LESS Alcohol ~ January 2024 ~ One Day at A Time

My goal for January is to have a “socially “ damp one! Shooting for 5 dry days a week. Today we went out to dinner with some friends and I indulged with some wine 🍷. Currently no more planned social activities for this week, so unless I cave or something unexpected comes up, I’m on track to meet this weeks goal.
So….

Dry January got wet. Hubby wanted to go out for wings. I know I am responsible for my own alcohol decisions but I could not resist 2 glasses of wine at happy hour prices. This morning I told him I can't go to places that serve alcohol until I feel stronger, and he was cool with that. Onward.8 -
I wasn’t feeling like it much, but had some planned white wine last night anyway. Mainly because it was on my calendar and possibly had a little FOMO.
AF until Sunday to meet my weekly/monthly goals.
Also heading to a new class at the gym at 11:00 today to also ease back into body conditioning.
January goals 🎉

Doctor told me yesterday I lost 5 lbs. since December. I was surprised since the only exercise I have been doing that is new is weightlifting so you'd think I'd be heavier. At least I am heading in the right downward direction. I didn't really change anything since Nov or Dec, but suspect some sort of hormonal "rebalancing" is going on and my liver may be healthier so it's finally doing it's job burning fat. It's because I ditched the wine.
BUT, to be honest, I am dreaming of dinner and wine on Valentines Day. I plan to keep AF until then.

It is exciting and motivating to see so many new people here! This thread is full of wonderful LA friends and we’re here to support each other with whatever less alcohol means to each of us.
@annliz23 Welcome! The good news is every day is a new day to begin again and move on when we hit bumps along the journey.
@Jthanmyfitnesspal and @ahoy_m8 I know I also need nutritious food to fuel my weight, body and health goals over alcohol! I finally realized this about a year ago when I began my own quest for LA. Too much wine was so counterproductive for me.
May everyone find your own best resolve this weekend!4 -
I love the idea of "Damp January"! Never heard of it before; only Dry January
Wine has definetly assisted with my weight gain over the last few months. My goals are not to drink at home, only in social situations and stick to vodka sodas. Ive been AF so far in January but have back to back birthday celebrations coming up. I will have a cocktail(s) but not consume as much as I normally would.

So exciting and encouraging to see all the new people in this thread! Dry, Damp, whatever your goals, this is the place to be
So far 1 A, 3 AF for Jan
Weight was up earlier this week which was not surprising...just a bit disheartening that I haven't been where I wanted to be since last year and with the add'l holiday gain...I'm inching close to my highest weight ever since being pregnant. Today down 3 lbs so I'm assuming there's some water weight in there, but I restarted my baseline for loss to Monday's weight.6 -
My goal for January is to have a “socially “ damp one! Shooting for 5 dry days a week. Today was easy peasy, as my students used to say. I got in a good walk with the dog, lots of gym time, and no alcohol. And bonus…. My weight was back down to pre- holidays!
Hope you are all having success with the start of your weekend.

Hello first Saturday of 2024
Wondering when our part of Florida will warm up? I mean come on, I moved here for warmth and no snow. It has been unseasonably cold since October. This is a long stretch of too chilly.
5 consecutive days no alcohol for me (amid wicked emotional stress at work place). No interest in searching alcohol out or dreaming of it.
As another poster here put it-
This place we have here is for ANY amount of LESS alcohol you wish to rid from your life.
From all if it, to just one less drink yearly, monthly or daily. Do LESS your way, to feel more in control.
We did not all start out(Mid January 2018 for my start date) with a goal of being totally dry for January.
We decide our own comfortable goals and path to drinking less. We are all different when it comes to this. And I appreciate all your individual strengths.
Hoping to hear from our other former contributors from years past and present.
Canada and Pittsburgh come into my mind right off. (Hope your doing well)

Happy Saturday, everyone!
Back on track here. Last night, husband and I decided after work to walk to a nearby shopping center (about 1 mile walk) to go to dinner and do some shopping. Normally, we stop at the winery there and get me a bottle of wine, but we skipped that on this trip. Watching the waiters walk by with glasses of wine for other tables was a little frustrating, but I did not order one with dinner! Small victory!

