@sandramarshall200 good for you getting a swim in!
I too really have to focus on including protein with every meal/most snacks otherwise my day end total is not where I want it to be.
Thanks Ann for the summary, no way would I get through that article, but the info is certainly important for us to consider. Reinforces & enhances our collective body of knowledge.
I am off on another vacation tomorrow, cruising to Hawaii from Vancouver BC, what a treat not to have to fly somewhere first! It's a repositioning cruise (coming off the Alaska run) . Then we will stay in Maui for a few extra days before flying home. 🌞
Changed my calorie goal to maintenance and am taking a bathroom scale with me + will log daily with guestimates. Plan to walk a lot. Just wish I wasn't starting out 7 lbs heavier than my last vacation, prior holiday gain never did fully come off, will really need to buckle down on my return mid-October. 😫
That's the plan! 🙂3 -
@BCLadybug888 Enjoy your trip!1

58 yo grandfather here looking to lose weight and get more fit so I can be there for my toddler granddaughters who we’re helping to raise. Always happy to make friends and so we can support each other.2

@OhioDido welcome to the thread!
@BCLadybug888 Have a great trip and give us a rundown on how you liked the cruise!1 -

@OhioDido welcome in! I have the same goals as you - I want to not only be here for my family, so I MUST lose weight and get more active, but I also want to be healthy enough to ENJOY being here for my family. I want to dance at my grandson's wedding (he's only 10 right now) - I want to see the birth of a great-grandbaby. I was not going to be able to do any of that on the road I was on. Feel free to add me as a friend - accountability buddies are great!
@BCLadybug888 I'm so jealous of the trip you're going on! I hope you have a great time! And I'm not sure if I should say Kudos to you for bringing your scale or say that you shouldn't worry about it you're on vacation. HOWEVER, if it were me, I not only be bringing my bathroom scale, I'd be bringing my food scale, resistance bands to take the place of my dumbbells, and downloaded workout routines I could do from my phone! LOL - so who am I to talk... KUDOS on bringing your scale!! You're rocking it! 🙌3 -
@AnnPT77 Thank you for slogging through that article and giving us the gist of it. Most of us already intuitively know that stuff (some cardio, some strength training, more protein), but for me, it's always good to have confirmation that I'm on the right track. Plus, information changes and it's good to know that what we thought was right, is still right. So again, thank you.
I got home yesterday after spending a few days away with my daughter. We did lots of walking (usually about 18,000 steps a day) and also did some kayaking on a couple of days. It was one of those holidays where I came home feeling good both mentally and physically. Sometimes I'll come home from a holiday and feel refreshed mentally, but wish I had done more physically. But this one checked both boxes. It's definitely a nice feeling.6 -
Checking in from somewhere in the Pacific Ocean...what a great cruise this is! End of Day 4, we are having 3x 25 hour days in a row to switch us over from Pacific time to Hawaii time - what a treat to have an extra hour sleep each night! We will lose the time again on our red eye flight back home, well worth it 👌
Temperature was cool the first 2 sea days but starting to warm up. We haven't used the pool area yet at all, but there are several hot tubs that look inviting. We arrive in Maui day 8, so still 3 more sea days to go. Loving it!
Of course tons of yummy food options available day & night, but managing reasonably well and have only had 1 glass of wine so far, so that helps 😀
Weight up 5 lbs but pretty sure that will be sodium as I have had at least a small calorie deficit everyday.5 -
@BCLadybug888 We love vacationing in Hawaii but have never done a cruise! I'm so interested in your experience. Do they have lots of activities to do while you're on your way to the islands?1

Hi everyone. I’ve been a member for a while but haven’t posted. I’ll soon be 65 and need to lose a little over 100 lbs. I’d like to do low carb because I hear it’s helpful with some medical issues but I always fail at it, it’s hard for me to give up carbs. I also have problems with caving in to my cravings. I get so frustrated with myself!!5

@Pdc654 - we are on a large ship, largest class of Royal Caribbean fleet, and there is SO much to do we are running out of time and making some hard choices lol.
This afternoon at 5pm went to a Thomas Kincaid art exhibit at gallery, then we listened to classical guitarist at the bar, watched the sunset then we ate, now we're at a family game show and then off to a night club for the sounds of the Caribbean with a 6 piece band.
Last evening the 8 piece orchestra did a jazz set at the night club, then we went to the music hall and played pool until the Aerosmith tribute band did a concert and then hit a few slot machines in the casino! I am enjoying all the musical offerings!
There are fitness classes, dance lessons, a large gym, craft classes, trivia games, puzzles, scavenger hunts, wine tastings, Bingo, art auctions, a Sportsplex with volleyball, basketball, pickle ball, roller skating & bumper cars. Special simulators to try surfing & skydiving. There is a special floating conservatory. There are multiple pools and hot tubs. All sorts of talks and demos and outdoor movies. Disco parties Karaoke. It's insane how much there is to do 😆!
Tomorrow we booked a Spa package for after brunch. Before brunch going to a lecture on black holes & volcanoes. Loving it!4 -

Welcome!!! Are you looking for advice? Or just venting your frustration with yourself? Either works, but will generate two different responses from people 🙂
I find that the more carbs I eat, the more carbs I crave. If that's a problem that you also have, maybe play around with how many carbs you eat till you find your "sweet spot" i.e. you're eating enough to feel satisfied, but not so many that you crave them all the time.
At the end of the day, weight-loss is about calories in calories out (CICO). If you burn more than your eat, you'll lose weight. If you eat more than you burn, you'll gain. Pretty simple. In fact, it's not complicated at all. We're playing the long game here so you have time to experiment with different ways of eating to find what works best for you and is sustainable over the long haul. Just always keep in mind: CICO.

