Is There a Way

Is there a way to use a recipe in a recipe?
For example, tomorrow night I’m using two servings of homemade carnitas and four servings home homemade no-fry refried beans in a casserole with other ingredients.
I fully expect it to make 4-6 servings. I can do the awkward division, but it would be nice to just use partial portions of the original recipes as part of the new recipe.
Suggestions?
And, is it possible to copy an entire recipe? So I don’t have to tweak my poor muffin, cobbler or pancake recipe every time I change it up?

God i wish we could use recipes in recipes, that would be so convenient. Being able to copy recipes would also be aces.3

I agree it would be amazing if we could use a recipe in a recipe!
I make an Italian Tomato Sauce in large batches and freeze it in individual portions. It then gets used in so many other recipes and it frustrates the heck out of me that I can’t input it as an ingredient.
The only two work-arounds I’ve come up with are;
- figure out the calories in the amount I’m using by ‘pretending’ to add the sauce to my diary, then, within the second recipe search for a generic entry for tomato sauce and fiddle with the quantity until it comes out as the same calories as the sauce I’m actually using. Obviously, no use if you’re worried about the macros etc, but it works as far as calorie counting your dish.
- adding a ‘note’ in the title of the recipe you’re making along the lines of ‘add 62g Italian Tomato Sauce to diary separately’. Which reminds me that I had to omit it from the recipe and how much of the sauce made it to each portion so I can still log it accurately.0 -
I never use the recipe builder, I create my recipes as meals, which means you can mix as you like. Downside is that you have long lists of ingredients in your diary and, in your case, you'd have to create meals to replace your recipes, not sure how much of a hassle that is.0

Sorry, maybe I don't understand the problem. I just log in the portion of my old recipe that I've used, and then add the other ingredients. If it's something I do often, I'd just make a new recipe, or make a recipe of the other ingredients.2

Muffins for example. I try to experiment with ways to get calories down. So one time I might use applesauce and egg whites in lieu of oils and eggs. And I might add a shredded apple and cinnamon one week, bkueberries the next, chocolate chips and cashew milk the next. It would be nice to be able to copy the basic recipe and then be able to tweak and save it.
It would also be nice to have a “flag” of some kind for particularly successful versions or recipes.
Some of my recipes (carnitas, lasagna) have a lot of ingredients. If I’m reusing the carnitas in another dish, it would just be a lot more convenient to start a new dish and “add” two servings of “my own” carnitas recipe.
As long as I’m making a wish list, it would also be fabulous if the recipe builder defaulted to products I use often like it does in the daily log. Even a change as simple as that would make entering a recipe a hella it easier. That way I don’t have to search a bazillion types of tomato paste, sauces or spice mixes. It would automatically know I’ve used “lidl crushed tomatoes” which I’ve already checked for accuracy.0 -

You know, I sympathize, but the way things are going on the site, I don't think your wish will come true. This morning I can't log into Home, for instance, and for months I have to try at least 3 times to get in to each category to log in my food. It's not like MFP is a well-oiled machine.
I cook from scratch every day, and I just break down most of my dishes. Like pasta--everyday I make it a different way and just log in 100g pasta, 20g mushrooms, 2 tsp EVOO, 2 tablespoons Parmigiano, 1 tbl white wine, etc.......... Whatever I decided to make. I do the same thing with restaurant meals--I just break them down. I have some recipes that I always make the same way and those are in my recipe file.
Could things be improved on the food base and recipes---Oh Yessss!!! Will I see it in my lifetime? Not much hope.3 -

I still feel using Meals instead of Recipes would help you a lot with what you want to do Easy to copy meals and then tweak them, combine several meals for a new recipe, etc.2 -
@Lietchi do you know I’ve never even seen “meals” before. 😶
So it looks like you can use it identically to “recipes” except that it gives you the option to copy, and presumably you can edit and rename the copies?0 -

Well, for copying I tend to just add the existing saved meal to a future date in my diary, change what I want to change there, and then save that meal under a new name. (And then delete the ingredients from my diary)
One difference with recipes is that there is no field to enter the number of servings. I just add the weight of the final dish to the name of the meal and when I log my portion in my diary, I check the name of the meal to see if I should log 0.5 or 0.25 of that meal, or whatever fraction is applicable.1 -

When a Meal populates to your FOOD diary, it appears as a list of ingredients. You then edit portion, add or subtract any new or deleted ingredients. I far prefer "Meals" over Recipes. I only have maybe six or seven Recipes entered and they are just sauces or items I never change like soups or relishes.
Love Meals. You can then still use a Recipe added to the Meal on the FOOD diary. I do that with my spaghetti sauce because I don't change it, but I do change what it is poured over.
*edit you can name your Meals "Recipes" if you want...it makes it easier to search for it in the database. "Meals" will appear in a database search, BTW. Name them carefully and you can find them easily.0 -
@Lietchi Thanks! I tried it as a meal today and was able to add the earlier carnitas, beans, and a bunch of other stuff. I didn’t know that was available. Super helpful!!!!!0

So, I learned something from this question, too. I’ve never really used the ‘Meals’ section but have been often frustrated by the inability to include a ‘recipe’ in another ‘recipe’.
However....I’m hoping someone could walk me through the inherent maths in using the ‘Meals’ function for a batch of food. I’ve made a Soya Mince Bolognese this morning which I was able to enter as a ‘Meal’ including my base Tomato Sauce ‘Recipe’. Obviously, I’m not going to eat the entire ‘Meal’ so how do I use the entry to log a portion?
Let’s say the entire batch weighs 750g and I eat 80g? In the Recipe section I’d make the recipe contain 750 servings and log 80 servings, but I’m coming up blank as to how to make that work in ‘Meals’!
Disclaimer: Yes, yes, I am actually blonde but not usually this stupid! 😂1 -

