36 lbs in one week??

When you are 400 lbs or more, losing 36 lbs in one week is difficult but not out of the ordinary, especially if that is their first real week of VERY strenuous activity coupled with a VERY restricted diet.
It's when you get down closer to your goal weight that weight loss slows.
The people on Biggest Loser are typically morbidly obese. As such, week 1 numbers SHOULD be high for their weight loss.
I agree with this ^ ^. Those people have been doing absolutely nothing for a long time, and its a ton of water weight too. Also, somewhere I read that a "week" of taping on Biggest Loser, is actually more like 10 days (I know that's still crazy..but a few extra days adds up).0 -
You definitely can't believe what you see on tv, or any type of reality show.
Worked at a fly-in camp a few years back in Northern Ontario and a Canadian Fishing show came to film there. What you didn't see was half a dozen boats not on camera, with men fishing (guys who worked at camp) with rods supplied by the show. Whenever someone caught a decently big fish, they'd swap rods with the host....start filming and he'd begin talking to the camera, then ACT like he just got a bite, and reel it in. :indifferent:
Second exeperience.
You know those restaurant shows (diners, driveins, dives type) where the host just walks in, starts talkin to people about their meals, etc. All setup too. They close for a few days of fliming, and what you don't see behind the camera are the lights, crew, guys with a rough script, monitors, mics, etc. Half the restaurant is basically turned into a stuido. When we showed up for the shoot it was basically 'youre gonna be sitting here....and youll be eating this and that'. They cue the waitress comes to serve ya, they start fliming and act like its actually happening naturally.
Those are my 2 experiences with 'real' tv ^ . They do a lot to make it look real, and you'd never know otherwise.0 -
While I enjoy Biggest Loser, their weight loss is in a controled environment, excercising 5-8 hours a day and the first week is more like 10-12 days. Wait till next week, and see how the numbers change.
Biggest loser is not realistic normal weight loss.0 -
He was over 400lbs though and it was the first week. I lost 4 lbs my first week and my fiance lost 8lbs.
makes more sense knowing how much he started at.. and the fact that he said people training him to exercise and eat right.0 -
They are over 400lbs and are used to eating over 3000 calories and the only exercise is to walk to the car or refrigerator its not too far off to think that in their first week they probably restricted their calories to 2000 of very healthy foods (veggies, fruit, protien) and they exercise 6hrs a day and drink LOTS of water.
The history of this show most of the very heavy contestants all lose well into the 2-digits (20+lbs) and then week two the numbers are considerably lower b/c their bodies are adjusting to the new exercise regime and diet.
30+lbs does seem high, but there are many factors to consider and they are all monitored by doctors; not necessarily "unhealthy". More unhealthy to be over 400lbs!0 -
Well you have to keep in mind they are going from most likely sitting at home doing no exercise at all, and eating crappy. They come on the show and have crazy intense work outs and are eating a healthy diet that first weigh in is going to be huge. I was thinking the same thing last night though 36 lbs is pretty drastic.0
-
Thats amazing!! When certain people are at the weights they're at, I think its ok...The workouts they do are probably severely intense and they're on a very strict diet..I love that show!0
-
All I can say is the man could have been carrying around a ton of water weight!
I totally agree. It had to have been all water weight. He'll slow down in the next few episodes I'm sure.0 -
36 lb. is a small percentage of their weight, it would be like us losing 3 or 4 lb. in one week, which on the first week of a diet is possible, so i think this is okay and not "unhealthy". These people work out for HOURS each day as well, so keep that in mind too. I love the show and I think what they are doing is healthy, just not practical, but its great to see these people getting help :-)0

I don't know if believe or not, I do watch the show everyweek and I love it to me is a motivation to do what I have to do to loose the weight I have to loose. But 36lbs was a little odd!!! I made wounder if this show is real!!!! can't wait for next week and see how well or how poor he does!!!

