Great run @Tramboman , especially in those conditions. The wind chills me to the bone.
Nice running @Mari33a !
I didn't have to go to work today, so did some paperwork and made some phone calls this morning, waiting for it to warm up outside. I did go out and ran driveway laps at about 2 pm when it was 57F (13.9C), clear, slight breeze. It felt colder than that today, so I wore long leggings and long sleeved shirt.
Today's plan called for speed play of 20 sec fast intervals with 30 - 45 min low intensity. I didn't keep track of the fast run, but just ran the flat part of each lap faster. I thought I had gone 6 laps, but, alas, it was only 5. That's okay. Anyway, I ran/walked 2.25 miles in 30:20 min for an avg pace of 13:29 min/mile. My avg HR was 141 and max 157 bpm. I also walked a mile total for warm up and cool down.

@martaindale - we saw Chicago on Broadway when our daughter was in HS. We all loved it and it is still one of my favorites. I imagine Legally Blonde would be really fun as a stage production. For me though I just love musicals. There was a period of time we were in NYC frequently and tried to see at least one show every time (Music Man, Oklahoma, Rent (3 times), 42nd Street, Moving On, Evita and more I can't remember).
@quilteryoyo - that quilt top is gorgeous. I tried quilting once and enjoyed making small items but committing to a large quilt was just overwhelming. Do you hand quilt the top to the back or do it on your machine?
I also sew, starting from a very young age and at one time made a lot of my own clothes as well as making displays for the sewing dept in a large department store where I worked in college. It was great because I got to pick out patterns and fabrics I liked, make the items and they paid for it (time and materials) and when it came off display it was mine.
@tarun_yadavA - is the scenery that you will loop around interesting? Also is your running buddy who coerced you into running a marathon in training, running as well? I am really excited for your race, too! Living vicariously I guess 😁 I looked at the website for the race and did not see anything for runner tracking but maybe there will be something up on race day.
@7lenny7 used to run marathons and ultras that were multiple loops like that, but out on a trail or in a big field. He seemed to really like doing it.
Also @eleanorhawkins, I think @7lenny7 used to eat pizza when he ran some of those races. I don't think he ever took it himself though, it was just part of what they offered at the fuel stations.
I haven't run to walked since last Thursday. Because of some health/medical issues I won't be running much, if any this month but may get in some walks depending on how I feel. I was told to take it easy. I do plan to still be following along here though and watching from afar all of your great running exploits!6 -
Thanks @shanaber . I do hand quilt the back to the front. It's a production just getting ready to start so I keep putting it off. I just need to commit to getting it done. When I stopped, I was about half way done with the quilting. It's been so long now, it'll take me a bit to figure it out again and then I may have to get some help getting the binding on when I'm done. I'd hate to mess it up at this point. That college job sounds really cool - sewing and getting to keep the products when they came down. I'm so sorry that you aren't going to be able to run this month, but glad to hear that you are still going to follow along here. We would miss you. Hugs.1

Starting slow this month. While I work on my conditioning, I've been doing heart-rate training. I'm finally figuring out what pace keeps me in the zone, but I sometimes find myself speeding up because I feel I'm going so slow, and then I get out of the zone and have to walk to drop it down again. Will try adding intervals once I get my distance up a bit more.5 -
Got 8 miles this evening outside. Supposed to rain the next few days so wanted to get this one in. Didn't intend for this to be a speed day, but when mile 1 clocked in at sub 9 pace I just went with it 😉

February Goal: 90 Miles
2/3: 5.27 miles
2/4: 5.26 miles
2/5: 13.15 miles
2/6: 5.02 miles
28.7/90 miles completed for February
We are supposed to get rain the next couple of days, and the weather was really good for running this morning, so I ran 5 miles. It was a great run. I was able to wear shorts and a t-shirt. It was 54°F, but a little windy so I started out with sleeves on, but I took them off about halfway through. I saw a skunk when I started out. And I saw a loose dog near the park. The dog ran off when he saw me though so he wasn't a problem. I was worried that my legs would be really tired after my 13 miles yesterday, but I felt pretty good. I do plan to take tomorrow as a rest day even if we don't get the rain.

No mileage to add today, unfortunately (although I think the only time I sat down today was during lunch - the kids kept me busy walking around the classroom answering their questions). Could have done a little bit after work, but I decided not to, since I managed to slam my foot under the freezer door yesterday evening. The swelling is slowly going down, but I thought that I'd better take it easy today. Hoping to be back to walking after work tomorrow.5