It sounds like you just have a little mental block.
If it would help you, rename your Bolognese Sauce (Meal) as, "My Bolognese Sauce Recipe MEAL." But it's actually already saved as a Meal - you're just renaming it to get over this mental block.
Then when you enter today's Dinner, search for, "My Bolognese Sauce Recipe MEAL," in the database or your list. Add that in the portion you want just like any other food from the database. THEN go ahead and add whatever other stuff you're going to eat. The sauce would be sort of like a recipe but since it's part of a new meal it would have to be edited each time if you're going to change the sauce in some major way - just like with a recipe. The rest would be part of the new "Meal" and you can get the pasta and bread and salad in there if you want - which you could then rename the whole Meal, (like as, "My Spaghetti dinner favorite MEAL") if you want.
When you then use it again all the items (ingredients) will populate line by line.
Just play around with your FOOD page. It will make sense once you use a Meal.

If the total cooked product weighs 750gr and you consumed 80, divide 80 by 750 and log 0.1066666666666666 of the saved meal.

Thank you both!
@cmriverside - That’s helpful, I don’t think I’ve ever really understood the functionality of ‘Meals’ before now. But now I see how much time it could save - didn’t realise you could edit each line after it’s in the diary, and delete/augment on the fly. I’d figured it was a fixed element that posted a single line entry, just as the recipes do. 🤷♀️
@Lietchi - that’s exactly what I needed to see! And now I do see the necessary maths written down I don’t know why I couldn’t figure it out! 🤯😂
Much appreciated!1 -
Yeah, IMO Meals are much more useful than Recipes in most cases.

I would only go to all that trouble with a Recipe.
Using a Recipe as a saved Meal component: I just don't use recipes unless it's something I always make exactly the same way (such as a Bolognese.).
A "Recipe" saved into a Meal will still only list the Recipe as a one-line item with the sum of its particular calories and macros on any future diary entries.
You really just have to play with it to figure out all the little quirks/features/benefits and decide what will work best for you. I rarely use "Recipes."0 -

I use this method for all my cooked meals, since I always share my meals with my BF and he doesn't eat the same quantities as me. I don't see any (accurate) alternative 😁2 -

I just meant *IF* I added a "recipe" to a SAVED meal, that would be when I would use the percentage. Otherwise, I'd have to do the percentage on every line item (i.e. ingredient) on a Meal when entered into the diary.
I still use a (for instance) Bolognese sauce that I have saved as a Recipe in (for instance) a saved "Spaghetti with Bolognese" Meal.
But I don't WANT to edit the sauce (which populates as a one-line item) because I've already saved it as 250g per serving and that doesn't deviate, and I always serve up 250g. If it did change, in the Meal, then yes - I'd do your percentage thing.
So I wasn't arguing, I simply use a slightly different, fixed portion.

I make a homemade veg soup every day, often with Chix bone broth, or beans, and I vary the ingredients daily. What I do is post that day's recipe in LUNCH, even though I eat it as a snack, dinner, etc. in addition to my other foods. If I really like that day's version I save it in My Meals. Most of the ingredients I use are already in my Frequent Foods list, so I just look up and add (or delete) as needed. I also try to use (and find) grams rather than other measurements, cause how do you measure a cup of carrots?? But I'm not super, super picky, I just want to make sure I'm not kidding myself. Yes, it all takes time. I usually plan most of my meals a day ahead. I shop every other day. It's all a learning experience, and yes, takes time.0

It sounds like you mostly add them from the Meals tab on the Add Food. (?) When I use a saved Meal, I just do a search and add it from the database (I have hundreds of "meals" and the way I name them helps)...and if it has a Recipe embedded in the Meal I can then adjust JUST the Recipe part by percentage.
Two different ways to get to the same result.
You have to play with it. I'm a little embarrassed to say it took me years to figure out...If I can shorten someone's learning curve, that's my good deed for today.0 -
I'm still not seeing what you're talking about 😁
To add a meal to my diary, I first create it (the whole dish, which might be similar to one I've create before, or I start from scratch) and then I add the fraction/percentage that I actually ate to my diary.
Edit: I don't use recipes at all, so that part really means nothing to me lol.0 -

We both have our ways. Neither is right nor wrong!

The bolded is a really good point and one I’d not yet considered, although I can see I may run into the issue in the future with using ‘Recipes’ inside ‘Meals’. I edit the base Italian Tomato Sauce ‘Recipe’ every time I make a batch, to account for differing sizes of onions etc. So I guess I’ll have to delete and re-enter the amended ‘recipe’ entry in the ‘meal’ every time I’ve made a new batch!
I do realise this all sounds a bit of an obsessive pursuit for accuracy btw! 😂 Old, very short and down to the last 3lbs, so this sort of accuracy is necessary! 🤯

Yeah, I tried using recipes when I kept reading suggestions to new members to use that option. But after a few attempts, it was just too much hassle and quickly reverted to meals again 🙂0 -
BarbaraHelen,
See, I could get that macro if I wanted, but my spaghetti sauce is so frequently in the rotation that it's not worth it to me to worry about a few extra grams of olives or onion or mushrooms. I use the same amount of meat and tomatoes, same garlic, and close enough on the other stuff.
I've been at maintenance weight for years and some stuff is just too much trouble. This is one of those things. Spaghetti sauce. Too frequently used and I'm willing to be "off" by 50 calories on the sauce. Not one gram more than 50g on the pasta, though!0
