:)five different veggies I buy frozen mixed vegetables (corn, green beans, carrots, peas) and add some limas and steam them in a saucepan on the stove and voila---five veggies every day.

:)Sleep, I learned a long time ago that I can't make myself sleep when my body has different ideas, so I just go with the flow. There's a lot to do while lying awake--some of it is productive and some of it results in falling asleep again.

:) I listened to an episode of the podcast "The Sporkful" called "Cooking with a brain injury". It made me think of Machka's husband's challenges in processing life.

    Hi ladies!
My experience on cooking with a brain injury is use more crockpot and avoid fish. My attention span just isn't what it used to be!
My mom started an eye roast for Easter, but changed her mind when it was barely started. She put it back in the oven Monday night, and again lost patience and took it out. It's still largely raw but it's spent so much time at warm temperatures that I'm afraid to eat it. Such a shame to waste it though.

Teddy boo was snoring last night, and barking in his dreams. But I'd rather be awake some nights than alone.

    Have a great day!

I was curious, so I'm listening to it.
Emotions: yep - huge mood swings, over-responding to situations with laughter or tears, misunderstanding things and getting upset.
I don't know if his hearing is bad or if it is because he can only focus on one thing at a time plus his short term memory isn't good, but he'll often misunderstand things because he either didn't hear it or didn't grasp it all.

Cooking: he was the main cook in our relationship and has continued to make dinners, but I (the person who doesn't cook!) had to teach him what to do again. Even now, if I want something different, it's a huge challenge. He wants to help and contribute, which is great. So I've got to convince him it's OK for me to make it first and if it is something he would like to make too, he can watch. Then I'll help him next time if he needs help. I'm going to attempt a Greek salad soon and see how he goes with me making it first. I tried to help him with a meal while we were away and that was a bit of a disaster mainly because he couldn't understand why I was helping.
Oh ... I smiled when she mentioned that the onions were still raw even though she thought she was cooking them ... I ate raw potatoes quite frequently in his first few months home!

Shopping/Restaurants, etc.: quite often too overwhelming for him. That's one of the main reasons why we order our groceries. We've also walked out of restaurants because they've been too busy for him. He's probably fortunate that I don't like crowds and noise either.

Perseveration: She mentioned perseveration, and my husband experiences this although it is different from what she experienced. He has "pet stories" he tells, but mainly when he is stressed. There's more to it than that, and it's difficult to explain fully ... the same sort of things (phrases, references, etc.) crop up in just about every conversation even if they aren't applicable.

And one other thing she mentions ... the bit about an invisible injury. My husband doesn't look like he has a brain injury, so people expect him to understand everything that happens in day-to-day life. Sadly, I've seen sales people etc. get mad at him or impatient with him because he doesn't understand something and can't express himself very well. Of course, the more stressed he gets, the greater the chance he'll have difficulty understanding, so the situation deteriorates quickly.

Did my 5k run. :D Chilly but bright.
On the way home we stopped at the butchers to buy sausages to go with the roast veg. Of course, I bought Scotch Eggs, escalopes and goats cheese as well. They are so sweet in there. Paul was fantastic during the strict lockdown, doing same day deliveries.
Then I saw celeriac next door st the deli, so bought that with a huge potato to make mash another day. Added some fresh green beans to the basket. Lettuce, the world's best cottage cheese, and, at the last minute a Polish type sausage for my sauerkraut dish. DH carried it while I ran the last 100 yards home.
I'm going to mash some peas tonight, so there will be at least 5 roast veg, plus potato.

Now to look at the cabins.

Pat C OHIO: Congrats on your medical results!!! :star:

Tracey: My daughter’s situation is different than ours. She is a mental health professional. She works with challenged young adults who live in a group care facility after having been sent there by the courts. In her role there, she was vaccinated very early on when the pandemic was just getting going. Her home is on an acreage with plenty of room for social distancing on a sunny day. :star: We live in a townhouse community. We have now been fully vaccinated and we are still very cautions. We chat with neighbors from at least 5 feet away. :flowerforyou:.

Pip: I love the photos of your pup and your new rig.

Lisa: I am also no fan of snakes. We had a neighbor some years ago who thought it was funny that I was afraid of snakes, so she deliberately caught them & put them on our lawn. I am thankful that that she has moved away. The family that now owns that townhouse is delightful. YAY!!! In your situation, I would seal off the cat door. Egg can meow to get in and you can choose to let him in if he is snake free.

Machka: DH has balance issues and we had a plumber come and install heavy duty grab bars in the tub and shower area. DH can now hold on as needed, confident that his weight will be supported. The bars look fine and are very sturdy. Your bathroom photo looks excellent, but It is hard to know whether the grab bar under the window would support your DH’s weight, or whether there is a grab bar in the shower enclosure. :flowerforyou:

I am looking forward to getting some of my favorite activities back. I want to go out to the stable and visit Arrow, and I would love to go back to the fitness club. We have been in lockdown so long that it is hard to figure out how to begin resuming loved activities.

Not impressed. I've been on hold for 40 minutes so far, listening to 70s pop songs. This is meant to be a priority number!
    Feel like giving up. Grrrr!

The TV didn't come on until about 7 pm. :)

    Machka in Oz

I love not having the TV on. It hasn't been on since last Tuesday evening. I need to work on less computer and phone screen time.

