Less Alcohol ~ JANUARY 2022 ~ One Day At A Time

@Fit_Happens_2021 Thank you for your words.
One of the reasons I'm here is that one grandparent was a heavy drinker ... dare I say alcoholic. She died from liver cirrhosis in her 70s. So good to get things under control now verse later. Not being a daily drinker is definitely an accomplishment in my books since I dropped in here on Dec 28 2019 and been back over and over for accountability.
@Turtlemummy - "I am remaining mindful, and my ultimate aim is to make wine something I choose to have, rather something I have to choose *not* to have." --- LOVE how you worded this and the thought process behind it. Great goal!

I am happy to report I am doing well being AF....so far 9/11 days. I am surprised it is not as hard as I expected. My longest streak is 14 days and I am on my way to break my record I set last year in April. It was also the month I had 24 AF days. I think I want to break my record LOL
I am beginning to wonder/worry if I have any liver damage after 25+ years of daily drinking? About 7 years ago I had a liver biopsy because of the dangers of a medication I was taking and it came back fine. But is it still that way? I don't have any symptoms that this may be a problem but I am a worry wart.
I did run into the 'socks' family. Of course baby sock had to photo bomb the picture

hahaha I love their hats! Brilliant
Liver disease, yes, that is my number one 'why'.
Alcohol doesn't ruin my life, I keep a steady weight with a healthy BMI, I don't get into arguments or act out when drunk, it isn't wrecking my relationships, I rarely feel depressed, my anxiety is caused by watching the news, but it isn't that bad that I would consider giving up wine for it, it doesn't stop me doing anything or being happy.
Nope, my only reason is health - when I saw that documentary about liver damage in people who thought they drank moderately it made me sit up and listen. I was shocked, then I found out about it causing cancer as well and was even more shocked that I didn't know it was a major carcinogen.

@lmlmrn Love Love Love your growing sock family!! You are quite creative. Thanks for the reminder and entertainment.6

Really enjoying reading your stories and accounts. Such positivity!
I’m 11 days AF and feel AMAZING 🤩
There really is now no denying in my mind what excess alcohol was doing to me.
I sleep well, have so much more motivation and energy and my anxiety has improved massively.
I listened carefully to your stories and advice, joined the AE and got a better understanding of how alcohol was affecting me and the science behind the cravings.
Most importantly I got from you all how important it is to be present and appreciate what I have now. I’m 39 with a great husband and 3 amazing young children and I don’t want to miss out on giving them everything I possibly can because of alcohol.
I’m still working out what my future relationship with alcohol will look like. I plan on having some wine for my husband’s birthday this weekend. I’ll make more definitive plans as I get closer.
Well done everyone and thank you all for sharing7 -

Here’s my hot take- we are being manipulated by news and social media to feel rage and fear. Rage and fear keeps our eyes on the media, and makes them, their advertisers and stockholders gobs of money. They more they keep us engaged by getting us hopped up with emotion, the more they win. Think about it. There are just as many feel-good stories out there that never get the attention they deserve, because good news doesn’t sell. Bad news does. Perhaps knowing we’re being manipulated will make it easier to just turn off the TV, get rid of the news apps on your phone, etc.
Whether you agree with me or not, if the habit of watching the news is setting you up for stress, and is affecting you and your DH’s, you may want to take a media break for a week or two and see how you feel.
As my dad once said when I told him I need to stay on a budget, “stay out of the stores.” Same idea!
You hit the nail on the head! I absolutely agree. I never used to be like this and I am going to take those news apps and social media apps off my phone, and stop tuning into the news every morning.
Day 9 AF
Atta girl! 😆4 -
@jonsek - You have a beautiful family!!! I had 3 kids too seems like many many moons ago. Now they are married and starting to have a family of their own. Thank you for sharing the picture.4

AF last night and tonight, but I’m sick! Ever hope for the flu? Haha! Amazing how things shift in the age of Covid.
A glass of wine more than I planned, a serving or two of crackers over the weekend, and my freaking weight was up again yesterday morning. Not as bad as it normally is after the weekend, so that’s progress. Clearly I need to tighten it up those days. Working on it!

