Drive by check in. Good to see you some old familiar friends still posting here.๐
No changes in my spouse's condition. The myeloma remains dormant. That's the good news. She continues to get more immobile. The injections in her knees lessened her pain for a few weeks, but the effect abated more quickly than normal. They're going to try some cortisone injections next. ๐ค
Holding the line weight wise. I'm sort of resigned to holding around 200 pounds until this situation at home resolves itself. Getting out walking with the dog more. That's helping to lower the stress levels, too.
Keep up the good work, everyone. I read your posts here for inspiration now and then.5 -
Thank you @alteredsteve175 . Nice to see you posting here. I'm glad you are at least able to maintain your weight with all you have going on. I hope the cortisone injections help your wife's knees.0

Hang in there Steve!0

Think I've found my people. I'm 61 and a friend was staying with me this week and she took a photo of me and . . . deary deary me. I was not happy about it.
Anyway, May is the best month for new enterprises, so here I am.8 -

Welcome, @LaetitiaLouise! It's interesting that you'd mention the photo thing, because that's what triggered my dad to lose weight years back, after he retired and gained some - Christmas photos, in his case.
The good news is that - IMO, IME - improving fitness and losing weight are both achievable at any age, and the same general tactics work across the age spectrum, with some tweaks to adjust to circumstances that are maybe more individual vs. age related.
Please keep contributing to this thread, and if you have questions or hit some roadblocks, quite often people here - or elsewhere in the MFP Community - can help. I know we tend to feel that our age makes us special, but it's been surprising to me to see how much people with similar goals have in common, even if ages differ.
Wishing you success!4 -
I see it's been a while since I've chimed in here, so maybe it's time for an update.
First, though, how is everyone else doing? Any updates to keep this thread going as a social or tactical help to our fellow 60-somethings?
@alteredsteve175, it's good to hear from you. You're a champ, holding the line on bodyweight with so much stress in your life for so long now. Please know that I - and I'm sure others here - are sending strength, wishing you the smoothest possible course through these difficult time. Your steadfastness is inspiring.
Here in my life, it's finally starting to be Spring. On-water rowing season is slow to start this year - getting bouts of cold still, so the water's slow to warm up to a level I consider safe for our boats (some of which only have about 4 inches (10cm) of boat above the waterline, and are very tippy). I've had some nice bike rides out on the trails, though, and an area of Spring flooding has dropped enough to permit an additional chunk of trails to the North. (I feel safer traffic-wise biking on the trails, which start about 1.75 miles via manageable roads from my house.) Everything outdoors has greened up nicely, lots of good-smelling flowering trees and shrubs on my route.
Even indoors at home, this guy (wax plant, Hoya carnosa) is flowering and very fragrant in the evenings - kind of a baby powder scent. (Putting photo in spoiler to save space.)Besides that, there's more variety at the farmers' market now.Fresh local spinach and Hakurei turnips in my salad . . .I did get my taxes in on time, but now my state wants additional information. Best guess is that they're questioning my homestead property tax credit, for which I'm eligible some years and not others because of fluctuating income. I'm gathering a bunch of stuff to send in. It's always something, innit?
. . . and some delicious asparagus (broiled).
Yes, each of those is one serving, just for me.๐๐
Generally, life is good, though!

Best of luck Laetita!1

Hi @momzilla11 we're the same age. I haven't been in this group for a long time but have been on mfp for logging, thanks for sharing. I don't meal prep but I rotate the same basic foods & try something new occasionally. I cook for me & husband & toppers for our dogs0

I'm doing well after after effects of fatigue post covid. Finally having more normal energy days than less. I activated my gym membership after a long time. It has a really nice year round pool. I don't know how much I will be able to do post pinched nerve because I've learned once you have one, that part of your body gets weak & I don't want to risk another, it was very painful but I know I can go on the treadmill & swim. I still walk my dogs most every morning as I always have for about an hour. I've been maintaining at 151. My body looked more slim at that weight when I was working out a lot but like I said, I don't think I can go back to doing 3 HIIT classes a week, racquetball, stem classes, etc. We live 3 blocks away from a nice gym & I've been going for about 30 years no matter how much I weighed because I enjoy going but I'll focus on what I can do2

Hope everybody is doing well. I sure feel better now that I'm eating better and exercizing every day. This is my first post. I'll take any friend request as we are all in this together.5

Welcome, @cocobop764. I'm glad to hear that you're getting early positive results from your new healthier habits!0

Hello! I'm new to posting but not tracking my food and decided I need to put myself out here to help me with my journey. I'm 60 and need to lose up to 30lbs. This time working on my weight is different, I'm working on it with my therapist and creating healthy habits that include MFP tracking, journaling, meditation and using my support team (includes posting here) to get my feelings out vs eating over them. So, writing posts in this community is another uncomfortable step in my journey of growth. Nice to meet you all!9
-
Welcome to all the new people! You'll find this a very supportive thread. In fact the entire MFP community has been instrumental in helping me throughout my weight loss. Continue to read and participate. There is so much good information and advice on this board.2

Hello! Hoping to connect with like minded, over 60 folks working towards regaining fitness! Being older brings challenges of all kinds so this support will be awesome! I live with an autoimmune disease as well as Neuroendocrine cancer which are both under control but definitely have an impact. The key for me is starting slow and not overdoing it when I feel good or Iโm toast for a week. Anyone else have this challenge?6

Hi @barbarabunch Yes I've dealt with fatigue issues since age 40 when it really started to effect me. I played sports and pushed myself when working out before and went to only being able to walk 10 minutes a day to start and worked up as my body allowed. But even now if I push too hard I'm down for a few days. I've really learned to listen to my body over the last 20 yrs for sure. Hang in there be proud of yourself for every small step you take! I try to remember it's not what I can't do, but what I can๐3

