Thanks so much to everyone who answered my post asking for help with LCHF. I googled LCHF, Atkins, and Keto and there were TONS of sites and info available. A lot of sites kept referring back to dietdoctor.com, so I just decided to settle in there. I'm going to start with the low carb info and recipes and then decide if I need to proceed to Keto. Keto seems very restrictive, but that's just coming from a rice, potatoes, and pasta perspective. LOL1

Yes diet doctor is a decent site. Keto is petty restrictive and I suggest you transition down slowly not to be totally discouraged. There are more than 1 type of ketogenic diet so it's important that you become familiar with them all to design one that might suit you better. Even 20% from carbs will work effectively, and if you feel going lower from a lack of progress, is warranted, then you could more easily, it's not a race. Cheers.2 -
@NewGrl64 My husband has type 2 diabetes and in order to not have to increase his medication, he opted to eat a lower carb diet. It's quite amazing the difference its made to his numbers. I knew it would, but to actually see the results is entirely different. He had been losing weight (and he's not a big guy to start with) so by controlling his blood sugar more effectively he's managed to put on some weight. Which in his case, is a good thing.
In other words, whether you choose lower carb, low carb, Atkins, or keto, just be aware that your total calories still has an effect on your weight. Low carb doesn't mean "free of calories".
Also, you haven't mentioned exercise at all. Exercise affects our blood sugars too. Our bodies were built to move so by adding in some exercise, you may see a difference in your numbers.
But most of all, congratulations for being proactive with your health ๐3 -

My name is Mary, 65 from Pennsylvania.
Did my Elliptical 120 minutes straight through this AM!!! 8.5 miles. Getting back up to my long sessions. Maybe I wasn't out of Cardiovascular endurance, as I thought. The previous sessions I wore a short sleeve shirt instead of a tank top as I did today again. (It's chilly in my basement.) Even though I had a fan on, maybe I just got to warm, which wore me down.2 -

Hi Mary - most important this time around (I feel) is to keep your exercise sustainable and enjoyable, and balance off your diet accordingly. So returning to exactly what you did before may not be the best course of action - while it was extremely successful for quite a while (major kudos to you) it was followed by a lengthy slide and significant weight gain.
Not at all trying to be too negative here, and hey - most of us have had these stops & starts in our journey (yoyo much lol ๐ ), I'm just trying to bounce some thoughts off you. But I am definitely cheering you on! ๐4 -

@BartBVanBockstaele thank you so much for your comments. I really get everything you said. You are definitely correct. Itโs definitely a mindset with me. I found the sugar free gum to be helpful.
The sugar addiction is real. Iโm making small changes to get that in control. Today was a good day. The tea is definitely sometime had done in past. Going to hop on the tea train too.
Hope you have a great weekend.2 -
@kmcintosh1988 While I am reading your message, I am chewing some chewing gum. I maintain a relatively large stock of it in my pantry because the last thing I need, is to run out. I do the same with coffee and tea: I don't want to run out, regardless of how much (or how little) I drink.
Once you have figured out a "system", you only have to apply it without giving it any conscious thought anymore. It is really worth doing.
Success, you can do it.1 -
@BartBVanBockstaele I need to stock up on the gum for sure. I think you are completely correct on this. I love teas so they are easy to drink. I just looked a few minutes ago and I actually had a couple flavors. Iโm going to make a lemon and honey one I found. Enjoy your evening. Letโs keep in contact. Hugs.1

