LESS Alcohol ~ NOVEMBER 2023 ~ One Day at A Time

Hello everyone
We did go out for our agreed upon 1x weekly lunch and beer out, then home for the nap. I stuck to my 2 IPA's and I am good for a while.
In the olden days I would get up from that nap and continue on until I went to bed too squinty eyed to remember.
And I can certainly understand the extra energy when not drinking @MissMay . I wake up not in so much pain from arthritis when I don't drink.
@RockinRobyn672 which IPA's (brands) do you gravitate towards? I tend to really enjoy the more hoppy ones. I do hope to find a local OH brewery but it does not seem to be much of a thing in this part of the woods.3 -
Sat 11/4: Drinks (2) - It was a beautiful day to ride bikes on the Capital Trail. We captured some photos on the way back as the sun was setting. We stopped at our favorite farmhouse tavern (Indian Fields Tavern, Charles City) that sits by the trail. They also have their own brewery. I had one of their own craft beers with a Charles City Burger (I rarely eat a burger). If you ever are out that way, I highly recommend that burger. I also had one glass of wine with dinner. In the past I would have helped DH finish off the bottle, so I'm counting it as a small victory. I'm planning the next four days as AF.

@lmlmrn To answer your question about the brands of IPAs that I like, in the Virginia Beach area there are lots of breweries, so it's a huge temptation here. A few of my " go-tos" from the grocery store include: Hazy Little Thing, Atomic Torpedo, Voodoo Ranger, Dogfish Head and The Truth (to name a few). What are your faves?2

Checking in - have not been drinking and don't plan to. Hopefully I'll be reporting the inches lost from my waist by month-end. I'm with @SunnyDays930, following the plan of no drinks. I hope to follow this through the holidays and just make this a permanent thing.7
-
Beautiful pics @RockinRobyn672. All that fresh air is so great for you.
@globalhiker I like your way of thinking. Since the alcohol equation is A= inches.
If you can get through the holidays without, you can do anything!!!👍

3rd day consecutive for me, half way to sixth day which is my goal this week.
Last night at a food place that is closing for good, there was a blow out sale on drinks and food. 75% off. My hubs was upset because I would not order a high end drink at 75% less.
Here is my theory, he orders at 75% off, knows it is a deal. CONTINUES TO DRINK BEYOND what is healthy. I was correct, that exact situation happened. Then came stupid-angry husband (like I didn't see that writing on the wall).
Still the question as to WHY I would not take advantage of the high end booze at 75% went on even once at home. I was very thankful for the H00 in a stemmed glass at 75% off. And today I am up and about like a child on Christmas morning
HAPPY MONDAY EVERYONE!!! 😎10 -
First post this month...just back from a long weekend of wedding festivities for a family member- had a blast and haven't been counting or logging A but have definitely overindulged this month so far. Gonna get back on track now.6

I realized this morning I have not posted yet for November.

Nov: 7 days AF , 0 days A.
This is my 12th day in a row AF. I haven't done this long since January when I went 21. I am amazed that I have gotten this many and I plan to keep going as there doesn't seem to be any downside. Observations:
Better sleep
losing weight
clearer thinking
getting more done
getting along better with husband
saving so much $$$
not waking up wondering what I said, did, who I insulted etc
I will be happy going into the holidays fully present and feeling my best.