This is my 3rd dry January. First time I successfully completed it. Last year I came up short. This year so far so good. Many benefits already in just 6 days. Lost a pound and a half, sleep has improved, my resting heart rate has dropped 10 points 😳, eyes and skin brighter. I had worked myself up to an almost daily drinker of multiple glasses of wine. Hopefully will reduce consumption of alcohol for the rest of the year.8

@MissMay thank you always for sharing your insight on LESS alcohol with us. Needed to hear todays post.
@soccermom004 my story is similar as I was nearly a daily drinker of lots of wine. That changed one year ago as I realized it wasn’t personally serving my purpose any longer. Congrats on all those fantastic and tangible benefits of abstaining.6 -
Happy that I stuck to my plan yesterday. Dinner with friends at a Mexican restaurant. I had one margarita and that was it. We ended the evening at our house and had a nice cup of tea. This event counts as "A (as planned)"!

My DH came back from his annual physical appt. on Friday with news he’s moved from pre-diabetic to diabetic this year. Now we’re going to a dietitian to learn more about healthier eating patterns for him (and me) and retest his blood labs in three months. He will have to immediately start mirroring my low carb/low sugar diet and increase vegetables, also paying attention to portions. I am sure the culprits are his love of stacks of pancakes and way too many sweets. But, good health is really everything as we get older so a critical wake up call for both of us.
Did make it back to the gym once and now that I’m feeling better I hope to repeat that. But, always prefer walking in the sunshine!
Feels like such a cold, sleepy month of short winter days!

Went to SIL's house tonight to watch Oppenheimer and have dinner. I stuck with seltzer and juice in a pretty glass. If I had indulged, I would have no idea what was going on with that very long, but very good movie.6 -
Ran errands this evening, which is often a trigger for me to "just stop by" the store and pick up wine. I often buy smallish amounts (enough for 1 or 2 days), because I know that if it's in the house I'll drink it. So often when I'm running errands in the evening, it will cause me to crave wine.
Small victory, but feels good!

My goal for January is to have a “socially “ damp one! Shooting for 5 dry days out of 7. I definitely have definitely noticed that I am sleeping better already. The one day that I did drink, I woke up more frequently with my heart pounding. And since I am working on lowering my blood pressure naturally, anything to do with my ticker is worth noting.
So….

Well, my co-MIL who had childhood polio, now has Crohns, and several other really serious health issues, has been in crisis since the New Year. She's the person who says "Oh, no, it's OK, everything is fine, no problem" as she lays on a gurney in the ER flat-lining. Checked herself out of the hospital AMA couple days ago, only to be put in an ambulance by her son back to hospital yesterday. Middle Daughter is the only one who seems to be her voice of reason, getting her to agree to medical intervention. That's kinda comical, as MD is the family " crazy" one, who is oddly mostly correct in these situations.
Stress level is high, I'm at the bottom of a bottle of Pinot Grigio, I have absolutely no need for sympathy, just overwhelmed by fear for a lady that I love and respect.
Thought I had a plan for abstinence or moderation for 2024. Out the window for now. Or should that plan double up with adversity ?? Manana.13 -

@forestdweller1
I am sorry to hear your co-MIL has those health issues. She seems to not want others to worry about her health conditions from your post. It is a brave gesture for her to keep people from stressing about them.
Still, not easy on anyone in such a senerio.
I am so glad though you found the strength to come join us for 2024.
We are thinking of your concerns and the thoughts you have for your friend. Keep yourself well in all of this.

M-T-W-TH-F-S ZERO alcohol
Can not find the cucumber Fever Tree sparkling.
I saw the same flavor in tonic, BUT YUCK! No way.
So I purchased the mango body armor drink.
Poured it in a chilled stemmed glass with a few mandarin oranges on a cocktail skewer. If I had only had some fresh mint to pick and placed a mint leaf on the skewer it would have been picture perfect.
