JANUARY 2024 Monthly Running Challenge
WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive; it gets very talkative...miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still very welcome to join in - no requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, that's it you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to help keep you accountable, to enjoy a virtual post-run coffee with your fellow runners, and to make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the December 2023 Monthly Running Challenge which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10904227/december-2023-monthly-running-challenge/p1
Anyone can join in, new and old, and if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members ranging from total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch. You never need to be ashamed of your miles. If you are making the effort, you will find only support here.
Here are the details from last month that apply again:
Anybody want to join in for a running challenge? Set a goal here and update us every day. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (if creating one seems difficult, or you're like me and can't be bothered, then just type in your daily miles in this thread).
You can run, walk, or do treadmill - just be consistent. Don't let the high (or low) goals of others intimidate you. Some do 25 miles, others do 50, some go higher than that, some do lower; it's entirely your goal and therefore completely up to you. We help motivate each other, so what do you say? If you're new to running, set a low goal. If you're from a part of the world where miles aren't your thing, log your distances in KMs. And if you'd rather log your progress by time rather than distance, then you're entirely free to do that as well.
Feel free to set your goal now but wait until January 1, 2024 to start logging your runs!
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:

Find a small group of runners that encourage and offer food support:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10573619/runners-that-need-some-nutritional-accountability#latest
Note: we also have a group on Strava and Facebook.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did (don't forget to hit the bookmark in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread). Simply keep a running tally of what you've done this month and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chit-chat it up, even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things (sometimes even about running). It's a very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time), talk about a recent or up-coming race, ask questions, provide answers, or just lurk-n-learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs? Follow the examples of many other challenge members. Even take a peek at last month's thread (posted above).
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account at http://www.tickerfactory.comandcreate your ticker. Then you need to update it after you finish a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your PIN in that you set when you created your ticker account. Then, where it says "Your current cumulative value", there is an add button. Simply add the distance that you just did, and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
After adding your new miles (or KMs) to your ticker, you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the image (img) tags around that link. So it will look something like the following (but removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker:
Use the link that ends in .png
Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
Remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow. There's no judgment, we all started somewhere. And no comparisons, except with your former self. Don't compare your Chapter 1 to somebody else’s Chapter 20.

You may see some phrases / words that are unique to our little group when it comes to describing some of our runs. It is a mash-up of words that seem to best describe the way the run felt that day. Here are some examples. Feel free to come up with your own to add to the dictionary 😃

Steve Jobs explains the secret to focus:
"People think focus means saying yes to the thing you've got to focus on. But that's not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully. I'm actually as proud of the things we haven't done as the things we have done. Innovation is saying no to 1,000 things."

2024 is going to be here before you know it! Do you have resolutions? Goals? Thoughts? Plans?
My motto going forward, something I heard on the radio...
Be where your feet are!10 -
I don't know what my goals/plans are for 2024 yet, but just popping in so I will get notifications for January. See all of you awesome people next year! 😄10
-
I'll try to check in from time to time.
No fitness goals other than listen to my body.11 -
I'll have to think about my goals for 2024. I can't believe it is already the new year. Thanks for setting us up @AlphaHowls !10
-
I am still trying to determine a goal for January as well as for the year overall. January may end up being a get out and do as much as I am able with no specific mileage goal.
I also joined Run the Year - 2024 but haven't figured out my goal there yet either. May await to hear what my doctors think I will be able to do. But I don't see them again until Jan 8th. Hmmm. I guess I could set something and then adjust if necessary. If anyone else has joined and wants to form a team let me know. I likely won't be huge mileage contributor like some others but I am hoping to be consistent8 -
Hi! I’m new to the group. No fitness goals yet other than getting into a groove. Looking forward to being a member here.12
-
Hello, I’m new here to the app. Fitness goal is just to clean up my eating. I’m good Monday through Friday lunch time and then it goes to trash for the weekend lol.
I’m pretty consistent on my lifting and running. My goal is to up my miles and see where I end up at the end of 2024.
Here’s to 2024 and everyone make it the best year yet! 🥂11 -
Hello friends! For those I know, good to check in and see you still here and plugging away, at whatever level you can. Hello to new people who have joined in the last few months and are joining in a new year. It's a great and supportive group that I've missed.
So, 2023 wasn't a great year and I fell off the running habit pretty badly after two surgeries and long-ish recoveries. Physically I've been doing well but really struggling with focus and motivation. Job stress and exhaustion and being out of the habit has really led to very inconsistent running. I've been regular with strength training but not at the levels I was. It's hard not to reflect back to where I was before this and I feel so out of shape. I am trying not to dwell on that and do what I can to work my way back slowly.
Oh I did do two 5k races this year! One in January and one in December, to open and close the year. What a difference in experience, as the December one I really struggled just to finish at a slow pace (it was a fun run kind of thing and my friends were definitely slowing way down for me). I was wiped out after.
I have been thinking I need to pick a race an start over from scratch with training. But now...one more surgery coming up in a couple of weeks so I will be out from any kind of activity for another 6 weeks at least. Sigh. I can do this. And then I can build up again. My good friend is finishing up her 50 states marathon quest in September and I am hopeful that I can train to do the half so I can go and support her. That will be a good goal to start moving again, gradually.
I know many of you have worked through and are dealing with health issues and have kept going, doing what you can. Well done, and thanks for sharing. Great work to those of you who had a great running year and accomplished your goals. I don't promise to be posting a lot but I will check in once in a while and hopefully be back to at least some consistency in a couple of months. Just wanted to take a chance to say happy new year and best to all of you for 2024.12 -
For the first time in a few years I don't really have a plan for 2024 on the whole. I am trying for a new HM PR in 2 weeks, so technically 2024.
Right now I feel like I need to take some pressure off and allow myself to just enjoy running. Training has been adding to general life stress and running is supposed to be stress relief. I'm setting a goal of 1200 miles for the year. I'll decide in a few months if I want to set any goals beyond that.8 -
I am going to sign up again for Run the Year. I guess this is year 3 for me and I like looking at the stats. I have been on teams both times but will probably just go it alone this year. Mostly I am excited about the Running Poster too. For January not yet sure if I will set a goal other than my normal 100 miles.
Welcome to the new members.6 -
Hello! I will be running in a 24hr Ultra in October and my goal for January is to start training.
Any marathon or ultra runners here? I can use any advice and tips I can get! This is my first long race and I’ve done many 5 and 10K races in the past. I’m running this year just to finish, not to win. I’ve never been very fast but I’d also like to not be dead last 😅
For now I set a target for myself at 100 miles for the month of January, and holding my pace consistently between 10-11min/mi by the end of the month. I currently can run up to 5miles avg 12min/mi but my pace is very sporadic.9 -