Rolling Total: 3 AF Days out of 6 - It was supposed to be 4 AF days (had two drinks on Sunday when 0 was planned). I have started the week off with zero and plan still to hold off until Thursday (3 days in a row) then no more than 2 on Thursday. We're getting ready to move back to Florida at the end of December, which is making it been hard for me to stick to my LA plans here in Virginia. It's my thinking that it may be my last time at a favorite brewery, etc. before we're out of here. There are so many great craft breweries with great food here and we're going out more often.
@MissMay I know what you mean about that "person" who shows his angry stupid face on occasion for similar reasons. BTW, your "A = inches" equation is very helpful to me. Sure, I know that's why my weight has been inching up over the years, but now I'm going to bring up that equation in my mind when I'm thinking about going for "one more" drink! The other helpful mind-trick for me is planning my weekly A days (thanks @dawnbgethealthy).
@globalhiker and @SunnyDays930 I have found "no A" easier than "less A" once I've made that decision.7 -
Ugh been sick. The boy brought it over last week, yay. With me under the weather, everybody fends for themselves, so wife ordered several meals on UberEats over the weekend. I forced them down in lieu of better options and quickly realized, if I never eat another McMuffin, it won't make me sad. Abu Omar has gone downhill and their chicken shawarma is dry and gross, and their hummus may be the worst I've ever tried. The caldo de pollo Columbiano with arepas wasn't bad, but not spectacular. Generally speaking, I'm finding restaurants in general less and less appealing. On the other hand, my preferred approach of having prepared foods ready to rock in the sous vide makes life a lot easier when I'm not well.
So a while back, the monks decided they're in the prayer business, not the liquor business, or something along those lines, and Chartreuse has become VERY hard to get. (Edit - some sources state that this is entirely untrue, and that the Carthusian monastary is cranking out record volumes, it's just that demand has somehow outstripped supply lately. IDK.) I happened upon a bottle of yellow, although I prefer the green, and snagged it up. Had a few sips of that at the end of the night. Hey, it's medicinal. O.o It's medicinal, right?
Got a few really cool things on vinyl and a few more coming, and really enjoying the tangible aspects of listening to music again.
Not keeping count, but still satisfied with how I'm doing on the LA front.

@RockinRobyn672 Back in the PNW like near you there were/are so many micro breweries that it is overwhelming. And so many tap houses that keep anywhere from 30-50 rotating taps ...but back to your question, my grocery store go too's are by Elysian, Spacedust and Skankdust. I really like them bitter/hoppy.
Yesterday and today I had 1/2 glass of wine with dinner then stopped. I was looking back and I started on this thread in December 2019 and I started posting in January 2020. I remember when I celebrated 24 hours AF.
So thank you @MissMay for keep this going each month. I look back to then and to where I am now, it is not perfect but I have come so far.
so the nosy neighbors ......

I had a serious craving around 5 yesterday. I pictured myself having dinner at the bar with a nice glass of wine but as Kate Bee says, I "played the movie until the end" in my mind. My movie would have ended with me not stopping at what I had at the bar, but buying a bottle and bringing it home. Fast forward to 2 am and waking up with a racing heart and feeling like my teeth are wearing sweaters. No thank you.
Today is day 13 AF. Onward!9 -

Sorry to hear you have been ill.
🤯😳😱 these are the faces I see when you say you do the majority of the food prep and cooking in your home and now your having to eat poor grub while trying to get better.
Wishing you mending vibes.

@lmlmrn I don't recall that part of Ohio being so vast with the necessities we all need. 😭
Your only 3 hours from my Sister. Now, unless you guys are living in the middle of an flatlander cornfield? LOL.....just kidding.
We were in the same situation when we lived in Maine. At least a 45 minute drive to Walmart, a decent medical facility or a known chain eatery. In the bad Winter weather it was awful to have to think about the travel out of town for staples.
Anyhow, one word about local breweries down here.
~CHERRY SOUR~
Tried this for the first time a few months ago, no more than a 4 ounce pour. It was like a glass of muddled cherries, so richly red and only slightly on the sour side.
Had to reel it in once I tasted that. I was glad it was pricey by the pour, and an 8 ounce glass would be too much acid at once.
The sock family faired very well during your move. They will soon need flannel.
Wonderful to have you back.

