Less Alcohol ~ JANUARY 2022 ~ One Day At A Time

I'm in! So far, been AF all 3 days in January. Really want to do completely dry January. I just have been drinking more and more over the past 2 years, and need to put the brakes on.9

Wow the commitment on this thread is awesome so far this month!
Because of so many of you I started the TAE today. @Mouse_Potato I also find if I approach it as a one day at a time, and sometimes even 1 hour at I time I am having better success. Before I would wake up each day after drinking promising myself that was the last night, tonight I am stopping. This lasted until my witching hours.
AF tonight, he is getting creepy LOL

Had a good day today, day 3 AF (which believe me, hasn't happened in longer time than I care to admit)!
I am so happy to see others are doing TAE!
Being able to share how we get along with it will be awesome.
I am in the one day at a time camp with you guys, and @lmlmrn sometimes one hour at a time for me too.
Tonight was easy because it was dog agility training night, my favourite night of the week.
I think boredom, sitting watching tv, has contributed to my drinking so I am working on being busy busy busy, and remembering what things I used to do on evenings in the years before I started drinking has been interesting.

He is getting creepy! 🤣
AF today, however slightly tempted. The socks stayed on again. 😎
What is TAE?7 -

I have started the 'Alcohol Experiment' on 'This Naked Mind' and I am feeling really inspired!
It has even kindled a tiny glimmer of hope inside me that maybe I could go dry for January, but I am realistic and don't have a high expectation that will happen. Just a cautious wish really, like a little secret desire that feels too grand for someone like me, with all the resolve of a wet tissue in the evenings.

Thank you! I am feeling really invested in TAE, I got the book from the library and following the daily videos online. It's one day at a time for me though right now, I'm not really feeling confident enough to get my hopes up for a dry January, but day three AF! Yay!8 -

That's my favourite thing about the Alcohol Experiment, it doesn't require you to be sober to benefit. It has totally different, but equally good benefits whether you drink during it or not.
I highly recommend reading This Naked Mind alongside the experiment if you are enjoying it. It's a great companion to the process and it's an easy read. I read it in the evenings as a relaxing alternative to drinking, because the one drinking rule with the experiment and the book are that you can still drink, just not while doing the experiment or reading the book. So since I was enjoying the book and couldn't drink while reading it, it helped me get through those first two weeks.
Thank you, yes I got the audio version of This Naked Mind, really like it so far!9 -

What is TAE?
The Alcohol Experiment - it is a free 30 program, I just started so I don't know that much about it yet, @MissMay linked it on the first page I think, that is where I saw it.8 -
January was a bit damp until today. AF!
I'm going to check out the Alcohol Experiment - I appreciate all the references to that, I'd never heard of it.
And now, when I feel like drinking, I'm just gonna look down at my socks and think about ya'll.9 -
My usual goal, 16-20 AF days per month.
My schedule pretty much dictates my AF days. It will be different until March, our local 3 arenas opened up!! There is senior/parent tot skating from 9-10am Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the biggest arena, the ice surface is sunken down, so quite warm for skating. The other 2 are the temperature of the outside.
I will be AF on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays for the next few months.
Diary style is how I keep track
Saturday January 1st - Grand Marnier in a heated snifter at 3pm with some cashews. So lovely and fragrant, warm going down and all the way to my knees and toes. It was minus 27C outside, so I puttered around inside the house all day. I had a couple more different drinks later. NYE I had a piccolo of Henkell Trocken (200 ml) and then an AF beer later on. I do have prosecco that is 375ml, but didn't feel like having that much quantity and the fizz would be gone if I tried to just have half.
Sunday January 2nd - AF - no regrets about having drinks over the holidays.
Monday January 3rd - AF - The weather really turned yesterday, perfect temperature today and snowing those big fluffy flakes all day. It took me awhile to clear off my car to drive to the arena, then I had just a little under 1/2 an hour to shovel before going to work at the restaurant. When I got home from work I shoveled for hours. I really felt like having a nice Benedictine or something of that nature. I took a gazillion photos today.
Rolling total: 2AF days out of 3 days.5 -
My very happy place.
Out my front door this morning 15 minutes after daylight began, it had been snowing all night:
Carving a path in my backyard so that I can take my Christmas decorations to my shed:
Not a very flattering selfie, but just love that there is ice in my hair
This is the snowbank that I created digging out a nice spot for my car.
The shovel lends perspective as to how high I was throwing it by the end:
Finished up on my porch with the heater and a hot chocolate instead of a liquer which was sort of the plan. That was like a gazillion squats getting under and throwing that snow so high up. Love love love shoveling, euphoric for me.

@Lilylady3k
Congratulations on your new granddaughter 🥳
@dawnbgethealthy
Lovely photos and a really good work out! Where about are you based. I’m in Wales UK and never see snow like that here!
Well done all, finding this such a supportive place starting my new relationship with alcohol.
Day 1-3 AF6 -
@dawnbgethealthy - WOW that is a lot of snow! Great workout and a deserved hot chocolate. Thank you for sharing the pictures.6

