Got berated today at Planet Fitness for my mask

He is following the rules, he is wearing a mask. The purpose of the mask is to protect those around you and he wasn't near anyone. If you are still worried about Covid at this point, get your shot or stay at home.
But a hole in the mask makes it ineffective--right? Doesn't work? So why did he even bother? Because--rules. Some people are on a waiting list for a shot--like me, in another country. If he was complying why did they call him on it? Glad you're not in my gym.8 -

Please correct me if I'm confused about the vaccine and ability to still catch Covid. It was my understanding, even if you've been vaccinated, you can still catch it but just a milder version so you won't end up terribly sick. And/or you could still be a carrier and pass the virus onto others? They've told people all kinds of things and I'm confused as usual, so err on the side of caution.
FWIW I was fully vaccinated back in March and still will wear a mask, *especially* if a sign on a business tells me too. To me, it's common courtesy and respect.7 -

My understanding is that:
* much like all vaccines (particularly the annual flu vaccine), the COVID vaccines greatly reduce, but do not completely eliminate your chance of becoming infected by SARS-CoV-2 and becoming severely ill. It is not magic, your chances of catching COVID are not 0% but they're a damn sight closer to it once you are vaccinated. If you were already unlikely to become severely ill with COVID, then the odds are now even better for you.
* COVID has a very long incubation time, during which you may be asymptomatic but contagious - we've known this for almost the entirety of the pandemic. That never stopped being true. It stands to reason, then, that if even you are vaccinated, if you are exposed and that immunity from the vaccine prevents you from developing a severe infection, you may still be able to pass viral particles on to other people without ever feeling ill yourself.
* The US is still only about 30% vaccinated - that's not enough for herd immunity to protect people who haven't gotten the shot yet. I don't know about globally or if OP is in the US or not, but as far as I know not many countries are much above 50% yet.
* Therefore, even if you are fully vaccinated (both shots + 2 weeks), 2 out of every 3 people you encounter while going about your daily business are not; even if they are, they may have direct contact with people who are not or cannot be vaccinated, and you can't know if you're infected and posing a risk to those other people until it is far, far too late.
* And therefore, masking and distancing are still extremely necessary in indoor public spaces, because--call me crazy, but--I don't think anyone's grandma deserves to die horribly just so I can be slightly more comfortable in public.10 -

That was the experience in a long-term care home here (very vulnerable elderly population). The vaccinated residents still caught Covid, at least to the extent that they tested positive for the virus, but had either very mild symptoms or were completely asymptomatic. The virus definitely spread but impossible to tell to what extent it was transmitted by vaccinated or unvaccinated persons in that environment.
Contrast that with an earlier pre-vaccine long-term care home outbreak, which accounted for slightly more than a third of our total local Covid deaths.3 -

Okay so dumb question. Say a "checker" for the county spots you with no mask or hole in it. Then they watch to see if employees or management address the situation. If they don't and they report it to county, you'll likely first get a fine. Then shut down. It's NOT about convenience. It's about adhering to laws set forth. It's like speeding down a vehicleless road. So no one's around, but if HP sees you, they have every reason to ticket you for exceeding the limit and breaking the law......................regardless of what logical reasoning you may have.I am with the OP. If there was no one around you, then why does it matter? Glad the mask requirement is no longer a thing in my area.

Everywhere we go, there are rules to follow, whether it's at the personal, local, state, federal, universal, etc. levels. Why is wearing a mask such a difficult concept to understand and adhere to? I just don't get it??4

Yes, that is correct. With the vaccine you still have a 5% chance of becoming very sick -basically the same % chance without the vaccine.
Don't bring logic into this. People gonna freak out.

Good job for the gym employees staying vigilant and doing their job. I JUST joined the gym again but ONLY because I see how vigilant they are in maintaining safety standards. I am FULLY vaccinated and I still don't want to breath in the air others have exhaled. I can't prevent it 100%, but this is an easy one. Wear the mask or work out at home or at the park. It's not that serious.7

PF is the only game in town in some areas (or the only game in town that isn't $$$/month). My local area has a couple of Planets Fitness and several boutique gyms and studios, both general and focused on a particular sport (boxing, pilates, Crossfit, etc). Planet Fitness is ten bucks a month. The boutique gyms start at $50, for the crappy one across town that you can smell from the parking lot, full of 30-year-old equipment in various states of disrepair and weird stains on the floor. (Yeah, it's a Gold's, how did you guess?)4 -

Yes, that is correct. With the vaccine you still have a 5% chance of becoming very sick -basically the same % chance without the vaccine.
Please stop spreading lies. The actual percentage hovers around 19%. 14% of it is severe cases. 5% is critical cases.
You can go from "Oh I got Covid" to DEAD in 2 days. It doesn't matter if you are fit. It doesn't matter if you are eating tons of vitamin E. It doesn't matter if you can lift a car.
You need a freaking mask. What it comes down to is people being SO selfish they don't even care about themselves. And that is frightening. Thank you to all the people actually doing their part and putting a mask on. Thank you to those of you who are staying home and staying away from people.
Ask yourself every time you are out if your actions are killing someone. Because you likely have killed someone if you aren't wearing a mask and practicing safety.5 -
I canceled my PF membership because I can't work out with a mask on. I decided that I'll work out at home and in the future, decide if I want to get a new membership or not whenever all this is over. I'm also allergic to the hand sanitizer that people are smearing on everything. I could wear gloves, but that's almost as annoying as the mask.
If you don't want to cancel the membership, try getting one of the masks that has a vent thing built into it. If it's commercially made that way they won't count it the same as a hole.2 -