@Fit_Happens_2021 Glad you are enjoying the 'Sock' family. It truly is keeping me away from temptation. Weird huh? But whats a girl to do when she falls for ......the "Sock"......in husky voice
@Lilylady3k yes the sock family is growing, I will have to find another 'nip' and who knows maybe some grandparents. You mentioned you had 3 children who are grown and are starting families. Funny so do I. All girls, and all soon to have 2 children each. LOL where did the time go and please don't take me back to diaper/toddler days
@jonsek You have a beautiful family, ....now is the goose part of the family too or just passing through?8 -

Crazy, right? I hope it’s neither the flu nor COVID but something more innocuous. DD#2 tested flu positive and COVID negative soon after arriving home. She immediately started tamiflu as soon as she got the result. Like she dashed out the door to get it. I started having symptoms the next day and I couldn’t find tests for flu or COVID anywhere. At her suggestion, I inquired via email with my doctor about prophylactic tamiflu, and he emailed me back immediately with a Rx for it. Just based on my daughters tests. Both of us had extremely mild symptoms with no fever.
ETA: I was saving our RATs for Xmas to protect the grandparents, but when DD#3 tested COVID positive Xmas eve, I used one and tested negative. We all tested again Xmas day before gathering outside without grandparents and I was negative again and felt fine by then. Hoping you feel better soon!7 -
ZTA Alumnae meeting ... Pizza & Wine in our PJs (mine were poodle pants & t-shirt). I drank water ... I was very very close to pouring myself a glass of wine but then put the cup back and asked if there was water. Grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge and indulged in 2 slices of not so good pizza. BUT I was under calories and AF for the evening.
My AF days are starting to catch up with my A days finally!!! 3 nights in a row AF.
January accountability: 5/11 days AF
Alcohol: 6 days (12 drinks)
Goal: Limit 1-2 glasses per day; 12-16 AF days per month. Aim to drink no more than 2 nights in a row.

I miss a day and see what happens...ok I was working way too long today (unexpected 12 plus hours -blame unexpected tech issues) and guess what - I did not check the news all day long! I tried to make that my daily goal and I did!
@jonsek your photo is lovely....you are blessed with the wonderfuls
@Xellercin - yep, I have discovered Al Jazeera and I do frequent their site from time to time. But less news is likely good news these days
Wishing you all a good week. For me, maybe worry less and adventure more is my thinking for the rest of this week.
Staying AF until the weekend....

Quick check in from what feels like the artic tundra these past 3 days.
(Negative) -14° 😨
Beautiful family pic of you and your children @jonsek more reasons to be mindful and wanting less.
@Lilylady3k I was so sorry to read your having anxieties with hearing of the passing of that person. I know how you are feeling. My Mother passed in her very early 60's. Both my Sister (9 years olders) and I had extreme anxiety when we were approaching the age our Mother died. It is normal. But it should not be a long heavy burden on your mind. You have a new Granddaughter now, yet that does not mean your ready to 'cash it in'. I'm sure you are in a lot healthier state than you relatives that passed from health issues. ❤ love your poodles( just like your family poodle pet)
AF last night
I'll catch up more later today