Hey welcome to the thread. There are a bunch of 100+ miles/month people here. The best I got in 2023 was about 70/month, but I'm still working on it.
Stick with this group for a few weeks and you'll see some of the moster training some do, and the endless support that everyone gives. It's pretty remarkable.
Here's to you doing your Ultra this year.
Cheers 🥂5 -
2024 is hopefully going to be a big mileage year for me with the Hanover marathon in April and the Berlin marathon in September. I want to aim for 200 km/month (125 miles) -2400km for the year.
Also, I want to get two PBs in the marathon and have two good races that I have inner peace about.
And finally, the last goal of mine which is maybe a bit contradictory is to prioritise having fun on my runs over chasing the “speed” goals I just mentioned. At the end of the day improvement would be nice but the main thing for me is to keep enjoying being out there so as to keep up the habit. For me this requires balance and prioritising fun runs over all things interval related unless I’m really up for it mentally.9 -
Great goal so far. Welcome to all the new people. You will find the group here is very supportive.
Thanks @katharmonic I've been wondering how you are getting along. I'm glad that you checked in with us. I do hope that your next surgery goes well and that you are back to running after you heal. Please keep us informed on how you are doing every once in a while. I hope you are able to work up to the HM in Sept to support your friend. A marathon in all 50 states is a huge accomplishment for her!
What is the Running Poster @SummerSkier ?
I haven't decided on my 2024 or Jan goals yet. I guess I need to do that soon - like tomorrow. LOL3 -
Going for 130 for January.
Going for 1700 for 2024.
My 2023 goal was a Marathon... and 1700 miles.
Got the first one done, but fell ~300 short on the second (mostly due to ~5weeks of being out with injuries and about 5weeks of long haul vacays).
No races planned this year; aiming for streaks and consistency and nailing 1700m in runs.

@Laurz9191 love this!! 😊😊
I stopped enjoying it when training for, and running a marathon.
You're a legend for doing 2 !!! 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽3 -

Hi @kbrown1527
Welcome! You've come to the right place!
This is a great group! ... There's a core of us that both post on here regularly and are active on Strava daily...
@Laurz9191 is running two Marathons this year.
@eleanorhawkins is running an ultra this year (and has a fair few marathons under her belt).
@AlphaHowls runs Half marathons daily (!!!) and probably gets in a full one every month or so.
@martaindale , myself and @Scott6255 all have done full marathons too in the last 12-24months.
Apols if I've missed anyone..
So plenty of tips and advice to go around! 😊
As I said... Great group!!!6 -
@quilteryoyo the running poster is a huge poster which you crayon / color in as you complete your miles. I did it in 2021 and it was a lot of fun. That year it was a book of clocks. I did not sign up for it last year and sort of missed it. So nicely visual and I used it to track just running miles. You can order it separately from your registration if you join Run the Edge again

