Just read the link you posted. Thank you! It is certainly worth a read. I try to take a walk outside daily with my dog. He certainly enjoys it. Nice that the snow is finally going and I can get out more.4 -
@ridiculous59 I too just now read your link about walking. (My churches previous pastor did that same walk once, The Camino Way, across Spain with his nephew. He enjoyed it immensely). Thank you for posting it. It was insightful.2

@ridiculous59 I love the picture of you with your dogs! Just gorgeous. You, the dogs, and the scenery!2

I have been at this a month now, and for the past two weeks have been in birthday mode with way too many restaurant outings, but other than the one day where I ate out twice and my numbers were a nightmare, I'm happy to report that I have lost 16 pounds this month. I've still got birthday outings through April, but I am suggesting restaurants where I can find nutritional information and adjust the rest of the food I eat that day so that I don't regret anything. I've even had cake! It is really time consuming to balance my food each day so that I eat within my calories, carbs, fats, sodium, etc. but well worth it. I have a whole new wardrobe of clothes I can wear now that I haven't worn since before Covid so I feel as though I'm headed in the right direction. I went to get blood work done this past week and am hopeful that even losing a little weight and getting my food under control has helped my numbers. I wanted to thank you all again for the advice you gave me that helped me so much, and is continuing to help me, through this journey. I think next year I'm going to have a party so I can get all the celebrating done in one day!4

Thank you @marci320. And congrats on your accomplishments also. 16 pounds your first month is awesome. I remember that feeling of going down through the sizes in my wardrobe. It's fantastic! As soon as I got down to one Jeans size, I'd start trying on the next size down every couple of weeks until it fit, then do the same for the next size. It's great motivation.

I need to get my head right and be more accountable to myself in this. I need to get back in control and off the carbs again. Back to my lower level of daily carbs(15g net +/- 3) and FOCUSED on what is best for me! And NOT SHORT TERM ENJOYMENT! Elliptical HIIT setting 150 minutes for 10.11 miles today (I do my elliptical like this 3x per week, on my off work days, pretty religiously. Thursday, Friday & Sunday this week).4

How is everyone doing? It's been over 10 days since a post! Hope everyone is safe, doing well, and looking forward to spring. (Or fall in the southern hemisphere) Still getting snow where I live, but the glacier in my driveway is finally receding, yay. Watching for little green shoots of spring flowers to start peeking out of the ground, but the only thing I see so far is my rhubarb. The brown bears here are becoming active again which kind of puts a hold on outdoor activities for me. I miss my dog, he was so good at warning me when they are nearby. I haven't been very good to myself lately and enjoyed more than I need in the snack department. Goal today is to refocus and consistently log my meals, which surprise, works if I keep it up!7

