Woke up to -8 F and certainly did not want to go out. Headed to the gym eventually and did 3 miles on the treadmill. I invited a friend on my guest pass so she wouldn't have to run outside today either, so we had a nice chat catching up about my trip and her week. Then I went to a wicked HIIT class featuring burpees jumping up to a pull-up in one of the rounds. Plus weighted wall sits that I'm definitely going to feel later.
I'm trying to convince Stella she doesn't need a walk today because of the cold. But she will likely make a strong counter-argument which I will lose eventually.

I emailed to let them know so they can warn other people in Spain when they place orders, assuming it was just a new thing, and Tim replied almost instantly that he didn't know what happened but it shouldn't have and refunded me 6$!
This might be completely unrelated, but at some point last year here, the post office started collecting VAT tax on all packages coming in from outside of the EU. It's been around 20-something% of the declared value 😱
But anyway, best wishes on your race tomorrow!!!! I can't wait to hear about it!
Today I ran 16k, same as the starting long run for my plan I'm starting next week, and it was nice, with a few km in the [hilly] forest in the middle. Then the whole family went to the local pool where the Polar bear club had rented a jacuzzi and dry sauna for the day. We were signed up for a 1-hr slot so it wasn't too crowded, and it was really fun going between the warm stuff and the cold pool. And they had snacks and tea/coffee. I also did my first "reset" today, which is when you go completely under the cold water. I hadn't ever gotten my head under yet. 3 quick dips in a row, then a short break and once more under and out. It was exhilarating, but perhaps easier mentally as I knew there was a jacuzzi waiting for me.7 -
quilteryoyo wrote: »@marisap2010 ,@martaindale and @eleanorhawkins Good luck with your races and clothing. I would just dress warmly and not worry about getting hot...I so much prefer sweating to being cold. LOL
We have opposite preferences for sure! My goal is to dress juuuust enough to not freeze and cool enough not to get sweaty. I prefer to be cold over hot any day!
@polskagirl01 The polar bear club sounds so interesting! I can’t imagine dunking in that super cold water but I guess it would be easier to do it if you knew there was a jacuzzi on the other side of the dunk!3 -
Jan total: 54/80 miles
1/1: 11 miles
1/3: 5.1 miles
1/4: 6 miles
1/5: 3 miles

5k done! It turned out to be pretty perfect weather temps wise. I overdressed a little but it was on purpose and it was the right amount. It was windy and close to 50 F and I knew if I dressed too cool, I would end up running too fast to warm up. My hotel is about 3/4 mile from the start so I took a slow warm-up run there after coffee and a couple mini-muffins from the hotel breakfast. I didn’t need or want to wait around too long outside, so I timed it to get there, have a few minutes to find my corral, use the bathroom one last time and finish my warm-up.
I love running through downtown! The crowd for the 5k is a lot less than for the marathon/HM but there were still quite a few people along the course. Every now and then you would enter a section where the wind was really blowing! At one point I had the most glorious tailwind ever. It felt like I was being carried down the road. I ran a reasonable pace for a shakeout, 10:26, 10:10, and 9:37 for an average of 10:01. Legs felt good, no weird niggles, and I’m super excited for tomorrow!

My half marathon went well today! It was about 38F at the start, but I wore capris, a long sleeved wicking shirt, and my light Brooks jacket. I ended up taking the jacket off after about 3 miles because the sun decided to break through the clouds. The race went around the inside perimeter Robins Air Force Base, starting and ending at the Museum of Aviation. My goal was to finish faster than I did last year. I ended up finishing 1:40 faster, ending up with a half marathon PR. I was 4/11 for my age group.