@kbrown1527 Oooooh fun, what is the format of the ultra? Is it a backyard or a go as far as you can in 24hrs or what? What kind of goal are you thinking of? Is it your first ultra? What's the most you've done before if so? So many questions lol.4 -
Goals... I was kind of disappointed just now to see per Garmin that I ran 1986.6km in 2023, I would have liked to get another run in this last week but husband's poor health and the fact that I'm still recovering from my 8hr club Backyard made that impossible. Soooo, I would like to get to 2000km in 2024 or, better still, 2024km. I have an official Backyard Ultra at the beginning of Feb, with the goal being between 8 and 12 hours depending on how it feels and how crazy I feel on the day. Then there's a mountain 40km at the beginning of March and a 60km (yikes!) in May.
No fixed distance goal for January, just to do my best to prepare for my official Backyard at the start of Feb. Plus, pf course, get back on top of the damn strength training and pilates while remaining sane and healthy in complicated circumstances. Hmmm.6 -

These 24 hr races intrigue me but not in the way where I think I might do it. Good luck!
Also, so many questions! You mention having run lots of 5k, 10k. How long have you been running? Where are you starting from mileage-wise? How many days a week are you running now? What got you interested in this particular event?
Obv I’m working on limited info but I would encourage you to focus on speed OR endurance as you start training. Cutting 1-2 min/mile in a month is a big goal, one that I would be unable to do for sure. If a 100 mile goal also represents a significant increase in mileage, you’re at a higher risk of burning out or getting injured by tackling both at the same time. 10 months is a long time. It’s a marathon (or ultra in your case), not a sprint. Gotta have a running analogy in a running thread! Is 12 min/mi a truly easy pace? Race pace? Something in between? For example, my current paces range from around 9:05 to 11:30 depending on the purpose of the run (HM pace-based intervals down to recovery). During the summer I am more in the 10:45-12 min range. That shift in paces happens over the first couple of months as temps shift and my training plan ramps up.6 -
Random for the day:I was looking up symptoms over December and found this:

Hello runners! I'm coming back for the second month.
Goal for January = 38 miles
Goal for 2024 = 1,000 miles
I'm training for my first marathon in Sept 24.
I will be running 5ks, 10ks and at least one half marathon through the year as I get to train for those distances.
I have a few other things going on in my academic, professional and personal life. 2024 is going to be a good year.
Good luck to all of you and I look forward to seeing your updates.10 -
Thanks for setting up January @AlphaHowls!
I’m aiming for 60 miles for January.
I just signed up for “run the year” for 2024.
Hopefully I can end up on a team. This’ll be my first year doing this.
@SummerSkier thanks for the link to the RTY site! I’ll look for your team. 😀
Oh, and a goal of mine for 2024 is to walk/run several races in 2024, mainly between 5K & 10K distances, including the April 20th 10K that I already signed up for.
I got on Athlinks earlier today and realized I’ve participated in almost 60 races (ranging from 5Ks to marathons) and 2 sprint triathlons in my past life.
Here’s to 2024!! 🥂 🎉
This is an amazing and inspiring group! Thanks for the encouragement and support!10 -
Great goal everyone.
Love the shoes @AlphaHowls !
I joined RTY and bONs team! I'll try to decide on goals tomorrow. I didn't have time today to sit down and think about it.

@eleanorhawkins a friend of ours hosts a “red barn challenge” every year. It’s a chip timed event around the pond and some fields at their farm.. about a 1mi loop. Goal is to do as many laps as possible in 24hrs. I have no idea what my personal target would be, but I see in the previous years some experienced racers have completed over 100mi! I am a total noob when it comes to long distance running and don’t have a clue what to expect or what I am capable of.. but I THINK I could shoot for 75-80miles as a beginner.
This is my first Ultra! I’ve done a few 5 and 10Ks as far as races go, but longest run distance was 15mi, 2 years ago! I’ve never really payed much attention to pace, just ran for fun.
My “training” for January is to get comfortable paying attention to and setting a consistent pace in order to build my endurance for the upcoming months.

Morning all.
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!!
Hope everyone had a great night last night.
Off the mark with a gentle 4.36 (7k), at much slower pace of 10"47. Precautionary for awhile. Don't want to risk an ankle injury.
Dry January here we go...

@tarun_yadavA Good job getting in your first run of the year!
I’m going to take today off. So tired. They finally posted the race results today. Last year I ran a 52:49:90. This year, I ran a 52.49:10. So yes my time was better than last year, but by 8/10 of a second . I’ll take it!
Other than that the race was mostly uneventful. My splits were more consistent than last year and I enjoyed having 2 of my kids waiting at the half way point of each lap. That definitely gave me some extra motivation.7
