FEBRUARY 2024 Monthly Running Challenge
Replies

I joined a monthly challenge last year and then completely failed..... here for 2nd try.
2023 was an epically bad running year for me. I came into it with a horrible upper respitory infection that made running impossible and then I continued the downward spiral from there. I ran zero races and completed only 442 miles - the smallest amount of miles I've run since 2011.
2024 is my comeback year. I had a good January completing a daily mileage challenge and coming into February with good momentum. My February goal is to run a total of 85 miles.
2/3 - 3 miles
2/4 - 6 miles
2/6 - 2.6 miles

@Scott6255 Nice shoes! I hope the puma work out. I am also not so sure about my brooks ghosts but am in love with my Saucony’s.
@chris_in_cal Good luck! I hope everything goes well!
@quilteryoyo I’ll be thinking of you today. I hope the service goes well.
@polskagirl01 I enjoyed your pictures. You can definitely see the varying degrees of “success”. The main thing is that they taste good even if they may not look so perfect .3 -
Good morning everyone!
It was raining and stormy when I woke up, so I opted for a 10.4 km interval workout on the treadmill. It went really well. Does anyone have an idea why I can easily keep my splits on the treadmill but not outside? I know the last time I was trying to run the splits in 26km/h winds, but still, even when I had a tailwind I was having issues. I would rather have things the other way around .
48.5/200km for February.4 -
Morning everyone!
Got in 5 (at 09"35 pace).
@Scott6255 thank you for the encouragement! ... Sorry to hear the new Pumas aren't working out as intended. S-cks when you get a new pair but they just don't "agree" with you.
@TheMrWobbly - please do let me know when you're visiting SE16. Would absolutely love to do a run.... And guys/@shanaber - come onnnn! Don't know even know why/where this comes from... I'm not even the fastest here! 🤷🤷 I haven't 'done speed' in ages! (Neither am I training for any race, nor am I trying to impress any runner girls on my Strava with speed Lolz).
I would totally do an easy-to-converse social run.
@polskagirl01 I'm sure the kids loved the macarons. They didn't look that that bad. I'm sure they tasted great!
PS: I love *both* French macarons and coconut macaroons! 😋
@quilteryoyo - thinking of you today 🙏🏽10 -
Catching up…. Am out of town and have been very busy.
@eleanorhawkins great run!! Saw and commented on Strava.
@polskagirl01 speaking of Strava, are we connected? I’m on as daria0919. Are there other Strava people that I’ve missed friending? Please let me know, or friend me.
@chris_in_cal I do hope your surgery goes well.
@quilteryoyo thinking if you today. (Hug)
@Scott6255 I hope the shin splints are temporary and that it’s not the shoes. My husband complained of shin splints Saturday. I’ll have to remind him to look at his shoes.
@martaindale nice run yesterday!
@AlphaHowls love the post! Amusing!
Did those in California fair well from the heavy rains?
@kgirlhart nice run yesterday!
I got a mile lunch walk in yesterday. Strava quit working on me part way. I think my cell reception went out. I’m in Hilton Head, SC and the winds have been very strong. Will try to squeeze in another lunch walk today. Got my 10K trading info via email last night. Training officially starts Sunday with a 2-miler.

I have never signed up for Strava, there are impressionable runner girls there? I may have to give it a look. 🐶7 -
01.02 6.5km 51min 7:50/km - Goal pace repeats
02.02 6.4km 52min 8:08/km - slow
04.02 6.5km 51min 7:58/km - slow
07.02 6.0lkm 49min 8:04/km - 15 short intervals
25.41km/103km, 0.5km ahead
Was super constipated from using steroids. So much that I could hardly walk. So... helped it. Which was resolved right before running. Which obviously was a pretty stupid idea. The storm is gone, it's colder again, perfect running weather. But yeah, not a good run and now I have massive headaches. But anyway... planned for this week: 2x6km, 1x8km, 1x5km. Got one of the 6km runs in.6 -

@chris_in_cal Hahahaha
Sign up.
Activate "flyby" in your settings.
Go on a 5K fun run.
At the end of the race... Check how many people you ran it with. And then... kudos and follow away...
And if they follow you back...
You're welcome.
Best. Wingman. Ever.