Hi everyone! Yes, it has been awhile since anyone has posted. I had bronchitis 3 weeks ago and ended up on prednisone. While that stuff works a miracle to open up my lungs and clear the inflammation, it does have its side effects. I had a very hard time sleeping at night since I had to take it twice a day. Also, during the 5 days I took it, I gained 4 pounds. When I weighed again a week later I was 0.2 lb less than before I started taking it. So all water weight!
It really has been a bad year for illness for me. Since mid-Jan I've had covid, then rebound covid, then bronchitis. About the time I start getting back into my lifting routine, I would get sick for a couple weeks and have to start again. My asthma and COPD complicates things, and recovery takes a little longer for me.
Saturday we leave for Las Vegas. We'll be there a week. Last time we were there was in 2013. Things have changed a lot, especially the cost of things. Of course, everything is so much more expensive now. I know I will be eating at or maybe even above maintenance while we are there, but I'm prepared to lose it when I get back.
I'm pretty close to maintenance at this point, anyway. I would like to lose 2 or 3 more pounds but I really am already at the top of my maintenance range. I think a good weight for me will end up being 125 lbs plus or minus 3 lbs. I was 127.8 this morning which is within that range. I am now almost into a size 6 jeans. I can zip and button them, but they are still a little tight. I am carrying some extra fat around my waist, and if I could lose another inch those jeans would fit me a lot more comfortably. Hoping the strength training will help me get there.
I am so looking forward to spring and summer coming. Ready for the warmer weather. Hope everyone is doing well.5 -
I'm still out here, in maintenance as a generality, still up a few pounds since the holidays, but not that worried . . . maybe not worried enough?
I'm not sure what season it is here, in practical terms. Around a week ago, we were still having nighttime temps in the 20s F (around -4C), and this afternoon it got above 80 F (around 27C). With some sunnier, pleasanter days, I've gotten out on my bike a few times, including today. Part of the trail system I ride on is still flooded from Spring rains, so my options for distance are limited. Mostly using some repeats and meanderings in the nearby suburbs to put together rides around 12-15 miles.
Yesterday, I had my first row of the season on water, in a 4-person rowing shell (quad). I was happy that not only the rowing but the boat-carrying went well, because I've had some rotator cuff irritation over the Winter and have been going to physical therapy for that. It's mostly resolved now, I think. Water's still too cold to row regularly, but the quad is safer than single shells, so OK on a nice day. Hoping to row tomorrow, too.
Other than that, just trying to get my taxes finished (eek! cringe!) and motivate myself to do some Spring outdoor chores (pruning, flower garden clean-up).
We've had some Spring flowers since . . . well, I think the earliest ones started in February (tough little flowers!). The things blooming now won't last nearly as long, in the heat.
There are some photos of some of the current Spring flowers in the spoiler, if anyone likes that sort of thing. This is a hybrid Hellbore (Helleborus sp.), plus some striped squill (Puschkinia scilloides).
This is some double bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis) just starting to open up. They look like weird little pod people when they first emerge, then the leaves unfurl, and the flowers sort of squirt out the top . The more furled ones on the left blend into the soil a little, but you can see several early stages here. Eventually, the leaves will be fully unfurled from the flowers, we just aren't there yet
How is everyone else doing? Any good words on progress from any of our more recent arrivals, or questions about challenges you're running into? Updates from other long-term participants?6 -
@AnnPT77 . Oh my gosh , Ann, you are down to the wire on those taxes. Hope you're almost done. I'm glad I finished up mine in March. Less stress.
Loved the pics of your flowers coming up. I would love to be more of a gardener but I definitely don't have a green thumb.
I don't even receive all of the statements I need to do my taxes until mid-March, usually - sometimes later. That was true this year, too - mid-March. One recent year, I got an important statement literally on April 15. Sometimes I file for an extension! I do the taxes myself with Turbotax, and it's not that hard once I have all the needed statements in hand. I expect to finish over the weekend at the latest, but if there's some snag, I'll file for an extension again. 🤷♀️ (I admit to being a terrible procrastinator, and not just about taxes.)
I wouldn't say I have a green thumb, either. I have a lot of plants, indoors and out . . . but I've tried growing many, many more than are still here. If something lives, cool. If something dies, oh well, probably won't try that one again!2 -
@AnnPT77 I hear you about having yo wait on statements. One of ours got here on March 10th this year but that was the latest. I had all the rest entered ( I use TurboTax also) so that was all that was left to do. That's really late the year you didn't get it until April 15. Yeah, extensions are the way to go with that kind of situation. I use to do my mom and dad's taxes when they were still alive and my dad ALWAYS had me put them on extension regardless of when he got his statements.0

I did my dad's taxes, too, late on. There was not a single thing wrong with the man's brain ever, right up to his death at 87, it was just that he'd become legally blind in an accident at 83.
He'd always done his taxes on paper, with a calculator in hand. He was the kind of guy who'd start the forms early, maybe even before 12/31, then revise if needed once the statements arrived in the mail, file the instant they were all there. His financial picture didn't have all the weird late arrival stuff, so it was unusual for him to file later than end of January.
I'm totally the opposite: Wait until every single statement arrives, maybe procrastinate for a while, file a day or two before the due date. (I don't think I ever needed to file for an extension with his taxes.)
It was a little source of friction sometimes, that style difference, but never enough to blot out the love and trust between us . . . thankfully.3 -
As a tax accountant I have no issue with people doing their own tax returns. I still work during tax season, otherwise known as spring. I regularly get clients who used TurboTax and they'll send me their prior year return. It will be over 100 pages! Only 7 of those pages are an actual tax return.
When I do retire I will probably pay an Enrolled Agent to do my taxes. It's too much of a waste of time and energy to do one tax return a year even if it is my own.3 -
@AnnPT77 I'm jealous that you've been on the water already! We paddle our dragon boat on a lake and it is still mostly frozen over. We had some windy days recently so there's now about 10 feet of open water near the shoreline, which my dogs were thrilled to find yesterday. But it will be awhile before the dragon boat can go in; usually the beginning of May.
@Pdc654 Hope you're feeling 100% soon. You have things to do (strength training!). Good job on being so close to maintenance despite the illnesses and medications. We loved going to Vegas for the Barrett Jackson auctions. We never bought anything but loved to look at all the beautiful old cars. And of course would go to a Cirque show and do other things. But the last time we went, just prior to COVID, we decided it would be our last. It was just too expensive! At least you're mentally prepared for that 🙂
I didn't do well over Easter I'm afraid. And it always seems that if I have one "sweet tooth" relapse, I'm done and have to start re-disciplining (is that even a word?) myself all over again. But I can do it. I'm away this weekend and will be eating out, but I can manage that. I just can't order desserts!!!5