And by the way, I like the lemon and honey too. I find that many herbal teas have hibiscus in them and those taste all virtually the same to me, the only big difference I find is the picture on the box. However, lemon and honey is an exception to that. Also, many/most "herbal teas, especially the fruity ones" have artificial flavours and even sweeteners in them. I have nothing against that, but I just don't see the point. I simply buy Crystal Light or MiO or something similar when I am in the market for artificial fruity flavouring.
A lovely evening to you. It is morning here in Toronto now.
If there is anything, just yell.2 -
@BartBVanBockstaele Wow thatโs great pricing on the gum! Itโs expensive anymore we buy mentos Pure Fresh you get 50 pieces for a little less that four dollars. Itโs less than five calories and total sugars are zero it comes in about five flavors but my go to it Spearmint.
Yes Iโm kind-of picky about teas. Iโm not big into fruity. I donโt know why Iโm just not.
I hope you have a great Sunday. Enjoy your day and keep on tracking. Hugs.1 -
I love (not that anyone was asking lol) all sorts of black teas, like Vanilla Earl Grey, double chai, Tetley bold, Lady Grey. There was one that had a funny name, 'Constant Comment' I believe that was an orange spice and made by Bigelow, but haven't seen it anywhere for a few years. If anyone knows who sells that in Canada, let me know.
I also love Jasmine Green tea, and for noncaffeine, a lemon zinger type or peppermint/chamomile (like skeepy time) is good.
There is a tangerine Crystal Light that reminds me of Tang in my youth that I will go for if don't want plain water and feel more like juice than tea...
Gum - love cinnamon dentyne fire!! I always have tgst on hand - goes well with Coke Zero...And the spearmint dentyne ice also pretty good (but not when drinking coke zero lol).
And if all else fails, one can always go to bed, right - who gets enough sleep anyway ๐ ๐ด

As for coffee, I am a sucker for Nescafรฉ Gold. I use very little, a teaspoon (5 ml) for 310 ml of water. That is barely more than colored water. I use a pod-style coffee machine, but I only use it because it provides hot water on demand, which means I have no filters to store, use and throw away. I don't even have to stir, the machine does that simply by filling the cup. If I want tea, I put a tea bag in. The only exception would be my Japanese green tea. That is a little more involved. That explains why I don't drink it all that often even though it is my absolute favourite. I just don't think it is worth the extra time.
I used to be big fan of Diet Pepsi. That has a taste to reminds me of Coke (!) lollipops I had when I was a child. Diet Coke doesn't have that for some reason. I was an even bigger fan of Diet Tonic and plain sparkling water. But that seems to have lapsed. I couldn't buy it fast enough in the past, whereas I still have ten cans or so of sparkling water in my fridge and I don't touch them. Tastes/cravings change, clearly.
I anticipate my weight loss journey to morph into weight maintenance some time soon, maybe three/four months or so, but it won't change much. I'll just change my diet to titrate my way up a few calories and everything else will stay the same.
Lovely day to you and keep going!1 -

@Elwin5 Thanks for your help!
I've made up a lunch/dinner menu from dietdoctor.com (I don't eat bfast, never have, never will, so I've already got the intermittent 16/8 thing going naturally). I chose a 30g net carb limit and managed to get into ketosis pretty quickly (measuring with ketostix). I was a little surprised by how quickly, but maybe it was because I'd already given up most processed foods. I thought I'd have trouble because the carbs weren't low enough, but I seem to be doing okay.
I basically eat chicken and fish and a lot of green veggies, cruciferous veggies, and other low-carb veggies, both raw in salads and cooked. I add butter and olive oil freely to get my calories up. I also love avocados and olives and add them a lot.
So far, so good. I don't feel deprived at all. I did have a very mild "keto flu" around day 4 and 5 - headache, a bit of nausea, really tired - but it passed quickly enough.
I've lost 3 lbs. this past week, but I realize it's going to be all water weight. I've upped my water consumption by about 1/2 so I don't get dehydrated. I feel good so far, but we'll see what happens at the beginning of March when I go back to the doctor for blood tests.3 -
After almost 3 years of avoiding it this morning I tested positive for covid. Symptoms include sore, scratchy throat, bad sinus congestion, headache, chills, and just a little bit ago a temp of 102.6. I'm fully vaccinated and boosted, but my doctor prescribed paxlovid for me anyway because of underlying conditions of COPD, asthma, and high blood pressure. And age, Lol. I don't feel too horrible. It has not dropped into my lungs so hoping it stays above the neck. My talk at the Y was supposed to be tomorrow but now will be rescheduled for February.

