I like it raw, mixed with other greens in a salad. Cooked, not so much.1 -
Me, too Suzy. But I can’t even chop it for a salad. I have to buy the bagged salad mix because I want it chopped really, really fine.0

Instant mashed potatoes are actually really good.

I love canned peas4

I love this thread!
Rice pudding is vile! Any dessert that calls up rice and bread is disgusting - I'm looking at your bread and butter pudding. Spinach and pumpkin are the work of the devil. Wholemeal pasta should be banned. Eggs are overrated.
White rice, white bread, potatoes and pasta from normal, non-wholemeal flour are gifts from God1 -

We grew up on instant mashed potatoes: our mother worked fulltime, and they were a real time saver for her. While I do like mashed potato made from whole potatoes better, I have no complaint about instant.4 -
I never had them until I was an adult and they taste weird to me, but of course it makes sense it's what you are used to. My mom also worked fulltime, but mashed potatoes have always been something of a holiday/for company kind of dish for us. I love them, but make them rarely, even though they don't actually seem very time consuming.1

Regarding the 'fake' potatoes - I don't think I've ever had them. Perhaps at a crappy little diner during a road trip? How different are they to the real thing?0

I think that's unanswerable, more or less.
The plainer, cheaper brands IME can be IMO more starchy seeming (sort of dry despite containing liquid, in a weird way) compared to plain potatoes mashed (but also without a lot of added butter, milk, cream, etc.).
Some of the brands have odd things added to make the flavor supposedly richer, I guess. Some of those have an odd taste, to me.
Some brands I've had are not too bad, but to my taste, not as satisfying as real mashed potatoes. Part of it is that most are more a "whipped potato" texture, very smooth, and grew up eating mashed potatoes with a slightly less fully-smooth texture (but not full of chunks or anything). That's a personal preference issue, I think.
I used to keep some instant mashed potatoes around to thicken soups, or to have as the occasional spur of the moment side, since I don't usually buy potatoes (just don't eat them often enough). They're one of the things that started seeming not worth their calories when I started counting, so mostly I just wait and eat mashed potatoes at holiday meals.
I may be prejudiced by (1) having been brought up in a home where we never had instant, and (2) having gone to a school where many of the entrees were - believe it or not - gravy. Could be beef gravy, hamburger gravy, pork gravy, chicken gravy, whatever. You'd get a big heap of instant mashed potatoes (the cheap starchy kind) with a ladle-full of kind of poor gravy, with a few meat shreds in it. One of these was the lunch entree at least 1-2 times per week. It can put a person off the whole concept, I think. 🤷♀️5 -

They’re not “fake” potatoes. They are made of real potatoes, just dried, not fresh.
I don’t eat them on their own as a side, but I like certain stews and curries spooned over mashed potatoes, and they work very well for that.3 -

Ha! That's why I put the word in quotations😉
I could see using them as a thickener in stews -
Curious if they use them at places like Denny's/Perkins, etc., ?0 -
regarding instant potatoes... these are good too. find them in the deli or refreigerated section

When I had a wisdom tooth removed, I lived off of those Bob Evans mashed potatoes (and ice cream lol) and they are pretty good!1 -
I won’t eat instant mashed potatoes - I think they are gross and mashed potatoes are so quick and simple to make anyway it doesn’t even seem worth it. But I do like those cheesy boxes of dehydrated scalloped potatoes. Grew up eating them and although they are probably gross too to most people they seem like nostalgic comfort food to me.2

Instant mashed potatoes are a great shortcut for potato bread, and the finished product actually has a better texture than dough made with scratch-mashed potatoes, in my opinion.5

Going to get a lot of flak for this, but I think apples and grapes are more unhealthy than they are healthy3

I'm sure there are better options regarding fruit 'health' wise - am curious what makes you think apples and grapes are 'unhealthy'?
I rarely even eat fruit - just not my thing. I actually prefer vegetables for sure😉1 -
pancakerunner wrote: »Going to get a lot of flak for this, but I think apples and grapes are more unhealthy than they are healthy
I think it depends but over all for me grapes are ok if it's maybe 4 or 5. Apples I think are ok if they don't upset your stomach. It is really relative though for each person and where they are. I used to eat a ton of apples when I was much younger and a marathon runner but now I feel sick if I eat a whole apple.
I think that any meat consumed by average American is more detrimental and unhealthy because we are not the same as our ancestors plus the animals are much differently raised
. Don't get me started on factory farms...3 -
On that note...
I really dislike crunchy raw apples. I don't hate them, but would never have them unless there was absolutely nothing else to eat. I only like them cooked.0 -
I just think the amount of sugar in apples, grapes, mangos, pineapple, etc. is just a little much... even if they do have fiber

I don't like grapes that much (well, I like the green ones a lot, don't like the others all that much, although I don't dislike them, but in any case rarely buy them, because I prefer other fruit), and I mainly buy apples when I want to use them in savory dishes or they are among the only fruits available, but I think they are plenty healthy. But then I don't think sugar is some evil thing.
Most of my apples seem to come in as medium or small (80-100 cals), and a medium apple has 19 g of sugar, but so what? It has 16 g net carbs. It doesn't have huge amounts of any particular vitamin/mineral (good with C, but C is easy to get, okay amount of potassium and with potassium everything adds up), and of course some fiber.
For me, they are tasty (a perfectly adequate dessert, as with fruit in general) or a nice part of breakfast or a lovely side (again, sometimes in cooked format) or addition to a salad.
100 g of grapes are only 70 cal, 15.5 g of sugar, 17 g net carbs, and have (again) a variety of micros. I think generally one can get what fruit contributes if you eat plenty of vegetables, but since many of us find fruit delicious and a good alternative to more caloric sweet snacks, and of course far too many in the US don't actually eat many veg, I can't really see thinking fruit is unhealthy (unless one has bought into the idea that sugar is inherently bad, no matter what else it is packaged with).11 -

Ha....I'm the complete opposite for sure! The only apple I'd ever consume HAS to be very very crunchy....and I absolutely hate cooked apple 'anything' (bla to apple pie/baked apples, etc., ) Oh my...we're all so different! Love it🤣1 -
Yes we are different. I love raw apples, baked apples, “fried” apples. But applesauce is one of those foods I refuse to eat. Ever.1

black licorice as in all kinds is a gift from the gods and is fully underrated by you yanks.7

I'm in the middle -- I like both crunchy raw apples (raw ones must be crunchy), but I also like them cooked (both in apple pie or other dessert format or as a side dish with something like a pork chop (with onions and sauerkraut).3 -
Black licorice is terrible. You can have all of mine!
Local, in-season strawberries are wonderful. I am once again trying to grow my own, but I love going to the farmer's market and trying all the different varieties, although this year you can't really do that. I will buy various different ones, though.3 -
You can get all the protein a body needs without eating animals. I am putting this out there, even though I am NOT vegetarian.
Here we go! Everyone pile on now!9
