This came across my Facebook feed, thought it was cute...6 -
Hello, back last week from sunny Mexico, where I logged my food every day (as best I could, lots of guessing lol)! And I was only up 3 lbs when I weighed in at home day after return, and now only a lb or so left to get back into losing territory.
Last 24 hours of vacation were a doozy though as high winds hit Holbox island and the ocean washed over and filled all the roads and flooded many buildings. Power and water went out. We had to wade over an hour through the streets to get back to the ferry, and were so happy to make our bus back to the Cancun airport in time for our flight home!
All the extra activity was helpful for weight management though 😊.
This is my year to make some headway, in 2021/22 when I started MFP, I lost almost 50 lbs, then spent 2023 s l o w l y losing ground & regaining some, but I'm still down 30 lbs from the start.
Problem is, still need to lose another 100 - I am a longtime yoyo dieter which of course was never the plan. This time around I am in it FOR LIFE and am pursuing health and a healthy weight as lazily as possible 😉. Love being retired so I can give it my focus.
I am in another group that is doing a homemade soup challenge - which was perfect for my return from vacation. First I made a potato/kale/sausage soup, which was very filling and 124 calories per cup.
And today I finished making Minestrone, using 10 different vegetables plus a can of 5 bean medley & pasta shells. This was only 82 calories per cup 😋
Tomorrow I am planning on making a Carrot/ginger/Cauliflower puree type soup. I am on a roll! And I have a freezer lol 🙂
Welcome newbies and not so newbies! Sometimes this thread goes quiet but please don't let that deter you from posting. We are still around!6 -
@BCLadybug888 Your soups look delicious! I absolutely love making and enjoying many varieties of soup, but I have to be so careful with salt, which makes it so tasty but bad for me. Trying to change my salt addiction is so hard! I'm going on a long group vacation in April, and my travel mates keep raving about all the food that comes with it. Hoping to build up my will power before i go. I think the fear of not maintaining my new "thinner" self's clothes might help, hahahaha.
Your comment "Welcome newbies and not so newbies! Sometimes this thread goes quiet but please don't let that deter you from posting. We are still around!" is right on, I look here every time I open MFP. I enjoy reading the thoughts, experiences of current friends in the group, and welcoming newbies here, all of us with a common quest.4 -
Hello I am 61 and starting using fitness pal again. It does help planning what to eat each day and see where the calories are coming from. I half started walking daily again to get in shape. Nice to see what others are doing here as well. Thanks for having me.8

It's lonely here! Anyone home?0
-
I'm home/here! Is there anything you want to talk about? I'm doing well with logging my food but not doing well with weight loss, what's up with that?1
-
@KerryITD I guess it depends what you're logging! I've gone through periods where I was diligent about logging but still gained weight. CICO (calories in calories out) is science. We just have to expend more calories than we take in and we will lose weight. But unfortunately the act of logging isn't science, because we are human. Sometimes we over estimate our portions. Sometimes we under estimate. Sometimes we choose the wrong entry, (usually the one that is most beneficial to our tally 🙁). But if you are confident that you are logging your food correctly, then maybe you just need to consume less calories in order to see a loss? Or throw in an extra walk or some other type of exercise?
@SbetaK I'm here, but yeh, it has been quiet lately! We just finished a big 4-day winter sporting event in town so lots of volunteer hours the last couple of weeks. My husband's volunteer role with the event required him to start right after Christmas. It was fun, and very rewarding, but it's kind of nice to get back into a regular routine this week and just catch our breath.
The best news is that after the strangest of all winters, there is finally enough snow to go skiing at my local x-country ski facility. Usually by now I've been out 20-30 times but due to the lack of snow, today will be my first time this season. I've been going to the gym instead, but it's a very poor substitution for being outside, with my border collie and golden retriever running beside me 🙂

@ridiculous59 , I hear you about CICO. I've never been completely certain of what my calorie goal should be...I'm 64, have always had insulin resistance (even when at a healthier weight) with PCOS and other hormonal imbalances that make me think I just need to eat less than what MFP says. That said, I'm also 5'8" and not wispy lol so net 1200 cals has never been sustainable for me. I do have a new rescue 6 month old pup though, so I'm walking a ton more. Yay for dogs!3