@Pdc654- wow, that sucks!
I (vaccinated & boosted) got Covid in October and a killer sore throat was my main complaint. And then lack of energy persisted for several weeks. ๐ด napping was my new normal for a while.
I think we'll all get it eventually, and maybe more than once, if it has indeed become endemic. But hopefully the strains keep getting weaker and our collective immunity keeps getting stronger! ๐ช
@NewGrl64 - nice you were able to get into ketosis ๐; please do let us know what your numbers do in February - enquiring minds want to know ๐ ๐4 -
Hey all - if you plan to stick to it for the long haul and you're looking for a group of supportive people (and usually a special weekly challenge), consider joining the group known as "Lose 1 Pound a Week and Keep it Off! 2023" Search in groups & click link or try the URL below, then find the little "join" button. This is your personal invite! Someone should approve your request in a day or so; usually less.
The only requirements are to post a starting weight and set some quarterly goals - then to stay active, all you have to do is post your weekly weigh-in.
If you'll be gone for a while, let the group leaders know; they'll put you on "shore leave" so you won't become inactive (if you are inactive, just weigh in to become active again).
All the other ongoing challenges are purely voluntary and are there to help us stay accountable. Only do the ones you want to do, and stop/start at any time. The group has been going since 2016. It's quite friendly and has an active group chat thread. I joined last year at Alteredsteve175's invite, and I'm so glad I did ๐

@BCLadybug888 Yes it sucks. Just hope it stays fairly mild and doesn't move into my lungs. Still running a pretty high temp even though I've been taking ibuprofen. I think that's what is causing me to feel light headed when I get up and move around. Also maybe a little dehydrated. I went 7 hours without needing to use the bathroom. Usually I have to go every couple of hours. I need to remember to drink more.5

Hello all, been reading comments for a few days to get a feel of the group. Very supportive group and information!
I turned 60 last month, mother of 5 grown men and soon to be empty nester. Actually looking forward being responsible for just taking care of the hubs and myself and finding my place in the next chapter of life. looking for the girl (you know, that girl that was ready to take on the world pre Mom๐). My goal is to get my health and wellbeing to a place that makes me proud of who reflects back every morning when look in the mirror. Looking forward to participating and receiving help and support from this group. Wishing you all a successful journey!8 -
@Elwin5 Welcome to the group and welcome to this exciting new chapter in your life!
I love to read and here are two books that really motivated me take hold of my own health: "What Makes Olga Run" is about athletes who compete at the World Masters Games into their 90's. And the second book is "Thinner This Year" which is a sensible fitness and nutrition book written by Chris Crowley. It's geared towards people in our age bracket (Chris calls it our third act). He is still downhill skiing in his 80's so he must be doing something right! Both books are probably available to download from your library, but I ended up buying Thinner This Year because I wanted to be able to refer back to it (which I often do).
Here's to having a spectacular third act! ๐5 -
Iโm 76 and new to this program. I live across the road from a great Wellness Center and l love working out there. My biggest complication now is managing the technology of the app.5

Down 14 lbs since 1/1/23. Finally back in Onderland Again! Elliptical Interval setting 150 minutes for 9.7 miles. Getting my motivation back.

Welcome to all the New people to "Our Seasoned Citizens" group as @alteredsteve175 always says!3

Weekend check in. Holding the line weight wise, but haven't broken through to Onederland. Yet. ๐
No change in Kathy's condition. Some good days and some bad days. Pain seems to be less, but her mobility continues to diminish. That's a problem. We live in an older house, and it is not suited for a wheelchair. I'm hoping we don't end up in that situation.
Got 12 miles walking over the last week. That helps relieve some of the stress.
Dealing with depression that comes and goes. Seeing the therapist once a month and going to a support group every two weeks. Somehow I have maintained some sanity through all this.
And this little community is a blessing as well. Thank you all for your positivity and support.14