Tue 11/7: AF - Made it 2 days in a row AF, got a good workout in, my weight is down (A = inches!).
November Rolling Total: 4 AF Days out of 7
11/8: I've been reading everyone's posts and smiling. I love everyone's sense of humor. @mfowler883 hope you feel better soon. @MissMay, I laughed out loud at your faces RE: mfowler's post. @lmlmrn I love the sock family photos (Ha!). Keep them coming! I also am fond of those Elysian beers (yummy!).
The rest of this week is going to be challenging for me. DH has just finished and submitted a huge application/report that he's been working on for two years for the college. It's for SACS accreditation. He is in a celebratory mood so we'll probably be going out. And Thursday's supposed to be pretty here (last bit of warmer weather) so he's going to take the day off and we plan to do a long bike ride. This weekend we're heading to see our eldest son and "unmarried" daughter-in-law, who live near Baltimore. I haven't thought it out yet but I need to "play out the stories" (@SunnyDays930). My goal is 2 A days this week with a limit of two each day.4 -
I posted earlier this month about "lofty goals" - and the day has arrived.
My goal is NA (not LA!) today until next Friday which will be the longest stretch in a while for me...I'm excited and really trying to focus on the positives (of which there are SO many!) but I cannot help but be apprehensive of failure...
So far this month 5 A (only one unplanned though) and 2 AF - a dry stretch is necessary to hit my goal of only 12 A days this month and 18 LA/NA.6 -
I joined @2timesacharmmfp with the lofty goal of drinking only on Thanksgiving weekend this month. Well, I broke that rule on Saturday, having dinner with an old friend. We always have beer. I had two delicious pints of the 4% kind over several hours. Had a great time catching up! But, my sleep was affected that night.
My wife has been facing a very stressful work situation and has been having martinis some work nights. I've stayed away so far. I really like a big mug of herbal tea in the evening. I start with chamomile tea bag and add powdered ginger, fennel seeds, and a sage leaf. The result is a strong brew with lots of flavor. That usually gets me through.
Thanks to @missmay and congratulations to the many who are fighting the good fight!

Awesome job!! I chuckled when you said teeth wearing sweaters,... although I know there is nothing funny about that. I can relate to racing heartbeat! Proud of you!!5 -
Hi everyone! Where has the month gone? I haven’t checked in- the days are getting away from me! I was happy to read everyone posts!
I haven’t had any AF days this month, which, to be honest, I could use if I want to drop a couple of pounds. But, I’ve stayed with just one during the weekday and no more than two on only one of the weekend days, so it’s still “less”. Except tonight, I poured that extra half glass of wine.
I have agita because I am leaving for a business trip to Nashville tomorrow- and don’t know What to wear! I’m not packed yet. I have pretty, floral embroidered cowboy boots that I trot out every so often, but because they are not a wardrobe staple for me, I’m not sure how to style them. Oh the drama! Of course I need to wear cowboy boots in Nashville, but the jeans I’d wear them with feel a little snug- I’m so
bloated from PMS! Ugh. First world
problems, I know. But hey I gotta look decent! Vanity, Thy Name is Woman!!! Haha!5 -
The pics are from Santorini, Athens, and Mykonos.
I have had wine tastings from all the different wine regions in Greece while traveling which make me 0 AF days thus far for November. Keeping to my daily personal limit which compared to this type of trip last year is probably twice as less.

Will be back home on Sunday and after reading all the wonderful posts, goals and challenges from you, I am looking forward to a daily check in.
That really works for my accountability when I can sit with my planner and diary and plan/review AF / A days and log updates here.
I thought I could be AF on half my vacay days but admittedly, vacations are always difficult for me to drink less wine for all the standard reasons and excuses: Sunsets, special dinners, lunch on the beach front after a tour, trying a new varietal in another region of Greece, and wine just because.
Lastly, my DH got sick 5 days ago and is finally feeling better. But talk about an unexpected interruption of a vacation. So there’s that too which I allowed it to frustrate me at times and then imbibed while he slept. Awful right? Ok enough of that reality. But I did really good with my daily limits so at least that is a win!
I am rooting for you all from a distance and will be back soon.

I love the pictures! Sorry to hear your hubby got sick though. That’s no fun. Enjoy the rest of your time there, and great job in your goals!1 -
We went out for dinner last night at one of our favorite restaurants, taking advantage of their off-season Wednesday night special (very fresh flounder, blackened) and then to a bar to listen to music. I am happy to say I remained AF. I've stuck to the plan so far this week. I drank water with dinner and had a Stella 0.0 at the bar. I prepped DH before we went out, which helped. He had a couple strong drinks at each place so I was happy to be the DD.
As I noted earlier, the next three days are going to be a challenge. We're doing a long bike ride today, and visiting our son over the next couple. We will be eating out every day I'm sure. I will be taking my own NA stash of beer, which will help. I plan to keep the A to no more than two. If I "play out the story" of drinking more, I will have gained back the recent weight that I've lost.