That's one of the things I like about cycling. It's too hilly to go right from home, so we drive to better locations and then ride ... a weekend ride can take me away from my computer for 3 or 4 hours! :)

    M in Oz

I'm envious you can take your bikes elsewhere. Mine won't fit in my car and there isn't a hitch and ball rack for it yet. I don't want one that hangs off the back. My bike is heavy and those are not as sturdy. Our roads around here are atrocious and dangerous for biking. I'd love to take them where there are better surfaces.

    Tina in CA

We buy vehicles with cycling in mind. :)

When we went looking for our most used van, the #1 criteria was ... it must be able to hold at least 2 bicycles inside. It can actually hold 4 if 2 of them are our folding bikes.

    Machka in Oz

I actually researched the bike rack before I bought the car. But, since I wanted a plug in hybrid, my choices were limited and other things were priority, such as distance using electric power only. I think a hitch will come out soon, though.

Machka: I just was reminded by DH that he purchased a collapsable walker without wheels. He used that walker for balance support in our shower area. Perhaps your DH can use one that is similar. 😇

On a slightly personal note: I am not sure what is up with my hubby not showering. I don't think he has showered in a week or more and he is getting slightly smelly. lol (laughing, but not laughing). I am not sure if it is him losing track of when he last showered, or thinking he doesn't need one because it's not hot out and he doesn't move around much... I am wondering if it is getting hard for him to get in and out of the shower (he needs to step into the tub and the sides are pretty high). Have any of you had to re-think or re-do your bathrooms due to advancing age and declining physical ability?

Well, I have to scoot. I need one more cup of coffee and have to get my trash to the curb. ttfn xoxox KJ (Kelly)

When we remodeled our bathrooms, we took growing old into consideration. There is just a small step for both showers. My bathtub is a deep soaking tub, so not really friendly for aging, but I like it now.

Did a body pump DVD today. Work tomorrow so no formal exercise, but I’m sure I’ll be able to get a lot of steps in since I plan to go out to the parking lot to get the carts.

Think I should wash and wax my car since it’s pretty nice out. While the wax is drying, I’ll put the paver sand down. Vince has an appointment with an allergy doctor and then a sleep specialist. If he gets back early, maybe we can wash the outside windows. I’ve already done the ones I can reach, and really the only ones I would like him to help me with are the ones in the front. So that shouldn’t take too long. Got dinner all ready to microwave

    Pat C – woo hoo!

Tracey – I did cook the meat and froze the leftovers. As a matter of fact, that’s what Vince is having for dinner tonight, all leftovers...lol I’m so sorry about your resident passing

I had this Vermont Teddy Bear exercise bear which I gave to the gal whose gym I go to for her birthday Saturday. Really, the kids aren’t going to be interested in it.

Lisa – if any of our cats ever brought in a snake, I would be out the door so fast you could see the smoke after me. Fortunately, our cats are only indoor cats. Just the thought gives me the willies

bananas – my weight is up a bit, too. And, like you, no surprise. I knew that I had too much of the meat for Easter. Well, it’s not a usual thing. I was going to have mac & cheese for Jess because I know she likes it. But since she wasn’t here, I’ll return it to the store since Vince won’t eat it and I really don’t want it.

I’m trying to think of different things to have for breakfast. I’d like it to include protein for the days when I go to work. Now that it’s getting warmer out, I would like something cool. Well, I’ll check people’s menus to see if I get any ideas.

Barbara – that image of a socially distanced bonfire for each person made me LOL

KJ – kids can be so honestly brutal. Have any of the kids said something to your hubby? I can easily see a kid saying “eww you smell”.

Getting first blood work today. Hopefully it will show what med I need. Having side effects from the thyroid surgery. All done by computer these days.
Prefer seeing the Dr to explain what is going on,but have no choice.
I’m such a wimp about needles & dread having it done, but another no choice. Excuse my whine!

    Pat C OHIO

I used to have a terrible phobia of needles and blood- would actually black out seeing it, THEN, had to go through infertility treatments. After so many months of shots(up to 36 in a week) and daily blood tests while taking the shots), I pretty much got over it. I had said I would never ever go through all of that but then when it came down to it- my only option so did it month after month.

Did my first Zumba and abs workout on Zoom with the teacher that did our in class Zumba, first in well over 6 months- 60 min of Zumba and 20 min abs workout- I pretty much kept up with zumba but didn't make it the 20 min on the abs(which is what I really need)- I wish there was a way to go back and watch again but dont think you can on Zoom.
Heading for the dentist in 20 min. It is just a teeth cleaning but I just want it over with- really don't like going, even though they are really gentle.
Need to take down and pack away all the Easter decorations- the yard is full of them.
    Have a great day ladies.

KJ - You can now get a shower with a full three-wall surround, shelves built in, that is the same size as a tub/shower combo, and fits in the same place. We did it that way due to my knee replacement. There's only about a three-inch step up, and a very minor sill... just one gotcha - we had to get a cloth shower curtain with a liner, as the curtain needs to actually get to the bottom with an inch or two extra to keep water in - and a plastic curtain is a hazard to step on. It turns out I like the cloth shower curtain so much better, so there's that.

    Well off to the Dr