Third day on the trot running hills, something I haven’t done in over a month. Great to be able to but my legs are complaining! Rest day tomorrow.
Macarons put fear in the heart of many a professional pastry chef, and they require a certain level of bravado to pull off. I make them fairly often for parties and think I’ve just about cracked it, but never attempt to bake them if I’m stressed. @polska_girl, I’d be pretty confident that using beet sugar will screw with the recipe - they can be very temperamental. Italian lemon almond cookies are a fab less sugary and much easier option to use your almond flour.
@scott6255 loving the shoes!
As for Strava, I now chat to all sorts of people I’ve met one or twice randomly at an event. I probably wouldn’t recognise them in real life, and half of them are way too fast for me to ever run with. Nice to find your ‘people’ though. Incidentally, if anyone wants to follow me, I’m Mary Searle Bell on there.6 -

@chris_in_cal Yikes!
One of my friends, divorced guy... He's on these apps a lot.
I think he's worked out to get any matches at all... You have to pay for premium membership. These swiping apps are like 80:20 male:female, and the algorithm puts the more popular/photogenic guys at the top of the pile. In order to 'force' your way up, you gotta pay... Otherwise, chances are, she'll never see you.
From what he's said - prefers Bumble, on Premium. Because the woman HAS to initiate first. So removes the creep factor.
Hinge is super slow and tedious... And a lot are only after something serious. 0 to IKEA and Good School districts kinda thing.
Lol.
Next guys night is on Fri 23... so will pick his brains!
But yeah... Strava *can* work. Has DM functionality too. If you live near each other; shared common interest of running... And let's put it this way - no one really looks great all hot sticky and sweaty... If you're liking each others runs and run pics... Why not? "Slide into the DMs" and see what happens! Lol.

2/7 - 3.61 miles - traveling for work this week to Salt Lake City so I have new running scenery as I explore a new city. Not really able to log food though - I am at a specialty food show and part of the job is to walk around and sample things so after a breakfast buffet of fresh fruit and a hard boiled egg, it has been random this and random that in bite sized portions. Being specialty food, it is for the most part on the healthier side (more so than it will be when I go to the Sweets & Snack show in May) but it is a full day of snacking with absolutely no way to actually track what it is. Trying to make sure I am only trying things that are true business needs/possibilities and keeping to just one bite even if the sample is larger than that. Ran before the feeding frenzy began so hopefully helped keep my day “even”. Vendor dinner tonight - planning to order soup and salad rather than a full meal - but sometimes my plans are foiled by other plans from the vendor hosting the dinner. Fingers crossed I will be able to order from the menu rather than limited options or a buffet.

Good morning everyone!
Today I went for a long run. My legs are feeling a bit fatigued from all the work I’ve been putting them through, but I still managed to do 17.3km. The weather here is back to freezing , but was otherwise dry this morning.
65.8/200km for February.9 -
Morning all!
Miserable. Wet and windy here in London.
People migrate from all four corners to come here... Can safely say - it ain't for the weather!
Drenched! Got in 4.6M (at 09"50).
Oh... And Salt Lake City... Lovely place for running.
@Leigh_b
If you've never been before... Really pretty place to go running. Depending on what route you take, can be a bit hilly in places - but so so scenic. Was one of my favourite runs in the US in 2021.Upto the State capitol and then around it...
(Downtown isn't hilly... Pretty flat where the big Mormon church and the arena where the Jazz play)
Oh, and if it's your thing... Guessing not, by your meal prep... Recommend Squatters. Great beer
@quilteryoyo - Hope you are okay, V. And that yesterday went well (as well as these things go) 🙏🏽9 -
After a few good days, today I woke up with some sort of intestinal virus. Complete with occasional weird flashy eye floaters and even more exhaustion than normal. Skipped donut day (Fat Thursday) completely. Managed to get some electrolytes down and that was it. I feel like it might be starting to subside, so maybe tomorrow will be better.
Note: I did give the kids money and sent them off on their bikes to buy their own donuts. It's a very important Polish cultural tradition to eat lots of "pączki" today, whether you are religious or not. The most common ones have a rose filling inside.10 -

