Machka: Could your situation be the beginning of menopause? I had hot flashes for a while and then they went away. WIN!
Katla in NW Oregon
I'm hoping I'm nearing the end.
According to my gynaecologic-oncologist, I started perimenopause at about 41. I've been going through the process for 13 years now.
I've had hot flashes occasionally throughout the 13 years -- 2 or 3 a day for a while, then a month or two without, then 2 or 3 a day again. Since 2018 I have had numerous hot flashes every day.
And now this heat thing has flared up in the past 18 months or so ... and it's getting old. I don't mind it at home, but it is uncomfortable at work when I've got to dress up a bit and it is really uncomfortable on the bus or other places that don't have good ventilation.
I am starting to think about carrying water and maybe little ice packs or something.

Thanks, for the tip, Karen.
Just read that Larry McMurtry died today. He was by any standard the best Texas writer ever--Horseman Pass By, which you might remember as the movie Hud, Lonesome Dove, The Last Picture Show, Terms of Endearment, and the screenplay to Brokeback Mountain among many, many others.

Did a spinning workout today. The plan for tomorrow is to do an Essential Pilates DVD
After exercise went to this lady in SC who has ceramic bisque. Not like I need more but I really wanted this one piece and I thought I’d better get it just in case she no longer has it. Then it started <drum roll please>...the two covers on the pool and the cover for the spa came off. Yes, it revealed my St. Patrick's Day pool. The furniture is out and so are some of the ceramics.
M – thanks for telling me what a DSD means. They certainly wouldn’t want me for that job. And not that I’d want it, either. It’s not exactly a 4hr job, and I really don’t want to work all day.
Vgetskinny – welcome! Please do post your exercise, I’m always looking for something new. Hope to get ideas
Heather – congrats on your website
Just watched the show “Clue” by the Green Room but saw it virtually. I really like doing it that way.

I tried everything--used my silicone mitts on it, ran the lid under hot water, popped the bottom to loosen the vacuum, hit the lid gently with the back of a knife around the edge to loosen. I did everything except hit the edge of the lid on the counter, which I simply won't do with a glass jar. Grf. He walks in and pops it open.
You loosened it for him!
I have one of those OXO jar openers. It works on most jars for me. I have seriously lost strength in my right hand since my stupid finger injury/surgery.0 -

Heather - We aren’t sticking strictly to government guidelines either. I have talked to my administrator at work about it. I thought it was only appropriate since I work in LTC. Our Grandkids are not in school in person. Jonah is doing online learning. Michaela has not started school and my daughter doesn’t work. Their Dad works but they follow all protocols as he works in a dairy. My husband has been home and I’m vaccinated. She said, she saw no problem with us having the kids.
Evelyn - nice to see you pop in. I suffered when my Dad passed too. If I’m being truthful though this year has been very tough with all of the deaths. I have not had any family pass, thankfully, but we had several in the home so it’s hard not to reflect and empathize with how all the families had have suffered.
Lisa - I was no where near as sick as you, but have really found it a hard pill to swallow since I have had so many restrictions. I am still not able to bend or squat without pain. I hate cooking too, but feel that a big part of it is because I’m so fussy I don’t know what goes together and I won’t try new recipes if I don’t like some of the ingredients.
Machka - I read the article you shared, could it be anxiety? You have been under so much stress since 2018. Maybe you need to find some ways to relax.
It has taken me all evening to read comment on the few above.
The Grandkids and I stopped at the grocery store on the way home to get a salad and maybe dessert. We ended up spending $75 in about 5 minutes and have more junk in the house than we’ve had for a long time.
My Grandson is 10 and hasn’t sat on my lap for probably 2 years now. Tonight he bought a game on my iPad called Plague Inc. he then sat on my lap for about an hour and a half while he destroyed the world with his plagues. I never play video games, the last one I played was Tetris on the Nintendo my husband had in the 90’s. Jonah asked me to tell play with him and I couldn’t refuse. It was a nice evening with him. His sister and I will have some time tomorrow. She was too busy digging all of her toys out tonight. Here is a “news headline” from his game and a picture of him on my lap.
What an incredible day, my heart is happy.4 -
Got notice from doctor's office that I was eligible for Covid vaccine and to make an appointment. I am scheduled for next Wednesday. I am getting the J and J so just one shot. Looking forward to having it done.
Son left this morning for San Diego. He is in Redding CA tonight. He is working on new drug for cancer. Says so far in their research they have cured 3 mice. I guess that is a good start. I will miss having him close by but glad he is happy with what he is doing. Barbara we are about 1 and 1/2 hours from Canadian border and he will now be about that from the Mexican border.
Happy birthday Barbie.

Gorgeous day, beautiful hike with stunning views. My friend T commented on how blessed we are to live 7 minutes away from such unspoiled nature. She is so very patient with my pace. She stands by to help me through the hard parts, slippery down slopes, crawling under fallen trees. Oh and she showed me my first two geocaches It took us 2.5 hours to go 2.7 miles, and a couple of times I was not confident. This was an “easy” 1.9 mi/153 ft elevation gain hike so oops, we overshot and missed the path down to the beach. We’ll try again another time, from the other end, leaving Shadow at home and bringing my sticks. Came home, ate lunch, crashed for 4 hours. Got up, did dishes, checking in here, but can barely keep eyes open so just skimmin’
Welcome @Vgetskinny! Would you let us know what you’d like to be called and your general locale?
Tracey loved hearing about your GS snuggling with you while he used the plague to destroy the known world. So healing for you both! The juxtaposition of his headline and your “my heart is happy” tag line made me smile