Morning all.
Today's 7K in the cold fog
Did do a weather check... Somewhere in between cold and mild.
@eleanorhawkins - pizza for fuel? What the...
🤣😂
(Here's me - one month ago, running long distances on an empty stomach!)
Makes me nauseous just thinking about it! Like that episode of the US Office where Michael Scott signs up the whole office for a 5K fun run and eats Pasta Alfredo to 'carb up' just as the race starts, then vomms it all out and collapses 🤢
@shanaber - it's the old F1 motor racing circuit. (I'm not into racing cars at all, so lost on me). If old pitstops and F1 legend statues etc your jam - then yes, I guess!?
@Laurz9191 - 11 laps as interesting!? Lol, no. Dull and monotonous, more like! Haven't done a single scenic run in London in over a month (I have Canary Wharf to one side of me / Tower Bridge and The Shard to the other). Just been doing laps - to "get in the zone"!
@quilteryoyo - staggered start times, but yes, lapping (and getting lapped) remains a distinct possibility/likelihood.
PS: lovely quilt.
@martaindale - thanks!!
PS: I think I've done two musicals. Dirty Dancing and The Lion King. (First one was traumatic; enjoyed the latter more!)
T-5.6 -
Looks like perfect weather. Nice speedy run. Supposed to rain the next few days here but not this morning! Yesterday at lunch I tripped over something and altho I did not fall I banged my instep arch on my other shoe and twisted my knee a little. I am going to start ranking my injuries on a scale I think of 1-10 where 10 is NEED CRUTCHES and DRUGS and HOSPITAL and 1 is WHERE DID THAT BRUISE come from? I rank these at about a 3 and expect to do my @AlphaHowls imitation and ignore them to run today. I did skip tennis yesterday evening and my walk but decided that maybe icing is not always best as our body might NEED the extra blood flow for recovery.
Im a bit behind on posting but I think I will still make my 100 miles for Feb (I think that's my goal) Altho this past ice storm was not as bad as '21 I was still without power from Wed mid afternoon to Sat late. I have ordered a generator and some other things to help mitigate because I realized Austin has just gotten TOO big for the response to individuals to be as quick as it used to be. On the other hand, my insurance USAA is sending me a check for the contents of my refrigerator which were ruined no questions asked.

@tarun_yadavA yes but think looooong trail run mentality. You're going slow, in fact some climbs you're going slower than a wander round the shops, and you've been going for hours. Pizza sounds like heaven in those circumstances hahaha.
I've always thought races on F1 and other motor racing tracks sound cool. We used to be quite into F1 before. Races at airports also catch my attention. Never done any of either. Closest was a 5k at the huge marina in the cith where the cruise ships dock. That was great fun, it was at sunset and organised but the National Police force, and they 'chased' us with a helicopter with a spotlight. That makes you run faster!
@quilteryoyo that quilt is stunning! I used to do a lot of cross stitch in the days before I spent most of my free time running around.4 -

@SummerSkier ouch 😣 hope knee is okay0 -

Think all this pizza 🍕 talk... Think my post Marathon evening dinner might well be pizza! ☺️
I haven't had a single drop of alcohol or eaten meat since NYE 😐
(Only vice has been sweet tooth - so do eat a bit of chocolate after dinner before bed!)
As for the F1 track... Provided I'm not too zombied out/tense, and I remember (!), I'll take pictures!5 -
@ScienceofTeaching I'm originally from Western PA, and learned to hand quilt there, although I live far from there now. Welcome!
@Quilteryoyo Nice log cabin! I set up my quilt frame in my room so I could feel useful while unable to run. I'm currently working on someone's grandma's UFO (UnFinished Object) that was in a box of fabric someone gave me. It's not my favorite design, but I'm sure I'll like it more when it's done, and will probably sell or gift it.
@tarun_yadavA I just now caught that the marathon is a 11x looped course 😱. So a big WELCOME to you as well - you've officially joined the "crazy" subset of this group. That's a good thing, I think.eleanorhawkins wrote: »I'm reading a trail running 'manual' atm by a woman who considers it perfectly acceptable to take a pizza on a run for fuel. She recommends folding it in half to stop the toppings falling off and then cutting it into bite-sized pieces!
Health update on meI was starting to see improvement, then overdid it and relapsed, and am now trying to dig back out. Added some new treatment at the clinic and they put me on a diet that basically eliminates everything good. So no pizza for at least 4 different reasons (flour, yeast, dairy and meat, and there's probably sugar in the sauce, so make that 5 reasons). Bleh. There may be a sliver of hope on the way from a researcher in Belgium who is wrapping up a study using light therapy for long covid patients, and is expanding to letting others try it in other locations. I'll get a light to try, and he'll get more data. It's very interesting stuff.
The air quality is so bad that the national weather service sent an alert to refrain from outdoor activity, which I received as I was going out the door to head to the lake. The air really was stinky, so I wore a buff folded over as a mask while I hacked away at the ice.Yes, you can see (and taste) the air.8 -

Hmm, I like this, going to think about this scale a bit.
WIP10 - Ambulance, hospital, Urgent care....pine box
9 - Is that a bone sticking out? Can I tell what color I was wearing before the blood?
8 - Do I know who I am, or what the hello I was doing?
7 - Searing and Sharp pain, swimmy headed, why are people looking at me weird?
6 - Sharp pain? Can I walk it out?
5 - "It's just a flesh wound!" "You can make it"
4 - I can get up on my own, but holy hot sauce I am going to feel that later!
3 - Well, crap, I tore my tan (scrape)
2 - Clothes not torn, just a scratch, scrape
1 - where did that bruise come from?
HAHAHAH! I just thought we need a decision tree!

