LESS Alcohol ~ January 2024 ~ One Day at A Time
Replies

As the end of my week one approached, I was thinking this was going to be a piece of cake.
Then, it occurred to me the next 7 days starts all over tomorrow!
We can do this if we are present in the moment each day and not worry about tomorrow,
Posting in advance for week #1:

Accountability: January 2024
M-T-W-TH-F-S ZERO alcohol
Can not find the cucumber Fever Tree sparkling.
I saw the same flavor in tonic, BUT YUCK! No way.
I don’t like tonic, either. I like seltzer with various bitters, but there’s a small amount of alcohol in it. Mostly, up here in the cold and (presently) snowy northeast USA, I’ve been drinking various teas. My late-night go-to is chamomile, sage, and ginger. So rich and satisfying!
So, as said, after many days of drinking in December, I’m perpetrating a dry January. So far, so good!
Best resolve to everyone, with great joy in the new year!

My goal for January is to have a “socially “ damp one! Shooting for 5 dry days out of 7.
So….
WEEK 1️⃣ was a win for me! Now onto week two.

I went to a brunch with a bunch of old college girlfriends. The wine, mimosas and Bloody Marys were flowing. I was tempted for a minute, but decided to stick with water. I didn't want to reset my NOMO clock again. I looked around and saw that quite a few of us were having water. I enjoyed the food and conversation and didn't have to worry about saying something stupid or worse, driving home impaired.7 -

Had one drink Friday night at a bday dinner and I could barely finish it. I just didn't feel like drinking so switched to diet coke. We were part of the northeast snow storm this weekend which is always the perfect excuse to stay in with a bottle of wine and lots of snacks but I didn't have one drop and surprisingly wasn't tempted either. I don't know how or why but I'm thrilled about it!5 -
Continuing with Damp January - went out of town this weekend to a place that usually results in lots of wine, poor sleep, and rough mornings. Not this time! While I didn't stay dry, I had my planned drinks and stayed within my limits - used a lot of tools that we've discussed in this group over the months including playing the tape forward to the next day and staying mindful versus just pouring another (something I truly struggle with on weekends!)
So far that makes 3 AF/4 A for January due to an overdone NYD. Plan for this week is dry through Friday, then staying within my limits Sat and Sun.5 -

I don’t like to criticize anyone in this difficult struggle, so you must do your thing.
My TDEE is ~2000kcals/day. When I want to cut, I shoot for 1500kcals/day. I have never lost weight while drinking daily— I’ve had to limit to once a week or less (usually I go dry for a while).
The problem is that I need the food! If I add the alcohol, I get too hungry both that day and the next. And it’s hard to maintain good habits when I drink.
I'm not really worrying about losing weight at this point. I could stand to lose 3-5 lbs but at 5'6" and 131# I'm ok. I'm here for the accountability and attempting to rein in my daily drinking. That's for the input.

AF YTD. The best thing I ever did for myself is change my behavior patterns. It took time. I used be the 5pm "run to the supermarket" shopper, in a state of hunger, thirst, stress, headache, aching back from sitting all day, and exhaustion. The perfect storm to pick up one more white wine along with dinner so it cure temporarily cure all my ailments. By 7pm, all these problems were gone so this worked (for a couple of hours) and I'd repeat.
Fast forward to 2024 and dinner is approaching. I choose not to go out since I've already shopped in advance and have ingredients for all my meals this week. I end my work day by taking a 5-10min hot bath. It helps me transition from work to home. I eat a bowl of something lo-cal while preparing dinner and if I am lazy, I'll eat a few pickles. I keep a bottle of water on my desk and drink it. I sometimes have a coffee or hot chocolate at 3 or 4pm. I take breaks so I am less mentally exhausted and I don't have any more pains since I stopped drinking (I think there is a relationship between alcohol causing me joint pain/inflammation). My husband drinks in front of me while we watch TV and I will choose to drink something non-alcoholic. I now sleep through the night, very well, and I wake up feeling relaxed.