Hi @KerryITD! I check in here every day, it's just been so quiet I wondered how everyone was doing! I'm consistently logging my food too, and especially keeping my worst habit of too much salt in check. I've been hovering around the same weight for about 3 weeks, despite following my macros/goals, and I am just now finally seeing the scale drop. Guess I had to stabilize for awhile. I'm an active person, and as I lose weight I feel more energetic, have a lighter "step" when i walk, I guess I could describe it as feeling more "youthful" than when I was heavier. I felt like a slug then, hahahaha. Thanks for coming back to me, I hope others on here are doing well, feeling well, need a hug, and chime in on their thoughts!

Hi, y'all! I'm still here, too.
Just cranking along, still in maintenance. That said, I was up a little post holidays, so working on pulling in the reins a bit to super-slowly drift back down.
It got silly-warm here on Tuesday (for February), over 70F (21C), breaking the previous record for high that date (64F (18C) in 1867). It was primary election day here in Michigan, so I rode my bike to my polling place, first outdoor bike ride so far this year. After voting, I explored a new trail extension to the Southeast, for a total ride of around 16 miles. Nice to be out riding in the sunshine and fresh air!
Can't remember whether I've mentioned it here, but I've been going through some weird medical symptoms with no obvious cause, worrisome given my medical history but not interfering with daily life yet except for a little fatigue. But I've been busy getting nearly every possible medical test: Blood tests, chest/abdominal X-ray then CT of those, full spinal X-rays pelvic ultrasound, endometrial biopsy . . . .
So far, lots of signs that I've been ramming around in this body for 68 years (not always treating the body right, either!), but no explanation of the current symptoms. Waiting on an upper GI scope to be scheduled as the next step. This diagnostic process is not a particularly entertaining hobby!
On the brighter side, there are flowering things indoors and out (in a spoiler for length):Zygopetalum Redvale:
Armies of Crocus tommasinianus:
Iris reticulata 'George':
Helleborus hybrid (probably mostly H. niger) just staring to open:9 -
Hi @AnnPT77 Sure hope you find a source that is minor for your health issues. Gets scary when we get older. I'm jealous of your weather! It warmed up into the 40's (F) where I live, all the snow and ice disappeared except for on the mountain tops. Then a couple days ago, a big windstorm hit us, 50-60 knot winds, and now its in the teens, colder with the wind chill. And my water pipes have frozen. And just to trick us, the skies are clear and the sun is shining. At least my kitties have a nice sunny spot to laze about in with the sun rays streaming through the windows. Love your flower pics. There is one stubborn little violet in a pot on my deck, that has bloomed all winter! Hope you feel more up to par soon!

I should've mentioned: It went right back to 20s to 30s F (-7 to -1 C) yesterday and today! That's a more normal February here. We had a thunderstorm on Tuesday night, complete with hail at my place, and I've heard there was a small tornado not far away. Wednesday, we had snow showers. Anything can happen . . . !
Thank you for the well-wishes, @SbetaK. I don't like this not-knowing thing, but presumably there will be answers sooner or later.5 -
@AnnPT77 I second that wish for you to find out what's going on. Sometimes the not knowing is worse than the actual diagnosis.1

There's FINALLY enough snow to set classic tracks at my local x-country ski facility. In a normal winter we'd have had three months of skiing under our belts by now. I took the dogs out on Thursday and it was amazing. They were so happy and my face was sore by the end of my ski.....from smiling so much 🙂
Yesterday there was a cold wind so my walking friends and I took our hour-long walk inside, instead of our usual route on the paved trails beside the river. When it's icy or too windy we'll often use the walking track at the arena. The mezzanine floor is covered in nice rubber matting so it's quite comfortable and is well used by seniors. Many who intersperse their laps by walking up and down the stairs in the seating area. But yesterday we went to the indoor soccer facility instead. I've never walked the track there before and it felt kind of weird. The floor, with its fake grass, is cushioned and it felt so nice and springy. Definitely a good walking option for someone with knee or hip problems. Both facilities (the arena and the soccer facility) are free to use. How great is that? 🙂5 -
My dogs enjoying their long awaited first ski of the season...

