seeing how my satiety levels are in relation to the types of foods I eat. Trying to eat more whole foods, which I’ve been getting pretty good at, and less sugar, and it’s going quite well.
Weekly averages checking day for me is Sunday.

Successes/struggles of the week: My weight has stayed the same since last week. I ate quite a few high calorie meals, so I wasn't really expecting any changes this week. Hopefully I'll start seeing a downward trend again in the weeks to come.

Success/Struggles: Still maintaining at just under 115. Just have to keep reminding myself that I was trying to get back up to 114/115 instead of 112/113 so this is good.

Very careful tracking of 2,100 cals/day with my regular long walks/hikes is working. Almost back to my Maintenance range! 3 meals & 3 snacks worked.

    We are warriors.

Struggle: I had several moments when I really wanted to eat for no reason and had to do some self talking to get by it.