Nothing like a PR for the first race of the year. Well done!!!0 -
@katharmonic I'm glad you were able to have a friend run with you and that post run workout sounds brutal.
@polskagirl01 Nice run and glad your entire family went to the pool. The sauna and jacuzzi sound like a great way to warm up after a dip in the pool. Congratulations on your first "reset!"
Great job on your 5K @martaindale ! You're going to do great tomorrow too!
Congratulations on your HM PR @marisap2010 ! Great age group finish too. You certainly don't look like you just ran a HM! I didn't realize you were running at Robins AF base. That's not too far from where my late husband's family lives.
I got busy today and ran out of time, so just walked a mile again. I did leave time so that I could do my back exercises too. I hope I can get a run in tomorrow.5 -
Great job @martaindale! Sounds like a good 5k and nice warmup for your HM tomorrow! Good luck!
Awesome PR @marisap2010. That's fantastic! Congrats0 -

Sunny, mid teens F, and just a light breeze from the southeast. Felt good and ran well. Hard to believe that it'll be snowing an inch an hour in just 12 hours....5 -
It is raining and very windy here this morning. We currently have a wind advisory for 40mph gusts. Therefore, I decided to do my easy post-half run going round and round my downstairs. I completed 2 miles, and my legs feel a lot better than they did when I woke up.

Hoping to do a long run tomorrow evening after work, as I've become used to running shorter distances and need to get back into running distance again.

Thanks! It was horrible, awesome, epic, I'm never doing it again until I sign up for another on a few days time lol. You all know how it goes.
Luckily all I cared about was finishing within the 4 and a half hours allowed, which I did, chip time was 4:09.32. I would have done it in 4:03.28, which is what it shows for the 3 women I was hanging out with at km19, but (sorry for tmi) I was at the point where my bladder would literally burst if I tried to hold it any longer so I had to go visit a bush. First time I've ever been able to pee on the trails, so a different kind of PR :-). Then I missed a turn and it took me a few minutes to notice I hadn't seen a marker for a while, so had to retrace my steps up the damn mountainside. Argh!
I took it easy, took photos and enjoyed the scenery, and I showed those antennas at the top who is boss (albeit slow boss) 😂 The only disappointing thing is there were no finisher medals because of covid restrictions. But I love the shirt and buff and I will definitely be showing them off!
Think I'll be hobbling for a few days.

37F raining 15 mph winds, sounds like a good football watching day. It might snow later which may change my mind.
@marisap2010 @martaindale and @eleanorhawkins great races!4 -

Nice run @Tramboman ! An inch an hour is a lot (of snow, not running LOL)! Stay safe.
@marisap2010 It's awesome that you did that many laps in your downstairs. You're a beast too.
@sweetdaisy13 You're definition of short distance is way different from mine. 10 miles would be a long run for me....right now, a very long run.
Awesome race @eleanorhawkins ! And congrats on that PR. You'll have to post some of your pictures for us. You did great! Looks like if they could give you a shirt and buff they could give you a medal. What did CoVID have to do with that?
It was a little slick here this morning, and I discovered a leak in my car's cooling system yesterday, so mom and I decided to not go to church today. I live streamed the service on Facebook and watched it while do a treadmill session. I walked a half mile each for warm up and cool down and ran 2.50 miles. I did a run/walk of 4/1 minutes at 4.5/3.8 mph. That gave me an average pace of 4.4 mph and my average HR was 138 during the run. So, I'm pretty happy with that, considering this is only my 4th run this month.

I see @martaindale finished her half on Strava! Way to go both the 5k and half, great job!
@eleanorhawkins Considering the more than 5k elevation change that isn’t all that slow! Great job!
@marisap2010 Congrats on your PR!
It’s cold here and although the roads are mostly clear, all the trees are dripping from the ice thawing, so I plan to lift heavy today and run tomorrow when hopefully it will be a tad warmer. Still waiting on test results, finding it hard to stay motivated!
BTW I think I figured out who is feeding the white raccoon. I was out back last night listening to the still before the storm and noticed a soft raccoon-like whistling from the other side of the fence. A little quiet spying revealed the neighbor’s daughter trying to lure raccoons. She’s about 10 and very shy, I know her mom and brother pretty well but she and I haven’t spoken, just waved.4 -