In Pennsylvania the Amish had Fastnacht Day....big oily donuts. Sorry to hear you're struggling today @polskagirl01 get well soon.4 -
Oh no @polska_girl that sounds terrible, and even more terrible missing out on donuts - you’ll have to catch up tomorrow.
I had a friend from my running club ask the group who was running the Coatesville Half this Sunday. Now this is my local run and running this particular event five years ago was the catalyst for us moving to Coatesville. It’s a lovely scenic rural run, very hilly but on closed tarmac roads.
Thanks to the virus that knocked me out for most of January, I didn’t know if I was up to doing it this year. I thought I’d check it out and found out the entry fee was $90 for last-minute entry so thought I’m definitely not paying $90 for an event that includes 8km of my usual morning run. However, I carried on fossicking around on the event website to find that I was already entered (I must’ve entered months ago when I was feeling fitter and wealthier).
So guess who’s running a half marathon on Sunday slightly unfit and certainly not trained. It’s going to be an interesting day!10 -
Ran at the field house today even though it was a sunny, pleasant day today. I hadn't been there for a while. It seems that things are back to normal here now.
2/1 - Neighborhood. 2.91 miles. 39F, cloudy.
2/2 - Neighborhood. 1.26 miles. 34F, cloudy.
2/3 - Neighborhood. 1.33 miles. 36F, sunny.
2/4 - Neighborhood. 1.09 miles. 41F, sunny. Nice day.
2/8 - Field House. 3.09 miles.

2/8 ‐ 3.08 miles - another day of unavoidable random snacking topped off with a big vendor hosted dinner. Thankful I at least got to run a bit and explore the city even if it was rainy and cloudy the whole time. There will be 0 miles tomorrow since it is an early travel day (catching the train to the airport at 5 am) - but i will be very glad to get home and back to normal routine. 8 miles planned for Saturday.

Recovery miles before work this morning. Despite my rest day yesterday my legs were still feeling a little tired today.
I had a tempo workout planned for tomorrow but I got called in to work. That means I wouldn't be able to do it until after work and then do a 12 mile long run the following morning. I can already tell that's probably not going to happen. I'll try to at least get out for a walk or a short run but I struggle with running after work, especially when I have to drive across the city.5 -
That's a lot of rain @shanaber . I'm glad you didn't get any major damage.
Welcome @Leigh_b . You did great in Jan. This is a wonderful group to be a part of. I would have a really hard time at a specialty food show - or any kind of food show. LOL Sounds like you have a great plan to deal with it.
Thanks @Laurz9191 . I've never been able to pace myself outside, but I am a relative novice runnier here. I like the treadmill for intervals, because it makes me go at the pace I set. I can't answer your question though.
Thanks @tarun_yadavA and @daria0919 .
@ContraryMaryMary I'll look you up on Strava. I'm Vicky R from TN, I think. Good luck Sunday. It's funny that you forgot that you had signed up for it, but glad you did since it sounds like you really want to run it again. Have fun and don't stress over pace, which I am sure you were going to do without me saying so.
I hope you feel better tomorrow @polskagirl01 .
I hope your surgery went well yesterday @chris_in_cal .
I liked and hugged as appropriate but didn't comment on everyone's post. You are all doing great and are inspirational.

I helped with health screenings at a local HS this morning, ran a couple of errands, and then mom and I drove over to see Gary's (cousin) gravesite and flowers. We didn't get a chance to go back yesterday after the burial. It was after 4 and I was tired when I got home, so did a mile on the driveway and then Tippy and I strolled into the neighbor's field. It's supposed to rain the rest of the week, so the field will be too wet and she loves walking back there.
Yesterday was a really long, tiring day. I did manage a mile on the treadmill after taking mom to get her stitches out and before the funeral. Thank you all for the thoughts and prayers. I won't go into a lot of details here, but the hardest part was seeing Gary in the coffin. I had been telling my mom that he looked like my dad from certain angles, but she never saw it. Yesterday, he could have been dad's twin. Everyone who came in said, wow, I thought that was your dad at first. It just made it harder on all of us.
We're doing okay and it's now time to make sure all of the post life stuff gets done correctly. Continued thoughts and prayers are appreciated.11 -
@quilteryoyo thank you for the warm welcome. Very glad to be here among "my people". There is a little crazy in runners that only other runners can understand. I am so very sorry for your loss...prayers for you and your family as you navigate through.6

I ran 6 miles this morning. It was another really good run. It was 53°F feels like 51°. It has been great running weather all week. There is rain in the forecast for Saturday and Sunday, so I don't know if I will get a long run in this weekend or not. I am still planning to take tomorrow as a rest day though.