A decision tree... hmmm these are pretty decent. In light of those ratings I think mine was a 4 yesterday.. LOL10 - Ambulance, hospital, Urgent care....pine box

@polskagirl01 well crapola on the fatique returning. I hope the light therapy ends up to help! Makes me so sad to see you struggling and just feels like you got an unfair shake out of this. That air is horrific. I would be wearing a respirator I think if I had to go out in it. Stay safe!
Snuck a 4 miler in. I thought the injury to the instep/arch would be more significant based on the puffiness yesterday afternoon but as usually y achilles heal - the knee aches more and the arch is fine. Anyway, 24 hrs in now so I feel like I got a reprieve ... I hate having to wait 24 hrs to see how bad things are anymore...
HAHAHAH! I just thought we need a decision tree!4 -
@SummerSkier thanks. Other than the 30 minutes outside at the lake, I stayed inside with my air purifiers. And I actually have a mask designed for smog with a little built in draw fan and filter. You plug it in to recharge like a phone. I didn't use it today though.2
-
@SummerSkier I think you've composed an excellent decision tree.
I'm originally from Erie, PA, so it's nice to be with some western PA peeps ..5 -
Random thoughts, comments and news:
I must copy the decision tree!
@SummerSkier glad it isn't too bad!
@polskagirl01 ugh, I was worried you would relapse at the time. Fingers crossed the light is of some use, and ****&/€!!! diet. The book is by Claire Maxted, former editor of UK Trail Running magazine. She has a YouTube channel Wild Ginger Running. I find her rather annoying, but she does have some good advice and in my book anyone who believes in pizza can't be too bad!
Talking of pizza, @tarun_yadavA there is no valid post-marathon meal that does not involve pizza. That would be a sin. End of story.
Life suddenly got crazy for me, my daughter is suffering from crippling anxiety to such an extent that she almost cannot leave the house without ending up in a heap on the floor. She's getting help but it's very early days, and it's so very draining. She's adamant she can't take the pressure of school (final exams are in June) and wants to quit. Now, to top it off, she has a flu bug. I had talked her into coming with us at the weekend and staying in the hotel room with her dad while I race, and maybe going to a pizza buffet place on the way home. So who knows what will happen, whether she'll be up to that, or I'll go alone, or I won't be able to go. I'm downing shots of echinacea and propolis hoping to dodge the germs, anyway.
Also, I found a map and profile of the race online. This will definitely be a training run with aid stations, and it will definitely be character building! 13 climbs, including a mile and a half long one at 14% near the beginning, 4 or 5 at 11-12% along the way, and a nice (sarcasm there) mile and a bit at 15% almost at the end!

@SummerSkier @ScienceofTeaching Too many injuries here as of late! Hope y’all are on the mend.
@tarun_yadavA I agree with @eleanorhawkins that pizza is the ultimate post race food! I also have it frequently after my long runs. I find that about about 10-12 miles, I really crave pizza afterwards.
@eleanorhawkins You find races with the craziest elevation! Character building sounds like a good way to describe that one. Sorry to hear your daughter’s anxiety is so bad right now. Mental health challenges are so hard, especially with our kids. Mine has had some rough months this last year (though currently is not in a terrible place) and my husband and I have really struggled with how best to help them. It’s so hard. Hugs to you!3 -
February total: 22.4/125 miles
2/1: 3.1 miles
2/3: 5.2 miles
2/4: 9 miles
2/6: 5.1 miles
I went to my first Pilates class Sunday and I am still sore! Yesterday was easy miles, and I am so grateful for that. My glutes were so sore there is no way I could have mustered speed. I’m supposed to go do some speed work (400m repeats) today, but mentally I’m having a hard time getting out the door. I didn’t get a great night’s sleep and teenager woes have me stressed out.
Teenager woes…My kid was brought home by the cops at 2am this morning. They left the house a bit before midnight and were walking around the neighborhood, in the general direction of a friend’s house. So, we think they might have arranged with this friend to meet up. The constable saw them and brought them home. So today my husband I spent a bit of time figuring out how many times they have snuck out (looks like once before) and what we can lock down to make it harder to get away with. We have a basic level smart home system. Locks, alarm, cameras, various sensors all controlled by an app. They have control of quite a bit using their own code so they could come in and out as needed and not need keys. So we are working through all the permissions and figuring out how to make it so that they can’t disarm the alarm at night but still be able to unlock doors, etc. Our bedroom is at the back of the house so even though the system tells you when a door is opened, it’s too far away for us to hear it during the night. They obviously figured that out. I think we got it sorted out but it’s just so annoying that I can’t just trust them to freaking GO TO BED!!5
