Thinking about joining the gym down the street so I can get a mid-day workout in. Wondering if anyone who does this regularly has any tips for quick workouts and getting back to work on-time and looking presentable?

Thanks all!

I do. I almost solely go over my lunch break. I'm fortunate that my job is one where I can be gone for an hour and fifteen minutes. I work about a mile from the gym, change quickly, get 45-60 minutes exercising in. After, I am super fast in the locker room and take a quick shower to rinse off, and leave my hair up in a ponytail for the rest of the day. Then I eat lunch at my desk while working.

How long is your lunch break?

My break can be flexible (but usually around 1 hour) and the distance sounds similar to your situation. So glad to know it can be done!
  • I walk a few laps around the building...I have an office job, so any excuse to get up and move alittle is a good one :D

We have a small gym at work that I'm grateful for - I know how lucky I am! I work out at least 4 days a week during my lunch hour. I go back to work red in the face and overheated, but I don't really care. If I didn't have the gym here I would either have to work out in the evenings at home or go to a gym at night. I'm so glad I can get the majority done during the day, at night I still do some strength training or ab work a few nights a week.

i work for the goverment and were paid to go to the gym 3 times a week. I go in conjunction with my lunch break so I eat my lunch at my desk an hour before i go to gym, then use the whole 1/1/2 hours to work out, shower etc. nice bene to have.
  • At my last job, my nearby gym had 45 minutes classes geared towards people at work at it was perfect! I favored ones like yoga and pilates instead of cardio because I would otherwise end up overheated and keep sweating for another 2 hours despite showering.

I agree and walk a lot at lunch too. I'm finding that I need my mornings and evenings for other activities though so the best time for a more serious workout is mid-day.

I've often considered this, because my gym is less than 1/2 a mile from my office! However I tend to get very red in the face while working out, so I've always been too nervous about it. Now I'm thinking maybe I should just bite the bullet and see how it goes! Gotta take advantage of how close it is to my office.

I agree...I love working out while at work...I feel better, and don't have to feel rushed later on in the evening if I can't fit it in
  • I do with a group of co-workers 2-3 times a week. Today we played Racquetball for about 25-30 minutes. We are lucky we work at a University that has a brand new Recreation/Wellness center on campus.

I go to the gym that's in the same building as my office everyday during lunch. Thankfully, my boss doesn't have a problem with me coming in a little early and having a longer lunch so I can get a full workout and shower during my lunch.

I've tried it and it doesn't work for me ... I get pretty dang sweaty when I work out, and it takes me too long to cool off! Can't go back to work sweating through my shirt, and sometimes even a quick cold shower doesn't shut off the waterworks.

That sounds so nice. I work for a university too, but they charge serious $$$ for employees to use the gym. So I go to a different one nearby. Wish that weren't the case, but oh well.

I run home on my lunch break quite often and do my workout then. I just come back to work with my hair wet from my shower and something to secure it with when it's dry. If I have something I have to do immediately after work that day, I will bring my curling iron back to work with me to touch up if necessary.

I also am a firm believer in body spray, amazing what that covers :)

Also, strength training is less sweaty typically for me and I can do it w/o showering if I really need to.

    Thanks, great tips!
  • We use to be able to do group fitness (zumba, yoga, step, etc) for free too but since we have a brand new wellness center we have to pay an annual $320 membership. I won't complain though I do enjoy the gym and racquetball courts.

I have a gym two blocks from my office, so I go every work day on my hour lunch break. It's so much easier to make myself go, because, well, what else would I do on my lunch break from my office job? Sit on my *kitten* some more? I love it!