My usual goal, 16-20 AF days per month.
My schedule pretty much dictates my AF days.
I will be AF on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays for the next few months.
Diary style is how I keep track
Friday January 7th - Drinks, Mulled Cider with Spiced Rum. Planned drinks for Saturday also.
Saturday January 8th - Drinks, 2 in the afternoon and none after.
Sunday January 9th - AF - Had a nice glass of hot mulled cider after skating, no booze needed to make it delicious, the cloves and cinnamon had really mulled in it well.
Monday January 10th - AF - Working (and skating) out of town tomorrow with an evening shift at the restaurant so wanted to be AF. Heck, I am usually in my pjs in the evening, not at work.
Tuesday January 11 - 2 drinks, not planned. Classic: Cold, hungry, tired. I woke with a headache, and yet another schedule change. I went out of town, detours everywhere in the small snowy town of Kimberley BC. We went from minus 17 (celsius) on Monday morning, to plus 2 on Tuesday morning. Chalked it up to extreme weather change. Did my job, skated half-heartedly, came home exhausted. My tenant/roomate arrived home Sunday night very sick, he is a young healthy boy, hacking his lungs out and exhausted. Likely Covid since he had been with a bunch of guys in a hotel up in Golden BC for a couple of days who were progressively coughing. Working a split shift on Wednesday and am going to skip the morning skate and go to a skate in between my shifts. Very tired.
Rolling total: 7AF days out of 11 days.6 -
Oh, no @dawnbgethealthy. I hope your tenant keeps whatever is going around to himself! Please take care of yourself and get the rest you need to ward off any contagion. fingers crossed.7
-
So many germs around!
@Womona hope your feeling better soon.
@dawnbgethealthy hope you avoid it!
-14C is unimaginable for me here in the UK! I do really enjoy seeing everyone’s snow and weather posts - keep them coming!
I have just under 6 weeks until our holiday in the Dominican Republic.
Aiming to loose 6 pounds by then … avoiding alcohol is definitely helping me stay focused on the weight loss but seems to have stalled a bit now.
Aiming for another couple of days AF and then some wine over the weekend with my husband. My aim is no more than 3 glasses then back to alcohol free.

Jan 1-6 AF
Jan 7-9 Had wine
Jan 10- 12 AF - Enjoying chamomile tea and a cbd gummy tonight6 -
Day 13 and doing well. I do have issues falling asleep but have had that problem for a long time. Maybe I need to try the chamomile tea and gummies! Keep up the good work everyone!7

Try -36C, which was the temp here yesterday, and that's not even close to the coldest it gets here. At that point, the air hurts your face. Lol
I love it though. DH even went for a run outside.8 -
@MissMay - Thank you for your kind words! Uplifting as always.
@dawnbgethealthy - I surely hope that your tenant doesn't have covid or the flu or anything that is contagious. Sending Healthy Vibes your way!!! Oh and -14C is way way too cold for this little southerner. I get chilly just thinking about you in all that cold snow. Keep warm and cheery! Hope tomorrow is a wonderful day for you.
AF this evening. Attending the required training session for teaching English to adults through our church. The classes are free and open to everyone. The other teacher I was paired off with in 2019-2020 will not be coming back due to health reasons ... so I'll be searching for another partner.
DH is getting a bottle of wine for himself to drink while I'm out. Always feel guilty that he drinks when I'm out somewhere but then he does if I'm home too. So I need to shed that burden and just do what is right for me.

My goals are similar- AF during the week and 3 over the weekend. I get a do-over for last weekend when I lost my mojo after DD#2 goodbye dinner. This weekend we’ll have a goodbye dinner for DD#3 who goes back to school.
DH hosted an online wine tasting tonight for clients with the wine maker who is his friend in Sonoma. It’s more fun and interesting than it sounds, and often spouses participate off camera because you’re opening a couple bottles of wine (and they’re expensive at least by our standards). But I cooked dinner and ate it instead. He vacuvin-ed both bottles and I guess we will drink one Friday. AF so far this week.7 -

Wednesday Jan 12 - 2 drinks - this was my planned drinks day, not yesterday. I didn't even try to abstain. Have since drank some water and am about to have dinner after a split shift and a glorious skate in between. Planned AF tomorrow and Saturday, going to a matinee of a performance of 9-5 at one of our local theatres on Sunday, so don't want to be puffy : - ) Tenant upstairs is coughing up a storm. I was not feeling that great the last couple of days, but think that I sweated it out during my fabulous ice skate at a tiny arena here. I had the Red Hat Society at the restaurant today, I donned gloves immediately upon entry, and of course wore a mask.

Posting for accountability. Day 19 AF.
12/25 - 12/31 AF
1/1 - 1/12 AF
Spending the week watching 2 of my grandbabies. Loving my time with them, but definitely don't have the energy at 56 to do this everyday!

Day 12 AF. Sleep is better, not waking up in the middle of the night anymore.
I've been detaching from the news more, but been a little bored on evenings so I ordered some new water mixable oil paints and planning start painting again.
Keep up the good work all