Barbara - What a fabulous walk! So glad you have a friend to go with. I'm also nervous if I'm not sure of my footing, always have been. One slip and my knee is f....d for months. Until recently DH would go off on all sorts of scrabbling pathways, but he has to be more cautious these days.
Sue in WA - What great work your son is doing. At the moment, any distance is much like another. My son in Nottingham might as well be on the moon! When restrictions lift you will have a great place to visit.
This morning I woke up early again. Never mind, it gives me a chance to check in here, and I shall take DH his cup of tea early so we can have breakfast and get ready for the beach. Weather chilly, but sunny.
I've wrapped DDIL's present and got some brownies out of the freezer last night.
I was so touched that they asked DH to have a grandfatherly stroll and chat with Max sometime this weekend. I am married to a very special person.
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx2 -

Vgetskinny wrote: »May I join the chat threads? Good Morning and HELLO ladies in March! I am a lifelong Yo-Yo girl, and continuing my struggles/successes today. I have recently started walking outside again (hello sunshine! ) and logging my calories and nutrients. It is SO easy for me to wander in to the fridge or pantry and just munch several times a day while I work remotely. So I have gained (more than) my COVID-#19. But I am on the right track again now, and just working every hour of every day to stay there. I am setting timers to help me eat a healthy mix of carbs and protein every 2-3 hours. I am focusing on ADDING protein and water and healthy comfort items like hot tea, walking, warm baths, reading, and getting good sleep (with my cuddly blanky). I'm one of those who has been doing this long enough to know what to do, I just keep being inconsistent and I stop doing it. I figure if I keep trying, it will eventually stick! Unfortunately, after maintaining a 30 lb loss for almost two years, I took COVID-19 as some kind of "last meal" type "free pass" to just eat whatever I wanted. But I am making no excuses,. What's done is done. Now I am ready to make better choices. So I am hoping this group will help me feel accountable and excited.
I love to post my exercise and that type of thing.
I used to do Calorie King, which I enjoyed very much for years. Any helpful tips on this community or other fun threads will be appreciated! ~V

Lisa - I hate cooking too, but feel that a big part of it is because I’m so fussy I don’t know what goes together and I won’t try new recipes if I don’t like some of the ingredients.
Tracey - am also one of the picky eaters club, and honestly, if I only tried recipes where I liked all the ingredients would never cook at all!

We headed out for a bicycle ride this afternoon. The rain was supposed to be gone by about noon ... and it had cleared a little.
We managed 4 km before the rain began again! So we returned home and cycled inside.
Someone asked about flooding here. There is a lot of flooding on the mainland, but less here. I haven't heard about any significant property damage here. Nevertheless one area got 276 mm (10.8 inches) in 24 hours so I'm sure the rivers in that area were pretty high!

Husband in hospital with pancretitis. I went through and am taking most of the sugary high fat food over to son's for now. I figure if they are out of sight less likely he wil eat them. He likes his 1-2 drinks a day, chips, cookies, sausage, bacon. ice cream. Most of these I don't eat. I don't drink for one. He will be in hospital 3-4 days.
He just came back from a trip from visiting friends from highschool. I don't think eating out for four days helped.
He drove himself to emergency room when I was out walking Drew. They gave him directions to a clinic that closed and he was in a bad state when I got a hold of him. I offered to drive him if he came home. Stubborn he did not. When I called the correct clinic they told me they could not tell me if he made it because of the Hippa Laws. He was not answering his Phone. Not a top ten day.
Today the weather is going to be perfect and I intend to enjoy it. I will go visit him in the morning and after dinner.
Wake up call for me. I still eat too much ice cream and chocolates. I went on a low sugar diet before. I lost weight and felt better.11 -

Just starting this program. Have a cruise scheduled for May 2022 to Alaska. I want to be able to walk or do excursions without getting winded. I don't want to avoid doing something that looks like fun but know I won't be able to keep up or I won't fit into the seat, etc. I can't believe I let myself get this big. I can't blame anyone but myself. I am not a fan of exercise so that will be a struggle to make sure I do something each day. I love sweets and carbs so trying very hard to reduce those. Need to find ways to increase veges into each meal but making sure it is easy because I hate to be in the kitchen prepping and cooking too much. Now you know how I put on so much weight. I worked from age 21 to 45'ish doing everything to keep my weight down. I worked out and ate healthy. I had a full hysterectomy at age 36 and quit smoking at age 40. Around age 45 I started putting on weight even though I was still working out and eating healthy. I retired at age 50 and the activity I once had from working and taking the train to the city and then walking to my office was reduced drastically. From that point on, I kept gaining weight slowly and by age 55, I was considered obese at the Dr. office. I have tried a few things but nothing ever sticks when I have to work too hard at it. I finally have a goal with the upcoming cruise so I am hoping this will stick.

Heather: Thanks for sharing the beach photo! What a lovely place for your grandchildren to play with their dad.
Machka: "Give yourself Permission to do the things You Enjoy" Wonderful advice!!! I love seeing your photos. You live in a beautiful area.
Lisa & Tracey: Add DH & me to the picky eater group. I am lactose intolerant, but lactose free milk is now available at the grocery store. DH is not able to digest gluten so we’ve made lots of substitutions in our bread and pasta choices. I can have a grilled cheese sandwich on sourdough bread whenever I want. His grilled cheese sandwich is on gluten free bread. Brown rice is something we both enjoy and we also have brown rice pasta in our pantry.
Margaret: I am so sorry that your DH is in the hospital. I hope he gets better soon. :flowerforyou:
Tinaonmove: Welcome to a supportive group. Best advice—let myfitnesspal determine your allowed calories and stick with it. As your weight goes down, the calories you’re allowed will also go down. You can do this! Stop by here often to give and get support.