Please add me to the list/group. I need to loose 30 pounds also. I am good at the walking. My eating my goal of at least 5-7 greens and/or vegetables per day sucks and my weight training is non-existent.3

Hey hey, you didn't extinguish us yet! 😘There is one stubborn little violet in a pot on my deck, that has bloomed all winter!
Weird weather here too - lovely and warming, then blast of icy cold for a day or 2 - my plants don't know what to make of it!
I was in Mexico for 10 days or so early in Feb, travelling around with friends that live back east, so that was lots of fun.
My weight was up a couple of pounds on return, and was slowly disappearing when the bursitis in my hip flared up again (not nearly as painful as first flare up last Summer) and that seemed to stall me out, and weight drifted up a bit.
Now I'm on the mend again but having trouble maintaining a deficit plus activity dwindled to almost nothing. Ah well, I do know what to do, and certainly not giving up! Just need to implement lol.
Good to hear from you, anyone else want to chime in??
Sending you my best wishes Ann for some concrete answers.4 -
Thanks for the good wishes, all. I appreciate it!
FWIW: In case anyone is interested, and is in the US, the current AARP magazine has some suggested fitness self-assessments for aerobic fitness, flexibility, muscular strength, and balance, with some target values (averages or similar, by age group and sex) plus suggested ways to improve.
I wouldn't get too hung up on the "grades", but the individual tests could be a way to self-assess/appreciate one's progress on things we're working to improve. (It's a multi-page piece; I'm not going to lay out all their IP here.)
This would be the February/March 2024 issue, which has a dual cover (on front/back). One cover has a photo of Robert DeNiro, and the other has a photo of some (former) pro athletes in their 50s. There's also some other fitness info and some recommended warm-ups for pickleball.3 -
I'm 62 and getting older is not for the weak, lol. Feel free to add me, the more the merrier as far as getting healthier!3

Hello and welcome to @noirparis and @Neon_B, @riderkh5801 and any other new folks (with apologies) whose first message here I missed. Stick around, post, chip away at your goals - all good stuff. :flowerforyou:2

Hello Again, I originally signed up last year but didn't post anything after that. since then I have lost 78 lbs, not in a wheelchair anymore, still on Oxygen for COPD (keeps me kickin'), I use a 4 wheeled walker on long walks but not around the house. I took up Macramé' in October 2023 and am getting pretty good, or so I've been told. It's fun. I have a timer on my computer that get's me up for a walk every hour and to drink water every 2 hours. The Dr has me on a 1500 ml water restriction and I am also taking a Super-Duper diuretic twice a day which has me getting up and going to the restroom pretty frequently too. Anyhow, I'll start making weekly updates to keep you informed. I am a 66 yr old single dude who lives in the Midwest.4

@ksquacker, that sounds like amazing progress: Congratulations! Keep up the good work, and I'll look forward to seeing your weekly updates.0 -

Hello fellow rollator user!
I only use mine when I have a lot of walking to do, like when I’m at the VA with my husband. Otherwise I use two canes.
I use a NuStep daily for my exercise. We replaced one of the living room couches to fit it in. 10/10 definitely recommend!

Anyone else in this group dealing with a spouse who has dementia?
My spouse is (relatively) fine.
Kind of had it with his friends who always want to know how he’s doing, but don’t visit, or offer to meet for lunch.
It’s been a decade. He’s not gonna get better. Either visit him or stop asking.

Well done!! My goodness, that is great! Weren't you bedridden originally from your back? What an inspiration, please do keep us posted. 😊I took up Macramé' in October 2023 and am getting pretty good, or so I've been told. It's fun.
I used to do macrame, forgot all about it - plant hangers, wall hangings, small hanging tables...sold some, bartered some...probably still have some supplies kicking around from the 70s 😆I have a timer on my computer that get's me up for a walk every hour and to drink water every 2 hours.
Great strategy - I was doing this kind of a reminder for steps on my Fitbit, but like the idea of tacking on a water reminder.
Cheers!1 -

Yes, I feel your pain. My spouse has had dementia for four years, and for me it's a rough go dealing with family members who get upset or offended when he doesn't remember or understand what they've just told him.2