@quilteryoyo ikr? Ok, the shirt and buff came in a bag when we collected our bibs, so they didn't have to hand them to sweaty runners who may or may not have done as they were told and put their masks back on at the finish line. But other races have had them on a table and you grabbed your own. And there were stalls with volunteers giving out beer and sandwiches. Dumb but nvm, it is what it is.3

Yes, we had masks for the first 500 metres, going through aid stations and as soon as we reached the finish line. They're still obligatory outdoors here, at least in theory, apart from during individual sports.
The road HM I ran in November put the medals in the goodie bags with the bibs etc. The mountain race in September had them on a table. The one in October had children putting them on us. Each race is different.

Congratulations @martaindale @eleanorhawkins and @marisap2010! Impressive efforts all round.
Another couple of boring treadmill miles for me today. After my 5km run yesterday I had a 4.5m walk into central London in the afternoon, so I was a bit tired this morning. I took it pretty easy but still working on doubling the goal now and keeping the RED January streak going…

I did my best to wait out the cold for this weekend's long run. After yesterday's negative temps and single-digit high, it started climbing up slowly this morning. I took Stella out at 8 something and it was 3 degrees. My friend needed 18 miles in her marathon training plan today so I told her I'd join her for the last half if she started later. I met up with her at noon and it was close to 20 degrees by that time. It climbed to closer to 30 during our run. But the good part was it was sunny and there was very little wind so it did not feel that bad. And comparatively, we felt very lucky to be running in these conditions. I got to just over 10 and she got her 18 done.8 -
Awesome job on your race @eleanorhawkins!
Ran a virtual HM on the day of the Houston HM/Marathon. Started with a slow 10 minute first mile, but then sub 2 hour splits after that. It felt like I was going just comfortably hard, not really race pace. Was the fastest HM in a year. Getting my fitness back slowly.

HM race report:
Got up early to eat breakfast and get coffee before doing the short warm-up run down to the corrals. Timed it pretty well so I got into my corral about 10 mins before it closed and stayed toasty warm in my throw-away layers to wait for the start. It was mid 30’s with a feels like of 23 F and 10 mph winds, so cold for just standing around but not too bad once running. The start was right around sunrise, and we were off!
The first mile was pretty slow (10:36) between the tighter streets and giving people a chance to loosen up a bit without weaving too much. I love this course. There are spectators all along, and it winds through some fun parts of the city. I love that the people in the neighborhoods set up viewing areas. Just along the HM course there were also a couple of drum lines keeping up a good cadence rhythm. Just so much fun! After the first 5 miles or so, I was feeling like maybe I started too slow and started doing running math, which didn’t work at all and in general is a bad idea. I focused on settling into my pace and picking people off one at a time. When I got to mile 9 or so, I knew a PR was possible but tight so I focused on pushing just a little and holding steady. At 1 mile out, I turned it up. It was uncomfortable and hard but I knew I only had to hold it for a mile, one of the only miles with a hill. It’s not steep by any means but sustained, and all those hill country miles paid off. I was able to do a 8:34 mile 13! Then really kicked for the last few tenths for a finish of 2:08:02 and a new PR! I ran negative splits and also PR’ed my 5k, 10k, 15k, 10 mile, and 20k! Crazy! Strava didn’t give me credit for the 5k PR because I have some only fake time record hanging out from a few years ago that I will probably never reach, but Garmin let me know of my new 5k PR.
Overall, I am very proud of how I ran this race. I didn’t go out too fast, noticed when I was settling in a little too slow and adjusted, and really pushed at the end for some fast finishing miles (9:19, 9:13, 8:34 for my last 3). I also now know that there is definitely some additional room for improvement there, especially if I can get a solid pacing strategy together.
Bling in the spoiler. I ended up with 3 medals because I ran the 5k the day before and that is apparently a challenge type thing and it gets its own medal!