Made it through Sunday football games without having a drink! Will be watching the college ballgame tonight. No plans for any alcohol. December was full of adult beverages - still waiting for the good sleep to come. I find that reducing after lots of days of alcohol makes it hard for me to get to sleep. It usually subsides in 1-2 weeks.

Happy Monday LA friends!
I bet those who have cut way back this month, along with me, are feeling so much better this week!
The daily happy hour (at home) cravings and bloating are subsiding now that holidays foods are all gone, however that sugar monster beckoned last night and I found gummie bears in a drawer 👿
I have been incorporating better sleep habits now (because it’s dark so early) which also equates to more energy in the daytime. There’s the trade off.
This week I want to lower my sodium and white carbs and focus on making healthier plant based meals (love trying new recipes with fresh vegetables and cooking a few times a week). Also want to begin walking on non-rainy days now that my cold is gone. It is going to be another AF day 😇
Let’s live our best LA life, just for today!5 -
@forestdweller1 hugs to you for the stress and worry over MIL. I really sympathize. I have 3 octogenarians local. One of them (the oldest!) is totally rational and prudent. The other two are dangerous to themselves and are offended by well meaning offers of help. I get the "You have nothing to worry about" (usually following something to worry about -- like a grease fire in the kitchen or a fall requiring surgery!). I'm also working on the estate of a friend who died suddenly last month. It was obvious something was wrong, but she didn't want anyone to know, and we didn't. It's sad. I'm sending you hugs and hopes for the best.
@xbowhunter Happy birthday! Hope the year ahead is a great one.

@Michieb125 Sobering report on DH, but you have such a great outlook, surely you will be an exceptional support to him.
Longtime LA friends, want to guess my accountability check-in? Same as too often the usual: AF until the weekend, then more A than planned Fri & Sat. DH had to fly out Sunday at 0-dark:30 for business, so I enjoyed a quiet day putting Christmas away. I had a glass of wine left over from the weekend, but stopped at 1. Room for improvement!
Last thought, what I came here to post:https://www.nytimes.com/wirecutter/reviews/best-non-alcoholic-drinks/
I respect that mocktails are triggering for some abstainers, but I find them delightfully creative and interesting. Cheers!5 -

@Annliz23 ~ Good Luck. I usually have the same issue but while not Dry January, my husband is doing a challenge that also restricts alcohol. I find that having a glass of something (non alcohol) helps a bit..
@sunnydays930 ~ Kudos to the brunch without booze.
@xbowhunter ~ Happy Birthday!!! Hope it was great!
@globalhiker ~ excellent behavior change!! Amazing what we CAN do!!
I am finding that a lot of reaching for the ...<fill in the blank>... is just habit! Once you start....

January 2024 accountability
8 days AF
I am sleeping very well. As long as I remember to turn the heat down at bedtime. Less puffy in eye area if it is cooler while I sleep.

@forestdweller1
I am sorry to hear your co-MIL has those health issues. She seems to not want others to worry about her health conditions from your post. It is a brave gesture for her to keep people from stressing about them.
Still, not easy on anyone in such a senerio.
I am so glad though you found the strength to come join us for 2024.
We are thinking of your concerns and the thoughts you have for your friend. Keep yourself well in all of this.
❤❤❤
Beautifully said, @MissMay, you said what I was trying to express. Hugs to you @forestdweller1.4 -

I went over my planned limits this past Friday and Saturday. My “damp” January got much more wet this weekend! AF again today. I did want a glass of wine after work, but it wasn’t a huge craving, and was satisfied by dinner and the Fever Tree Pink Grapefruit in a wine glass. Now I am SO ready for bed!
I love seeing all the new people here, and your stories and goals are so inspiring. Big hug to everyone who is struggling this week!5 -
My damp January journey is still going well (5/7 dry days a week). Today I stopped to pick up a pizza for dinner for us to eat while we watched the football game, and I easily passed up on a glass of wine while I was waiting for a half hour. That is huge!
