  • Things I've learned on MFP:

1st Date: Go dutch and don't have sex.
    3rd Date: Coupons are acceptable.
3 months: You should be FaceBook Official or there's a problem.
1 year: Promise ring it baby....

Bahahaha. For for all the single people. Next time you go on a date, tell your date all of the things that you learned on MFP. And watch their expression.

Aw, I still have my promise ring. :P My husband got me one in high school after we had been dating a year. Worked overtime at his DQ job to buy it for me. :) Even though most of the time I do agree that it is silly, it meant a lot to me and was a total surprise when he gave it to me, cause we knew we were going to get married. We dated all through high school, and got married right after I graduated, (he graduated a year before me and joined the Army), and then a few weeks after we got married he was deployed for a year. :( But we've been married for going on 3 years now and we couldn't be happier!!! :D

It's COMPLETELY cute when you're young and an adorable keepsake. But when you're over the age of 30, a promise ring is absurd, in my humble opinoin.

And congrats on your sweet marriage story :)

Who ever let the "Parents raised you right" thing stop them from going waaaaaaaaaaaaay um, left, instead?

Promise rings...you have to be an "Old Soul" with believe in value of who you are and what you believe in. Meaning your parents raised you right..with respect for others and the lack of selfishness and selflessness within. The problem therein lies that the one you are giving it to...these days, does Not get raised with these same morals...in turn, allowing society to laugh and scoff and at real gesture becuase its so pure to believed in. Too much damage I've seen on this thread to a lot you....
    oh boy. Really?

I'm glad I'm not alone in this, I watch Nickelodeon and Disney channel on a regular basis. Which is kinda embarrassing when someone stops by unexpectedly... and knows I don't have children, lol!

I regularly forget to change the channel when my 2 yo is no longer watching pbs (he loves thomas, and the end is his bedtime). My husband will come home and I'm working in the kitchen or something to Dinosaur Train, the worst is when he catches me singing the theme songs.

My fiance gave me a promise ring when I was 17. He brought me into Kay to "just look around" and I was looking at some rings, and I saw one that was gold with diamonds around the side, that had two hearts side by side, one ruby and one pink sapphire. I mentioned it was pretty and before I knew it he was buying it. The same night, before I even had it (it had to be sized), he asked me to marry him. He said he knew it wasn't a "real" ring, but he didn't want to go out and just buy some old ring, he wanted to get me a really special ring. So of course, I said yes, hence why he is my fiance. I guess it became kind of a promise ring, haven't taken it off since I got it :) The ring he ended up picking out was actually one of his grandmother's diamond rings, which really meant a lot to me because he was so close with her and I never got to meet her. He's not giving it to me until I lose all the weight I want to lose though  he's so cute

::blink:: I hope this was your idea.

I had one from when I was 18-20 and really appreciated it ^^

A promise ring simply means that you are serious about each other. It's not meant to be a substitution for something else (I'm getting the impression, "engagement ring").

I don't care how old I get, I think a promise ring is sweet. It's always good to hold onto some of your innocence anyways, right?

He said he would if I wanted him to, but he thought it'd be good motivation (plus I'm cheap and don't want him spending all that money to have it sized and re-sized.) So kind of both, I guess.

You and several others here have a positive view of promise rings, and rightfully so, they were given in the right spirit of gift giving- out of love.

HAH. I just don't know where to start with that whole line of insanity. Good luck to you.

Luck? I gave one to my late wife. No luck is needed. If you believe that love is pure, then it is. I gave one to my late wife. She was an amazing woman and the second greatest expreience in my life. My kids are the greatest.