Even when I weighed my max (232 pounds) I still went to the gym 3 or 4 times a week, and walked the dog daily. Simply because I enjoy movement. I believe that that is what prevented me from any obesity related ailments. No diabetes. No high cholesterol. No high blood pressure. Great blood work. I remember reading somewhere that "We exercise for our health and we eat sensibly for our weight". There's a lot of truth to that.
Like @AnnPT77 I am also back on the water. Sort of. We had to cancel dragon boating one night due to thunder and lightning. Then last week the wild fire smoke blew in thick so we had to cancel again. So disappointing! But at the same time my heart aches for those who are much more affected by the fires than me. Here's hoping that the upcoming week has us out paddling. It's such a wonderful feeling; the water, the physical effort, being in rhythm with your team mates. Love it!
My weight is holding steady. If I was at maintenance I would be rejoicing. But I'm not and therefore feeling a bit discouraged due to my own actions. My exercising is great (one day I had over 20,000 steps; a PB for me). I paddle, walk dogs, do some strength training, do some yoga, and I'm back doing deep water running classes. I allow myself one alcoholic drink on a Friday. But oh my, the food is a constant struggle! But I'll get there.....eventually ๐6 -
Hello and welcome, to @gigglybear93 and @barbarabunch . . . and anyone else whose intro post on the thread I may've missed!barbarabunch wrote: ยปHello! That sounds really challenging: Kudos to you for making a path toward fitness improvement.
In a way, I feel like starting where we are - slowly for our current condition - and not overdoing is key for most everyone who has fitness goals . . . but I don't want to minimize what that means with health challenges in the picture. Not the same thing at all, but I first started being routinely active (ohSOslowly!) after surgery/chemo/radiation for breast cancer, and a then-fresh hypothyroidism diagnosis, after a couple of decades of sedentary life and a high-stress job, so pretty physically depleted.
With a gradual, thoughtful approach, I would bet that you can surprise yourself with what you will accomplish in a few months to a year or two, with patience and persistence. I feel like an advantage we 60+ folks have over some of the young'uns is that we've had life experience with chipping away at big life goals, and eventually reaching success. I'm talking about things like getting an education, building a career, making a home, maybe raising a family, learning complex hobbies, etc. The same skills can apply to improving health and fitness.
Best wishes for success - I'm cheering for you!

Iโve determined, with the exception of this thread (hopefully?), that whenever I find a post that interests me enough to join in the conversation, my comment becomes the death of that thread and no more comments happen. Either my comments are so stunningly excellent that everyone else is speechless and unable to top them , or so mundane, boring and off the wall that it ruins the whole thread and people remove it from their bookmarks , or by the time I find it the post is outdated, old news and not a hot topic any more so no one reads it. Iโll vote for the first choice, hahahahahaha.4

Just picking on myself this morning. If you can laugh at yourself, life is more enjoyable. Hope everyone is doing well today! The tiniest moment of real sunshine decided to make a brief appearance through all the black rainclouds so I got the chance to soak up a few micrograms of Vitamin D.3

@SbetaK I thought that I was the death of threads! Iโve thought that it is due to the age of the thread because then it wouldnโt be due to me. Sorry, everyone, for ending this thread.3

@SbetaK, @MaggieGirl135: This thread didn't end, so it wasn't you. ๐๐1

Thanks for all the encouragement! Day 8 of Thyroid and Thrive program and I think itโs going to be helpful. Laid out well and set up for those of us with autoimmune diseases that need to go at it slow and focus on recovery as well as the workout. Connects to myfitnesspal where I log everything. Fingers crossed I can keep at it and not crash!6

I am part way through catching up, but this post stopped me in my tracks with a hearty lol moment! I have certainly felt like I was a harbinger of the end times myself here and there - I'm convinced it's the first choice ๐ ๐คฃ- back later once I'm caught up!2 -
Hey all you golden oldies! Seems I have been absent for awhile, *#@! stuff happens I guess ๐.
I was in theme park heaven for a week recently (Disneyland, California Adventure park, Universal Studios) with my daughter, son, daughter-in-law, my 2 grandkids, DIL'S good friend + her child...quite the group to be herded around - I will confess my daughter and I ditched them, here and there...
Got back from my trip and collapsed Thursday, then busy day yesterday and today looking after grandkids and getting caught up on watering, mail, etc.
Weight was up 8 lbs the first morning after flight home, but as I expected it has come down since then, at least 6 lbs has - still hoping the other 2 will follow tout suite!
Now I am out at my daughter's to pick up my cat + stay for a few days to look after hers as she left for a conference yesterday.
Really nice weather we are having - low to mid 20s (mid 70s F) and loving having tea out on my deck - I was having a nice cold Coke Zero out on her deck when I startedreading this thread lol. Loving life โค๏ธ hopefully that translates into food satisfaction & weightloss. Cheers ๐2 -
@Pdc654 - wowee!! Yippee!! You are SUCH an inspiration, so happy for you ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐ ๐
And love your next set of goals, very laudable but so perfectly sensible ๐ฅฐ1 -
Thank you @BCLadybug888!
I am actually looking forward to my next doctor appointment in July. Hoping the results will let me drop some of my meds. However, I'm well aware it's not just lifestyle and that there is a genetic component. Especially, for me, I may not be able to get off blood pressure meds
totally. My mom had to start taking BP medication in her 40s. She was not overweight and walked 3 or 4 miles daily, but I'm doing my best to eliminate the lifestyle factors related to high blood pressure.3