2 days AF done! I sense strong energy in this group this month....that motivation is running high.
Congrats to @Lilylady3k - what is your new grand daughter's name?
@dawnbgethealthy you are burning a bizzillion calories shoveling in the cold! That's a lot of snow....
I'm off to my youtube videos - half hour body pump + half hour of EPIC workouts. So hard!9 -
@Lilylady3k congratulations on the sweet new addition to your family! You must be over the moon!
@dawnbgethealthy I see all that nice fluffy snow and want to go skiing! You may be the first person I’ve met who actually enjoys shoveling snow. Good for you!
AF again last night. Had a late dinner after work, was craving a nice glass of wine with it, but then thought to myself “really? You’re wolfing it down in front of the TV in your Pajamas. A glass of wine is going to enhance this experience?” So I didn’t.
The good news is that my weight is dropping again. I re-started 21 Day Sugar Detox program that I had success with in October. I’m still craving alcohol because I went back to being a daily drinker during the holidays, but I know that will pass in a day or two. It’s pure vanity, I admit that freely! My clothes were getting snug and I looked kind of haggard.8 -
Hey all, this is my first time ever doing a dry January, or striving for any AF goal actually. It’s partially for calorie control, partially for the anti-inflammatory effects on my autoimmune issues, and partially because I got so inebriated on Christmas Eve that I vomited for five hours straight. Getting sick like that made me rethink aaaaall my life choices.
I have no problem being AF in my own home. I do think I’ll need some extra motivation when I do social things with my friends.
It’s easy to disguise club soda with a lime as a gin and tonic. I’ve done that at my boozy book club, and nobody questions what I’m drinking. That and micro-sips of my glass of wine to last the entire party. You got this!

SO MUCH SNOW! Love the photos and your enthusiasm, @dawnbgethealthy. Can't imagine the squats DOM you must be feeling. Good on ya! I've never heard of a heated snifter. That sounds lovely.
Huuuuge congrats to @Lilylady3k for the grandbaby. Very exciting.
Happy new year, all. My goal, broadly, has been to drink less and enjoy more. The way I have framed it, specifically, is still pretty challenging to me. 2 parts:
1) drinks on weekends- I think abstaining during the week has helped me enjoy more on weekends, like it is more of an occasion. It has become habit enough that it's not too challenging because I mostly don't even think about it. E.g. a vacuvin-ed bottle of wine on the kitchen counter left over from the weekend isn't bothersome. But come the weekend...
2) 2 drinks limit- I suck at this. I make the same old excuses to give myself "permission" go drink more-- I have calories for it, I'm not driving, kids aren't around... come on! These are terrible reasons to overconsume. After one drink I want another, but honestly, after 2 drinks I want another. And after 3 drinks sometimes too. Like the feeling at the end of the glass isn't variable. I'm playing with the idea of just trying a 1 drink limit for a while to see if I have more success -- and overall enjoyment-- with that. It can be a big or fancy drink, but just one. And no argument with myself after that. I don't know. Undecided.9 -
@Lilylady3k Congratulations to the new one in the family! I have one on the way at the end of February and I could not be more excited. I know this will be my last grand baby.
So I will have a total of 6 grandchildren by the end of February. My DD3 is not revealing the gender until birth. So good for her! The sad news all my babies and grand babies live across the country. We are planning a trip at the end of April to visit 2 daughters and 4 grand children.
I love that you all are having as much fun with SUPER SOCKMAN. defender of the bottle! as I am. I will see what this evening brings.9 -
-
Since we don't know what is under those socks, yet... I think it would be fun for all that want to join in the sock fun, to put one on one of their favorite bottles, post a picture and let us guess. Maybe we could do the big reveal Feb 1st?5
-
@dawnbgethealthy I love the snow pictures, I even like to shovel it is a great great workout. But I don't like driving in it hehe5
-
I am still laughing at the sock man on the whiskey bottle.....
If this is to become the mascot, we need a great name. After all he is the defender in my house of the bottle.
suggestions? or just continue to let him pop in when he/you need a bit of a reminder. Kinda reminds me of a mom figure giving me that 'look' just before you know you may or may not feel guilty.5 -
@dawnbgethealthy That is a lot of snow to get through... how are your muscles feeling today? Love your hair-do!
@Lilylady3k Congratulations on your new Granddaughter! (one of these days I hope to have a grandchild)
@EliseTK1 I am sort of the opposite, I tend to over indulge when at home, knowing that I won't have to drive anywhere. When out with my husband, I tend to go super light, so I can drive us both home if necessary... then have a couple when I get home. Keep checking in when possible, this group has been so motivating for me.7 -

Happy new year!
I am just the same as you describe - after one I want another. Recently I had a conversation with my doctor about alcohol and I was pretty unhappy to hear that the recommended amount for women is no more than ONE drink per day and one drink is defined as 5 oz of wine, 12 oz of beer, or 1.5 oz of spirits
When she told me I didn't completely believe her, so I looked it up on the CDC website and it was as she said. So I am at the point of feeling like what's the point? I don't enjoy just one glass of wine. I would rather have none if I can really only have that little, I know I wouldn't stop at one most times.
The whole reason I am cutting back is to stay healthy, I have no other reasons to stop. I have seen the horrors of what can suddenly happen if the liver can't handle the alcohol and it really scared me. Although I know it doesn't happen to everyone, it could be me, and then it would be too late. I did look at the amounts last year, but I didn't remember it being that restrictive.
Maybe the guidance has changed, or maybe I conveniently 'forgot'.
So anyway, I am loving this thread, the enthusiasm, the socks, the photos, the snow!
Today is day 4 AF for me, let's see if I can make it through witching hour tonight! Even if I don't, I am proud on the progress I have made so far, and I am still working through TAE and listening to audio of the book This Naked Mind.8 -

That is a great idea! the guessing game.....oooh random thought what if the 'sock' people do indulge a time or two. Does that mean they behave badly and start a strip sock tease???? but only giving peeks? hahaha. Would that leave to regrets in the morning, or a gleeful grin and being naughty?
Sometimes I think my mind gets a bit carried away HELP @MissMay I need you to rein me in!7 -