Guess a little of both. I think emotional stress has a lot to do with it as well. I know I definitely need to move more. I’m not near as active as I should be.

I keep stopping by here every day and everyone must be busy as very few posts! Hugs to everyone in Puerto Rico, Cuba. Florida, the Carolinas, Eastern Canada, and Western Alaska. Seems such a small thing to have a successful day of keeping within my macros and calorie stats when I think of all the hardships you are dealing with. Keeping healthy to support family, friends and those in need. Hang in there.5

Happy Canadian Thanksgiving weekend to all of us in the great white north and hope you're enjoying time with friends and/or family. We truly have lots to be thankful for 🍂🦃♥️7

Greetings, all you seasoned citizens. Haven't posted here in a while. Life is still chaotic. My wife's cancer remains dormant, but she is not doing anything to improve her general physical condition. It's very frustrating, but watching her slowly deteriorate has made be very aware of the need to keep moving and active, regardless of your limitations.
I also have a sister who has some serious health problems. She is in intensive care right now while they try to sort out her issues. And I'm 3000 miles away and can't do anything except wait for news.
I have been diligently logging food and trying to eat well. I am down about 3.5 lbs. in the last 30 days with minimal exercise. Saw 199.3 on the scale this morning - haven't been in Onederland for awhile. Have started walking again the last few days as well. That is the one bright spot in my life, and I am going to keep it up.
Good to see all you keeping up your efforts to improve your health. The community here is a great source of inspiration.14 -
199.3 ! I’m jealous, got about 22 pounds to go before I get to that. Well done you.
I wonder what’s going on for your wife, does she feel hopeless? Or helpless? A cancer diagnosis is such an awful shock. I wonder if you could open that conversation with her? Maybe if you told her that whatever the future holds, you would like to face it together and make the most of everything? Sit down together and write a joint bucket list? It is really impressive that you are following your path despite her lack of enthusiasm. My husband is so supportive of the changes I am making and it makes a big difference.3 -
Hang in there Steve! You’ve got incredible strength and patience!2
-
@alteredsteve175 I'm sorry to hear about your sister. It must be frustrating to be so far away when someone you care about is going through a difficult time.
But look at you! You're doing everything you can to maintain YOUR health so that you can continue to be a light for your family. Your committment to that is inspiring 🙂3 -
Yes! Hang in there Steve!1

Hi, I am 63 and from Asker, right outside Oslo, Norway. Just discovered this today, so a lot to get used to. 😅8

Welcome Mere! Feel free to post your goals or struggles and we can try to help.
I am home (yesterday) from my cruise & extra days in Maui - but unfortunately my daughter and I both came down with Covid after getting off the ship. We still toured around Maui in our rental car as that was in isolation anyway and just didn't go in anywhere. My worst symptoms were an incredibly sore throat (like Strep) and my ears plugged up for a couple days. My daughter had the killer sore throat too - so painful to swallow!
Fortunately we had enough days between symptom onset and return date for the 5 day quarantine period, and were on the mend by then, that we were ok for flying home. Came home on a red eye flight and had a great sleep in my own bed so that's a plus too.
Still congested and headache but happily my weight is only up 2-3 lbs so hoping I can take that off easily. Cancelled our family dinner for this weekend, not sure when I will cook my turkey now! Glad to be home and thoroughly enjoyed the cruise. Aloha!5 -
I am 75 and new to Myfitnesspal. In the last six months I have been neglectful of watching what I eat and have gained weight. I could benefit by losing 23 pounds, but I'll be happy to just drop 13 for now. I am 5' 11" and weigh 223 lbs. I do get out an walk some, usually about five days a week for a pinch more than an hour. Besides this support group I have started writing down everything I eat, that way I can be more mindful. Greetings to BC Ladybug who unfortunately got Covid on an Hawaiin cruise. Also, my best thouhts go out to also to AlteredSteve; keep up the good work!3

Old Texas Airborne soldier here...doctors and wife have said I've gotta drop some pounds and log everything that goes in my mouth. Bad knees & feet will welcome any loss I achieve; overweight, diabetic, high BP, high triglycerides, ptsd but kicked cancer's butt 3 times so far but it killed my thyroid's functionality.8

Welcome mere, peeters and scoot. BC welcome home. Glad you enjoyed your trip. Sorry to hear you got Covid, but glad you’re feeling better.0
-
@BCLadybug888 Oh, so sorry you got Covid. That's the pits that you weren't able to really enjoy those last few days you had in Maui, but glad you enjoyed the cruise! Hope both you and your daughter recover quickly.1