i remember reading an interview with someone who had competed on the show years ago and they said alot of times, they will maniuplate the scales. such as, before their weigh-in, they will eat bananas & drink tons of water, then weigh-in. then the next week, they will starve themselves before the weigh-in so they will appear to lose alot. if there is a particular game being played, they can also either gain or not lose, so as to manipulate who is eliminated or "win" that particular game for the week. also, they don't weigh on the scale shown on t.v. they weigh off-stage and don't get to see their weight. the "scale" on the stage that we see isn't even a real scale. it's all for show, they just plug-in the actual weight from backstage and put it on the digital monitor above on the stage.0

Water weight? Maybe took a huge crap.. idk lol that's insane!0

This manipulation was true for the early US series'. That's why they changed it in future version around to world to be "You have immunity at the weigh in, so long as you dont gain weight".
As for the weigh in, i agree, its how they can set the drama just right and get people weighed in in the right order for maximum impact.0 -
I'm not a fan of that show. Something about unrealistic numbers week after week along with constant crying just bugs me...0

When I weighed 230 lb and started my weight loss journey the first week I lost 12 lbs. To me that is a lot on a 230lb woman.
Is 36 lbs a lot on a 400+ lb person? Not really when you consider that most of those people lived off meals consisting of pure junk. I'm sure it was nothing for most of those 400 lb folks to eat 1200 calories in one meal. Some probably even did that all 3 meals a day or more! Add to that no exercise and a more than sedentary lifestyle and then throw them in an environment where they are eating only healthy foods and exercising for hours a day... yes 36 lbs in one week (or even two) is completely doable.
Let me also say that I do not agree with everything BL does 100%. I do think a LOT of it is "for tv."0 -
sounds fake.
I agree. I heard an interview of a woman who was on an earlier season and she basically said that the whole thing is fake. They sign contracts basically agreeing to be tortured and that's exactly what happens. Seriously unhealthy practices, forcing people to workout with serious injuries, and a "week" can be any various amount of time in reality. I don't buy it for a minute.
Yep. I read that as well. What ticked me off about last night's episode is one of the ladies lost 6 lbs and Anna Kournikova, new "celebrity" trainer this year, basically berated the poor lady saying that's not good enough!! Heck I'd be estatic if I lost 6 lbs in 3 weeks....0 -

This. Also a lot of it could have been water weight. For a 400lb person...that's not that crazy for him to be carrying around that much in water.0 -

Would you?
If you'd been eating a very strict diet, exercising to breaking point 8 hours a day, every day, for 3 weeks, you'd be happy with 6lb lost?
I sure as hell wouldn't!0 -
I can't see any way that such a loss can be healthy. What I can so is that they are supervised by trained professionals so, for his sake, I hope it was water weight. Either way it goes, that is too much...too soon.0

If the lady lost 6 lbs in 1 week, I'd say that was pretty good. No I wouldn't want to work like they do for 3 weeks straight and see only 6 lbs but I don't so I'd be happy with 6 lbs in 3 wks with the schedule I'm on. My point was that her trainer was a complete asshat and statements like that give people completely false expectations.0 -
It's not really very safe, but it's all medically supervised. I wouldn't try that at home or expect those same results outside of the biggest loser gym.0
-
Most of it was probably water weight.0
-
Not sure if anyone said this... but if you google it - a lot of past contestants said that a "week" in the biggest loser house, or what we perceive is a week is actually more like 2-3 weeks.
At least that's what I've read. A lot of it is deceiving and don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of the show and it motivates me to wanna push myself super hard in the gym but it can really make you feel like crap if you're seeing these huge weight losses on people and thinking it's taking place in an actual week, when it's not.
edit: here's one link that a previous contestant revealed it's not always a week.

After seeing this post, I went back and watched that part of the show online, and the guy actually lost 37 pounds!0
-
Love that quote!! So TRUE!0
-
He weighed almost 500 lbs. And they exercise all day long on that program. Some I am sure was fluid, but he definitely burned more calories than he took in. They had to run or walk a mile for their first challenge. 500 lbs running. that had to be hard0
